Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, recently expressed his strong dissent towards the contemporary idea of 'squatters' rights' in a late-week interview, with no clandestine implications, but a clear divergence from his party's standard perspective. Fetterman critically questioned the idea of assigning rights to squatters during his discussion with Jon Levine from the New York Post. In his words, 'Squatters have no rights,' going on to fundamentally ask, 'How can you possibly argue that this is anything but an outright legal violation?' He was keen on making it clear that he does not adhere to the growing 'woke' culture within his political space. Further expressing his standpoint, Fetterman emphasized, 'I am not woke,' delineating a commitment to a more practical course, even if that meant steering against the typical currents of his party. Consequently, he bore testament to a history of rebuffing such movements, tracing back to his mayoral tenure in the quaint Pennsylvanian town of Braddock. His statements unveiled a transparent yet distinct principle, indeed out of sync with prevailing liberal views, but a sincere token of his political perspective. The basis of Fetterman's argument was propelled by the hypothetical scenario he proposed, about a property owner going away for a month-long trip. He took an issue with the paradoxical scenario that if an unknown person broke into the house during this time, they could potentially assert some form of rights to the property. In his view, this level of absurdity was tantamount to a situation where a person's car gets stolen, only for the thief to accrue some entitlements after keeping the car for a month. He reflected on his own disbelief, empathizing with those who might find such incidences incredulous. To him, the instance was not just a mere lack of sense, but also a highly disconcerting factor. He exemplified this by reiterating, 'This is crazy,' equally perplexed and disappointed by the prevailing loopholes being misused. Fetterman went further to criticize the Democratic party's policies, which he perceives as lenient towards criminal activities. His objection was not aimed at causing unrest within party lines, but instead, he echoed a sentiment that may resonate with many. He targeted a significant aspect of crime management, where his party's leniency was linked to unnecessary and tragic incidents such as the death of NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller. The fallout of such a policy, Fetterman argued, resulted in a devastating tragedy that unfolded in late March in Queens. Detective Jonathan Diller, a devoted husband, father, and an asset to the law enforcement with three years of committed service on the force, met an untimely demise during a routine traffic stop. While undertaking normal policing duties, Detective Diller was fired upon by the passenger of a pulled-over car, leading to grievous injuries. Fetterman connected this heartbreaking incident directly to the consequences of soft-on-crime policies, stressing on the need for reforms in this arena. The alleged shooter was identified as 34-year-old Guy Rivera, who was seated in the passenger section of the car when the fatal incident unfolded. Rivera didn't have a crime-free past, boasting 21 previous encounters with the law. This tragic event reignited the discourse on crime policies, as Rivera was just released from prison the previous year. Rivera's crime history is well-recorded, with former sentence for criminal possession of a controlled substance that resulted in him serving a five-year term until his release in 2021. He also served prison time from 2011 to 2014 for a first-degree assault charge. Fetterman used Rivera's extensive crime history as a case to critique the current crime policy. Fetterman's stance resonated with those pushing for stricter punishments for heinous crimes. Referring to Detective Diller's alleged killer, Fetterman believed that if convicted, the convict 'should spend the rest of his life and in prison, and never have an opportunity to get out.' His idea goes beyond simple punitive measures, hinting towards rehabilitation through indefinite confinement. Overall, Senator John Fetterman's recent candid interview has triggered significant food for thought among a variety of demographics. His clear stance against squatter's rights and a refreshing deviance from party rhetoric on crime policies underlines the nuances within the broader Democratic party. Indeed, Fetterman's views may not echo across the entire party. However, it provides valuable insights into the spectrum of opinions within any political organization, revealing the existence of different shades of a perceived color. Brexit his conservative-leaning stance with a gentle edge, Fetterman's perspectives put forth an intriguing blend of voices within the Democratic party. From the deconstruction of ‘squatter's rights,' to the endorsement for harsher crime penalities, Fetterman juxtaposes an alternative vision within his Democrat identity. It's an account that neither completely disowns party perspectives, nor complies fully with them, but one that hints at the importance of constructive criticism and diverse discourses in furthering effective legal reforms. “Nancy Pelosi meets Pope Francis at Vatican amid controversy,” by Jon Levine and Mary Kay Linge, The New York Post, October 9, 2021 Washington in the Lap of Rome by Justin D. Fulton, 1888. “Pelosi Statement on Audience His Holiness Pope Francis,” October 9, 2021
