Welcome to one of my favorite episodes of the year: My Private Practice Predictions for 2024! And specifically, I'm talking about how to thrive in a changing economic landscape.I'm going to make 3 BIG predictions that you're going to want to know if you're thinking about starting your private practice this year. I'll give you a hint of one of them: The Importance of Diversification of Income. I tell my students in the Start and Grow Your Private Practice programs all the time about how business isn't something that you learn once. Just like you're a lifelong learner for clinical education, it's important to invest in being a lifelong learner for your business education. One of the reasons is that this landscape of practice changes every few years, and you need to be prepared and know how to navigate the ups and downs, the feast and famine cycles, and different positive and negative trends when it comes to things like finances, marketing, hiring, and more. So I know what I'm talking about. And no matter where you are in the private practice journey, I know that the information that I'm about to share can really help you.In Today's Episode, We Discuss:How we are planning to support even more students in our programs this yearThe shift toward lifestyle private practicesPositioning your private practice in a changing economyWhy diversification of income is crucialThose are my private practice predictions for 2024! I hope you're feeling as energized and excited about the future of private practice as I am. My word for 2024 is 'Evolve' – because it's all about evolving with the times, simplifying complexities, and thriving in our practices. Beginners, Private Practice Bootcamp starts on January 22nd! Jena Castro-Casbon of The Independent Clinician joins us for a conversation about being a queer professional in private practice.
Having a part-time private practice is the safest and smartest way to get started. I actually don't recommend that SLPs or OTs jump full-time into running their own private practice to start. People are so surprised to hear me say that but the truth is, when just starting out, I recommend that you start part-time on the side of your regular job for a few different reasons. The first is that it decreases your financial risk when you leave your job and allows you to have those benefits while growing your business. This works wonders for calming those nerves about embarking on your private practice journey. The second is that it helps you test the waters and make sure that going all-in on private practice is right for you. The last thing you want or need is to dive into being a private practice owner only to find it's not right for you. The third reason is that you can start generating income on the side that you can use to pay off debt, build up your savings, reinvest in your business, or use on fun things before it becomes your sole income. Your private practice starts with one client. This time is perfect for getting all of your ducks in a row so that when you go full-time with your business, you are fully prepared for the work that comes with it. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Why SLPs and OTs are starting their private practices on the side now more than ever The benefits of starting parent coaching Why now is the perfect time to start The things people think you need to get started and why you don't actually need them Why it doesn't cost as much to start as you think The things you do need to get started with your private practice Starting your private practice is simpler than you think. You don't need to go all out right from the start. Babysteps are the way to go. Starting as a side hustle will help you create the business of your dreams in the easiest way possible. Many new SLPs hold back from starting their own private practice because they don't believe they have enough experience to venture off on their own, but that isn't true! You can start your private practice as soon as you have something to bring to the table. Specializing is a great way to increase your referrals and find success sooner, even if you are a new SLP. In this episode, I sat down with Sydney Bassard to talk about how she started her own private practice that focuses on deaf and hard-of-hearing children and literacy early on in her career and how she created multiple streams of income to increase her success. Sydney knows that she can run her private practice in whatever way works for her. She is a multi-passionate person and is using her private practice as a way to focus on more than just one of them. Sydney Bassard is a private practice SLP in Charlotte, NC. She graduated with her B.S. in Public Health in 2017 and her MSP in Speech Pathology in 2019. Sydney received both her degrees from The University of South Carolina. Prior to opening her own private practice, Sydney worked in outpatient pediatrics as a member of the cochlear implant team. Her private practice, The Listening SLP, LLC, is founded on the principles to "Listen.Learn.Advocate" with the clients and families she serves. She is enjoys sharing strategies for incorporating language and literacy throughout daily routines via @thelisteningslp on Instagram and Facebook. Outside of being an SLP, Sydney enjoys digital content creation, hiking, enjoying time with friends and families, and spoiling her dog, Kinsley. