Welcome to an inspiring episode of the "Inspire Us" podcast with your host, J. Paul Nadeau, a renowned author, motivational speaker, and former hostage negotiator. In this episode, he opens up a conversation on seeking help when the times get tough, a topic drawn from his book, "Reset, The Badass Guide to Living Life on Your Own Terms." In an attempt to shed light on the importance of asking for help, Paul states that no one, no matter how strong, is expected to bear all of life's burdens alone. The challenges and pressures of modern life may vary from our ancestors' threats, but like them, our survival odds improve greatly when we surround ourselves with a supportive tribe. Seeking help during troubled times is not a sign of weakness but a viable strategy for success. This episode highlights how resisting the tendency to hide pain and challenges can genuinely make a difference. Paul uses an example from history to illustrate this point - drawing parallels with the story of Jesus' crucifixion and how even he, in his might, required assistance. The takeaway here is that everyone, regardless of their strength or status, needs help at times, and it's okay to lean on those around us. Furthermore, Paul emphasizes that openness about struggles, be it with your closest people or mental health professionals, allows us to tap into our authentic selves' potential. It's a responsibility we all have, to be truly human and interdependent. This episode serves as a reminder that spreading optimism and hope is crucial, especially during hard times - hope that help is always available, and we just need to reach out and ask for it. In essence, this podcast episode empowers its listeners to embrace vulnerability and seek help when needed. "Reset: The Badass Guide to Living Life on Your Own Terms" illustrates the power and courage it takes to ask for help, stepping away from the stigma associated with it. Remember, you are not alone, and there is always help available. So don't hesitate to ask for it whenever you need it.

In this enlightening episode of Inspire Us, your host, J. Paul Nadeau, a former hostage negotiator turned motivational speaker, shares valuable life lessons drawn from unique and captivating stories. This particular episode explores the enlightening tale from the book 'The Zen Monkey and the Lotus Flower' compiled by Tempa Yeshi. This book offers diverse philosophies and perspectives that help make sense of complex life dynamics. The tale today is about a hare that discovered a gold-plated watering can. While beautiful, it had no usefulness to the hare, thus making it a burden. The wise monkey, Bodhi, taught the hare to appreciate aspects beyond superficial beauty, address unnecessary burdens and experience the joys of sharing. Balancing between the authors' views and his comments, Paul Nadeau draws parallels with our lives, arguing that the beauty of a thing is not only in its appearance but also in its usefulness. Paul delves deeper into the moral of the story by encouraging you to reassess aspects of your life that may no longer serve you. This is an episode of 'Negotiations Ninja' Episode 409 hosted by Mark Raffin! I'm simply resharing it here.  What is Paul's PIER negotiation process? P = Preparation and planning: Planning is mental preparation and discovery. Where are you going to meet? Under what circumstances will you meet? Will you have a second negotiator? If you truly believe you can offer something of value, you proceed. I = Intent: Your intent must be focused on your client (not yourself). It's about opening the channels of communication and asking exploratory questions. E = Engage: You must engage them from your first impression. You keep them engaged by asking engaging questions. R = Relationship: Once you've successfully baked your PIE, the goal is to build a relationship. If, at any point during the dating process, something goes wrong, you can amicably leave the process. And the more you know about who you're negotiating with, the better you can serve them. Preparation is key to success You know you're going to be meeting with someone. You know the topic you'll be talking about. Hostage negotiators don't have that luxury. They have to prepare for the unexpected. They do that by running through mock scenarios that they'd practice monthly. If you have a large negotiation in 3-4 days, you need to run through it. Ask someone to roleplay with you. Answer as thoroughly as you can. Most people don't do this. Negotiating is like dating Negotiating and selling is like dating. When you start dating someone, you want to see if you have a connection. It's an exploratory process. It's the same in a negotiation. You want to ask questions to see if they can work together. If you ask someone out on a date, your intent has to be focused on that person. You want to make it about them. You want to learn about them. Why? To build trust and likability and determine whether or not you'll ask for date number two. If you talk about yourself like you're the best thing that's come along, you'll never get a second date. Your date might just leave. So would a company. Provide people with something they truly want that fits the needs they have. People want to be seen, understood and appreciated. It's the same in business. They'll come back to someone who listens to them and knows their pain points. We don't sell to people; we sell for people The goal isn't to sell someone something they don't want. You wouldn't want a family member to work with someone who sells just for a commission. You'd want to send them