I've always been fascinated by brain health—how we think, feel, and function is deeply tied to how we live our lives. And yet, for so long, cognitive decline has been framed as an inevitable part of ageing. But what if that's not the full story? In this Live Well, Be Well episode, I sit down with two of the world's leading neurologists, Drs. Dean and Ayesha Sherzai to explore the cutting-edge science of brain health, neuroplasticity, and longevity. Their work is revolutionising our understanding of how we can actively shape our cognitive future—and the truth is, we have far more control than we think. We get into:✔️ The myth of brain ageing—why decline isn't inevitable and how we can strengthen our cognition at any age.✔️ The power of neuroplasticity—how small daily habits can rewire the brain for better focus, memory, and resilience.✔️The sleep-brain connection. Why deep sleep is the ultimate detox and the number one factor for long-term cognitive health.✔️Food as medicine for the brain—how the MIND Diet has been shown to reduce Alzheimer's risk by over 50%.✔️The real impact of stress on cognition—and how we can train our brains to handle pressure more effectively.✔️The attention crisis—how social media and technology are rewiring our minds and what we can do to regain control.Drs. Dean and Ayesha Sherzai are co-directors of the Alzheimer's Prevention Program at Loma Linda University and the authors of The Alzheimer's Solution. Their research proves that up to 80% of dementia cases could be prevented—and in this episode, they share the simple but powerful changes we can all make today to build a healthier, sharper brain for life. This conversation really shifted the way I think about my brain health, and I hope it does the same for you. If you found this episode valuable, please share it—and as always, let me know your thoughts.Connect with Dr. Dean & Dr. Ayesha Sherzai:
Doctors Ayesha and Dean Sherzai founded the Healthy Minds Initiative (HMI) to scale their impact on the tragic epidemic of dementia plaguing the world today. The first thing that we have to understand is that the majority of dementias are preventable through diet and lifestyle. The Sherzai's acronym NEURO—nutrition, exercise, unwinding, restorative sleep, and optimization—encapsulates the pillars that can determine our cognitive trajectory as we age. Second, individual behavior change is hard. And it's especially hard when the community norms are unhealthy.Third, traditionally underserved and marginalized communities are bearing the brunt of the damage and ensuing tragic consequences. And fourth, circling around, those communities can actually become leaders in the public health crusade against toxic lifestyles, since their empowerment can become the solution. HMI exists to empower communities to spread both the message and practice of lifestyle medicine. But in order to do that, the Sherzai's and their partners can't come in as experts. Instead, they approach as curious partners, willing to learn, and willing to stick around and provide support for the long term, and not just until the latest research grant runs out. In our conversation, we talk about the need for systemic change in research models that prioritize community engagement and sustainability. And we talk about what sustainable progress looks like, and can look like—in other words, a blueprint for community engagement and empowerment that can create a grassroots, decentralized, democratic health movement.LinksThe Healthy Minds InitiativeThe Brain DocsNourishing Our Brains and Preventing Dementia with Ayesha Sherzai, MD: PYP 279The Role of Science in Public Discourse and Racial Justice: Dean and Ayesha Sherzai, MDs: PYP 414The Alzheimer's Solution, by Drs Ayesha and Dean SherzaiThe 30-Day Alzheimer's Solution: The Definitive Food and Lifestyle Guide to Preventing Cognitive Decline, by Drs Ayesha and Dean Sherzai
In this episode, Dr. Jessica Steier and Dr. Sarah Scheinman are joined by Dr. Ayesha Sherzai to explore brain health, with a focus on dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The scientists address common misconceptions and examine evidence-based approaches to cognitive health, including the role of nutrition, supplements, and music therapy. They debunk popular myths about brain usage and detoxification while emphasizing the importance of engaging in meaningful activities for cognitive resilience. Throughout the conversation, the experts highlight the intimate connection between brain health and overall well-being, providing listeners with reliable information to counter widespread misinformation in this field. In this episode, we're take a closer look at one of the top fears we have about aging – cognitive decline and specifically, Alzheimer's disease.Unlike mobility issues or cancer that affects what you can do, Alzheimer's is a disease that robs you of your very identity.Alarmingly, an estimated 6.9 million Americans over the age of 65 are living with the disease, and 2/3 are women.Fortunately, you don't have to leave your risk of developing Alzheimer's to chance. While there are non-modifiable risk factors like age, genetics, and sex, there are many modifiable risk factors that can reduce your risk by up to 90 percent. The key is to approach it like a game a chess - not checkers - and look five or six steps ahead because the disease process starts 20-30 years before the onset of symptoms like memory loss.Based on the latest research, I've identified 8 essential habits you can adopt for optimal brain health. The book I reference in this episode are: "The Alzheimer's Solution" by Dean & Ayesha Sherzai, MD, and "The End of Alzheimer's" by Dale Bredesen, MD.If you want to maintain a sharp, healthy brain well into your 80s and beyond, this is an episode you're going to want to listen to from beginning to end. As a progressive neurodegenerative disease, it not only robs individuals of their cognitive abilities but also places an immense emotional and economic burden on caregivers. Mechanistically, the causes of Alzheimer's are incredibly complex and not fully understood. And in terms of treatment, the landscape appears challenging. Drug discovery efforts for dementias, including Alzheimer's, have faced setbacks, leaving a void in effective treatments. Consequently, attention has shifted toward preventive strategies, including dietary patterns. From a prevention standpoint, both genetics and lifestyle should be considered. Which throws up many interesting questions… To what extent do genetic factors contribute to Alzheimer's risk compared to lifestyle choices, and how does this interaction influence disease development? What role does lifestyle play in Alzheimer's risk, and is there evidence supporting the influence of specific nutrients on cognitive health? How do diet patterns impact Alzheimer's risk? Are there discernible risk differences associated with specific dietary choices, and how do these interact with genetic factors, such as the ApoE genotype? In this episode, Drs. Ayesha Sherzai and Dean Sherzai are on the podcast to answer these questions and discuss this topic in more depth. About The Guests: Dr. Ayesha Sherzai is a neurologist and co-director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Program at Loma Linda University, where she leads the Lifestyle Program for the Prevention of Neurological Diseases. She completed a dual training in Preventative Medicine and Neurology at Loma Linda University, and a fellowship in Vascular Neurology and Epidemiology at Columbia University. She is also a trained plant-based culinary artist. Dr. Dean Sherzai is co-director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Program at Loma Linda University. Dean trained in Neurology at Georgetown University School of Medicine, and completed fellowships in neurodegenerative diseases and dementia at the National Institutes of Health and UC San Diego. He also holds a PhD in Healthcare Leadership with a focus on community health from Andrews University.