Alessia Cara uses pop music as a diary. Over the last five years, she has matured alongside her audience, first capturing the highs and lows of adolescence with camera-like clarity, and then documenting her first, tentative steps into adulthood on deeply resonant songs like “Trust My Lonely” and “Out Of Love.” Now, she looks inward—again—on album number three. In the Meantime reflects on a period of intense self-doubt and traces the Grammy winner's slow journey back to happiness. “There's a sense of duality to this entire project, that's the common thread,” Cara reveals. “It's introspection and despair, followed by the first inkling of hope.” The 24-year-old teases both ends of that spectrum on the album's first two singles. “Shape Shifter,” a feisty, mid-tempo bop, represents the dark, while the instantly catchy “Sweet Dream” symbolizes the light. The former was recorded in producer Salaam Remi's home studio—a holy place of sorts for Cara. “I was super nervous because that was where Amy Winehouse wrote all her music,” she says, still in awe. “I remember thinking, ‘Amy if you're out there, please don't let me look dumb!” A sweeping kiss-off that oozes attitude and swagger, “Shape Shifter” has all the elements of a summer smash. “I felt a little mistreated by somebody and a little wronged,” Cara admits. “I was in a period of my life where I was just mad at the world.” She channeled those feelings into a fictional narrative about a cheating husband. “The song would be the wife's response,” she explains. “It ended up just coming out of me. I don't know if it was the universe or maybe Amy really had my back.” “Sweet Dream” is similarly multi-layered. The song explores pandemic-induced anxiety and insomnia, not that you would know it from frequent collaborator Jon Levine's bright, breezy production. “I like writing darker lyrics over the top of a lighter instrumental. I've always enjoyed that juxtaposition,” Cara says. The result is one of 2021's most deceptively hard-hitting earworms and another reminder that nobody does relatable pop quite like the “Here” hitmaker. Speaking of that ubiquitous loner anthem, Cara's early success informs her new music—at least indirectly. “I think being thrust into the music world at 18, I never really had the chance to process my emotions,” she says. “Now that I've had a year of stillness [due to the Covid-19 pandemic], I realize how special and insane that time in my life was.” That's putting it mildly. Cara exploded onto the music scene in 2015 when “Here” became the unofficial theme song for millennials. It went nuclear on streaming services and then crossed over to pop radio, eventually peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and selling three million copies. Her platinum-selling debut album, Know-It-All, delivered another smash hit with “Scars to Your Beautiful” and she memorably contributed “How Far I'll Go” to the Moana soundtrack. Cara then added further platinum plaques to her collection with “Stay,” a dizzying club collaboration with Zedd, and an unforgettable feature on Logic's “1-800-273-8255.” The Brampton, Ontario native resurfaced in 2018 with The Pains Of Growing, which won a Juno Award for Best Album and cemented Cara as one of the foremost singer/songwriters of her generation. It seems like the magnitude of those achievements is only just sinking in. “The fact that I'm three albums in is crazy,” she muses. “It has been such a wild experience. I don't know if I'll ever fully grasp it.” The experimental, deeply personal approach of “Shape Shifter” and “Sweet Dream” is reflective of the rest of In the Meantime, too. Take “Better Days,” a soaring ballad that details Cara's rock bottom. “I had a little get together on New Year's Eve 2020,” she remembers. “I felt this profound, deep sadness and sense of hopelessness. I went to my bathroom and started crying. I felt like there were no good days ahead.” Ultimately, it was a turning point. “It's when I really started working on myself and was able to get out of that gloomy space.” A lyric from the song inspired the album's title. “So it goes, you live and then you die,” Cara belts on the heartstrings-tugging anthem. “The hardest pill to swallow is the meantime.” But if “Better Days” is a glimpse of the multi-platinum artist at her lowest, “Apartment Song” represents the flip side. Produced by Joel Little, the album closer is about practicing gratitude. “I was finding living alone a little bit challenging,” she says. “Then, one day, I just looked around my place. I just had this moment of sheer happiness, finding joy in being and living alone.” In addition to Joel Little, Saalam Remi, and Jon Levine, other producers that helped craft the dense, multi-layered soundscape of In the Meantime include Greg Kurstin and J Kash along with Canadian heavyweights Mike Wise, Billboard, Doc McKinney, Banx & Ranx, and Boi-1da. In many ways, the album is a snapshot of an artist finally processing the seismic shift of becoming a household name in a remarkably short period of time. Working with this vast cast of collaborators, Cara was able to dig deep, like she always has. But this time, she's doing so with a goal that sounds simultaneously modest and herculean: “I want to make music that outlives me—that's universal enough to hit a chord with people and endure.”

