NHL – Connor Bedard, as expected, taken first in the NHL draft by the Chicago Blackhawks The Chicago Blackhawks have selected Connor Bedard with the first pick in the NHL draft. The move should kick-start a hopeful new era for Chicago. Bedard is a highly skilled offensive forward who’s drawn comparisons to Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby. Bedard is the second No. 1 pick in Blackhawks history. Chicago took Patrick Kane first in 2007 and he helped form the core of a team that won three Stanley Cup championships. Anaheim selected Sweden forward Leo Carlsson second, followed Columbus picking Michigan freshman Adam Fantilli. The Blackhawks took center Oliver Moore with the 19th pick in a previous trade with Tampa Bay.  The Red Wings also had two first round selections. With the 9th pick, Detroit took, center Nate Danielson and with pick 17, Detroit grabbed Swedish defenseman, Axel Sandin Pellikka.  The draft continues today with rounds 2 through 7 starting at 11 a.m. NHL – Gary Bettman urges fans to boo him, honors David Poile to kick off NHL draft NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman brought one of the league's most beloved general managers with him to the stage to kick off the draft. That may have helped keep the usual booing of Bettman to a minimum. David Poile is the longest-tenured and winningest general manager in league history. Poile is retiring Friday after overseeing the startup of the Nashville Predators as an expansion franchise in 1997. Bettman then told fans they weren't booing him up to their usual standards. He urged them to do better and made sure to appreciate them as the boos grew louder. Josh Jung and Ezequiel Duran also each had solo home runs and RBI singles. With Dunning an out from a shutout, Andy Ibanez legged out an infield single, a call that stood following a Texas challenge, and Kerry Carpenter homered. White Sox 11, Angels 5 – Zavala homers twice, drives in 4 runs as the White Sox beat the Angels 11-5 Seby Zavala had his second two-homer game of the season and drove in four runs to help the Chicago White Sox break out of an offensive slump with an 11-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night. The White Sox scored in each of the first five innings to build a 9-2 lead. Chicago had 17 hits, including three apiece from Andrew Vaughn and Zach Remillard. Luis Robert Jr. and Eloy Jiménez also went deep. Lucas Giolito (6-5) struck out nine, going seven innings for the fourth time this season. Phillies 8, Cubs 5 – Castellanos, Sosa and Harrison go deep to help the Phillies beat Cubs 8-5   Nick Castellanos, Edmundo Sosa and Josh Harrison homered and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 8-5 on Wednesday night. The 30-year-old right-hander gave up a career-worst 10 runs, eight earned, in his previous start. Chicago's losing streak started against Los Angeles on June 9. The two teams play each other again on Friday. Marina Mabrey added 13 points and Dana Evans had 11 for Chicago (6-9). NFL – NFL finalizing discipline for several players linked to gambling violations Two people familiar with the plan say the NFL is finalizing disciplinary action against more players for gambling violations, including Indianapolis Colts defensive back Isaiah Rodgers Sr. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because an official announcement won't be made until later this week. Rodgers is the only identified player of the group, identifying himself in a Twitter post as the Colts player accused of gambling earlier this month. The identities of the other players are not yet known. A year-long suspension would be consistent with similar punishments handed down by the NFL. Golf – Thomas enters Rocket Mortgage Classic, hoping to boost postseason positioning Justin Thomas may have skipped the Rocket Mortgage Classic if this was just another usual year in his career. It hasn't been. The 2022 PGA Championship winner with 15 PGA Tour titles has fallen out of the top 10 in the world ranking for the first time in almost six years. NHL – Gary Bettman urges fans to boo him, honors David Poile to kick off NHL draft NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman brought one of the league’s most beloved general managers with him to the stage to kick off the draft. That may have helped keep the usual booing of Bettman to a minimum. David Poile is the longest-tenured and winningest general manager in league history. Poile is retiring Friday after overseeing the startup of the Nashville Predators as an expansion franchise in 1997. Bettman then told fans they weren’t booing him up to their usual standards. He urged them to do better and made sure to appreciate them as the boos grew louder. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Texas Rangers 10, Detroit Tigers 2 Chicago White Sox 11, Los Angeles Angels 5 Philadelphia Phillies 8, Chicago Cubs 5 Rangers 10, Tigers 2 – Dane Dunning comes within an out of his first shutout, the Rangers beat the Tigers 10-2 Dane Dunning threw shutout ball for a career-high 8 2/3 innings, Adolis Garcia homered for the third consecutive game and the Texas Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers 10-2 on Wednesday night. Josh Jung and Ezequiel Duran also each had solo home runs and RBI singles. Dunning (7-1) retired 17 straight batters between Zach McKinstry’s single to open the game and McKinstry’s two-out double in the sixth. Castellanos hit a three-run homer in the second off Drew Smyly after Sosa launched a two-run shot earlier in the inning. Castellanos also hustled out an RBI double and scored in a two-run fourth. Harrison added a solo homer in the fifth off Hayden Wesneski to make it 8-2, helping Philadelphia overcome a shaky start by Aaron Nola to win for the 17th time in 22 games. Germán has nine strikeouts and has thrown 82 pitches. Germán, a seven-year veteran, has never thrown a complete game. His longest outing was 8 1/3 innings against Cleveland on May 1, when he gave up two hits and one run. The 30-year-old right-hander gave up a career-worst 10 runs, eight earned, in his previous start. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Yesterday Chicago Sky 80, Los Angeles Sparks 63 Sky 80, Sparks 63 – Courtney Williams scores a season-high 21, Chicago snaps a 6-game losing streak Courtney Williams scored a season-high 21 points, Kahleah Copper added 14 points and the Chicago Sky beat the Los Angeles Sparks 80-63 to snap a six-game losing streak. Chicago’s losing streak started against Los Angeles on June 9. The two teams play each other again on Friday. Marina Mabrey added 13 points and Dana Evans had 11 for Chicago (6-9). Williams made three of Chicago’s nine 3-pointers and also grabbed nine rebounds. Williams scored 10 points in the first half to help Chicago build a 46-37 lead. Vucevic averaged 17.6 points and 11 rebounds while playing in all 82 games for the first time in his career. The 6-foot-10 center turns 33 in October. NFL – NFL finalizing discipline for several players linked to gambling violations Two people familiar with the plan say the NFL is finalizing disciplinary action against more players for gambling violations, including Indianapolis Colts defensive back Isaiah Rodgers Sr. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because an official announcement won’t be made until later this week. It hasn’t been. The 2022 PGA Championship winner with 15 PGA Tour titles has fallen out of the top 10 in the world ranking for the first time in almost six years. Suiting Up with Paul Rabil

10 years ago, Eric LeGrand was a top Division 1 football player at Rutgers University when he made a tackle that caused him to suffer a severe spinal cord injury, leaving him unable to move and breathe. He was paralyzed from the neck down and told he would never be able to come off a ventilator, much less walk again.  A month later he was off the ventilator, able to breathe on his own, and began physical therapy.  Eric's story is one that's gripping, motivational and aspiring. Over the last decade he's recognized his influence through sport to engage and educate audiences around the world on the preciousness of life, the value in opportunity to play sports, and how we can improve in our relationships between able-bodied and disabled people.  Think about the storied sentiment that able-bodied people share when facing adversity...that "it could be worse" often referencing people in wheelchairs or human sense impairing. These comparisons unintentionally denigrate a community of disabled people who actually get along quite well in society -- and in many cases, excel. Eric as evidence alongside 61 million adults in the US living with a disability. Eric does a wonderful job on the show coaching me on best practices, as well as sharing resources and ways that able-bodied individuals can work with and learn from disabled individuals. As compassionate of a storyteller and educator Eric is, he too remains motivated to work towards that first doctor's said 0% outcome of being able to walk again. When receiving the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the 20th Annual ESPYS, he closed his speech announcing that he in fact will walk again. A ferocious reader and author, Eric's written two books on leadership and overcoming adversity, dubbing one "The Tackle That Changed My Life." He's also a philanthropist and entrepreneur, recently launching his latest business, a coffee house that serves a "Daily Cup of Believe." You can order your coffee beans here: https://legrandcoffeehouse.com/ I'm excited for you to listen to my conversation with Eric LeGrand on Suiting Up Podcast, presented by Public.com and Outsystems.

ROB MENDEZ, the Jimmy V Award-winning football coach, joins JOY TAYLOR in studio to chop it about football and life. ROB is pulling for the 49ERS, learned a lot from TOM BRADY and thinks FREDDIE KITCHENS will get a job on an NFL staff this upcoming season. In WIT IT/QUIT IT producer JOHN HELLER finds out where JOY stands on MIKE MCCARTHY as the new co-leader of America’s Team and TOM BRADY’s possible swan song. In PETTY COURT you’ll find KIRK COUSINS. Do you like that? Either way, you are PETTY fr fr! HIGH KEY at least 75% of sports fans probably googled JOE JUDGE today after the GIANTS named him as their head coach, LOW KEY they probably wanted to hire MATT RHULE but the PANTHERS got him. HIGH KEY the BROWNS are still without coach, but LOW KEY they’re probably waiting on ROBERT SALEH, who has a chain wallet, figuratively speaking. The number one LOSER in the LOSER POWER RANKINGS is the notion of dynasties in sports. Man, it’s been a rough year for dynasties. The PATRIOTS didn’t win the SUPER BOWL, the WARRIORS whole team is injured, the SPURS are getting worse, GAME OF THRONES ended, etc. etc. Also, SEAN MCDERMOTT and all seventy-two DOLPHINS HATERS are in here, too. In the MIGOS CULTURE REPORT, T breaks down the COACHELLA lineup and shares her personal experience at BEYCHELLA. JOY and T also have some thoughts on ELTON JOHN, TOM HANKS and more from the GOLDEN GLOBES. Big shouts to AMANDA SEALES for joining the cast of THE REAL on a full-time basis. Stick around for JOY's full DIVISIONAL WEEKEND picks. Preciate y'all!