to someone who cares about their outcome. They seek to understand what someone is looking to do with their product. You want to be that person. Paul emphasizes that negotiations are not hard. They're about connecting with another human being. It's when two or more people get together to reach an agreement. You're negotiating every day of your life. Don't make it complicated. Seek to listen and understand the other person and focus your intent on them; it will open doors and build relationships. Nadeau, drawing from his wealth of experience as a former hostage negotiator, international peacekeeper, and professional interrogator, provides invaluable insights into understanding and conquering this pervasive human behavior. **Understanding Self-Sabotage** Nadeau begins by unraveling the enigma of self-sabotage. He explains that it's not just about making poor decisions or hindering one's own progress; it goes much deeper. Self-sabotage often stems from the dark narratives we create about ourselves and our abilities. Just as Rocky implores his son to keep moving forward, Nadeau encourages us to take meaningful steps towards our goals, even in the face of adversity. Nadeau's personal anecdotes and experiences as a hostage negotiator and peacekeeper add depth to his insights. He shares how he had to overcome self-doubt and fear in high-stakes situations, relying on positive narratives and decisive action to navigate through challenges successfully. **Rebounding from Adversity** Another profound aspect of this episode is Nadeau's discussion on rebounding from adversity and setbacks. He acknowledges that life can throw curveballs, but it's how we respond that defines our journey. Drawing on his diverse background, Nadeau illustrates how resilience and determination can lead to remarkable comebacks. Throughout the podcast, Nadeau's warm and personable style keeps listeners engaged and inspired. His ability to blend his professional expertise with relatable anecdotes makes complex topics like self-sabotage accessible to everyone. In conclusion, this podcast episode featuring J. Paul Nadeau is a must-listen for anyone seeking to understand and conquer self-sabotage. With his unique blend of wisdom, experience, and positivity, Nadeau provides a roadmap to break free from limiting narratives and take meaningful action on the path to personal growth and success. It's a journey that, as Rocky Balboa reminds us, might not always be easy, but it's undoubtedly worth it. So, lace up your mental gloves and get ready to conquer your self-sabotage tendencies with the guidance of a true expert.

As a survivor of severe physical and emotional abuse by an alcoholic father, Paul experienced firsthand how self-sabotage can immobilize a person as effectively as any prison can. Suffering from low self-esteem and depression at an early age, Paul experienced a moment in grade 7 that turned his life around and led him to confidently take control of his life. He's now a former SVU detective, International Peacekeeper and is now an accomplished author, global motivational speaker and mental health strategist who has made it his life's mission to guide others through the thoughts and experiences in their lives that hold them hostage, just as his thoughts had once done to him. #voc #voicesofcourage #KenDFoster #JPaulNadeau #podcast See the full podcast video: https://youtu.be/WGNez1Jd_ks Like || Comment || Share ----------------------------------------------------------- Enjoy & stay connected with us! ► Visit us: voicesofcourage.us ► Like us on Facebook: facebook.com/VoicesofCourageRadio ► Follow us on Instagram: instagram.com/kendfoster_ ► Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com/KennethFoster ► Contact us on Linkedin: linkedin.com/in/kendfoster

“The quality of our lives depends not on whether we have conflicts, but on how we respond to them” - Thomas Crum Today I will be speaking to a man whose compelling life story has left me speechless. He has been through life-threatening circumstances but still managed to become the amazing positive person he is today.  My guest Paul Nadeau is a Canadian former hostage negotiator, peacekeeper, author, screenwriter, motivational, and keynote speaker. He grew up in a violent home. Teachers and students looked down upon him but he was able to turn things around and was even able to publish a bestseller entitled Hostage to Myself.  Take a moment and let Paul's thoughts and ideals inspire you. You too, can be a hero. Highlights: ✅ We are more similar than we are different.  ✅ It is important to put yourself in someone else's shoes.  ✅ Reacting is different from responding. Reacting leads to conflict, depression, and anxiety. ✅ A winner's mindset: Responds instead of reacting and chooses to make positive responses. Believes in oneself and moves forward with confidence despite the difficulties. Practices the golden rule. Start each day with gratitude.   Important stories: ✍

