Co-owner and Director of Teacher Training, Kathryn Taron was a Division I long-distance runner who found yoga while on a quest to heal an injury. After completely recovering from the injury, she continued to cultivate her practice on the North Shore of Oahu and around the world. She understands the struggle to balance competitive drive with respect for the body's limits. She teaches yoga to empower others to engage in self-healing. During her classes, Kathryn focuses heavily on proper alignment and mindfully linking movements with breath. Co-owner, Lindsey Canaley discovered yoga 15 years ago via a VHS workout tape as a teenager in her native Los Angeles. After a personal practice for many years, she got the courage to step foot in a real yoga studio in DC in 2011 and fell in love all over again. She believes in a playful practice and tries not to take herself too seriously. At classes with Lindsey, you can expect high energy, creative flows with a little restorative yoga thrown in for a well-rounded sweat session on the mat. For her personal practice, she loves vinyasa, power, yin, and restorative yoga equally. Lindsey is a RYT-200 and completed her studies at Tranquil Space and her prenatal training at Mind the Mat. When not in the studio, she's probably snuggling her one-year-old daughter or one of her three kitties. This episode was originally inspired by the Fuse Ladder and how much we use it in the Alexandria studio, Impact Your Fitness. Mariska Breland, the creator of the Fuse Ladder, a patented 8 in 1 fitness apparatus, sat down with Jenn and Tara to discuss all of our favorite things about the Fuse Ladder. There are so many important topics brought up in this conversation between three women who view strength as more important than correct form and looking pretty in yoga poses. If you’re a trainer or rehab professional, you’ll hear from a leader in fitness for neurological conditions and if you want to upgrade your studio or home gym for distanced sessions, this episode will give you an opportunity to learn more about how Jenn and Mariska have been thriving with the Fuse Ladder. A little bit about our guest and co-host: After overcoming MS and multiple injuries, Mariska had to swap running for pilates and yoga. She had been teaching since 2003, but her signature style, Fuse Pilates, was coined in 2005. Despite her background in neuroscience and passion for neuro physical therapy, life continued to push Mariska towards fitness and changing people’s lives in the pilates scene. Her favorite workouts combine gymnastics, strength training, and pilates. She also swears by using the Fuse Ladder! Tara began teaching Pilates mat classes in 2012 and completed her comprehensive apparatus training through Power Pilates in the summer of 2016. Ever the student, she still takes weekly lessons with senior teachers, and has attended continuing education workshops with Anula Maiberg, Andrea Maida, Benjamin Degenhardt, Blossom Crawford, and Bob Liekens, among others. Also an avid yogini, Tara completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training at Tranquil Space (now YogaWorks) in 2018 and is a registered yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance and is known for her warm and playful nature. Topics discussed: Limitations of yoga and pilates for improving bone health, posture and overall strength Avoiding injury as a yogi Utilizing the ladder for power, flexibility & corrective exercise Feeling empowered by pull ups Not allowing medical status or age determine your fitness level Using this as a pilates system and a fitness system Working with spring tension vs other types of resistance Misconceptions about balance training Working online and growing a training business Check out our guest and co-host: https://www.mariskabreland.com/about https://www.instagram.com/mariskabreland/ https://www.instagram.com/fuseladder/ https://www.instagram.com/theneurostudio/ https://www.thinkfitbefitpodcast.com/pilates-for-every-body/ https://www.instagram.com/tararose224/ Jenn's practice in Alexandria Virginia- Holistic injury care and performance wellness Jenn's instagram and twitter SHARE insights, aha moments, and favorite quotes on your social media. “Physical fitness can neither be achieved by wishful thinking nor outright purchase.” Joseph Pilates The goal of today's short episode is to present the theory that Pilates, the modality and man, have a lot more to offer than ab exercises and helping lower back pain. Jenn is bringing on her Pilates teacher, Tara Becker, for a presentation on a whole-body approach to Pilates and why every single person can use it in their fitness program. Tara Becker discovered Pilates in the early 2000s while studying at Syracuse University. Having undergone three reconstructive foot surgeries as a teenager, she was impressed with the way Pilates safely strengthened her whole body while helping her feet. As a former gymnast, she also loved how Pilates combined strength and flexibility on different apparatus. The Story Behind Shape Soiree with Kelly Kostecki and AnnMarie Grohs. In this week's edition of Tranquility du Jour, we chat about their inspiration to pull together a 3-day event in Richmond to shape lives, the importance of self-care, helpful tips and resources for finding balance. Direct download: Tranquility du Jour #406: The Story Behind Shape