Many are the paradoxes of the Christian life. One such paradox is that it is often in times of suffering that we gain the most, from a spiritual standpoint. As we stand at the gate of the year, we must prepare ourselves for suffering. We have been told to expect it as a built-in feature of the heavenward life. Such preparation is an exercise of faith, as we trust that God is able to turn the worst circumstances to our good. This week's articles help us in this effort.   Featured Content: – Excerpt from a sermon by William Bridge, featured as 'Faith in Suffering Times' in the Banner of Truth Magazine, Issues 70–71 (July–August 1969). – 'Abounding Hope', Letter by John Welsh, January 6, 1606, featured in the Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 171 (December 1977).   Explore the work of the Banner of Truth: www.banneroftruth.org Subscribe to the Magazine (print/digital/both): www.banneroftruth.org/magazine Leave us a voice message: www.speakpipe.com/magazinepodcast

It would be great if all our podcast friends and guests lived on the same street in the same town. However, when they don't, you need technology to be your friend, and so far it has played a blinder. The panel this week was all about quality over quantity. In addition to John Welsh, our guest was Ian Smith, who has been working wonders at our favourite record label, Last Night From Glasgow for a number of years. We reviewed 5 more albums on this episode from Jimi Hendrix ( 3rd album on list) The Beatles ( 2nd album on list, with more to come!) D'Angelo Wu Tang Clan Patti Smith Three of these were voted in, but only after plenty of chat, opinion, some disagreement and a few laughs along the way. ( and a fair bit of musical knowledge!) As we do with every guest, Ian also got to nominate an album that he thinks deserves a place on the 100 list - and It's an absolute belter. That's 15 Episodes completed - and we have 48 albums now on the ' final' 100 list. Enjoy, and stay safe PS. The technology did get its own back a little on this episode - big thanks to John & Ian for sticking with it to the end (class is permanent)

John Welsch is a staple diet in the Colorado Soccer community. A man of integrity, a copious amount of intelligence and is very much soccer and life savvy. When John holds court it's a good idea to listen. Watch. Listen and learn. Richie English.INSTAGRAM… johnwelschcoachingTWITTER…. @JohnWelschCoachingWEBSITE… www.johnwelschcoaching.comMeet Coach JohnBorn and raised in the Netherlands, John Welsch arrived in the United States at age 18 to study and play soccer at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas. John was a two-time All-American and a four-time All-Midwest player at NTSU, in those days a perennial power-house in college soccer. After being selected to play in the 1980 College Senior Bowl, he was then drafted by the Chicago Sting of the North American Soccer League and played in Chicago during the 1980-81 indoor season before returning to the Dallas area to play for the Dallas Americans of the American Soccer League until 1984.Following his professional soccer career, John was hired as the first head coach for FC Boulder in 1989. With the help of some amazing coaches and staff members, he transformed FC Boulder into one of the top clubs in Colorado. His 28 years with FC Boulder made him the longest running Director of Coaching in Colorado and under his guidance, Boulder has become a hotbed for soccer. As of 2021, John has coached more players who have succeeded at the high school varsity level than any other coach in the North Metro/Boulder County area. Over 200 of John's former players have gone on to play collegiate soccer including NSCAA All-Americans, NCAA National Champions and All-Conference players. John has coached players that have gone on to play professional soccer as well as players who have gone on to coach at the professional, collegiate and high school levels.Besides coaching at the club level, John served as head coach for Boulder High School in the 1990s, assistant coach for the University of Colorado Women's team and a Colorado Olympic Development Program staff coach. As the first USSF "A" licensed coach in the area, John has conducted coaching certification courses for many Colorado youth coaches. He currently organizes the annual Colorado Soccer Coaching Symposium, bringing some of the top coaches in the United States to Boulder each winter.John departed FC Boulder for Boulder County Soccer Club in 2017, seeking to help build an alternative to what he saw as an increasingly “big business” approach to youth soccer. During his four years at BCSC, the club made great strides, culminating in the Fairview boys high school team winning the Colorado 5A state championship, with 8-of-the-11 starters coming from the BCSC program.John believes that mindful coaching, inclusive programming and a commitment to excellence is the pathway to success in soccer and that quality soccer experiences should be available to players and families of all backgrounds.

Red panelist Phil sits down with former Liverpool man John Welsh (over Zoom) to discuss John's career, focusing mainly on his time at his boyhood club Liverpool FC. Obsessed with football from an early age John was picked up by Liverpool at 8 years old and if not for the intervention of a scout and good friend, John's dream was nearly cut short before it began. A powerhouse of a midfielder, strong in the tackle and classy on the ball, John soon rose through the ranks, always playing a couple of age groups above. During this fascinating interview John details some of the key moments at the club including captaining the reserves, debuts for the first team, Champions League appearances and his eventual decision to leave under a bit of a cloud, after some cold treatment from Rafa Benitez. John gives great insight into what was happening at the club in what was a pretty successful era and tells us just how good the likes of Steven Gerrard, Alonso, Torres and others were, with some hilarious anecdotes from training ground. Moving on from Liverpool John briefly touches on his successful stints at Hull, Tranmere and Preston, before outlining some of his hopes and plans for the future.