About this episode: Hundreds of thousands of kids are being sold for sex in the US, every day in hotels, motels, houses, cars, and more. Originally met by charming predators in parks, shopping malls, and on social media, these young ones come from all walks of life. The number one crime against humanity does not know ethnic, religious, or socioeconomic boundaries. Our girls, and now many boys too, are being groomed, tricked, and enslaved, largely for the pleasure of middle and upper-class family men. Where is this happening? How is it occurring? This story is one of the many. It's a vast issue that occurs in every zip code in the country and impacts everyone. In this episode, J. Paul Nadeau interviews Michael about this horrible truth and about what parents can do to protect their children. From Michael about his documentary: Making this film lit my fire for our children and propelled me into years of networking, interviewing, and researching. I spent time with survivor-victors, advocates, law enforcement, healers, ex-buyers, and ex-sellers, and the result is a ground-breaking TV series that I'm bringing forth this year with Brave Road Entertainment. Stay tuned on social media. It's going to be big. http://www.michaelmatucci.com/teens-4-sale About Michael: Michael is an agent of truth and transformation. Words and film are his tools, and he loves revealing the secrets of the game of life to leaders and inspirational people and empowering them to their highest light, impact, and potential. He uses his camera to project voices and stories of hope from marginalized people groups that show that the brightest lights often come from the darkest places. After several years creating and producing intuitive projects on his own, he's returning to crews and stages to bring forth an epic TV docuseries from the front lines of the movement to shift sex trafficking in North America.  Websites: MichaelMatucci.com & EncompassLIFE.com IG: @MichaelMatucci Mental wellness resource: Take Control of Your Life by J. J. Paul Nadeau is a brother and father. He's the son of a violently abusive, alcoholic father. At 7 years old he decided he wanted to be a police officer so he could arrest his own father. Life in school was not much better as Paul was conditioned to believe he was worthless and incapable of amounting to much. At 16, his father killed himself with the same rifle he had claimed to have killed Santa Claus when Paul was 8. This treatment could have set him on a pretty grim path. Instead, at 21 years old he chose his own destiny and became a police officer, and then sargeant in Durham Region outside of Toronto. He continued to set the bar higher by becoming an expert Hostage Negotiator, Criminal Detective, Expert Interrogator, International Peace Keeper and instructor. There were plenty of pivotal cases, personal setbacks and shocking events in his 30-year career in policing. He's now an international keynote speaker, actor, coach and best-selling author of “Take Control of Your Life,” which distills the valuable lessons he's lived and learned through his personal and professional experiences. Who knew that having a trusted relationship would save a life. As a peacekeeper, Paul Nadeau made sure that when training others, having a relationship was one of the first things he did to earn trust. Without Paul knowing, one of those he trained was actually an undercover terrorist who coordinated a raid where Paul was, with the intention of "taking no prisoners". With Paul surrounded and being beaten by other terrorists, it was clear to him that he was going to die. But what saved him was the trusted relationship he developed with the terrorist that had him live. This skill helped Paul in law enforcement as well, going on to have gang members reveal things they usually never do. All of this is thanks to Paul's intuition. #247: Take Control of Your Life with Paul Nadeau Today we are speaking with Motivational and keynote speaker/Mental Health strategist, Paul Nadeau.  Paul is a former hostage negotiator, international peacekeeper and special victims unit detective. His life reads like a Hollywood blockbuster, but it didn't start off easy. He was severely abused by an alcoholic father as a child but he made choices not to follow in his fathers footsteps and his choices have led him to help others in a profound way. He is now a best-selling author, motivational speaker and thought leader - to name but a few of his accomplishments. In this episode we discuss: 1) When we are repeatedly told that we are a failure, we subconsciously own that story and it requires a lot of work to see the story differently.  When we decide to change the story and believe in ourselves we show up in a more powerful way. 2) Learning to start your day purposely is the way to manage your own energy and set your intentions and energy for the day.3) No one is coming to save you.  You have to stand up on your own rock.  Others can assist you in standing up, yet you are responsible for how you choose to show up in your life. 4) The hurdles, obstacles and challenges that led Paul down an incredible path that he is on today to continue to inspire others to trust themselves and listen to and honour their voice. In this episode, Sarah M. Carlson joins J. Paul Nadeau on the show. Sarah served as a targeting analyst in the CIA's Counterterrorism Center. Before that, she served as a counterterrorism analyst at the Defense Intelligence Agency. She also completed rotations to the National Counterterrorism Center and U.S. Northern Command. Her counterterrorism career focused on groups operating in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia and she traveled throughout those regions. She was in Libya in 2011 around the time Muammar Gaddafi was killed and rebel opposing tribes fought each other viciously to take power. Her time in Libya was intense. She discusses her mission and the constant threat she and her team were under during a revolution that threatened their lives and safety until they were able to escape. What she touches on is how, under extreme duress, one's body can simply shut down. One of the secrets to preventing that is to "stay busy," Sarah