Hey there, Scorekeepers! On our off weeks for the next few months, we're revisiting ART CLASS, the 12-episode series all about arts and arts education that we released last year. We hope you enjoy taking this stroll down memory lane with us!--This episode was originally released on February 13, 2024.Happy Black History Month, Classmates! This week's ART CLASS is all about healing and self-care. As Black folks and Black artists especially, it's so easy to over-extend ourselves during the month of February, so this week we devote the first part of the episode to delving into our self-care routines. How does one establish boundaries in a world that doesn't want you to have any? Where does self-care intersect with community care? Then, we're joined by an exceptional guest! Last October, we recorded a live show at Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall, where we were joined by the amazing Jonathan McCrory, Artistic Director of the National Black Theatre, which produced the recent Broadway hit Purlie Victorious starring Leslie Odom, Jr. and Kara Young. We had a powerful conversation all about this incredible piece of theater, its relevance in these times, and what he does to take care of himself (0:26:36). Later, it's time for another installment of Career Day with choreographer, Jennifer Lisette Lopez (0:53:51). Plus, the Morning Announcements with Emile (0:50:55) and a little Pure Black Joy (1:02:02) to get you through the week. Please take your seats, because class is back in session!--Hosts: Lee Bynum (Insta), Rocky Jones (Insta), Paige Reynolds (Insta)Guests: Jonathan McCrory, Jennifer Lisette LopezContributor: Emilia MettenbrinkProducer: Rocky Jones--LinksJonathan McCrory (Website) (Insta)National Black Theatre (Website)Jennifer Lisette Lopez (Website)--Hey hey, THE SCORE is now on social! With the freshly pardoned Todd and Julie Chrisley already heading back to television, the co-hosts question if there could be more high-profile pardons in the president's future. Then, they weigh in on rumors of Beckham family drama stemming from son Brooklyn's wedding to actress Nicola Peltz where she reportedly clashed with her mother-in-law Victoria. Andy Cohen discusses what fans can expect from this year's BravoCon and why he thinks Joy Behar would make a great addition to "The Real Housewives of New York." What's up, Scorekeepers? It's time for a fresh episode of THE SCORE and have we got a jam-packed episode for you today. First up, we have a chat about this year's Tony nominees, including the incredible Kara Young, who's been nominated now four years in a row (0:16:45)! Talk about Pure Black Joy! Then, we have an important and timely conversation about DEI in the arts (0:31:40). In light of the poicy shifts of the new administration, all over the country we're seeing arts organizations slash their DEI programs and DEI professionals like Rocky getting restructured out the door. We take a look at the current landscape and ponder the next steps for those of us who believe that our art spaces shouldn't be uniform, inequitable, and exclusive. And, of course, we couldn't leave you without a little Pure Black Joy to get you through the rest of the week (1:27:23). This year Kara Young broke a Tonys record, becoming the first Black person to receive three consecutive nominations and only the sixth person ever to do so. "It feels special that the third [nomination] is historical, but more historical in the sense that it's civil rights activist Ossie Davis' words that are being activated and recognized." Young's nomination is for the play ‘Purlie Victorious,' a comedy written by Davis in 1961 and revived for Broadway this year with Young and Leslie Odom Jr. "This is 63 years since its last production on Broadway, and I feel like for this play to be recognized is so important." Young says the script of ‘Purlie Victorious' is "such an American masterpiece of text" and that it was the diverse audiences that came to see the play that made it so special. "In the history of people being silenced, you are listening to a Black woman, a Black man, a Black cast, speak their truth, unapologetically speak Ossie Davis' words. How magical is that?" For Young, it's the power of plays that inspires her. "I feel like plays allow us to see each other as human." Elisha Lawson has acted in a number of projects through the years, including Boardwalk Empire, Shades of Blue, NCIS: New Orleans, and Group. In addition to his work on television, he has worked on several plays such as productions of A Raisin in the Sun and To Kill A Mockingbird, where he first met fellow Group cast-member, Ezra Barnes. His latest play, Syncing Ink, was created by playwright NSangou Njikam and will begin performances May 7, with an official opening set for May 19, at the Apollo Theater in New York City. In our conversation, we discussed his German upbringing; the importance of faith in his life's journey; his improvisational roots as part of Chicago City Limits; the influences of Denzel Washington and Marlon Brando; working with Kara Young on his latest project; and exploring the naturalism of his performances facilitated by meticulous preparation.Opening Credits: Masteredit - Contemplation I CC BY-SA 4.0 DEED; Masteredit - Reverie I CC BY-SA 4.0 DEED; Closing Credits: Nangdo - Intro I CC BY 4.0 DEED

Notable News: Pass Over had their official opening night on Sunday and the reviews are in! Broadway World's Christian Lewis said, “If we can follow the lead of this production, Broadway can pass over into something different, something better, something more equitable and diverse, something more political.” NY Daily News's Chris Jones said, “Pass Over” is a Biblically moralistic work that calls out white America, declares that Black lives matter, and demands structural change, especially regarding the police." Time Out's Adam Feldman gave the play 4 stars and said, "Pass Over is a risky enterprise—a serious non-musical show, opening in the summer amid a public-health crisis—and although Pass Over deals with questions of escape, it is far from escapist entertainment." The Broadway League recently announced that they will not publicly share grosses for the 2021-22 season. Moulin Rouge cast members will headline the 2021 US Open opening night ceremony. The Actors Fund revealed that performer Debbie Allen, philanthropist Niko Elmaleh, producer Stacey Mindich, and “Stars in The House” creators Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley will receive The Actors Fund's Medal of Honor at their 2021 Gala. Casting: Edmund Donovan heads to Broadway this fall in Lynn Nottage's latest play Clyde's. He completes a cast that also includes the previously announced Uzo Aduba, Ron Cephas Jones, Reza Salazar, and Kara Young. Leading the cast, casting office Stewart/Whitley revealed on a now-deleted Instagram post, will be Ana Villafañe (On Your Feet!) as Roxie Hart, Bianca Marroquín (a longtime Roxie in the revival) as Velma Kelly, and Tony winner Lillias White (The Life, How to Succeed…) as Matron Mama Morton. Just sharing a poem I wrote in middle I BELIEVE it's still good enough to share, it's called I BELIEVE lol
Day 3 of the Harvey Weinstein trial was filled with drama and surprises! And there was another celebrity witness today with the appearance of Oscar nominated actor Rosie Perez - she was the witness who almost didn't appear. The defense fought to keep her out of the courtroom but the prosecution argued just as vociferously that the jury should hear her evidence. Her evidence was damaging for Weinstein in that it backed up some of Annabella Sciorra's testimony from the previous day. Dr. Barbara Ziv, a forensic psychiatrist, also gave evidence. She was called by the prosecution to explain to the jury why Weinstein's alleged victims would continue contact or have friendly or even romantic relationships with the defendant even though they had been raped by him. Her theories are controversial and it remains to be seen whether the jury will be convinced by Dr Ziv. And just at the end of the day there was another celebrity witness. Kara Young, a former New York model, gave evidence. Young's major claim to fame was that she dated a Mr Donald Trump for two years in the late nineties. She told the court that when at an Oscar watching party in March 1994 she notice Annabella was acting strangely and was jittery and that there were long cuts on her upper thighs and that she asked Sciorra if she had been cutting herself. The testimony from Day 3 is quite compelling and we hope you enjoy the third installment in our series.