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: How Sydney decided it was time to start her private practice The benefits of specializing Why you don't need decades of experience to start your private practice The importance of continuing education when you have a private practice The benefits of creating multiple streams of income Branching out with teletherapy Life is short, so we need to be doing things that we love to do, that we are fulfilled by, and that are providing a service. Starting a private practice is a great way to create the career of your dreams, just like Sydney did. If you are interested in hearing more from Sydney, I highly recommend you follow her onhttps://www.instagram.com/thelisteningslp/ ( Instagram) for inspiration and tips. Have you ever wanted to offer a specialty service? When you start your own private practice, you have the freedom to create the job of your dreams for yourself. If you are passionate about a certain service or population, make that your specialty! This helps you become known as “the one” to go to for that service so you can put your business on the fast track for success. My guest in this episode of Private Practice Success Stories is Mallory Millet, a Start Your Private Practice student. Mallory is a speech therapist who carved out a niche for herself based on her passion and where she saw a need. Mallory Millet is a Speech Pathologist who specializes in pediatric feeding disorders. Her focuses include infant reflux, infant oral development, and bottle feeding. Through her professional work, and with a lack of support during her own babies' feeding journeys, she created The Feeding Mom. It is here that she provides in-person and virtual support to empower parents through their feeding journeys locally and around the world. Her philosophy is: every parent deserves to love feeding their baby. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Mallory's journey to starting a private practice How specializing can help you grow The importance of referral marketing and social media marketing The benefits of parent coaching and how to add it to your services Other things you can offer in addition to therapy in your private practice How to price your services and when to raise your prices I love how Mallory created a really unique space for herself by offering both pediatric feeding therapy and parent coaching. So many SLP's and OTs say that they miss collaborating with parents in schools. With your own private practice, you have the freedom to add parent coaching if it is something that you are passionate about. There is no one way to run your private practice. You are in charge of what you offer and what you don't! Want to learn how to offer your own private therapy services just like Mallory? https://www.startyourprivatepractice.com/waitlist (Join the waitlist for the Start Your Private Practice Program) so you can sign up during Spring Enrollment. Have you ever felt called to start a private practice that serves the underserved populations in your community? Some of my most successful Start Your Private Practice students are bilingual and have started their private practice to serve linguistically diverse populations. This population often faces a long waitlist for bilingual service providers. They are in desperate need of people like you! In today's episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with one of my Start Your Private Practice students, Ana-Maria Jaramillo, to talk about how she decided to start her own private practice for the bilingual community and drastically increased her impact while also increasing her income. Ana-Maria Jaramillo, M.S., CCC-SLP is a nationally-certified bilingual pediatric integrative speech-language pathologist with extensive experience providing speech-langauge therapy to children ages birth to 18. For SLP's who focus on adult care in their private practices, one of the most important things to learn is Medicare. Many of our adult patients utilize it to pay for the care they need. But how do you set it up for your private practice? In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with one of my Start Your Private Practice students, Katie Brown, to talk about Medicare in the private practice setting. Katie runs her own practice for adult patients which has given her a lot of experience and knowledge on taking Medicare payments. Billing Medicare can be scary for SLP's. We have all been there! Katie is making it easier than ever for SLP's to get enrolled, learn how to bill properly, and document their services through her new program Mastering Medicare for SLP's. Katie Brown, MA, CCC-SLP, CBIS is a speech-language pathologist and certified brain injury specialist practicing in Buffalo, NY. She owns a private practice called Neuro Speech Solutions which specializes in therapy for adults with neurogenic communication and cognitive disorders. Katie is passionate about providing meaningful, functional therapy to those with aphasia and cognitive impairments related to stroke and TBI. Outside of her private practice, Katie is active in the SLP community. She is an advocate for person-centered care and creates digital materials aiming to help other medical SLPs feel more confident in providing personally relevant therapy. Katie is a mentor for the Start Your Private Practice Program and an SLP consultant for the aphasia app company, Tactus Therapy. She volunteers for several non-profits and provides a monthly workshop for brain injury survivors. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: What is included in Katie's Medicare program What mistakes to watch out for when applying for Medicare Why it's okay if a claim gets denied and what to do if it does How long the process of getting everything set up takes Why Katie's course will work for you even if you are already seeing Medicare clients The cost of inaction in your business We need more private practices out there that will accept Medicare. Katie is a phenomenal example of taking action. The more you delay figuring out Medicare, the more you and your patients will miss out. There's no better time than now to get started! This is a very special episode of Private Practice Success Stories! This is part two of a Student Success series I did where you'll hear from three SLPs who have successfully started Adult medical-focused private practices and three SLPs who have started specialty or bilingual practices full-time or “on the side.” Sometimes hearing the stories and successes of others is just the jolt of inspiration you need to get the ball rolling in your own private practice. This episode is meant to inspire you and show you real-life examples of people who have really done it and are out there running their own successful private practices. Can you have an adult-only practice? The answer is YES! These students are proof of that. They started their private practice without any previous business experience and without learning about private practices in grad school. That means that you can do the exact same thing. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Reasons why medical-based SLPs become interested in starting private practices The impact mentors had on me and my practice Why I cover Medicare in The Start Your Private Practice System Interviews with 6 of my students from the course Just because the speech industry is mostly dominated by pediatric services doesn't mean you can't find plenty of success working with adults only if that is what you are passionate about. There are so many adults in your area that are desperately searching for someone like you! I hope that you enjoyed hearing from Adult Medical and Specialist Private Practitioners! After listening to their stories, do you see what is possible for you too? Many of us have heard and practiced “collaboration over competition” and that's for a good reason! This abundance mindset could be what sets you up to build the successful private practice you've always dreamed of. If you are thinking of starting a private practice in a big city with a lot of therapy options, you may be feeling intimidated and wondering how you can possibly stand out when there are so many options for clients to choose from. Instead of seeing all of the so-called “competition” in your area and getting discouraged, you can instead see them as collaborators and referral sources. It is possible to work together with these other clinics and practices to serve the clients in your area and position yourself in a way that will bring you success no matter the size of your city. If you're thinking of starting your private practice in a big city, you'll love this episode of Private Practice Success Stories. We are talking with my Start Your Private Practice student Meera Raval Deters about starting in a bigger market and how she positioned her practice for massive growth this year. Meera Raval Deters, M.A., CCC-SLP, BCTS, ACAS is the owner of Super Speech Solutions, a concierge practice that provides in-home and online Speech Therapy to Houstonians and Texans. Meera received her Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Our Lady of the Lake University in 2006. She has worked in a variety of settings over the past fifteen years. Meera specializes in accent modification and child language, with an emphasis on autism. When she is not thinking about speech, Meera loves to spend time with her husband Jeff, cook, watch Hallmark movies, and go on walks with their dog, Daisy. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Thinking of your “competitors” as collaborators or referral partners instead How you can choose what kind of clients you want to work with The impact of creating a referral network The supportive culture inside of the Start Your Private Practice program The overwhelming need for more speech therapy providers Why you need to do your market research before you start your practice I love Meeras's drive, dedication, and the methodical way she started her practice as a way to serve more people on a deeper level. Her commitment to collaboration over competition is truly admirable. Private practices aren't just job settings, they're a movement. If you are ready to get started, you're in luck. Is this the year you finally take the leap and start your private practice? I talk to many people in various stages of their private practice journey. Some have established private practices already, some are just getting started, and some haven't taken the plunge just yet because they are waiting for the perfect time. What if you had a chance to be your own boss without quitting your job? That's exactly what today's guest, Dani Newcombe is here to talk about. When you work for someone else, they dictate your hours, your caseload, which clients you see, and your pay. I used to think of private practice as a type of work setting, but now I see that it is a vehicle that can get you the freedom and pay you deserve. Think of it as a “choose your own adventure” opportunity! It can greatly increase both your income and impact if you want it to. Dani and I are discussing this and more specifically, how and why she works in both the school setting and private practice. Dani Newcombe is a school and private practice SLP in Indiana. She graduated from Loma Linda University in 2018. She is currently in year 4 as an SLP. She owns her own practice, The Messy SLP, LLC and you can find her posting videos for comedic relief on Instagram @themessyslp She is currently working on her clinical doctorate with an estimated graduation date of August 2022. Outside of being an SLP, Dani is planning a wedding for April 2022, enjoys being active, and loves playing with her pup. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: The freedom that a private practice brings you Why it's easier to start than you think Dani's advice for anyone considering starting a private practice Why it can help defeat burnout How to price your services in your private practice I hope this episode gave you the inspiration you need to take the leap and finally start the private practice you've been dreaming of. I always love to start the new year off with some predictions for private practice, so in this episode, I am sharing what I'm predicting, how you can be at the forefront of all of this knowledge, and how to adjust accordingly. I do an episode like this at the beginning of every new year for a couple of reasons. First, I love watching trends happen and predicting things. Second, I want the Independent Clinician audience (that's you!) to have a heads up so that you know where to place your energy. I am not always right, but I have been doing this long enough to be able to make some pretty good predictions over the years! In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Why I think more SLPs will start private practices on the side The most popular reasons why SLPs will start private practices The pattern I am seeing when it comes to the growth of private practices If I think that student loan debt will be canceled in 2022 What I think will happen with telepractice in the future Why you need to advocate for coverage in 2022 My tips for hiring in 2022 What do you think of these predictions? I want to hear! I love to chat with other private practitioners in my audience, so no matter what your private practice goals are in 2022, send me a DM over on https://www.instagram.com/independentclinician/ (Instagram)! A