Notions of abnormal development may actually represent natural variations in neurological functioning."Dr. Roger McFillin: "The key is recognizing this is a skill to be developed, not a disorder to be medicated. By understanding and working with our brain's natural tendencies rather than against them, we can enhance our focus."Dr. Kristin Reihman: "We help people understand where the glitches are so they can actually rewire them and get to the place where they don't need medication. They don't lose their neurodiversity and brilliance just because it's easier to function in the world."Dr. Kristin Reihman: "If the brain gets the signal to grow, heal, and organize at the midbrain, it will continue that process on the way up. It's really a bottoms-up approach that focuses on resetting the stage for the brain to work properly."Dr. Kristin Reihman: "The Family Hope Center uses an integrated neurological chart to measure a variety of brain functions. We chart people's abilities and plug in a program to stimulate growth in specific areas, helping to smooth out the road from the ground up."Note: This podcast episode is designed solely for informational and educational purposes, without endorsing or promoting any specific medical treatments. Create a routine based on invitation versus expectation where YOU are in control of all your dogs decisions, including where to go inside and outside, what state of mind they are in and how the greet people, objects and other animals 5. Reward only a calm state of mind by only allowing them to exit the crate when calm, fed when calm, allowed outside when calm, leashed when calm, petted when calm, and so on 6. Allow them to smell new people, animals environments while not exciting them by saying things such as "Oh what is that buddy?!", "Do you want to go see that?", "What do you think boy??" 7. Divorce is complex and traumatic to all parties involved, especially for the children. Co-parenting adds a whole other layer of challenges, especially when behavioral problems arise in children and you're not on the same page with your ex.  In this episode, I share the screen and engage in valuable conversation with Kimball Lewis, the CEO of EmpoweringParents.com. Lewis shares timeless and practical parenting advice to help parents manage the most challenging child behavior problems.  Key points in this episode:  ✔️ Kids who act out have difficulty in problem-solving. Lewis cites these are emotional troubles dealing with frustration, anger, and issues that kids don't necessarily understand why they act out as a result. In addition, they may have functional problems and have a hard time meeting responsibilities like getting up and going to school or putting the video game down.   ✔️ Blaming your co-parent for your child's behavior doesn't do your child any good. Children see themselves as an extension of both parents. So when you're blaming the other parent, you're essentially creating more issues with your kids instead of treating them as an individual. ✔️ Put accountability on your child, and they'll have a much better chance of improving. Lewis shares, "you're not responsible for your child's behavior. Your child is. If you want to keep the accountability on your child, what you're responsible for is your response to it. There are effective and ineffective responses, but don't consider the child's behavior as your fault. The child needs to be held accountable, and that's how they're going to learn to behave better." ✔️ Stop participating in an argument with your child. When your child's arguing against your rules, and you've explained yourself once, you don't have to have that argument any longer. You can say, "look, these are the rules you need to comply with, or else there will be consequences tomorrow. We can sit down for 20 minutes, and we can talk about it. We'll schedule it out."  ✔️  Applying consequence is not a punishment. Instead, you're helping to train and teach your child how to behave and solve problems appropriately. Although it may not work the first time, you're going to have to keep applying these things, so if you use a consequence and then the child does it again the next day, it doesn't mean that it's not working. You have to keep applying it right.  ✔️ Don't take their behavior personally.  Lewis reminds this even when they swear at you because they're not solving the problems effectively, and you end up being the recipient of it. For example, they could be repeating something that the other spouse told them that they should and have no business knowing, and they'll use it against you to solve their problem, which is to get out of responsibility or out of frustration. So you can't take it personally, and you have to view it as a behavior problem. ✔️ EmpoweringParents.com provides a total transformation program called "Two Parents, One Plan" that serves as an instruction manual to help separated parents deal with defiant kids. Connect with Kimball Lewis: Kimball Lewis is the CEO of EmpoweringParents.com, the leading provider of parenting and coaching programs for parents struggling with severe defiance, constant arguing, and other behavior problems in children ages 5 to 25. Today we had a fascinating conversation with Kevin Behan. Lately we've been talking a lot about our furry little ones. A few days ago we talked with Robert Mueller who creates a raw, organic dog food that's the healthiest food ever. Now today we're talking about how to train dogs and dog psychology with Kevin Behan! Who knew there was so much behind natural dog training. For those that don't know Kevin has worked and trained animals his whole life. He can work with you and your pet's needs via Skype or phone consultation if you'd like to checkout his website called Natural Dog Training. He takes a much deeper philosophical and spiritual approach to training dogs. Most dog trainers that are well known like Cesar Milan talk about the notion that animals always seek out an alpha male and look for ways to dominate the rest of the dogs that are in their pack. Kevin Behan talks about why dog's behave poorly from a completely