Soiree Featured Guest: Kelly Kosteki + AnnMarie Grohs Born and raised in the Heartland, Kelly grew up an Indiana Hoosier with a love for all things sports, travel, and school. The thrill of adventure and lure of new cultures soon led Kelly away from her Midwestern roots to soak up the sun and Southern hospitality of the South Carolina Low Country. It was there, while competing as an Athlete at the College of Charleston that her drive for peak physical performance led to injury and she first found herself on a yoga mat. Admittedly, at first, yoga was simply a way to ease and loosen her overworked and burned out muscles. However, soon she was overtaken by the stillness awakened in her mind and the spiritual connection encountered by her heart, which ultimately hooked her for life. Since those early years Kelly has kept her passion for the practice as a focal point in her life, allowing it to shape the very essence of who she is, what she loves, and how she gives back to her community. Her continued deep devotion and belief in the transformational power yoga provides, eventually led Kelly to receive her 500 hour RYT from Tranquil Space in Washington, DC, the home of all things goddess and glitter. She then went onto open her own yoga studio, Om On Yoga, in Richmond, VA in 2010. Through this venture, Kelly is deeply honored to share her experience and provide a nurturing space that offers a warm and inviting community to those who yearn for the beauty of yoga in their lives. Kelly is also the creator of Shop Om On, a hip online boutique offering consciously curated fashion and goods for the active and holistic lifestyle. When she’s not on her mat, a Raspberry colored Manduka to be exact, Kelly can be found globetrotting to far off and sometimes exotic but mostly laid back destinations, burrowing deep in a good book, relishing in the quiet solace of the outdoors, or savoring the pure goodness of a great acoustic guitarist. Richmond, Virginia is where Kelly calls home. She lives there with her incredible husband, and fellow yogi, Ken, and her sassy Schnauzer, Miss Gracie Mae. AnnMaire Grohs ran her first 10k in college. And she came in dead last – behind a team of 8 people carrying a Santa sleigh. AnnMarie Ever since then, AnnMarie has challenged herself to do better - to do more – always striving for one goal: wellness. And to never again be bested by a gaggle of people carrying a large prop. AnnMaire’s journey to wellness has taken her many places – to Chicago where she learned to appreciate the outdoors when she could; to D.C. where she learned the limits of – and ways – to challenge her body; and to Richmond where she learned the effect that food could have on her overall. It all ultimately drove her to open Boho Cycle studio, a Richmond, Va.-based indoor cycling studio focusing on fitness, nutrition, and health. Today, AnnMarie continues to explore her commitment to wellness, keenly aware that wellness isn’t a fraction of life: it’s the whole of it. “The most important thing is fun,” she says. “You’ve got to have fun - and know what does your body good: whether that’s a run, a salad, yoga, reading a book, or knowing what clothes look good on your body.” And AnnMarie continues her wellness journey. She still partakes of all the foods she loves – in moderation – and is aware that she’s constantly evolving. What worked for her 10 years ago may not work for her today – or 10 years from now. But she’s committed to sharing that journey and knowledge. And she hasn’t been beaten by a team of people carrying Santa’s sleigh again. Yet. Kimberly started her yoga practice in her fourth floor walk up in Washington, DC. in June of 2000. After ten years, she sought out new challenges. Kimberly got her masters degree in social work. More recently, she came across a flyer advertising a veterinary social work certificate. She recognized this serendipitous moment as her next calling. Kimberly is currently studying for her veterinary social work certificate. Q & A Why is self love so important? Because love starts from within. If we don’t have it, we can’t give it. What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? I would say the one thing holding me back was a lot of self judgement or “shoulds.” Who is one person who has changed your life for the better? My grandmother. She was incredibly optimistic, despite difficulties. What is the best advice you have ever received? “Let it go.” What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Baths. Especially this time of year. I sprinkle in a little bit of sweet almond oil. Do you have a favorite quote? “Spend the days the way you want to spend your life.” Annie Dillard. Can you share with us a resource or an app that we can use to help our own self care practice grow? Laura Vanderkam, who wrote 168 Hours, has a downloadable spreadsheet to help you examine where your time is going. What book are you reading right now? If the Budda Got Stuck, by Charlotte Kasl What is the one thing that you are most passionate about? Garth Brooks. I’ve been to 13 of his concerts. And pigs. I’m kind of obsessed with pigs. Guest Bio Kimberly Wilson is a writer, therapist, and creative entrepreneur who founded Tranquil Space—named among the top 25 yoga studios in the world, designs the eco-friendly clothing line TranquiliT, and holds master’s in women’s studies and social work.