says. Sarah's mission there caused her trauma, and one of the consequences of trauma is that it very often leads to "hiding." Many veterans who return home from war often hide and don't tell people what they're nightmares are, or tell others how they're struggling emotionally, or mentally. Because for a lot of people who experience trauma or who have been emotionally abused - or as in Sarah's case - have suffered PTSD, where it feels like your mental health is spiraling downward, it can feel like an embarrassing or shameful revelation, and the fear of being ignored or unsupported can be overwhelming. Again, it comes down to the stigma attached to opening up and asking for help. In Sarah's case, as you'll hear, she didn't receive the help or support she needed – nor did any of her team, once they returned from mission. The CIA did not offer her help, but, as you'll hear, Sarah recognized her need for help and received it from her loving and supportive family as well as receiving professional help. She's a survivor and has carried on serving to help others plan for any kind of disaster or evacuation – something she knows about, first hand. In these COVID19 times, having too much idle time on our hands can cause more anxiety and stress, and recognizing that you may be experiencing trauma is the first step to getting help. Since leaving the CIA, Sarah has continued in public service with local government in the Seattle area as an emergency manager at the county and city levels, where she has specialized in all-hazards preparation, disaster response, and alert and warning.   She has published multiple articles and her first book, In the Dark of War, is now available. In this episode, your host of Inspire Us, former hostage negotiator J. Paul Nadeau, chats with retired FBI agent and fellow hostage negotiator Gary Noesner. Gary reviews his role as one of the hostage negotiators involved in the tragic 1993 Waco Texas siege, that lasted 52 days involving David Koresh and members of the Branch Davidians. The outcome was tragic: 76 members of the Branch Davidians died in that crisis, and this event stresses the extreme importance of teams working together, whether within an organization or with others outside their organization. The lessons Gary shares in this episode are priceless. He also shares how this case impacted him and how he got through. Gary has an impressive background, to say the least. He served more than 30 years as an FBI agent, and 26 of those years were served as a special agent. In his career, he's investigated and negotiated numerous crisis incidents such as prison riots, right-wing militia standoffs, terrorist embassy takeovers, airplane high jackings, and over 120 overseas kidnapping cases involving American citizens. Gary continues to consult independently and has appeared on many television news broadcasts, documentaries, and has been featured in many publications. His book, “Stalling for time – my life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator” is what inspired the popular TV mini-series, "Waco," now available on Netflix.  In this episode, Gary also shares his approach on how to avoid and resolve conflict in these troubling times, as well as how to truly connect with others to develop relationships of mutual respect and trust. To find out more about Gary, check out his website: www.garynoesner.com His book is available online and is a must-read.

We've all experienced times when we've slipped into sadness or depression and we just didn't see it coming, or we just couldn't fight it off. Once we find ourselves in that dark place of depression or anxiety, is there a way we can find our way back to the light? How do some people handle life's stresses better than others? In this episode, Paul talks about the importance of self-awareness and not giving in to the self-sabotaging voices in our heads that, if allowed to stay, will take us hostage and lock us in a cage of our own making. Awareness and mindset are keys to un-hostaging yourself once self-sabotage strikes. When you face your fears and worries head-on, you begin to disempower them. Take control of the moment and choose your response to whatever threatens your happiness and mental wellness.

Welcome to Inspire Us, with J. Paul Nadeau. I'm Paul. I'm delighted to have you join me on this journey. I've been a guest on several wonderful podcasts and radio shows, including SiriusXM, where I've become a regular guest. I figured it was high time I start my own podcast not only to share my experiences but to share those of others who will join me as my guests. I've lived a pretty interesting and exciting life so far and have worked as a Hostage Negotiator, International Peacekeeper, and Major Crimes Investigator to name but a few of the experiences I've had. I've also written a book called, "Take Control of Your Life" which HarperCollins so wonderfully published. My book is a guide on how to beat self-sabotage and live the life we so richly deserve to live. It's helping many deal with anxiety and depression and helping them take control. My podcast will aim to do the same. We're living in tough times, aren't we? We certainly are, and like a good book, a hot cup of coffee, a wonderful meal, or any other pleasure that helps us escape this crazy world, listening to a good podcast can bring about a smile on our faces and challenge us to adjust our thinking. I'll endeavor to do that with my stories and experiences and those of my guests. Thanks for joining me. Let's all be the light to help each of us live the lives we deserve.