part-time private practice is a great option for anyone that is interested in starting a private practice but that isn't sure if they want to take the leap into it full time. To be honest, I didn't even know that part-time private practice was an option when I first started my private practice, but now it is how I teach the students in the Start Your Private Practice program to get started. In this episode, I am talking about how to start working with private clients part-time or on the side of your job, so you can see how it can work before you do any leaping or jumping into private practice. This is the easiest way that you can start a private practice, and it is how I started mine. I am sharing how I got started, what I learned along the way, and how you can do it too! In Today's Episode, We Discuss: How I got started in private practice part-time What I charged when I started How many clients I was seeing each week on the side of my job How part-time private practice changed my confidence and finances The many different ways you can make private practice yours I hope this episode gives you some things to think about - just like it gave my friends some things to think about, many of which ended up joining me in private practice. Danni Augustine is a speech-language pathologist and alum of the Start Your Private Practice program who was able to pay off $52,000 worth of debt and double her school SLP salary through her private practice. Isn't that impressive?! She is very much into finances, so she educates other SLPs on how to get ahead financially. This episode features an Instagram Live that Danni and I did where we discuss several ways that SLPs can get ahead financially without fear. Throughout the episode, we talk about so many things, but we focus on the importance of investing in yourself so you can improve your finances as an SLP. Whether you already have a private practice or you are interested in starting one, these tips all about finances will help you prepare for a better financial future. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: The rate of inflation and how that relates to our salaries Starting a private practice as a way to create other streams of income Investing in yourself as a way to make more money Investment mindset versus transaction mindset Why SLPs should be earning more Whether or not you should wait to start your private practice until you pay off your debt Examples of smart ways to invest your money as an SLP Danni is an action taker, and that is clear in this episode. Only a handful of speech-language pathologists were offering telepractice before the pandemic, but our entire profession switched to telepractice overnight once it started! Some speech-language pathologists absolutely love it and some prefer in-person. Those who love telepractice are trying to find ways to continue to do it because they love the flexibility it offers. I always tell those clinicians to start their own private practice and offer teletherapy! Starting a private practice that offers teletherapy is a lot easier and cheaper than you'd think, so in this episode, I am breaking down how you could do it and telling you about some clinicians that have implemented teletherapy into their private practices! In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Why you should consider cutting out the middleman How business licensing differs for telepractice Whether or not you should take insurance Examples of how clinicians offer private practice differently The benefit of convenience to both clinicians and clients If you are ready to use your clinical skills to earn what you're worth and have the flexibility that you crave, private practice is the number one way to accomplish this. It's completely up to you as the business owner to decide if you want to offer telepractice, in-person services, or a mix of both. Decide what's right for you and what's right for your clients! Are you a Type A or Type B SLP? There is a belief that speech-language pathologists who identify as Type A SLPs are more suited for private practice, and before I started my Private Practice, I thought the same thing! As a Type B SLP myself, the thought of this made me very nervous because I was worried that I wouldn't be successful. In this episode, I am sharing my thoughts and feelings on this idea now as well as some data that I think you will find very interesting! In Today's Episode, We Discuss: What I feared before I started my private practice The things I did to stay organized and on top of deadlines Why I started my education company How to leverage your unique strengths The strengths of Type A SLPs versus Type B SLPs I was shocked in the best way when I realized that a lot of SLPs are Type B! I love it when false beliefs, assumptions, and stereotypes are challenged, including my own. Private practice isn't for any one type of person. It's for anyone who has the drive and the inclination to help people! Instead of trying to be someone else or wishing you were more Type A or Type B, why don't you let all of that go and lean into your strengths? Especially in Private Practice, you can focus on the things that you are good at, and you can rely on your team to do the things that you aren't so good at. If you're an SLP who is stressed out right now and working in a school, a hospital, early intervention, a university clinic, or someone else's private practice, this is a must-listen episode. It features a conversation that I had with Lauren Hermann that originally aired on Instagram Live. We discussed common stressors that SLPs are facing right now and how they can advocate for themselves. Lauren is a speech-language pathologist, author of the book titled But My Speech Is Fine, and copywriter for various SLP and healthcare businesses. She's passionate about advocating for the SLP profession and improving interprofessional practice. Lauren and I both believe that if you're stressed out by how things are going at work, you have to do something about it. This conversation will give you the tips and confidence to do exactly that. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: The benefits of starting your own private practice What you need to get started in private practice Self-limiting beliefs that many SLPs have Defining which underserved community you could serve How easy it can be to start a private practice with the right guidance How stress affects our ability to help others Sometimes life has various twists and turns and initial plans end up changing. Those changes can be scary to navigate, but they often leave you in a much better place. Lauren is a great example of someone who has taken control of the twists and turns in her career and has come out on top. She is so much better for them and so is her career! Remember, if you want things to get better, you have to make them better! Don't wait for opportunities. Create them. Everything is figureoutable. Do you believe that? I do! My guest, Dr. Dawn Moore, does too, so she is joining me to share her private practice success story. We talk about how she got started, how she grew, and the challenges that she has faced along the way. Dr. Dawn Moore ClinScD., CCC-SLP, COM® is the founder of Expressions Speech, Language, & Myofunctional Center in Burlington, North Carolina. She is a certified and licensed Speech-Language Pathologist holding the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Additionally, she is a Certified Orofacial Myologist® through the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM). Dr. Moore has over 23 years of experience in Speech-Language Pathology, earning her clinical doctorate in 2018. For 15 years, she practiced in the schools of North Carolina as both a clinician and Lead SLP with recognition as a Teacher of Excellence and expanded into pediatric private practice in 2010, serving children of all ages. Her main interests include orofacial myology and speech sound disorders (articulation, phonological delay, and apraxia). She uses her own program, Let's Hear It For /R/! which was the subject of her doctoral capstone, to correct the difficult /r/ sound. For phonology, she uses and teaches others how to use Barbara Hodson's Cycles for Phonology due to the success she continues to have with the program. Dr. Moore became a Certified Orofacial Myologist (COM®) after struggling to find help for her own daughter with a severe tongue thrust. Through this training and practice, she is presenting across the country educating SLPs, orthodontists, ENTs, and dentists about the impact myofunctional disorders have on speech, feeding, chewing, breathing, and dentition. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Transitioning from the schools into private practice The learning curve that comes with billing Finding the right people and the right clients for your private practice How to get your name out there and get referrals Making your private practice work with the help of SLPAs Learning from others and applying those lessons to your own practice There are times when Dawn mentions challenges associated with private practice throughout this episode, but keep in mind that everything is figureoutable. When you hit a roadblock (which you will) it's worth trying to figure out a way around it. If it was easy all the time, everyone would do it! What separates those who are successful from those who are not is persisting versus giving up when things get difficult. One of the best ways to be successful in private practice is to make sure that you have a network of people who can support you. My programs offer a community of like-minded private practitioners who help you navigate the bumps and celebrate the wins. Should you take private pay or insurance for your private practice? There are pros and cons to each of these options! In this episode of the Private Practice Success Stories podcast, I'm discussing the options and helping you decide which route to go. I want you to know that there is no one way to do it, and you get to choose which one feels best for you and for your community. You can always start with private pay and then branch out into becoming an insurance provider later if you need to increase your volume of clients! I've helped over 10,000 SLPs start, grow, and scale successful private practices using both private pay and insurance, so I am answering your questions about billing, how to decide which payer sources to accept, and more. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: What I recommend to most SLPs Deciding what your rate is with private pay Which option allows you to start your private practice quicker The pros and cons of payer sources What a superbill is and how it works for practitioners and families Getting paid in private practice is really important because the business needs money to support it, but remember, you get to decide which sources you accept and you can always change your mind later! In the Start Your Private Practice Program, we teach SLPs how to bill for private pay insurance, Medicare and Medicaid, and how to give superbills, so whichever route you choose, you will know exactly how to do it. If you want more information on how to start a private practice step by step, head over to https://www.independentclinician.com/ (www.independentclinician.com) to sign up for one of my free trainings or one of my paid implementation programs! Do you want to create a business or businesses that help pay the bills, but also make sure that you have a work-life balance? You're going to love this episode with my guest, Martha Horrocks, because she is doing exactly that! Martha has a private practice, a TpT business, AND a Boom Learning business, but she intentionally keeps her businesses smaller and more manageable to make sure that she's maintaining a work-life balance. Martha is the owner and speech-language pathologist at Martha Speech, LLC - a pediatric private practice that serves children across Maine via teletherapy. Martha will be celebrating the one-year anniversary of her practice in November! She also shares resources and ideas related to her passion (fluency disorders) on her professional Instagram, Martha Speech, and creates materials for SLPs on Teachers Pay Teachers and Boom Learning. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Choosing your own adventure as a private practitioner Learning where you are most effective as a clinician Creating the business that serves you and your community Why success doesn't always mean having a huge private practice Word of mouth, SEO, and more marketing strategies Why it's okay to start small with private practice I love that Martha is not only passionate about both of her businesses, but they pay the bills and allow her to have the balance that was missing when she worked in the schools. Private practice isn't just a work setting, it's a vehicle to help you get what you want and also help the people around you get what they need. Do you struggle with putting yourself out there? Does this affect your ability to market your private practice or hold you back completely from starting one? Do you have so much going on in your life that you can't even begin to believe that having a successful private practice is in the cards for you? Unfortunately, all of these feelings are pretty common. To help you with that, I am joined by Amanda Modrowski in this episode because she has overcome all of those feelings. She is going to share her story and share some pretty incredible marketing strategies and tips too. Amanda Modrowski is a Speech-Language Pathologist who has worked in almost every setting in her career. After working in multiple settings, she realized that none of them let her practice speech pathology in a way that fulfilled her and didn't add mountains of paperwork or stress to her life. So, Amanda went looking for another option and found it when she discovered Jena's SYPP program. After slowly beginning in 2018 to get her “ducks in a row” while working full-time in a public school system, she finally pushed past the fear and went full-time into private practice in the summer of 2020. Since getting her first client, she has never second-guessed her choice and has never felt so happy and fulfilled working with her private clients. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Creative ways to get paid How to market your services How you can use your time wisely to build connections Getting past the fear of putting yourself out there Using business cards, brochures, flyers, and more Getting prepared and starting small Pushing past fear to find your niche Making more of an impact Tips for starting a private practice during a busy season of life If you have a lot of things going on in your life and you needed to hear that it is possible to start a private practice even with a lot of distractions OR if you're experiencing a little bit of imposter syndrome and fear, I really hope you find this episode inspiring and motivating. A mentor of mine once said, “you can either let your kids be the excuse or the reason,” and Amanda is a great example of someone who started her private practice, put herself out there, and is now on my mentor team helping other students just like you get started. If you want more information about The Start Your Private Practice Program (the same program Amanda went through!) visit http://www.independentclinician.com (www.IndependentClinician.com)! We are approaching our goal of helping 1,000 SLPs start their private practices this year, and I want you to be one of them! Every private practice starts with one client. Amanda's did, and yours will too. Have you ever thought about building a telepractice? Have you thought about being the CEO of a telepractice? My guest in this episode, Glory Lichon, did just that, so she is joining me to share her story! Glory Lichon is an Air Force veteran that started Glow Bright Therapy in April 2019 with the encouragement and support of her husband Brian Lichon (also an Air Force veteran). Due to the burnout in the schools, Glory made the difficult decision to leave after five years of being a school SLP. During that time, Brian encouraged her to start their own practice with a mission to fulfill the need of providing accessible services through the online delivery model. Glow Bright Therapy is a veteran-owned telepractice with a mission to provide accessible and effective services to children and families in need of support. They truly believe in not only providing evidence-based therapy, but also building meaningful connections and relationships with the families they serve because that is also an integral piece to supporting our families. They believe in not only supporting and helping the kids they serve, but also empowering the parents in knowing how to help their children at home. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: The benefit of telepractice due to its accessibility What it looks like to start a private practice that offers telepractice The difference between telepractice in the past and telepractice now Navigating private pay and insurance How to communicate your value confidently Moving out of therapy and into the CEO role Working through mindset blocks as a new CEO Glory is a member of one of my higher-level programs, and it has been wonderful to watch her private practice grow. She has been listening to the podcast and utilizing the resources that I have for SLPs for years now! I am so impressed with how she's built a private practice that works for her, her family, her community, and even communities and states that she doesn't live in by bringing telepractice services to people who need them. Why are some private practices popular, in demand, and constantly getting new referrals and others are working hard, spinning their wheels, and barely getting any inquiries? It all comes down to word of mouth! In this episode, we're talking about word of mouth marketing and one of the major things that you need to focus on in order to get it. Word of mouth marketing is what I like to call the “holy grail” of marketing, and it is something that really can benefit those of you who are hitting roadblocks. Keep in mind, this is a more advanced marketing strategy for those that are looking to grow, but it is an important one. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: What word of mouth marketing is What happens if you don't position yourself optimally How your positioning impacts your practice Why you should change your marketing to reflect your positioning How the Grow Your Private Practice coaching program can help you When it comes to your private practice, what do you want to be known for? What do you want people to think of when they think about you and your practice? I really want you to think about these questions and answer them honestly. Positioning your private practice isn't something that happens overnight, but it is something that you can control. I hope this episode gives you a little taste of what you can expect from my Grow Your Private Practice coaching program. We have a lot of conversations just like this one in the program, but we don't just talk about it, we take action on it! If you think this episode is helpful and you're interested in learning more about the Grow Your Private Practice coaching program, head on over to Instagram and send me a DM @independentclinician with the word “grow”. You can start a private practice that plays to your strengths and interests. This means that you can offer something outside of the box! Madeline Boe, my guest in this episode, did just that! She offers Hippotherapy through her private practice, so she is joining me to talk all about how she got started and why she decided to offer something a little different. Madeline Boe is the owner of Unbridled Abilities, a private practice that provides speech-language pathology services for children and young adults in Western Wisconsin and the East Metro (MSP). Unbridled Abilities provides speech services in natural environments including family homes, community parks/libraries, local storefronts, and job sites. Additionally, services may be provided within a farm setting where horses and other animals can be used to help clients achieve their goals. Madeline has attended continuing education through the following organizations in order to safely and successfully utilize animals and equine movement as a part of her treatment plans: the American Hippotherapy Association (AHA), Horse Powered Reading and the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International. This is the perfect story for those of you who want to get a little bit more creative with private practice and incorporate more of what you love with your students and in your community. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: The many possibilities there are when deciding on the direction of your private practice Advice for leaving the school setting How to be flexible for families and yourself but also have boundaries The importance of trusting the timing of your private practice The pros and cons of having a larger caseload Thinking outside of the box when it comes to funding Madeline got her start in my program, the Start Your Private Practice program, and this is a wonderful example of a student who created a private practice that is perfect for her and her community. If you want access to the exact same program and resources that Madeline had to get started, make sure you sign up for the waitlist for The Start Your Private Practice System and join when we re-open. Are you thinking about starting a specialty-based private practice? Do you already have one? In this episode, I am talking to an SLP celebrity, Autumn Reed Henning, about how having a specialized business and private practice has really helped her increase her impact and find success fast as a private practice owner. Autumn R. Henning, MS, CCC-SLP, COM®, IBCLC is a certified and licensed Speech-Language Pathologist with a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). She is a Certified Orofacial Myologist® through the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM), and she is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Autumn specializes in orofacial function and development throughout the lifespan. She works with infants to adults in her private practice, Chrysalis Orofacial in Greenville, SC. She also has trained thousands of professionals from varying fields internationally in her E3 Model of Care and flagship course TOTS: Tethered Oral Tissues Specialty Training. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Teaching others what is working for you Creating resources that you wish that you had Networking opportunities that can help your private practice Struggles when you're trying to predict your growth Running a specialty-based private practice The best way to advertise Finding the right people for your team One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is that you get to decide what you want to do, who you want to serve, and how you will help them. If you find something that you really like to do and you're good at it over time, you might also want to teach other people how to do it too just like Autumn and myself. Teaching allows both Autumn and myself to have a much bigger impact than either of us could if we stayed at the local level, which is one of the reasons why we do it. Do you ever feel like you aren't being challenged enough or you are ready for a change? It's an interesting feeling when you start to feel restless as an SLP. It's like you're going through the motions and you know what to do, but you're no longer challenged or excited by it. Jamie West Florida is joining me in this episode because she felt that exact same way before she started her own private practice with the help of the Start Your Private Practice Program. Jamie and I are really digging into this feeling as well as what you can do as an SLP if you relate to it. Jamie has been a speech-language pathologist since 2012. Upon graduating, she has worked in different settings, including schools, home health, an ABA clinic, and a private clinic. With a family with a strong small business background, she was always drawn to the idea of private practice, but years of fear of failure held her back. After some pep talks from her peloton and the support of her family, she decided to just go for it! Slowly, over the last 3 years, she went from one private client on the side up to a home-visit-based caseload and recently, into a brick-and-mortar where she sees children for speech-language therapy, dyslexia intervention, and runs various camps! In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Gaining confidence one client at a time Building the type of private practice that you want Specializing in dyslexia as an SLP Creating a business that can run without you Planning for growth in your private practice Making decisions with you and your family in mind I love Jamie's energy, drive, and commitment to working with a clinical population that she's interested in and inspired by. Remember, if you're looking to try something new like a private practice, it's best to be in a community of people who are going through the same things to get support and guidance from. Did you learn anything about private practice when you were in graduate school? If not, you're not alone, and it's not your fault that you don't know anything about starting or growing a private practice. There are actually only two SLP grad programs that have a practicum, not even a full course in private practice... In this episode, we are talking about why that is and more importantly, what you can do about it. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: The reason more and more SLPs are interested in private practice Why the gap for learning how to go into private practice feels so big Why it's not too late to learn how to start a private practice Resources that are free to help you get started It's time to think about your goals and finally take control of your professional, personal and financial life. Private practice is the only way to do that. Remember, just because you didn't learn about private practice in graduate school doesn't mean that you can't learn about it now. With my help, you'll learn things about billing and insurance, marketing, the legalities, how to make your own website, and how to finally get that freedom, flexibility, fulfillment, and finances that you desire and deserve. When I first started my career as a speech-language pathologist, I never thought I would own a business. I honestly used to think that business was boring… I only ever wanted to help people, and I didn't think that becoming a business owner was the way to do that. You might think the same thing! Even if your instinct is to think that business is boring and you see yourself primarily as a helping people person, this episode offers some really valuable lessons. In the episode, I am sharing three lessons from business leaders that helped me become the successful business owner that I am today. I share quotes from Franklin Covey, Marie Forleo, and Zig Ziglar, and how they relate to owning a private practice. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Why you should think about your final vision first The mindset you need to adopt when you feel stuck How to have everything you want in life Why you need to stop putting yourself last Remember, if you put your clients and yourself first, you can all have what you want. I encourage you to grab a post-it note, write down these three lessons and decide how you're going to put them into practice. One year from now, see how far you've come! Are you ready to take control over your professional, personal and financial life? My guest in this episode, Ashley Perkins, knew this was something she wanted even before finishing grad school! She knew that she wanted to be in business for herself because she wanted control over her time and the time that she could spend with her family, so she started seeing private clients as soon as she earned her CCC. Ashley is the founder of Perkins Therapy Group, which was established upon recognizing the need for specialized speech, feeding, and orofacial myofunctional therapy within the Eunice area. Ashley and I both believe that private practice is a vehicle to get what you want, so she is talking to us all about how she took a chance on herself and created the life that she had imagined for herself and her family. In Today's Episode, We Discuss: Deciding to lean into your dream Why saying yes is so monumental even if it's to something small Leaving a full-time job to take the leap into private practice Why you should try to keep your personal expenses lean Navigating overhead costs and how to keep your business lean Why it's so important to understand what you want How to use your dream to create a plan I encourage you to spend some time identifying your personal, professional, and financial goals, and make a plan to make it happen, just like Ashley did! I want to help you do the same, so head on over to http://startyourprivatepractice.com/webinar (startyourprivatepractice.com/webinar) to watch my free training and learn the ins and outs of private practice. My guest on this episode is Jena Castro-Casbon, a private practice consultant who works with SLPs just like you to realize their dream of starting and growing their very own private practice. Jena has helped over 10,000 SLPs get started and grow their businesses to their definition of success. We talk about the importance of mentorship and how two colleagues helped inspire her to take the leap and start her own private practice. As Jena says, it only takes 1 client to start your practice, but that 1st client is always the hardest to get. We then talk about the 5 P's to get your practice off the ground, which are to picture, protect, promote, payment (get paid) and prosper. We wrap up by talking about the common reasons why SLPs are nervous to get started. From waiting until you're an expert with a specialization to the fear of failure we talk about strategies to overcome these mental hurdles that cause SLPs remain an employee and not an independent clinician. My 3 big takeaways from this conversation with Jena are... 1. Use a tool to set the vision for your practice. Jena has a Private Practice Roadmap to help you get started and see if being a private practitioner is the right career path for you. 2. Seek mentorship from someone who is a private practitioner. Just like Jena received guidance when she got started, many SLPs like to pay it forward and help others. 3. There is no perfect time to get started. If you wait until the perfect opportunity, you will never get your practice off the ground. Ever thought about starting a private practice, now or in the future? In this training, Jena Castro-Casbon, MS CCC-SLP will discuss the steps that SLPs follow in the path to start a successful private practice. Jena is here to dispel some common misconceptions regarding what a private practice has to “look” like, who it has to treat, and how you have to run it. Spoiler alert: there are no two private practices alike. The beauty of a private practice is that you can make it into whatever you want it to be. That's some incredible flexibility.
