In the late nineties, John Lefebvre was approaching middle age and living out an unpromising legal career in Calgary, Canada. Then he jumped on board a dot-com start-up as a founder of Neteller. As companies fortunes rose along with those of the online gambling industry, the pay-off for Lefebvre and his partners would be astronomical. But it didn't come without a price. The firm's involvement in transactions serving the online gambling industry led to charges of money laundering, racketeering, running an unlicensed money transmitting business and promoting illegal gambling. Lefebvre was charged in connection with the creation and operation of an Internet payment services company that facilitated the transfer of billions of dollars of illegal gambling proceeds from U.S. citizens to the owners of overseas internet gambling companies. He pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to promote illegal internet gambling transactions and served 45 days in Federal Prison.Links: WebsiteFacebookSecond Chance Podcast Links:WebsiteBuzzsproutApple PodcastAudibleFacebookDonation Support:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/secondchance1Support the show

John Lefebvre has got boundless energy and freedom for changing the world. Two of his most defining moments came after he was arrested: the first time, he was 17 and sold some LSD to a couple of undercover police officers who looked like hippies. The second was when he was arrested in his mid-50s for conspiring to transfer funds with the intent to promote illegal gambling through a money transfer company he co-founded. Throughout his life, he has experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, and as both a lifelong environmentalist and someone who's experienced wealth like few others, he has a singular perspective on wealth redistribution, taking care of the earth we all live on, and how to leave a legacy for future generations. This is the conversation of a lifetime.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Generosity pays dividends, but you can't be attached to the outcome of what happens with that money.  If you are born into privilege, you didn't do anything to “earn it” and you have a responsibility to pay it forward, and to share so that others can actualize their full potential.  Kindness is priceless.  If you start each day with a “beginner's mindset” you are constantly surprised by what can happen in every day.  BEST MOMENTS  “We distinguish ourselves by the illusion that we're special. We become at fault when we forget that luck comes with a cost.” “That part of us that dreams at night doesn't go to sleep when we wake up.”  “We actually get more productive when our human resources are developed.”  “My responsibility was to learn how to be wealthy responsibly, and then teach others how to adopt that view.”  ABOUT THE GUEST  Raised as a (Catholic) altar boy in Calgary Alberta, by a single mom after his dad died when he was three, John has had a fascinating life. He's been a lawyer, a “recidivist husband”, a single father, a musician, an author, a multi-millionaire, a climate change activist, and a philanthropist. A little bit hippie, a lot salt-of-the-earth, John has a deeply philosophical, whimsical take on the world and humanity's purpose in it. His entire life has been shaped by the idea that simply by being born in Canada, he's had immense privilege. He believes he has a sense of responsibility to share his advantages and wealth with others to make the world a better place.  CONTACT METHOD John's website: https://www.johnlefebvre.com/ ABOUT THE HOST  The ‘Mighty Pete Lonton' from the ‘Mighty 247' company is your main host of ‘Fire in The Belly'.  Pete is an entrepreneur, mentor, coach, property Investor, and father of three beautiful girls. In this episode of Shift - Getting out of your comfort zone! - I sit down with John Lefebvre - musician | composer | author| entrepreneur | philanthropist - to discuss his very dynamic and intense journey through career and life; his story of the many ups and downs of life and how he ultimately overcame them and now serving the society for a better future ahead. About John: he's been a choir boy and a lawyer, a construction labourer and house designer, a recidivist husband and a single time father. But it was another state in life that brought him notoriety – and wealth – a prisoner. At 17 in 1969, I was arrested for selling hash and LSD to cops dressed up like hippies. And forty years later, he was arrested again for co-founding and operating a business that, the year he was arrested, was tracking to transfer over $14billion dollars, mostly American, between online gamblers and internet bookies and casinos. For the first notorious experience, he was immersed in a world-changing culture, on the cusp between respecting all authority, all elders on the one hand, and only respecting who we thought deserved it on the other, between taking things for granted and finding out for oneself. John co-founded the DeSmog group of blogs, “Cleaning up the PR pollution that clouds climate science.” He remains a committee member of the David Suzuki Foundation and a founding director of the David Suzuki Institute. He was the founding funder of the Dalai Lama centre for Peace And Education in Vancouver. And decided to devote the remainder of his time here on Earth to encouraging environmental awareness, consciousness generally, and to the appreciation of the boundless miracle that has befallen all of us humans but, that toward which, so few of us barely even glance while immersed in our “world” of acquisition for the main purpose of self-indulgent leisure. How would your life change if you suddenly had all the money in the world? This was the experience of John Lefebvre, who was catapulted from an ordinary existence as a lawyer and musician into a life of untold wealth during the dotcom boom of the 2000s.  