We had the pleasure of interviewing Luke Spiller of The Struts over Zoom video! The third full-length from British rock band The Struts, Strange Days came to life over the course of a charmed and frenzied burst of creativity last spring. After getting tested for COVID-19, singer Luke Spiller, guitarist Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliott, and drummer Gethin Davies all moved into the Los Angeles home of Jon Levine, a producer who worked extensively on their acclaimed sophomore effort YOUNG & DANGEROUS (including the album’s chart-climbing lead single “Body Talks”). Within just ten days of couch-crashing at Levine’s house, The Struts had laid down nine original tracks and one masterful cover of a KISS B-side: a lean, mean body of work that amounts to their most glorious output to date.In an organic turn of events for a band massively embraced by some of rock-and-roll history’s greatest icons—a feat that’s included opening for The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Guns N’ Roses—Strange Days finds The Struts joining forces with a formidable lineup of guest musicians: Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott and Phil Collen, Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes, Tom Morello, and Robbie Williams. Mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer (Panic! At the Disco, Arctic Monkeys, Johnny Marr), the result is a powerhouse album that lifts The Struts’ glammed-up breed of modern rock to entirely new and wildly thrilling heights.Despite its prescient title, “Strange Days” took shape from a voice memo Spiller recorded on the band’s tour bus way back in summer 2019. Fused with a cabaret-inspired interlude Spiller had recently dreamed up, the song ultimately evolved into the perfect vessel for the frontman’s force-of-nature voice: a tenderhearted epic that offers incredible solace in the most chaotic of times. As Spiller reveals, the making of Strange Days was a period of joyful productivity. “Every day I’d wake up at about 7 a.m., get three venti Americanos delivered to the house, go out to the backyard and smoke a couple of spliffs, and listen to the voice memos I’d recorded at the sessions the day before,” he recalls. “After the first four days or so we hit a bit of a wall, so we decided to get some beers in and just stay in the pool all day—and the day after that we knocked out three whole songs.” Throughout Strange Days, that kinetic energy manifests in the album’s unbridled spirit, an element that makes every track exhilarating. “I think because we’d wanted to make an album this way for years, all that excitement and hunger led to an immediate sort of magic once we started working on it,” says Spiller. “It was undoubtedly a magical ten days for us—and I hope when people hear the album, it gives them a taste of that magic too.”We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Aloe Blacc over Zoom video! In the years since Aloe Blacc’s last album, Lift Your Spirit, the global superstar spent time working on an even dearer project: his family. All Love Everything, his upcoming album, is the singer-songwriter’s first collection of material written as a father, a journey that’s expanded Blacc’s already heartfelt artistic palette. “Becoming a father made me want to share those experiences in music,” he says, admitting it’s a challenge to translate such a powerful thing into lyrics and melody. But the listeners who have followed Blacc over the course of his 14-years-long career know that his facility with language and sound is deep -- if anyone was up to the task, it’s him. Raised by Panamanian immigrants in Southern California, Blacc grew up around the sounds of salsa, merengue, and cumbia. He initially developed his own taste by throwing himself into hip-hop before trying out his soulful voice to other ends. Across three albums, his sound evolved and grew, finding a pocket that reflects the long and beautiful history of American soul with timeless, descriptive songwriting that speaks to the broad range of human experience, from platonic love to love for humanity, from politics to aspiration. Versatile and compassionate, his songwriting is classic in a way that makes categorization irrelevant; indeed, Blacc’s lyrics have been paired with dance music and country -- always to stirring effect. Aloe Blacc isn’t defined by genre.“Rather than a genre, my music follows a theme I call A.I.M.: affirmation, inspiration, and motivation,” he explains. Beloved hits like “I Need a Dollar,” “The Man,” and “Wake Me Up,” with Avicii, may not fall under the same musical umbrella, but they’re united by how they make the listener feel. That’s Blacc’s wheelhouse, the place where he excels. “After so many opportunities to talk about my music and not feel comfortable saying, ‘I’m a pop artist’ or ‘I’m a folk artist,’ I had this realization. My songwriting genre is thematic.”