In this episode of Keep Moving Forward I interview 3x All-American wrestler, 2011 NCAA wrestling champion, member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, recipient of the 2011 Jimmy V Award for Perseverance, author, and motivational speaker, Anthony Robles.   If you guys are inspired by the stories that my interviewees and I share with you each week, please consider becoming a patron of my podcast. Of course, all episodes will still be free both on iTunes and at http://keepmovingforward.us/, however, if you would like to support the future success of this podcast, please consider becoming a patron at https://www.patreon.com/keepmovingforward.   “Focus on what you have, not what you don’t.” This is the mantra through which the unstoppable Anthony Robles lives his life. Even though he was born with only one leg, Anthony did not comprehend the idea of being limited. His family never let on that there was anything he could not do, so Anthony truly knew he was capable of absolutely anything that he set his mind to. At the age of 14, Anthony found that anything in wrestling. This sport opened up a number of doors for him, including one that landed him at Arizona State University where he brought home an NCAA title in 2011 for the Sun Devils. From there, Anthony saw the power in sharing his story with others so that they might benefit from the tale of his journey. With this in mind, he released his biography “Unstoppable” and set out to make a career in public speaking. Anthony has touched the lives of so many and continues to do so on a daily basis. In fact, the story of his life will even be coming to the big screen in the not too distant future so that his journey can impact that many more people. Anthony desires to change the lives of those who are touched by his story in a positive way, and it is clear that he will continue to do this for the rest of his life and after.   I had so much fun speaking with this incredibly motivating athlete and entrepreneur, and I hope that you are inspired by my discussion with the unstoppable Anthony Robles.   If you would like to learn more about Anthony, you can read his biography “Unstoppable”, you can visit http://anthonyrobles.com/, and follow him on Facebook and Twitter @ARobles125. It has been 6 years to the day since Eric LeGrand suffered a career-ending, and life-altering spinal cord injury while making a tackle on a kick-off late in the game against the Army Black Knights at Met Life stadium.  I was on the sideline that game working as a student manager for the Rutgers football team.  I had my eye off the field for a moment, but when I heard the impact and the roar from the crowd, I remember immediately turning around and seeing Eric on his back with his legs awkwardly raised in the air.  There was a feeling of eeriness like I had never seen before as an athlete or spectator.   First on the scene, Athletic Trainers, Mike Pawlusiak (left) and Dave McCune (right).  I can't stress the importance of Athletic Trainers enough!!! Eric's spirit was unmatched in the Rutgers football locker room.  His absence had a huge impact on his teammates as they lost all the remaining games left on the schedule.  One year after his injury, Eric lead the Scarlet Knights on to the field on a snowy October evening to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers. That moment is one that will impact the rest of my life and I reference it in ever talk I give about my own story of perseverance.  As he and his teammates made their way onto the field, Eric's signature ear-to-ear grin was captured in a picture, which was ultimately featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Body language is huge in the game of football.  I remember having to count how many times we had our heads down while breaking down game film from the night before.  Having your head down showed to the whole world that you had given up and that you were defeated.  The coaches at Rutgers preached similar things during practice and looking back, I couldn't agree more.  Below is a picture of me, post injury, at the coin toss of my team's last football game during my high school senior year (check out Episode 1 to hear my tale).  How would you describe my body language?  Personally, I see someone who looks like they are feeling bad for themselves, who has given up and who was defeated. West Morris Central vs. Warren Hills, November 9, 2007, 43-0 Wolfpack Looking back on the time between my injury and the night Eric returned to the field against West Virginia, I am embarrassed at how I acted.  Fortunately, Eric inspired me to do good with the gifts I was given, not sulk over the ones that were taken away from me. This podcast is my attempt to prevent other athletes from acting and feeling how did by sharing stories of perseverance like Eric's.  I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to interview Eric, and although I was planning on making this my 52nd episode, I felt that posting today was a more appropriate time.  Below are some talking points we cover: Playing sports growing up and staying injury free Concussions How to handle position changes The important role of special teams players  Leading up to his spinal cord injury Moments after his spinal cord injury Rehab/recovery Defying the odds Transition to life after football Cool experiences he has had since his injury Lessons learned from playing for coach Schiano The meaning behind his many tattoos and if he feels them while he gets inked Eric's thoughts on the kickoff in football Be on the lookout for Eric's new show on Fox, "Mission Possible," where he also shares stories of perseverance! As mentioned before, Eric and I suffered some of the most extreme injuries in sports.  However, neither of us regret playing and don't want our stories to take an opportunity to play away from another kid.  I hope this episode can add perspective and motivation to your life, it obviously did for me.  I also recommend reading Eric's book which takes you through his life as a young kid and through his recovery.  Reading it feels like you are sitting in a room talking to him.  It had me laughing the whole time.  Please show your support to Eric by making a donation at the link below.
