Guest: Perry Flynn, MEd., CCC-SLP - The guest details the difference between therapeutic horseback riding and hippotherapy. This conversational format presents the benefits of both for many populations and implications for speech and language therapy. In addition, Perry discusses several case studies and real-life experiences as a speech-language pathologist and Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) certified therapeutic riding instructor.
Kathryn Yuma is the Development Manager at Hearts & Horses, a therapeutic riding center in Loveland, Colorado. The mission at Hearts & Horses is to promote the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social wellbeing of people with special needs. In this episode, Kathryn talks about the magic of therapeutic riding and why it can be an excellent choice for teens struggling with social and emotional issues, teens at risk, and teens who need physical and occupational therapy. The natural gait (movement) of the horse stimulates human walking movement in a manner that cannot be replicated mechanically. While riding, participants must constantly make postural adjustments to maintain their balance, which in turn increases their overall balance, orientation, and body awareness. Other benefits include improved muscle tone, posture, range of motion, flexibility, social skills and emotional well-being. In addition, our horses provide a non-judgmental relationship, accepting individuals for who they are regardless of physical, emotional, or social abilities. Key Takeaways What makes a horse so special? Do you have to love horses to begin riding or working with a horse? Hippotherapy is horse interactive therapy services that are a direct medical treatment provided by a licensed physical therapist or occupational therapist and can start as young as age two. The Changing Leads Program is designed to help youth-at-risk find friendship, develop trust and form a deep connection through partnering with a horse. The program focuses on teaching transferable skills to enhance personal, school, family, and community relationships through Equine Facilitated Learning. Teens and adults who suffer from PTSD have found great healing in horses. How does Kathryn structure each program? There are 30 horses on the property that various students can work with or grow with as they progress, with riders starting as young as 2 years old. It's very hard to describe the magic and the beauty that comes from horse therapy. Sponsored by Lessons in Leadership online program: Edgerety.com Resources Heartsandhorses.org Quotes: “The magical thing about horses, or even animals, is that there is no judgment. They see you as a human being.” “Teens don't like to recognize that they have vulnerabilities, and it is really incredible to see what horses can bring out and help them to heal.” “Every horse is different; they have their own personalities. They're just like humans; no horse is the same.”

“Disability doesn't mean inability”. I can almost hear my father saying those words to me from the hospital bed. A place he spent a lot of time as a Diabetic and amputee. Years of wear and tear due to poor diet and exercise put this former semi-pro athlete turned attorney in a hospital gown far too often. But, what you may or may not know about my dad is that he was the king of good humor and positive attitude. My father has been gone 19 years this month. So, to continue to conversation about disability and in honor of Diabetes Awareness Month this November, I'm sharing a special episode of HIListically Speaking. Gustavo Serafini invited me on his podcast Enabled Disabled to talk about my journey with a disabled parent. During our time, I shared a lot about how my dad's health impacted me as a child and how I used what I learned from him to embrace the illness and create a greater understanding and compassion for disabilities. Plus, my own battle with chronic pain due to TMJ and surgery. And a powerful teaching moment from a disabled child that created a shift in my life to make better choices for myself and in support others in need. In a month that is filled with gratitude, I'm grateful you're choosing to tune in and take a piece of my story with you on your own journey. Add the Enabled Disabled Podcast to your list. Why are horses such good therapy partners? Several reasons, but this episode focuses primarily on horse movement and how it impacts the rider. As therapists and instructors, we don't just pick a random horse! We consider movement, conformation and several other factors when selecting a partner for our riders. Listen to hear Edye Godden, OTR/L, Clinical Specialist in Hippotherapy, CTRI and Shelby Winnail, HETRA's Equine Operations Manager, CTRI, discuss a horse that has lateral movement, and how we use that movement to facilitate different goals in our riders. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Is there a rider that is too medically complex for hippotherapy or are there adaptations that can be made? Every kid and adult is evaluated for the program, looking at the needs and the type of therapy. We look at each case for precautions to find out whether hippotherapy is the best and safest option for reaching goals. Our goal is to find a therapy that works for each body and what's medically appropriate. What is the ideal age for someone to start hippotherapy? For hippotherapy, you have to be at least two years old. What changes have you seen in Ford from when he started riding a year ago? When we met Ford, he was a little over three years old and his legs were so tight that we could barely get him on a horse. It was hard for him to be on the horse and he wasn't able to sit up himself on or off the horse. Within the first few sessions, his legs relaxed so much and he needed less and less help. Because he was able to engage his core, relax his legs and relax his hips and sit up, we were able to start playing games and working on hand control and interaction. His confidence and his endurance has grown so much too. How is the gait of the horse beneficial in hippotherapy? The muscles we use is one part, but also the message the brain gets about what normal movement is when the horse is moving in three dimensions- forward and backward, side to side and rotating. The pelvis of the horse, rotated down has a similar movement to the gait we do when we're walking. A horse walks 1800-2000 steps in a 30 minute session, which is a ton of repetition that a person has to react to in a short amount of time. How can the community support Little Bit? We have a giving tree online of how people can donate or help. We always appreciate the support. We are volunteer-supported and need volunteers for horse care, barn care, in sessions, office support and cleaning. Since their domestication approximately 5000 years ago, horses have played an important role for humanity. They have carried soldiers into battle, pulled wagons and tilled fields, Herded cattle, and provided a mode of transportation. In other cases, their beauty can be seen through performance and art like the dancing Lipizzaner Stallions or those used by Mexican Charros and Mariachis. No matter the view, horses are helpful companions and majestic animals, but their magic doesn't end with work tasks or dance performances.Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center, or Little Bit, is a community where horses transform the bodies, minds, and spirits of people with disabilities. Since 1976, Little Bit has been providing healing through equine therapy. Their main programs, Adaptive Riding, Hippotherapy, and Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy helped over 500 individuals in 2018, ranging in age from 2 to 77. In this episode, The Knowbodies are happy to sit down with a Pittsburgh local organization, Orchardview Stables. We sit down with Tessa Maxwell, Katie Bunn, and Mary Kay Soergel of Orchardview Stables to talk about the incredible services offered by the stables as well as some of the personal stories that brought all of these caring specialists together. Some of the key points that we cover in today’s episode: The foundation of the Equine Assisted Therapy and Adaptive Riding programs at Orchardview. Some of the personal stories that brought Tessa (a special education needs specialist) and Katie (a Physical Therapist specializing in pediatric care) together to collaborate in equine assisted care. What is Hippotherapy vs. Equine Assisted Therapeutic Riding? What do these services entail and what kind of riders do Tessa and Katie work with on a daily basis. Katie breaks down some of the specific elements of therapeutic horse riding including the mechanics of the horse pelvic motion and its affect on postural response, rhythmic movement and posturing for spastic muscle tone, and the unique emotional bond that stems from a close human-animal relationship throughout the course of a therapy. Some personal stories of incredible relationships forged between some of the riders and the therapy horses. Getting to know the Orchardview Staff (horses too!) and some of their responsibilities around the stable. A CALL TO ACTION! – Orchardview offers their services to a broad range of participants and riders at little to no cost! Their non-profit “Orchardview Stables” helps fund their services and upkeep for the horses so that they can continue to provide excellent care without devastating costs to riders. Orchardview thrives through the volunteer support of the community. They offer simple training to all volunteers (from enthusiasts to students to therapists!) in basic horse care and how to aid the riders during their therapy sessions. The therapeutic riders could HUGELY benefit from an overhead lift system to help assist riders onto horseback. The non-profit has already established applications for grants and if you have any information or connections that may help contribute please reach out to the instructors at Orchardview Stables or ourselves at The Knowbodies and we will make it happen! For more information please check out the website at Orchardviewstables.org to learn more about volunteer opportunities or how you can help contribute to an incredible non-profit run by a family organization that cares and work their butts off for their riders!

She has a slew of certifications from courses that she has taken over the years. Rebecca also provides Myofasial Release and Craniosacral Therapy.