Khierstyn’s guest for this episode of Crowdfunding Uncut is Paul Nadeau, skilled hostage negotiator and the person who is going to revolutionize how you think about stopping self-sabotage. He takes his knowledge of negotiating with people in crises and applies it to personal and professional situations, giving you the best chance at finding success and happiness in your own life. It’s an episode that is going to help you advance your career, find fulfillment, and learn how to prevent your subconscious from sabotaging your success. Don’t miss this insightful and inspirational episode. How are hostage negotiations and business transactions connected? Paul transitioned from his background in traditional police force work into hostage negotiations because he learned how to communicate persuasively with people - a skill that is necessary for any business environment. He frequently takes people who have reached the end of their rope and renegotiates a situation into one where everyone is given the best chance to succeed and find peace. These scenarios were not approached with an inflated sense of bravado and an abundance of pre-formed answers to the problems at hand. Rather, he followed a refined process that always kept the human factors in mind. On this episode of Crowdfunding Uncut Paul explains to Khierstyn that you can’t judge a person before you get into the situation and identify all the details. You must then ask them, "What is it you want? What is going on with you right now?" Making that personal connection with an individual (hostage or potential client) is key for the interaction to be successful. They must know you, like you, and trust you in order for any solution to succeed. Taking your time, having empathy for the individual, and working together towards a solution works for hostage crises and business interactions. Paul draws on his extensive experiences to offer you a great explanation as to why these two seemingly separate scenarios are linked, and it’s something you don’t want to miss. The first step in stopping self-sabotage is learning how to recognize your own self-worth Paul and Khierstyn are adamant on this episode of Crowdfunding Uncut that every individual is worthy of success, happiness, and fulfillment. These wonderful things only come after recognizing your own self-worth. In order to stop self-sabotage, you must take the time to recognize the areas of life that you are struggling in, identify the conscious and subconscious thoughts that are holding you back from succeeding, and eliminate those thought patterns. Khierstyn explains that reality is often 100% contradictory to what your subconscious is telling you. If you take away the bars that are caging you in, nothing can hold you back. For more great advice on learning how to recognize your self-worth, be sure to listen to this podcast episode. Don’t let the negative defining moments in your life create a belief system that dictates your future Everyone has those moments in our pasts that resurface and tell us we’re not worthy of happiness or success. Paul explains to Khierstyn that there are two ways of handling these moments in retrospect. You can choose to believe that the terrible thing that occurred was your fault, and because of that, you are not worthy. Or you can choose to understand that terrible things happen, it was not your fault, and that you don’t have to internalize it and let it define your future. Essentially, you can choose to be a victim or a survivor. The most important moments in your life are the ones that are happening right now, and Paul and Khierstyn want you to recognize you are worthy of enjoying these moments. Don’t miss the rest of their conversation on this episode of Crowdfunding Uncut. Your past does not define you, your future has not yet been written, and you are worthy of success and happiness Perhaps the biggest takeaway from this episode of Crowdfunding Uncut is the fact that there is nothing separating you from success. The other people that you admire and view as successful are no more worthy of that success than you are. Paul explains that your past does not have to define you, you can learn how to renegotiate situations to your benefit, and that your future has not yet been written. You CAN stop self-sabotage, you CAN pursue personal and professional success, and no one can dictate how you choose to feel or react to situations in your life. This podcast episode is sure to make you rethink how you approach your past, present, and future, and it’s one not to be missed. Change Your Story, Change Your Life

YOU ARE ME Is every cop a criminal and every sinner a saint? My answer is yes. It doesn’t have to be your answer, but here’s what you discover when it is. People are not their actions. Their actions will define them to the world. Their actions carry consequences. But at the core, every human being is the same. Every human being has the same needs, desires, emotions, and soul. There is something that makes us human that lies beyond right and wrong or good and evil. It can’t be named; it can’t be captured by words. It just is. Today’s guest, Paul Nadeau, doesn’t just hold this belief. He lives it. He lives it in a bold, courageous, and inspiring way. He’s a former detective who became an internationally recognized crisis and hostage negotiator. He has a gift for conflict resolution, even when the conflict is extremely intense and violent. Paul has done an acclaimed Ted Talk on the subject; CNN reaches out to him for consultation and insight on the subject of violent conflict and terrorism. The secret to Paul Nadeau’s ability to defuse explosive rage is his deep compassion for the men and women intent on harming themselves and others. Today, Paul shares his wisdom and knowledge about conflict resolution with business people and entrepreneurs. The skills he learned by risking his life can help you become more persuasive, influential, and caring. They can dramatically enrich your business and your life. Listen to his gripping story.