different perspective. He talks about how our dogs are a mirror to our own lives and the animal can sense emotional turmoil in your life and seeks discharge that energy from you so that you will feel better or at the very least be able to recognized areas in your own life that are lacking. Sounds pretty esoteric doesn't it? It's a revolutionary way of dog training that nobody seems to talk about. Here's an example that I shared on the show. Kate and I live in a what used to be a sleepy little beach town here in southern California. Over the past few years more people have been moving here because it's right on the ocean and is a breathtaking place to live. It's a vacation destination. But with that comes more traffic, more noise and more craziness. In recent years the area near our home has got quite loud and we've been looking for ways to move and as a result have become increasingly frustrated. According to Kevin Behan and his Natural Dog Training philosophy, Maggie can sense our frustration and acts out our own frustrations by barking, growling and displaying bad behavior. He is the author of Your Dog Is Your Mirror: The Emotional Capacity of Our Dogs and Ourselves as well as an older book written a few years ago called Natural Dog Training: The Canine Arts Kennel Program - Teach Your Dog By Using His Natural Instincts When we realize this is what's happening we can direct their aggression towards us rather than trying to stop them from helping offset that negative charge we've built up. He offers all kinds of tips about spaying or neutering your pets, how to stop aggression and teach your dogs to come upon command as well as many other natural dog training tips and ideas. Your dog really is your mirror and can show you things in your life that need improving. This is Extreme Health Radio by the way! With all the whining, complaining, begging, and negotiating, parenting can seem more like a chore than a pleasure. Dr. Catherine Pearlman, syndicated columnist and one of America's leading parenting experts, has a simple yet revolutionary solution: Ignore It! Dr. Pearlman's four-step process returns the joy to child rearing. Combining highly effective strategies with time-tested approaches, she teaches parents when to selectively look the other way to withdraw reinforcement for undesirable behaviors. Too often we find ourselves bargaining, debating, arguing and pleading with kids. Instead of improved behavior parents are ensuring that the behavior will not only continue but often get worse. When children receive no attention or reward for misbehavior, they realize their ways of acting are ineffective and cease doing it. Using proven strategies supported by research, this book shows parents how to: - Avoid engaging in a power struggle- Stop using attention as a reward for misbehavior- Use effective behavior modification techniques to diminish and often eliminate problem behaviors Overflowing with wisdom, tips, scenarios, frequently asked questions, and a lot of encouragement, Ignore It! is the parenting program that promises to return bliss to the lives of exasperated parents.

Background/Aims: To assess the association between food intake and diet quality and behavioral problems at the 10-year follow-up of the two population-based birth cohorts of the studies German Infant Nutritional Intervention and `Influences of lifestyle-related factors on the immune system and the development of allergies in childhood'. Methods: Cross-sectional data on food intake over the past year were collected by a parent-reported food frequency questionnaire. Diet quality was based on reference values of food amounts of the optimized mixed diet. Behavioral problems were assessed by a parent-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Relationships between food category intake, diet quality and behavior problems were examined using multivariable regression modeling adjusted for gender, sociodemographic characteristics, body mass index, physical exercise, television viewing/PC use and total energy intake. A total of 3,361 children with complete data were analyzed. Results: Children with increased intake of confectionery had increased odds of having emotional symptoms {[}adjusted odds ratio (ORadj) 1.19, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.08-1.32] compared to children with low intake. A higher diet quality score was associated with lower likelihood of emotional symptoms (ORadj 0.89, 95% CI 0.80-0.98). The un-adjusted significant relationship between diet quality and hyperactivity/inattention was attenuated by adjusting for several confounders to an ORadj of 0.92 (95% CI 0.82-1.03). Conclusions: Increased consumption of high-sugar products and lower diet quality are associated with a higher likelihood of emotional symptoms in children. Copyright (C) 2012 S. Karger AG, Basel

There are many contributing factors that cause behavioral problems in pets. Some of these factors include poor training techniques, lack of understanding on how pets communicate, environmental factors, and medical issues. In addition an animal’s genetic predisposition and underlying neurochemistry are also factors that can lead to behavioral problems such as aggression, anxiety, panic, house-soiling, feather picking etc…..If the behavioral problems stems in part or solely due to underlying neurophysiological reasons, medication may be a necessary and valuable part of an overall treatment program. The assessment of whether the behavior problem is based in underlying physiology should be seen by a qualified individual such as a veterinary behaviorist (www.dacvb.org) or a veterinarian with a special interest in behavior (www.avsab.org). The medications that can be used in pets with behavior problems are similar to medications used in people with various behavioral issues. The medications are similar as the underlying neuroanatomy and neurochemistry in people and pets is similar. Medications are not without risk and each patient needs to be evaluated on an individual basis to identify which medication would be best for that pet and realistic expectation of that medication.
