Are you empowering others or unleashing agency? In this episode, Judith Katz and Fred Miller join Kevin to discuss the role of agency in the workplace. While autonomy and authority are often topics of discussion, agency — the ability for all individuals, regardless of their role or tenure, to possess power, influence, and a voice — is crucial for high-performance organizations. They explain how organizational cultures often "smother" this natural agency through excessive rules, approvals, and "checkers checking checkers," which leads to the slow implementation of even the best strategies. Judith and Fred highlight that organizations need to transition from control-based leadership to trust-based leadership. In August of 1969, Dorothy Miller, the only female real estate agent in the city of Burlington, Iowa, received a call from a man named Robert Clark, asking to see the for sale property at 118 Grand Street. Dorothy agreed to show it to the man that evening, but made sure her husband, Fred Miller, came along for safety purposes. The next day, the man called Dorothy and asked to see the property again, and this time, Dorothy went with the man alone. She was found dead at the property the next day, with multiple stab wounds to her head and back and she had been sexually assaulted. 42 years later, in West Des Moines, Iowa, a 27-year-old real estate agent by the name of Ashley Okland was set to attend an open house at a new model home property in an upscale part of town. Ashley, who had not an enemy in the world, was targeted in broad daylight, by a gunman who came through the front door of the town home and shot her twice, killing her. Both cases remain unsolved to this day. Extreme Genes - America's Family History and Genealogy Radio Show & Podcast
Host Scott Fisher opens the show with David Allen Lambert, Chief Genealogist of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and AmericanAncestors.org. The guys begin with swapping stories from their explorations of the past week. Fisher made a great find in an unusual way, and David ran into a cousin at a lecture whose head he caused to explode (not quite literally… but close!) with what he had to tell her. In Family Histoire News, David notes the appearance of Fred Miller on 60 Minutes recently, who bought a house, only to learn it had once been owned by the man who had been the slaveholder of Fred's ancestors. Then, an organization in New York is finding grave stones of Jewish service members whose graves are marked with Christian markers and is replacing them with Star of David markers at no charge to the family. (This sometimes occurred when the cemeteries only had Christian markers in supply.) Fisher then visits with Jenny Ashcraft of sponsor Newspapers.com. Jenny and Fisher both talk about stories they have found in newspapers, and share a few tips for finding more. Next, Karen Batchelor joins the show. A long time “friend of the program,” Karen shares a story from her enslaved ancestry which has been memorialized by her artist brother-in-law, Ron Fortier, in a series of amazing paintings. Hear Ron explain the emotional impact the story has had on him which inspired his efforts. Then, David returns for Ask Us Anything, answering your questions. That's all this week on Extreme Genes, America's Family History Show!

Fred Miller has been CEO of Kaleel Jamison Consulting Group since 1985 and with the organization since 1979. His passion and intentions are bold and clear! This is part 1 of a 4 part interview.
“People are more skeptical now than ever about all things–authority, people, and organizations. And so the real challenge is, what are you showing to your people to let them know that they can trust you?” asks Frederick Miller, CEO and lead strategist of The Kaleel Jamison Consulting Group. Today, he and Judith Katz, fellow strategist and thought leader, combine their expertise to talk about how to create inclusive, collaborative workplaces. Authenticity is a core value for both Fred and Judith and they try to incorporate it into all of their interactions with their clients. Fred shares that growing up as a young African American man in Philadelphia made a big influence on how he viewed the world. While Judith shares that her experiences growing up as the child of Holocaust survivors greatly shaped how she conceptualized justice and change. Ultimately, they found one another and have been collaborating ever since to bring an authentic human experience to their clients. The true goal for leadership needs to be to create a work environment that feels not only diverse, but also inclusive. People are no longer content to work for organizations where they do not feel their values align. It is more important than ever for the success of a business that leaders really demonstrate how much they value their employees. Authenticity comes from being true to yourself and being willing to share your unique voice with others. When leaders embrace authenticity and connect with their employees and clients, that is when the magic happens. Diversity is a fact of life, but inclusivity is something that leaders must purposefully create within their organizations. True inclusivity and authenticity will enable greater collaboration and greater levels of problem solving. Quotes: “One of the things that Fred and I brought to the client was they felt like we cared about them, as individuals, as a system, and as an organization. And to me, that's been an important part of authenticity.” (10:54-11:04 | Judith) “I was fortunate enough to go to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, an HBCU, and I saw many, many Black males at the time. I was like, ‘Wow, there's a range. We're smart. We're capable. The world's trying to keep us down, but we have a lot to give to the world.' And it really helped me get more confidence.” (13:12-13:33 | Fred) “How do we create high performing organizations where people feel valued and supported? That's leadership, right? That's what leaders need to do.” (27:35-27:47 | Judith) “People are more skeptical now than ever about all things authority, people, and