Jason McGahan is the high-performance manager with Kerry GAA, and shares his journey from playing football in Armagh to managing performance for one of Ireland's top GAA counties. He provides valuable insights into building high-performance structures within sports teams, illustrating how clubs can improve their operations without hefty financial investments. In a compelling discussion, the conversation shifts to the concept of athletic development and the significance of supporting not only players but also coaches, volunteers, and staff. Jason emphasises the importance of communication, internal motivation, and shared vision in creating a solid high-performance culture. He also discusses how clubs, regardless of size, can implement elements of high-performance strategies by investing in current personnel and encouraging continuous education. Jason provides practical advice for grassroots coaches on incorporating athletic development principles and utilising simple tools like RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) to better monitor player loads. The episode concludes with a conversation about the implications of early specialization in sports and the vital role of resilience in athletes' development journeys. Jason's insights offer a fresh perspective on cultivating a well-rounded, supportive environment for young athletes and coaches alike. 2.00" Paul Galvin, Kerry GAA legend, as you've never heard him before. He tells how his continuing 8 year collaboration with Dunnes Stores started, how he hand delivered his autobiography to Dunnes supremo Margaret Heffernan. After ten years of teaching he grew tired of the repetition, he was no longer enthused. He was, however, always enthused by design, even a simple Mitre football he looked at as a 'lovely object of design'. He says he's probably a frustrated architect and he has a BIG interest in 'bio-architecture', something he learnt about from a Netflix series called 'Abstract' and Israeli architect called Neri Oxman. based at MIT. He looks at stadia on Google Maps, and draws inspiration from their beautiful shapes. He he makes a connection between the GAA and Dunnes Stores, as part of the Irish cultural heritage. The first connection was made when he sent his book, 'In my own words' to GAA fan Margaret Heffernan on the instigation of Irish Independent journalist Bairbre Power.Comparing Paul Galvin with another Dunnes Stores brand, Paul Costello, Paul G. says he has no plans to expand outside men's clothing and footwear, where he says there's plenty of space to expand. However he does mention 3D mugs and references Kerry based 3D printers WAZP who previously joined TeamGBS.19.00" Paul talks about 'his club', his newly launched 'side hustle', the Keohane Athletic Club. He explains how the concept works and how GAA clubs may be able to make money from selling Keohane designs to club members.Another, recent, source of inspiration for Paul is the art of former Roscommon GAA player, turned artist, Neil Patrick Collins. His 'hire in a heartbeat'? Ashley McDonnell of Barcelona based Puig the he met through film maker Perry Ogden. But first he discusses poor financial literacy in Ireland amongst both small and medium sized firms. Mentoring is part of the lending package, paid for by MFI. Covid loan performance is better than expected, he says. He was very encouraged that MFI saw a lot of new companies being started during Covid, across all sectors. He explains how they deal with unsecured loans. He also talks about MFI's future. His 'hire in a heartbeat'? Elwin Groenevelt CEO of Netherlands based Qredits58.00" Rosemary Steen, CEO, Design and Craft Council of Ireland. On Episode 15 of TGBS Tony Smurfit referenced the number of designers that his company, Smurfit Kappa has inhouse. Rosemary makes the pitch for other businesses to hire more designers, 'good for business'. She discusses 'Pylon of the Month' . According to a Grant Thornton report design employment could recognise significantly, by up to 40k, by 2025. She explains what supports the sector needs to ensure this growth. With the extremely long lead-in to this year's All-Ireland final, Mayo have the luxury of getting a close-up view of the delayed semi-final between Kerry and Tyrone, the winners of which will meet James Horan's team in the Sam Maguire decider on 11th September. In this episode of the Mayo News football podcast, we preview Saturday's game, from a Mayo angle. Rob Murphy hosts the show and he's joined by two guests with deep knowledge of the respective teams - Tralee-based Ballinrobe native Maurice Horan, who once managed the Limerick footballers and who has his finger on the pulse of Kerry GAA, and GAA journalist and writer Declan Bogue, who has followed closely the fortunes of Tyrone GAA for several years.Covid provides an all-pervasive backdrop to Saturday's semi-final and Declan shines a light on what's been a crazy few weeks for the O'Neill County as they've grappled with a serious outbreak of the infection within their ranks. Maurice, meanwhile, fills us in on the cautious optimism he has detected among the Kingdom faithful in recent weeks. The lads look back at the great Tyrone/Kerry rivalry of the Noughties and how it largely fizzled out over the following decade, as Kerry asserted their dominance and memories of those landmark All-Ireland wins by Tyrone began to fade. Declan and Maurice then provide their thoughts on Mayo's win over Dublin and they assess the county's potential for going one step further in next month's decider. In a wide-ranging chat featuring plenty of anecdotes, we also hear a story about the hidden link between Fermanagh and Mayo, one that not many people would know about. The Mayo News football podcast is produced and edited by Ger Duffy Media. He is the epitome of leaning into life and that's something we talk about during this very interesting 40 mins chat. We went deep on this one and talked about what Alan believes is his greatest gift that he brings to his clients and the world. If you follow Alan on his social media he is full of energy and his optimism and drive is infectious, however we can't be up all the time and Alan discusses his struggles but also his "toolbox" of go to habits that help him daily to be more mindful and flip his mindset. We discuss how as we grow older that we are more aware of ourselves, our bodies and our direction and I suppose our life's mission statement compared to when we were in our 20's. We also talked about his passion and empathy for his clients and how his clients invest in him because they can feel that he genuinely cares for them and their progress which can be rare these days to find a trainer like him. Alan recently started working with the Kerry GAA minor hurlers which has pushed him outside of his comfort zone after mostly working with footballers but he is loving it and enjoying working within a new sport and is having amazing results with the team already. Alan also discussed his tips and golden nuggets of information for people wanting to make changes in their lives whether that be diet wise or exercise wise and how people can succeed in their lives. It was an amazing chat with an amazing trainer but more importantly a fantastic human being who I am delighted to call a very good friend and glad that he is in my own inner circle because I know that anytime spent is his company raises my own mood and positivity.
