Today we're going to talk about      John Lennon and Bill Maher      and where they all got the “God-thing” all wrong.   My goal today is not to convince you or them      that God does exist,      but to convince you that you WANT God to exist.   There are THREE reasons      why I believe Bill Maher WANTS God to exist. He just doesn't know it      —yet.   And by “God,” I don't mean some fairytale God      you make up in order to make yourself feel better.   I mean the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. I mean the God who said, “Love your neighbor.” I mean the God who died on a cross      and came back to life again to prove his deity. I mean the God of the Bible     that Speaker Johnson referred to.   THE FIRST REASON YOU WANT GOD TO EXIST IS BECAUSE HIS FOLLOWERS HAVE CHANGED YOUR LIFE FOR THE BETTER.     Now that the Beatles are back in the news with their latest release, “Now and Then,” I want to start by quoting John Lennon from his song, “IMAGINE,” the one we hear every New Year's Eve.   Then I want to ask YOU to imagine   what life would really look like if John Lennon got his wish.   IMAGINE, by John Lennon   “Imagine there's no heaven. It's easy if you try. No hell below us, Above us, only sky   “Imagine no religion.”     Let's imagine for the next few minutes there is no heaven, no hell, no religion, and by implication, no God, No CHRISTIANS.   What would that look like?   The Second Reason You Want God to Exist is because if He doesn't then SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST is the only remaining Basis for Morality.   How do you get from “Survival of the Fittest”      to “Love your neighbor?” How do you get from “Survival of the Fittest”     (where the fit survive and the weak die)      to “Be Kind?”   If Survival of the Fittest is the basis of morality,      then Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, Hitler      and even the Inquisition did nothing wrong. In fact, they advanced the Evolutionary struggle,      and therefore what they did was Good.   The Third Reason You Want God to Exist is because if He doesn't then MORALITY IS A FAIRTYTALE just like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny   If God does not exist,      there is NO RATIONAL SOURCE      for MORAL OBLIGATION Sure, you can make up a system of morality that works for you.   The problem is,      why am I REQUIRED to embrace YOUR morality?   What in the universe OBLIGATES me      to abide by a system      that you and your friends make up?   So to John Lennon and Bill Maher let me say:   You want God to exist because his followers      have changed your life for the better.   You want God to exist because if He doesn't      “Survival of the Fittest” is the only remaining basis      for morality.   You want God to exist because if He doesn't morality is a fairytale, just like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny.     God IS the issue in every issue—especially morality.     This is Brad Bright and the God is the Issue Podcast.   If you found this podcast helpful, don't forget to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE

In this weeks episode of THE LIKES OF US podcast, dedicated to Working-Class Life, Art, Politics and Culture, your host, Neil Bradley takes a trip to the Big Apple for the Great New York Adventure, with visits to all the places he wanted to visit on a previous trip to the city (some 30-odd years ago), but was far too scared to do so!  During his trip he visits the former home of David Bowie, takes a walk through 1960s Greenwich Village, takes in the 9/11 Memorial in Downtown and the John Lennon Imagine memorial in Central Park, takes in some crap art at the Guggenheim, and recreates various film scenes from Taxi Driver, Carlito's Way and Marathon Man - Is it Safe?

It's not the usual venue for it — that would be a coffee place on Emek Refaim Street in Jerusalem, but I spent about an hour talking with my friend and teacher, Gil Troy. Gil is the author and editor of nine books, including several books on Israel and Zionism — and most recently and most impressively, “Theodor Herzl,” a collection of Theodor Herzl's writings in a beautiful three volume set published by Koren, as part of its imprint, the Library of the Jewish People. We also talked about great American presidents (who would you like to have lunch with?), and our mutual American diplomatic heroes, and about what it means to support Israel, even in its most difficult times. When I think of Zionism, I focus on one of my own heroes — a man whose yahrzeit, the anniversary of his death, was just last week — the great Israeli writer and thinker, Amos Oz. Four years gone, and four years mourned. Amos Oz was quite aware there were many people who did not believe there should be a Jewish state, because they simply do not believe in nation-states. This is what I would call the John Lennon “Imagine” argument: ”Imagine there's no countries; it's easy if you try.” This is how Amos Oz responded to that argument: I would be more than happy to live in a world composed of dozens of civilizations, each developing in accordance with its own internal rhythm, all cross-pollinating one another, without any one emerging as a nation-state: no flag, no emblem, no passport, no anthem. No nothing. Only spiritual civilizations tied somehow to their lands, without the tools of statehood and without the instruments of war. But the Jewish people has already staged a long-running one-man show of that sort. The international audience sometimes applauded, sometimes threw stones, and occasionally slaughtered the actor. No one joined us; no one copied the model the Jews were forced to sustain for two thousand years, the model of a civilization without the “tools of statehood.” For me this drama ended with the murder of Europe's Jews by Hitler. In other words: It would be lovely if there were no nations, and we could all dwell together in the imaginary world of “kumbaya.” But, if a nation wants to divest itself of the trappings of its nationhood, let it go first. France, Germany, Italy… “After you,” Oz is saying. Don't expect the Jews to be the first to divest itself of its national and particular identity, and don't expect the Jews to be the only “universal” people in the world. Especially since universal identities do not exist. Until there is a universal, human identity –—which is to say, until the coming of the great messianic age — I will maintain my allegiance to this people, to this land and to this God.