organizations. And so the real challenge is, what are you showing to your people to let them know that they can trust you?” (29:18-29:29 | Fred) “Diversity has to be there. There's no ifs, ands, or buts about that. What we need to do is make sure we bring the inclusion part. And that it becomes an organizational norm, management competency, and a way that people interact and solve problems inside the organization.” (30:35-30:51 | Fred) Links: Mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Mike Horne on Linkedin Email Mike at mike@mike-horne.com Find more about Leading People and Culture with Authenticity Learn more about Frederick A. Bill Whitaker takes a hard look at the U.S. electric grid – the largest machine in the history of the world, a hodgepodge of public and privately-owned companies cobbled together over generations – so essential to daily life that we literally couldn't live without it. 60 MINUTES' investigation into the threats facing the grid, from cyber-attacks to sabotage and physical assaults, are eye-opening and not reassuring. What's more, no U.S. government agency, not even the Department of Energy, is truly in charge of protecting it. Graham Messick is the producer.Lesley Stahl visits Fred Miller and his family in the large house in southern Virginia that they recently bought to host family gatherings, only to discover that their own ancestors had once been enslaved on that very property. Miller's sister and cousins scoured historical records and enlisted a genealogist to find evidence that their great-great-grandparents, Violet and David Miller, were enslaved on the plantation, then-called Sharswood. The dilapidated building still standing behind the main house has been identified by archeologists as living quarters for some of the enslaved men and women there. Buying this home has opened a window into the Miller family's past that was not discussed within their family, and that many African American families struggle to obtain. Speaking in front of others is one of the top fears almost all humans have, and I know because I used to take F's in speech class. Our guest today shares this. “It really is real, it's most people's greatest fear. And the short answer and people have it because it's not natural. You know, if you think about it, most of our conversations are one on one, they're on the phone, you don't see the person. A lot of people these days, especially younger ones, they're just texting or emailing, you don't see or hear them. They get in front of an audience like, wow, this is really, different.” We are joined by a special guest, Fred Miller. Fred is a speaker, a best-selling author, and an international presentation coach. His books, “NO SWEAT Public Speaking!” and “NO SWEAT Elevator Speech!” are purchased internationally, and have rave reviews on Amazon.com Fred teaches we're much too tough on ourselves. One thing I always ask the audience, Mike, I ask,” Is anybody sitting out there thinking, man, I can't wait till Fred screws up? I'll be on his Facebook page, his LinkedIn page.” Most of them are glad that you're up there, and they're not. This fear of public speaking. And you have obviously also, it's an equal opportunity fear. It doesn't care about your age, education, or occupation. Fred explains why stories are the emotional glue that connects your audience to your message and what you must do to find and build your stories. Also, in this episode with Fred Miller, you will learn how to put together a presentation full of imagery and ideas that pop and keep the attention of your audience, whether a team meeting or a keynote speech in front of thousands. I was so excited to talk to Lacy Camp and her daughter Darby Camp about their acting careers! This mother daughter duo are teaming with talent. So much so, they are both starring in the new UPTV movie "When We Last Spoke." Darby plays a younger version of the character her mom plays named Juliet. "When We Last Spoke" airs April 4 on UPTV. "When We Last Spoke" is set in 1967. Two rambunctious sisters are abandoned and raised by doting grandparents and one wacky great-grandmother in the fictional southern town of Fireside. Humor, heartbreak and triumph are served with whipped cream and lots of local nuts in this heartwarming tale of family, friendship and forgiveness. Lacy has been on a ton of projects like "Vice Principals," "Outcast" and "Red Band Society." She tells me her daughter showed a natural talent for acting at a young age. And at 13, she's got a resume most adults would dream of. She starred as Reese Witherspoon's daughter in "Big Little Lies" when she was just 9. And you'll recognize her from "The Christmas Chronicles" movies and the upcoming "Clifford the Big Red Dog" movie where she plays Emily Elizabeth. I loved hearing how supportive Lacy is of Darby's career and how well they work together. Lacy and Darby Camp It was also interesting to hear the perspective of working actors that doesn't live in NYC or Los Angeles. The Camps live in North Carolina where they enjoy a quiet, non-Hollywood life (and I imagine it's also much cheaper!) We talked about how they navigate auditions, and working on set. It was very inspiring to hear that it is possible to be successful in this business without living in the two most expensive cities. Take a minute to listen to their story and don't forget to watch them in "When We Last Spoke" April 4th on UPTV! "When We Last Spoke" was filmed on location in Toccoa, Georgia. The movie was adapted from the book written by Executive Producer, Marci Henna. It was directed by Joanne Hock ("The Ultimate Legacy," "Purple Dreams") and produced by Rick Eldridge ("The Ultimate Gift," "Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius") and Fred Miller ("For All Mankind," "Angles Sing"). The film stars Corbin Bernsen ("Major League," "L.A. Law"), Melissa Gilbert ("Little House on the Prairie"), Chandler Head ("The Glass Castle," "Fosse/Verdon"), Darby Camp, ("Big Little Lies," "The Christmas Chronicles") and Academy Award winner, Cloris Leachman ("The Last Picture Show," "Young Frankenstein").

