Consider this your public service announcement - this episode is about the kings of nu-metal, the royalty of rap-rock, and the band responsible for the most red New York Yankee hats sold this side of the millennium - Limp Bizkit. If you've seen any of the footage from either of the Woodstock ‘99 Docs that came out a couple of years ago, or if you are of a certain age to have lived through it - you'll know that Limp Bizkit - for better or for worse - were a BIG deal… like really big. You can head back in to the Encore Archives in our Evanescence, Linkin Park, Sum 41 or Finger Eleven episodes to get a sense of how popular aggressive, metal-tinged, hip-hop appropriating music was in the early 2000s, but one could argue that none of it would have been given such a wide blast radius in that era if it wasn't for the groundwork laid down by Fred Durst and the Boiz. Of course *purists* will tell you that bands like Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against The Machine, and even Faith No More were the true innovators of the genre - and they'd be right! But where we're going - we're not bothering with such high minded concepts as ‘innovation' or ‘musicality' - after all, the song we're talking about today is from a record called ‘Chocolate Starfish and The Hot Dog Flavoured Water'; released in an era where ‘Good' music was defined as any song that had too many swears on it.  This is the Story of Limp Bizkit's Rollin' With newly unearthed audio from the band themselves!

Rainbow Butt Monkeys. No, you didn't catch me doing my vocal warmups, and our editor forgot to cut this part out - and no, I haven't been partaking in some pre-podcast psychedelics… Rainbow Butt Monkeys happens to be the name of one of Canada's preeminent rock bands of the 2000s. OK I'm bending the truth JUST A BIT  - it's only the FORMER name of one of Canada's preeminent rock bands of the 2000s.  You may be more familiar with them by their multiplatinum name; Finger Eleven.  Yes, the hard rocking five-piece from Burlington Ontario spent a resounding six years under the Rainbow Butt Monkeys moniker in the 90s, before giving themselves an edgier rebrand as Finger Eleven and riding the waves of early 2000s nu-metal, post-grunge and alt-rock. A stalwart on radio stations from coast-to-coast in this country to this very day, Finger Eleven were certainly no strangers to success in the late 2000s But as the band told me earlier this month, something strange happened on one fateful day in 2006 that would give the band a level of success they'd perhaps never expected. Creed performs with 3 Doors Down and Finger Eleven on Wednesday, July 31. Sammy Hagar brings his The Best of All Worlds Tour to Pine Knob on Friday, August 2. Plus Melissa Etheridge shares her many memories about playing Pine Knob, from opening for Bruce Hornsby to her own headlining shows. Finally, we thought we'd remember a particularly historic show. It was Talking Heads final appearance in the metro area, on August 11, 1983.

Send us a Text Message.Scotty Austin isn't your ordinary or average run-of-the-mill rock star. With a remarkable track record playing across the United States, as well as being a multi-instrumentalist in numerous genres, it is clear he has a unique perspective when it comes to creating music. Hailing from Parsons, Tennessee, his interest in various instruments started at a young age when he began reading music in kindergarten while also gaining experience in the family band at church. By the late 90s, Scotty began expanding on his knowledge of music genres and branching out to multiple styles such as percussion and classical guitar performance before earning his spot as the band leader of the official NASCAR Rolling Thunder band for an entire season. His accomplishments continued when around the early 2000s, he won fourth place in the world during the International Blues Contest while representing Memphis, Tennessee.         Shortly after, Scotty collaborated with a new original group and recording artist, Ash Bowers, along with Jason Aldean's label, Broken Bow Records, as well as the sister label, Stoney Creek Records. It wasn't long until Scotty decided to start his own original project, an indie rock band called Trash the Brand. He had wanted to record and play songs that he had written but never had the chance to play. Within weeks of forming, he was playing to packed houses and venues which in turn caught the attention of a few people in the music industry. Soon Scotty found himself in contact with Jeff Hanson (manager of Creed and Saving Abel), who offered to manage him. While negotiating, he asked Hanson to put him on the show with Saving Abel that was happening that weekend in Memphis. He was given the opening spot for the concert. Starting as the inexplicable Rainbow Butt Monkeys in the early 90s, the band wisely changed their name after the 1995 debut release and reconfigured their sound on 1998's Tip as Finger Eleven. With the capable Arnold Lanni behind the board, the band combined contemporary elements of Our Lady Peace, Helmet, Quicksand, and more in their post-grunge approach. A pair of big, thick guitar sounds with a rock steady rhythm section give singer Scott Anderson a strong base to work with, like on the riff-heavy "Condenser" and "Glimpse." But the band has multiple gears, like the subdued "Awake and Dreaming" and Tool-lite closer, "Swallowtail."