À l'occasion de la sortie de l'albumSuba (Ota Rd),nous recevons le pianiste cubain Omar Sosa et le korafola sénégalais Seckou Keïta. SUBA, le deuxième album du pianiste virtuose cubain, Omar Sosa, et du maître de la kora sénégalaise Seckou Keïta, fait suite au premier disque du duo, Transparent Water (2017), acclamé par la critique. Écrit et enregistré en 2020 pendant le confinement mondial, SUBA ("l'aube" en malinké) est un hymne à l'espoir dans un monde post-pandémique. L'océan Atlantique sépare Cuba du Sénégal, les lieux de naissance respectifs d'Omar Sosa et de Seckou Keïta, une distance amenuisée par leur lien ancestral commun avec l'Afrique. Lorsque les deux hommes se sont rencontrés pour la première fois en 2012, Seckou aimait Omar pour sa spiritualité musicale, tandis qu'Omar voyait en Seckou une capacité rare à collaborer sans perdre son identité. Deux principes fondamentaux ont guidé la conception de l'album : l'approche less is more ou minimalismo, comme Omar aime l'appeler, et l'importance de la collaboration. Les deux artistes travaillent dans l'écoute et le respect des idées partagées. Pour eux : le seul patron est la musique. Les onze titres qui composent SUBA sont liés par des thèmes communs, tissés tout au long de l'enregistrement. Les chansons parlent d'amitié et de connexion spirituelle, de voyage et de perte, d'espoir et d'optimisme, de danse et de mer… et, bien sûr, d'un nouveau lever de soleil. El multiinstrumentista Luís Peixoto acaba de publicar “Geodesia”, su nuevo trabajo discográfico centrado principalmente en la mandolina y con una sonoridad acústica. Luís Peixoto es uno de los músicos de cuerda portugueses más consolidados. Tras formar parte y acompañar a innumerables grupos y artistas, como Dazkarieh, Sebastião Antunes, Júlio Pereira o Ana Bacalhau, en 2017 lanzó su disco en solitario “Assimétrico”, el trabajo que más reconocimiento ha recibido.Entre recreaciones de temas tradicionales y composiciones originales, “Geodesia” es un fascinante viaje sonoro que confirma a Luís Peixoto como uno de los multiinstrumentistas portugueses más creativos y virtuosos. "Ilanga" (The Sun) es el quinto álbum del magnífico conjunto femenino a capella Afrika Mamas, de Sudáfrica. Su estilo incorpora isicathamiya, que combina el canto a capella tradicional zulú y el gospel cristiano. Normalmente es realizado por hombres y fue popularizado en todo el mundo por Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Ilanga - The Sun fue coproducida por Xolani Majozi (Ladysmith Black Mambazo) y cuenta con una poderosa y cautivadora voz principal y coros de llamada y respuesta. La letra aborda temas de amor, derechos de la mujer y respeto por el mundo y su gente. El álbum también incluye una versión sudafricana de la icónica canción de John Lennon "Imagine". Varias de las canciones fueron escritas por los hijos del fallecido Joseph Shabalala, el fundador de Ladysmith Black Mambazo. El actual líder de la banda es Ntombifuthi Lushaba . Longtemps frustré de ne pas pouvoir proposer plus de chansons au sein des Beatles, dominé par le tandem Lennon/McCartney, George Harrison se rattrape avec un triple album qui sort le 30 novembre 1970. Produit par Phil Spector, Harrison s'entoure de ses amis Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Klaus Voormann, Billy Preston, ainsi que plusieurs des musiciens de Derek and the Dominos qui accompagnèrent Clapton sur l'album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. All Things Must Pass est aujourd'hui considéré comme le meilleur album solo de la carrière de Georges Harrison, avec des classiques comme My Sweet Lord, Wah-Wah, ou Isn't It A Pity 50 ans après, voici ce chef d'œuvre enfin réédité avec 43 demos et outtakes inédits, remixés par Paul Hicks auquel nous devons les dernières rééditions des albums de John Lennon (Imagine, Plastic Ono Band). Ces nouveaux mixes révèlent une profondeur sonore, une définition et une clarté à couper le souffle.   Marc Melià ("Les Étoiles" Feat. Flavien Berger & PiJaMa / Cd Veus (Pan European Recording 2021) Originaire de l'île de Majorque, Marc Melià est un compositeur/producteur basé à Bruxelles depuis plus de 10 ans. Repéré aux côtés de Françoiz Breut, Lonely Drifter Karen ou Borja Flames, en 2017 il sort Music For Prophet, son premier album solo  sur le label de Gaspar Claus Les Disques du Festival Permanent au sein de la sélection de Flavien Berger.  