“My Way,” the latest single from All Love Everything, is emblematic of Blacc’s mission. After having performed it a number of times for audiences around the world -- Blacc’s toured the globe -- he knows the song’s power well. “I know that when the rest of the world hears it, they’ll love it too,” he says. Produced by Jonas Jeberg (Panic! At the Disco, Selena Gomez), “My Way” is a piano-driven anthem about perseverance. “The harder that we grind, the sweeter is the glory,” he sings, full-throated; you know it’s true the second you hear the massive chorus.Similarly “Corner” is a song to have you tearfully singing along before it’s finished. Anchored by march-like percussion, “Corner” begins solemnly before splitting open through the sheer sincerity in Blacc’s voice as he sings, “Wherever you go, and whether you’re high or low, I’ll be there for you: I’m in your corner.” The ache in his voice makes the well-known boxing analogy into something freshly stirring. Elsewhere on the album Blacc focuses on the tender details that make up a life. The stand-out closer “Harvard,” produced by Jeberg, is a heartrending storytelling song in the tradition of Joni Mitchell and Bill Withers. It emerged from a conversation between Blacc and his co-writer Sam Hollander, who started a session by describing a beat-up car he’d seen with a Harvard sticker on the bumper. From there, they imagined a candid conversation about work and sacrifice between two strangers that hinges on the line, “I ain’t been to Harvard and I ain’t got no big degree.” Accompanied by gentle acoustic guitar, Blacc sings with disarming candor about a woman working two jobs to support her family, including a child with special needs. It’s the kind of subject matter you rarely encounter in pop music, and Blacc handles it with compassion and grace. The title track expresses the idea that ties the album together, that fuses the songs of familial love and perseverance, the autobiographical details and the imaginative portraits. “The term ‘all love everything’ is a phrase that I share with family friends,” Blacc says. “In our salutations, we would say ‘all love everything,’ whether in text or in person.” After recording the song, Blacc realized that it best summarized the spirit of this new body of work. He thought back over his catalog and saw that it fit best with what had come before it. The song’s funky bassline works in concert with Blacc’s voice as it climbs to the top of his register, spanning from the low end to the peak of his passionate tenor. All Love Everything is a generous addition to the A.I.M. catalog. It fulfills Blacc’s ambition to express the richness of familial love, while also making room for anthems about perseverance and support. Working with producers Jonas Jeberg, Jugglerz, Jon Levine, and Matt Prime, Blacc has crafted his most open-hearted album to date. Warm and earnest, All Love Everything draws on soul, folk, and contemporary pop, reminding listeners that there’s no pigeonholing the human experience. It’s out October 2nd on BMG. In 1991, he shifted his focus towards the promotional products industry when he started The Image Group. Since the founding of the company, Jon has grown The Image Group into one of the industry’s most respected distributors. Earlier this month, Jon made headlines with the acquisition of two ecommerce sites, Bag Warehouse and Thirsty Promo. The deal marks The Image Group’s move into the ecommerce world and helps them diversify their customer base. Said Levine in a recent press release “Our customers are increasingly interested in researching and procuring promotional products online. We believe the shift to online purchasing reflects the growing influence that millennial-aged employees are having in company buying decisions. This acquisition helps us remain ahead of that shift.” Over the course of this podcast, we will explore this exciting new shift to the online world and how others can learn from Jon’s experiences.

Stephen Perry is one of the Brooklyn music scene's most enthusiastic and generous boosters. He plays guitar and sings in The Planes, plays drums in Big Quiet, and runs a blog called Hearts Bleed Radio where he interviews local musicians and curates great shows. He talks with Square Zeros about his work here and shares some gnarly tracks from his high school grunge-punk outfit Epinephrine.