John's life of luxury came to an abrupt halt in 2007, however, after the FBI stormed his home and arrested him for money laundering, racketeering and conspiracy. John pled guilty, paid a fine of $40 million, and served 45 days in a Manhattan jail.  Over the last two decades John has given away well over $50 million. He says that money is like dope – it takes more and more to achieve the same rush, until you just can't get high on it anymore. He became convinced that eventually the only rush that remained was sharing wealth with others and experiencing their joy at being set free from cares and concerns. John has since found meaning in music, writing (he is the author of two books), spiritual exploration and climate activism.  He has worked closely with David Suzuki and supports Vancouver's Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education. John maintains that the earthly existence that has miraculously befallen each of us is actually the complete answer to anybody's wildest dreams, and that we must start taking basic care of everyone on Earth.   Follow Up Join our Supporters Club to access exclusive behind-the-scenes content, fan requests and the chance to ask Andrew your own questions. John Lefebvre is a retired lawyer, an author, a musician, an environmental and social activist, and a philanthropist. He made it big in the dot-com era, only to find himself arrested and charged with various illegal activities stemming from that business. He's now got a lot of time to think about the responsibility of the people in the world who are privileged to ensure that those same privileges are available to the rest of the Earth's population. He believes that we should strive every day to ensure we move toward the day when everyone can enjoy what we (as the privileged) take for granted. In terms of preparing for and living BEYOND retirement, his wise advice is to ensure we find time for leisure. It's important to establish "office hours" for the things going on in our heads and in the world around us, to ensure that they don't overwhelm us. He has given away over $50 million dollars to date! Topics covered include the tenants of a constitutional democracy, and the role of government and society to preserve the lives of its populous. Imposing taxes on the “selfish wealthy” and regulations on the corporations are put forth as solutions to social challenges that should be embraced to ensure the health of our people and planet so that together, we can all thrive. “No one owns the water. No one owns the land. No one owns the oceans. No one owns the sand. These are given by our Mother. The Planet provides for free. Only by the hands of the greedy does the Earth require a fee.” - Unknown There is a truth that we must realize, each of us has a responsibility to make the world a better place, and we need accountability so we can turn things around. This episode features guest John Lefebvre, who has recorded albums with grammy-winning producers, spent time in prison, and has given away over $50 million dollars to charity. In this episode, we discuss: That no matter what your belief structure is, Mother Earth needs to be taken care of If we paid more attention to the way that older civilizations lived in harmony with all things, this world could become a better place (faster!) There are the “selfish wealthy” and then there are others who understand how to give back  It's time to change humanity's ethos from “grabby” to that of “sharing”  Sharing can change people's lives and make the whole fake scarcity game go away for good With much more … take a listen or watch the video version of this episode. In this episode Caleb has a fascinating conversation with John Lefebvre. John is a musician, composer, entrepreneur, retired lawyer, philanthropist, climate change activist, and author of the books, "All's Well: Where Thou Art Earth & Why" and "Good with Money: A Rich Guy's Guide to Gaining Everything by Losing it All". John grew up in the world-changing culture of the 60's. Forty years later he was a 1/4 owner in a company worth more than $2 billion dollars with 100's of millions in the bank, two homes in Malibu and a private jet. In 2007 he went to federal prison for charges of conspiracy to promote illegal internet gambling. That experience and his passion searching for greater meaning in life led him to philanthropy and activism to improve the lives of others. As John says, "The only thrill that remained was sharing the thrill with others." John believes generosity is a duty, especially for the wealthy...and the dividends of generosity is gratitude. John is definitely one of the "most interesting men in the world". This conversation is uplifting, thought-provoking, and inspiring! John Lefebvre is a Canadian musician, composer, entrepreneur, retired lawyer and philanthropist. An emerging rock artist that didn't write his first song until he was 45, and didn't record his first album until he was 56. A busker during his roustabout youth in Calgary, he was a lawyer during what he calls his "wasted" adult years, when his musical interests had to take a back seat to supporting his family. He is currently active as an author and activist on climate change issues. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
