Hey Team! We're kicking off 2024 with the incredible Jessica McCabe - creator, writer, and host of the award-winning YouTube channel How to ADHD. I'm sure a lot of you are already familiar with Jessica's work as her YouTube channel has more than a million subscribers, but for those of you who haven't, her channel contains a wealth of knowledge about ADHD and is one of the things that kicked me in the pants to start taking my ADHD more seriously. And now she's coming out with a book: How to ADHD: An Insider's Guide to Working with Your Brain (Not Against It) - which is coming out on January 2nd - so tomorrow if you're listening to this when this episode comes out. In our conversation today, Jessica and I discussed how we want to go from surviving our ADHD to thriving with it, to get past some of our issues with executive function and universal design. We also get into a lot of stuff about her book and how she was able to use a lot of the strategies that she wrote about in the book to also help her write that same book. Honestly, this episode was a blast to record and I hope you enjoy as much as I did putting it together. Be sure to check out howtoadhdbook.com to find Jessica's book Feel free to ask me a question on my Contact Page Find the full show note at HackingYourADHD.com/164 This Episode's Top Tips  When we want to move from surviving to thriving we want to start looking at not just how we can get more things done, but what's worth doing. Even projects we're interested in can be difficult for us to work on, so it's important for us to keep them exciting with variety. When planning out those big projects, work backward from where you want to be to figure out all the steps in between so that we can see that path to done. Effort for us is not the problem, so trying harder is not the answer.

It's estimated that ADHD affects more than 8 million adults (or up to 5% of Americans) and 6.1% of children. Unfortunately, many people don't even know they have it. For decades, people with ADHD have been ignored, dismissed and even derided. As one of the most misunderstood diagnoses, it's easy for ADHD to be treated like a joke or a superpower, even though it's neither.  NYT best selling author of "How to ADHD", Jessica McCabe, dives deep into everything from how the brain of a person with ADHD works to how their loved ones can better understand and support them. Jessica opens up about what it was like to be the one with “potential” who could never quite bring it to fruition. Tap into this week's episode if you have ADHD or love someone with it for some great tips on how to navigate it successfully.    Watch the conversation on YouTube: https://youtu.be/z4lIxTgL1cU?si=RDB7FMJmrHohXIO2    SPONSORED BY: 7 Agents of Change Pack, visit to learn more: http://triggeredafevents.com    KEY POINTS & QUOTES: ADHD is not a joke or a superpower. Make space for hyperfocus but install guardrails in your mind to stay on track. Studies have shown that ADHD may be polygenetic.  Pills don't teach skills. Simply medicating your child is not enough.  Instead of telling someone to “calm down”, try telling them to “slow down.”  Try to work with your unique brain rather than fight against it.    CONNECT WITH OUR GUEST: Jessica McCabe Website: https://howtoadhd.com/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/howtoadhd  TedxTalk: https://www.ted.com/talks/jessica_mccabe_this_is_what_it_s_really_like_to_live_with_adhd_jan_2017?language=en Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/howtoadhd/?hl=en CONNECT WITH YOUR HOSTS: Alechia Reese For coaching, visit: http://gotvaluenation.com Instagram | http://instagram.com/alechiareese LinkedIn | linkedin.com/in/alechiareese Dani Bourdeau For coaching, visit: http://danifostercoaching.com Instagram | http://instagram.com/thedanibourdeau   RESOURCES: For more info, visit: http://triggeredafpodcast.com Like what you're hearing? Navigating ADHD to learn how to work with your ADHD brain and not against it   It's estimated that ADHD affects more than 8 million adults (or up to 5% of Americans) and 6.1% of children. Unfortunately, many people don't even know they have it. For decades, people with ADHD have been ignored, dismissed and even derided. As one of the most misunderstood diagnoses, it's easy for ADHD to be treated like a joke or a superpower, even though it's neither. On this week's episode we are joined by the NYT best selling author of "How to ADHD", Jessica McCabe. We dive into everything from how the brain of a person with ADHD works to how their loved ones can better understand and support them. Jessica opens up about what it was like to be the one with “potential” who could never quite bring it to fruition. After years of reaching out to experts, devouring articles, and sharing her discoveries on YouTube, Jessica has been able to bring a new perspective to the masses (her TED Talk has been viewed 19 million times) about what it means to live with ADHD. Tap into this week's episode if you have ADHD or love someone with it for some great tips on how to navigate it successfully.    KEY POINTS & QUOTES: ADHD is not a joke or a superpower. ADHD brains aren't broken, they just need different things to function at their best.  They have enormous memory, but relatively small processing capacity.   That means they can connect dots like nobodys business, but can get overstimulated seeing EVERYTHING AT ONCE.  Things like task switching and unacknowledged over stimulation can have a negative impact.   Mini-Lesson: What ADHD has to do with your voice ADHD Resources: ADHD 2.0 by Dr. Edward Hallowell (a classic, well written, well researched intro to an ADHD brain) Jessica McCabe's How to ADHD Youtube Our favorite podcast, 'Ologies does ADHD  Frankie Mansfield Berkoben

If ADHD is more about losing interest and motivation than it is about attention and concentration what does that mean for living with ADHD? Everyone uses dopamine for motivation, experiencing pleasures and rewards, but it works differently in ADHD brains.  Understanding our dopamine differences and what our options are can help us on one level--to feel good and have more fun, on another it could be life-changing to be able to know what to do when we need more dopamine to get and stay motivated or ways to deal with being overstimulated. We are going to explore the idea of a dopa menu, popularized by Jessica McCabe of How to ADHD and Eric Tivers of ADHD reWired.  Moira shares extra tips, ideas, and strategies for creating your own dopa menu.  Sign up to Patreon to get exclusive content, early access to episodes, monthly group coaching calls, and more:https://www.patreon.com/adhdfriendlylifestyle

It makes me angry that acknowledging a mental health diagnosis and receiving help is still a source of stigma and shame.  I am grateful to the brave and clever people who have taken to YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, not to mention those who have started podcasts, to normalize mental health conditions by dropping their masks and sharing their struggles. They have done more to raise awareness and spread hope in the last few years than the psychiatric community has been able to do in decades.  If you suspect or know you have ADHD, you don't have to pledge allegiance to any of the factions within this community (‘It's a superpower!” vs “It's a disability!”) but you do need to decide what you make it mean about you, your life and your abilities.  Listen in as I share my journey with ADHD and the choices I have made that just might work for you too. Online influencers I follow who talk about ADHD:Podcasts:   Distraction Podcast with Dr. Ned Hallowellhttps://www.distractionpodcast.com/category/episodes/Proudly ADHD with Cathy Rashidianhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/proudly-adhd-at-work-and-in-business/id1483365005Excuse my ADHD with Jeanette Grahamhttps://www.excusemyadhd.com/podcasts-list/Instagram:  Tracy Otsuka's ADHD for Smart Ass Women @tracyotsukaLyn Miner- Rosen @adhdcoachlynRene Brooks @blackgirllostkeysTikTok:Catie Osborn @catieosaurusDani Donovan @danidonovanChalene Johnson @chalenejohnsonYouTube: Dr. Edward Hallowell https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUxHRVjLIEIS0eeQR6MXONAHow to ADHD by Jessica McCabe https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-nPM1_kSZf91ZGkcgy_95QOur Pod Praise (podcast review) this week comes from Cadon23, who writes: “Fun, inspiring and impactful!