Si pour ce premier album, Marc Melià avait exploré les possibilités offertes par un synthétiseur mythique, pour Veus, et à la manière d'une mue, il applique le processus de modification du son à sa propre voix jusqu'à se faire androïde. Un androïde qui parle toutefois d'amour et de rêveries, un automate sensible qui joue avec les canons de la musique pop. Assumant l'artifice, Marc Melià recherche la poésie et la beauté dans le transgénique pour trouver un univers dans lequel on peut surfer à travers des vagues d'accords profondément émouvants, entendre des voix sans limite de registre ou danser librement comme en apesanteur. Une partie du disque a été enregistrée au cœur d'"Une ferme dans les Vosges" appartenant à Rodolphe Burger (Bio Murailles Music).   Joy Denalane "The Ride" / Cd Let Yourself Be Loved (℗ 2020 Lesedi Music / Joy Denalane) Chanteuse allemande neo-soul, Joy Denalane est héritière de Lauryn Hill et Jill Scott.   Bonbon Vodou "Fonker" Feat. Danyel Waro et Piers Faccini Cd Cimetière Créole (Heavenly Sweetness 2021) voir le clip  La promesse des délices du sucre et la crainte du piment occulte. Le contraste est prononcé, à l'image du Bonbon Vodou... Le Bonbon Vodou, c'est Oriane Lacaille et JereM, deux parfums qui se complètent pour n'en faire qu'un. Elle est issue d'une famille de musiciens Réunionnais, il est fils de… psychiatres Lacaniens. De la France au Canada, en passant par la Réunion, le duo a donné plus de 150 concerts en trois ans. Des histoires à deux voix, qui combinent, pétillent et explosent. Des poèmes, du sarcasme. Une nostalgie joyeuse et festive, à l'image du cimetière marin de la baie de Saint-Paul, île de La Réunion. Les carrés de terre couverts de fleurs multicolores y ont remplacé les stèles de pierre. Supposé sombre, le lieu fourmille de vie prête à renaître encore et toujours. Une façon de célébrer la fin comme un début, de rire dans la tristesse. Croqué jusqu'en son centre, c'est là que mène le Bonbon Vodou. Dans ce champ du repos éternel, point de départ de ce deuxième album. Sur place, c'est entouré de figures musicales de l'île que le duo s'est offert des subtilités gustatives du sega et du mayola. Les notes d'accordéon de René Lacaille, le père d'Oriane, la voix de Danyèl Waro. Mais aussi des percussions - le kayamb évidemment ! - et, dans la tradition locale, le souffle des orchestres en cuivres. Piers Faccini à la réalisation de plusieurs titres, c'est à Jean Lamoot (Noir Désir, Bashung Salif Keita…) qu'est revenu le travail décisif de l'enregistrement et du mix qui donne au Bonbon Vodou sa saveur définitive, sa douceur et son acidité. Dans ce Cimetière Créole, Bonbon Vodou invoque les divinités occultes, danse avec elles, voyage, célèbre la vie et le moment présent, gorgé du sucre qui adoucit les moments les plus amers. Car, même avec un pied dans la tombe, on peut danser de l'autre.   Emily Loizeau  "Celle qui vit vers le sud" Cd Icare (Les Éditions de la Dernière Pluie 2021) Emily Loizeau nous revient avec un disque écrit au cœur du confinement, enregistré en quarantaine en Angleterre avec le réalisateur et musicien John Parish (musicien et producteur de PJ Harvey). Emily nourrissait depuis longtemps l'envie de cette rencontre et d'un album dans son pays de moitié, jusqu'à ce que l'évidence opère. Elle est ici autrice, compositrice et interprète mais aussi productrice désormais de son travail. Obi "No One" Cd No One (2021 Horizon) voir le clip  Onipa "Play It" Ft. Þórdís er ein af sex úr hópnum sem stefnir á að hlaupa 100 kílómetra og slá þar með met sitt sem er 88 kílómetrar. Andapollurinn á Akureyri stækkaði svo um munaði í fyrradag þegar unnið var að hreinsun hans og vatnið flæddi upp um holræsi á mótum Drottningarbrautar og Kaupvangsstrætis og allt fór á kaf. Börkur Ragnarsson starfsmaður umhverfismiðstöðvar Akureyrarbæjar tókst á við vandamálið og heyrðum í honum og spurðum hvað gerðist. Orf líftækni er íslenskt fyrirtæki sem náð hefur athyglisverðum árangri í framleiðslu og sölu snyrtivara. Vörur þeirra, undir vörumerkinu Bioeffect, má finna í mörgum fínustu verslunum heims, en vörurnar eru þróaðar og framleiddar í risavöxnu gróðurhúsi við Grindavík þar sem líftæknin leikur lykilhlutverk.