Synopsis Today’s date marks two anniversaries in the life of American composer, teacher, and organist Leo Sowerby, who lived from 1895 to 1968. Sowerby was born on May 1st in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and on his 32nd birthday in 1927, was hired as the permanent organist and choirmaster at St. James’ Church in Chicago, where he remained for the next 35 years. Sowerby wrote hundreds of pieces of church music for organ and chorus, plus chamber and symphonic works, which are only recently receiving proper attention. It’s not that Sowerby was neglected during his lifetime–he won many awards, including a Pulitzer Prize in 1946–but many seemed “put off” by both his unabashedly Romantic style and his unprepossessing physical appearance. The younger American composer Ned Rorem, who took theory lessons from Sowerby, puts it this way: “Leo Sowerby was … of my parents’ generation, a bachelor, reddish-complexioned and milky skinned, chain smoker of Fatima cigarettes, unglamorous and non-mysterious, likable with a perpetual worried frown, overweight and wearing rimless glasses, earthy, practical, interested in others even when they were talentless; a stickler for basic training, Sowerby was the first composer I knew and the last thing a composer was supposed to resemble.” Music Played in Today's Program Leo Sowerby (1895 – 1968) Classic Concerto David Mulbury, organ; Fairfield Orchestra; John Welsh, cond. If 50 soldiers were sent into town to arrest you, would you be bold enough to invite them into your church so you could preach the Gospel to them?  That's what John Blackadder did. After being expelled from his pulpit for refusing to comply with the government imposition of the Episcopacy, he turned to preaching in the fields and a life on the run from the authorities.  Matthew Vogan explains more from North Berwick. To dig deeper, visit www.scotlandsforgottenhistory.com TRANSCRIPT   Welcome to Scotland's Forgotten History. On this episode we are in the seaside town of North Berwick. We’re at the ruins of the Old St Andrew’s Church with the churchyard.  One interesting tombstone marks the burial place of John Blackadder, one of the most prominent field preachers during the times of persecution.   He was resolute from the start. He refused to take part in the anniversary celebrations of the Restoration of Charles II in Dumfries. Fifty soldiers were sent to the town. Blackadder insisted on preaching and also on the soldiers coming in to listen. He spent time exposing the way that biblical principles in the Church were being overturned by the Restoration. He was arrested the next day and imprisoned in Edinburgh but later released.   Blackadder continued to preach after being forced out of his parish near Dumfries by the government. The very next Lord’s Day after preaching his farewell sermon in the church he preached in his own house to a full congregation.  It was not long before the authorities were alerted to this and ultimately Blackadder had to take his preaching into the fields.   He preached at some of the conventicles where there was greatest attendance including various communion occasions. John Welsh of Irongray was a frequent companion. Together they helped to organize the underground Church so as to be able to ensure preachers for the future.   Blackadder’s preaching was greatly blessed. Blackadder himself wrote in 1679 that “there are more converts in Scotland than ever”. This was despite the deepening suffering. The Borders especially witnessed the powerful blessing of God on this preaching in the fields.   Alexander Shields said:  “I doubt if ever there was greater days of the Son of man upon the earth, since the apostolic times”. “The word of God grew exceedingly and went through at least the southern borders of the kingdom like lightning or like the sun in its meridian beauty; discovering the wonders of God’s law, the mysteries of his gospel, and the secrets of his covenant, and the sins and duties of that day, that a numerous issue was begotten to Christ, and his conquest was glorious, captivating poor slaves of Satan, and bringing them from his power unto God, and from darkness to light, wherein many were truly converted, more convinced, and generally all reformed from their former immoralities: that even robbers, thieves, and profane men, were some of them brought to a saving subjection to Christ”.   Blackadder had moved his family to Edinburgh where (ironically) it was easier to be concealed. But in 1681 he was arrested at his Edinburgh home and sentenced to be imprisoned on the Bass Rock. He spent five years on this desolate sea-beat prison and his health suffered drastically. One of the rooms in the Bass castle known as Blackadder’s Lodging can still be seen. His second request for being moved from the rock was granted but he died there at the age of 69 before he could leave.   And that is why his remains were buried here in the churchyard at North Berwick. The preacher John Rae who also perished on the Rock was buried here likewise. The inscription on Blackadder’s tombstone is both interesting and moving. It makes the connection between John Blackadder and John the Apostle and the Isle of Patmos and the Isle of the Bass. His body suffer’d but no chains could bind His heaven-aspiring soul

This weeks guest is a little different to many of the guests I’ve had on in the past. Instead of giving very little weight to fundamentals and news releases, these two things actually form the foundation for his trading approach. In fact, he almost disregards charts altogether, and he relates the reason for this to his background in accounting and finance. John Welsh has been a full time trader for over 10 years and he’s racked up millions of dollars in profits along the way. His trading consists of both intraday and swing trading, and he concentrates mainly on Biotech stocks, making roughly 90% of his trades within this sector. Now that I’ve given you the 1,000 ft view on John’s trading journey, here he is to fill in the blanks, and give us a lot more depth around his approach.