Effective Presentation Tips with Fred Millerhttps://nosweatpublicspeaking.com/Many meetings, conferences, and seminars are now on-line. These virtual gatherings are very different from in-person, live events. Attending can be challenging. While presenting can be extremely challenging, it can lead to new OPPORTUNITIES!Focus on your Audience's NeedsYour presentation needs to be built around what your audience is going to get out of the presentation. As you prepare the presentation, you always need to bear in mind what the audience needs and wants to know, not what you can tell them. While you're giving the presentation, you also need to remain focused on your audience's response, and react to that. You need to make it easy for your audience to understand and respond.

SCRIPTURE: Luke 19:42; 2 Cor. 5:18-19; Matthew 5:9; Luke 6:27-28; Colossians 3:10 Our calling, as Christians, isn’t just to recognize God’s ability to bring wholeness (Week 1), or to surrender ourselves to the gift of wholeness God wants to bring to us (Week 2); it’s also to be agents of wholeness in our relationships with others. Many of us are surrounded by broken relationships: in our relationships with our friends and family, and also in their relationships with one another. This week, we want to explore the roles God gives us to play as “peacemakers” working for reconciliation in our world. The kind of “shalom” God embodies is present in us, too, when our relationships are characterized by love and heart-felt acceptance.DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:How do you feel when a relationship is alienated? SCRIPTURE: Acts 3-5 (Acts 3:17-26)In the wake of Peter’s sermon at Pentecost, we see a cycle of events develop that will dominate the church’s story in the weeks and months ahead. Over and over again, the disciples--now filled with the Holy Spirit--perform miracles of healing, forgiveness, and generosity among the Jewish people, each followed by a proclamation of Jesus’s story and a call to repent and be baptized. And then, over and over again, the Jewish authorities have the disciples questioned (and sometimes arrested) for creating such a disruption. In the face of this, the disciples hold fast to their testimony about Jesus’s resurrection, and they even praise God for the privilege of suffering for Jesus’s sake. Underneath it all, we see real evidence accumulating behind Peter’s claim at Pentecost: the Christian church is a new Temple, filled with the Holy Spirit and called to take the overwhelming love of God’s presence out, among the nations. Our own church is a descendent of that movement, and the faithfulness, boldness, and confidence of the first apostles is available to us as well. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:Before Peter and John heal the beggar in Acts 3, the text says that they “looked straight at him.” How might we be challenged by this detail? What do you think they see? When the disciples are before the Sanhedrin, they say that they “cannot help speaking about what they have seen and heard.” Have you ever felt similarly driven to share something exciting in your own life? What was it? Have you ever felt this way about your faith? If so, what happened when you shared it?Reread the story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5. What do you make of this story? Why are Ananias and Sapphira punished? What lessons do you think we can draw from this story? What in this story is hard for you to hear or accept? Peter and the other disciples go to great lengths to insist to the Jewish authorities that their mission is a fulfilment of Scripture and not a heresy or deviation from it. Why do you think this is so important to them? What are some of the core values and practices we see in the early church in Acts 3-5? How might we strive to imitate them in our own church community? What is the model we see here for what a healthy church might look like?

Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you’re better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.” - Jerry Seinfeld "What we fear in public speaking is not the act per-se, but the rejection that could come from it." “There are two types of speakers: those that are nervous and those that are liars.” - Mark Twain “A good speech should be like a woman's skirt; long enough to cover the subject and short enough to create interest.” - Winston Churchill "In order to be convincing, you need to be convinced." "Your speeches will impact your reputation, your branding, and ultimately, your business." "Always keep this in mind: There will always be someone more knowledgeable than you in the audience. And some of them can call you out on inaccurate information… sometimes even publicly." “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and dog gone it, people like me.” - Stuart Smalley "You cannot make it interesting if you are not interested." “A story is remembered long after the sermon is forgotten.” - Charles Spurgeon "Preparation eliminates agitation." "You don’t want to be shaking when you go on stage… you want to shake them. Figuratively speaking." "The reason we have performance anxiety when speaking is that we focus more on our performance than our audience." "You are to act as a servant, a waiter, serving your audience. And your message is the dish you are serving." "Our biggest problem when speaking – mine and yours, is that we seek the praise of men rather than the glory of God." "When we are called upon to speak in public, we are there to add value to others, but we anguish over how our own value may be affected in the process." "Ultimately, our fear of public speaking is because we have “I” troubles. And ‘I’ trouble means our vision needs to be corrected." "Humility is your best friend as a public speaker." “The worse speech you’ll ever give, will be far better than the one you never give.” - Fred Miller "There are always three speeches, for every one you actually gave. The one you practiced, the one you gave, and the one you wish you gave." - Dale Carnegie Recommended... Support this podcast

Ok, you're two months in with "Accountability Thursday". Your hands should be fully awake by now, right? In the past four mini-episodes we've mixed things up a good bit with short solos, long solos and memorized solos. This time we're going back into the NARD book once again for something with a different feel and twist. We'll work on the Fred Miller solo, "Two Four Hooker". It's a short, catchy solo but has a few elements that we've not encountered before. We'll work toward a very deliberate, medium 'strut' tempo where we'll accentuate the difference between the dotted eighth, sixteenth rhythms and the eighth note triplets written next to them. Take special care not to round out the dotted eighth, sixteenths! We want a duple, strict interpretation of that rhythm so that it has a nice contrast against the rolling, rounded out triplets. Don't be afraid to splay out the triplets and let them roll off your sticks. Another thing that will make a nice differentiation is interpreting all the eighth note rolls as seven stroke ternary rolls. You'll notice that every time they are played they lead into a duple rhythm which makes for nice contrast. Also, the medium tempo allows for an articulate, open sound even for the quick ternary seven stroke motion. Finally since there are no dynamic markings interpret the entire solo at the forte level. Written accents will be played at the double forte level. Don't forget to check out the sheet music and performance of "Two Four Hooker". Click on this link to view. The Private Advice of Harry Connick, Jr. Chandler Canterbury is a child actor with a dazzling future. Immediately following the world premiere of When Angels Sing, a not-yet-released movie young Canterbury made with Willie Nelson, Connie Britton, Lyle Lovett, Fionnula Flanagan, Kris Kristofferson and Harry Connick, Jr., Harry grabbed a microphone and told a funny story about his first encounter with Chandler. (I've posted my iPhone video of that moment in http://mondaymemo.wpengine.com/rabbithole (the rabbit hole) for you.) But Harry C. Jr. told an even better story privately. “Chandler and I were hanging out between scenes,” Harry said, “when he looked at me and said, ‘What's the secret of being popular? How do you get people to like you?'” An interesting question, don't you think? Most of us would have responded by saying “Just be yourself,” or “Popularity is overrated,” or some other such claptrap. But Harry believes in answering questions as asked. So the astoundingly popular actor and musician looked young Chandler in the eyes and said, “The secret of being liked is to always ask 5 questions before you say anything about yourself. People won't remember what you said about yourself, but they'll always remember what you asked about them.” Harry then let Chandler practice asking him different kinds of ice-breaking questions until the young man finally mastered the art. It kind of makes you wish Harry Connick, Jr. had taken you under his wing when you were a kid, doesn't it? The bigger story, though, is the movie itself. Turk Pipkin wrote When Angels Sing as a story to be read to his friends and family each Christmas. Year after year, Turk would pull those sheaves of dog-eared paper out of a shoebox and read the story to a roomful of friends who would faithfully gather to hear it. And each Christmas, the crowd got bigger. One year, Fred Miller was in the room. Among his other accomplishments, Fred was executive producer of For All Mankind, that miraculous film documenting the Apollo space missions from 1968 to 1972. When released in 1989, For All Mankind was selected as the Audience Favorite and the Grand Jury Winner at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award. That same Fred Miller jumped up and said, “This story needs to be made into a movie.” Then Elizabeth Avellan – producer of 30 movies including the Spy Kids franchise – got on board. Following Elizabeth was Shannon McIntosh, executive in charge of post-production for Quentin Tarantino's Oscar-winning Inglourious Basterds (2009) and executive producer of this year's Oscar-winning Django Unchained (2012.) And now you want to invite Fred Miller to your Christmas party, right? When Willie and Harry and Connie and Lyle and Fionnula and Kris heard about the project and read the screenplay, each of them volunteered to make the film for a teeny-tiny fraction of the prices they typically command. Each of them knew in their heart this film was a magical Christmas card that would cause tens of millions of people to have happier holidays for decades to come. And each of them wanted to be part of a movie that said, “Merry Christmas. You are loved.” Hollywood desperately wants to gain control of this film but the actors and producers aren't sure they want Hollywood to have it. During a laughter-filled afternoon on the campus of Wizard Academy a few days ago, the general feeling of the producers was to possibly try and repay the $17,000,000 it cost to make this movie by crowdfunding through Kickstarter. I'm not sure whether the Kickstarter thing will happen, but I can definitely tell you that everyone who was involved in the making of When Angels Sing looks at this not-yet-released movie the same way old hippies look at Woodstock, “I was there. I was part of...