In Episode #226, I'm joined by Drs Ayesha and Dean Sherzai to examine how exercise impacts brain health. We focus on two main considerations: what we know about the relationship between exercise and cognition, and how we can explain this relationship from an evolutionary lens. We discuss how movement impacts cognition, engaging your brain while exercising, and aging and brain health. We also cover neurogenesis, brain trauma, exercise and mood disorders, and motivation versus discipline. Drs Dean and Ayesha Sherzai are no strangers to The Proof Podcast. As community favourites, we've previously covered topics focusing predominantly on the relationship between nutrition, neurodegenerative disease, aging, and other factors of brain health. In today's episode, we step away from food to focus on the way exercise can impact our brain's functioning and health. Specifically, we discuss: Intro [0:00] Defining Exercise & Cognition [7:51] Studies on Exercise/ Brain Power [13:16] Normal vs Pathological Aging [16:34] Aging: What's Possible [22:30] Evolution of the Brain [27:31] Combining Thinking & Movement [42:23] Improving Brain Function [50:40] Mild Cognitive Impairment [58:27] Exercise for Brain Health [1:01:05] VO2 max & brain health [1:09:53] Danger of Exercise [1:12:36] Can you reverse pathology? Dr Ayesha and I talk about her childhood, her parents and grandparents being giants in the medical profession, how watching them surfing from Alzheimer's was a contributing factor to the desire to study the brain. It certainly was a point of interest for her personally on how the brain works, the functionality and if we can do anything about cognitive decline or if hereditary contributors meant if a person was to eventually suffer from the same fate or not. This is a personal conversation and a good look at the why behind a medical professional
Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, by 70%, and is the number one most costly disease - “It's not because its happening more often it's because of bad lifestyle and medications that prolong life but don't get rid of pathological processes that cause dementia so you have a whole lot of people living with this devastating disease.”This week we speak to THE ultimate brain-powered couple! Neuroscientists Dr Dean and Ayesha Sherzai are a phenomenal pair, aside from the impressive list of credentials after both of their names, they have dedicated their lives to behavioural change models and brain health initiatives. Co-director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Program at Loma Linda University, Dr Dean completed two fellowships at National Institutes of Health, and UC San Diego. He also has 2 masters degrees in clinical research and epidemiology, an executive leadership degree from Harvard Business School, and a PhD in Healthcare Leadership. And just when you thought that was already enough achievements for one person, in 2002, Dr Dean was asked by the World Bank to help lead their health delivery project in Afghanistan. While there, he was asked by President Karzai to become the Deputy Minister of Health and focused on bringing together all the stakeholders around the vision of rapid delivery of the basic package of health services and women's empowerment. This process was deemed by LANCET as the most successful plan in any post-conflict county. This plan also helped empower more than 20,000 Afghan women by making them the only source of health care in the most remote of communities. In 2013, he helped create the Afghan Health Initiative in order to empower the Afghan diaspora with their own health. Currently, along with his wife Dr. Ayesha, they are leading the largest community-based brain health initiative in the world through their online work in Brain Health Revolution.Dr. Ayesha, also a neurologist and co-director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Program at Loma Linda University, where she leads the Lifestyle Program for the Prevention of Neurological Diseases. Is also a trained plant-based culinary artist. She holds a master's in advanced sciences from UCSD. Subsequent to completing her residency Dr. Ayesha completed a fellowship in vascular neurology from Columbia University and is currently enrolled to finish a PhD in women's leadership. We think it's safe to say that when it comes to brains, these pair know what they are talking about!“There are good stresses and bad stresses. Bad stress is when you are involved in activities that are not driven by your purposes… you don't have a runway that is yours. Whereas good stress is based around activities that do drive your purpose… our brains are made to be active, it craves to be pushed and challenged around its purpose…”In this episode, we discuss lifestyle choices, nutrition, purpose, Alzheimers, dementia, food that fuel your brain, activities that fuel your brain and, the data to support it.It truly is an amazing episode we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!Lots of love,Dave & SteveTo learn more about Dr's Sherzai check out their website: https://teamsherzai.com/And their latest book: The 30 Day Alzheimer's SolutionsProduced by Sara Fawsitt and Sean Cahill See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Overdoses from synthetic opioids have sharply increased since the start of the pandemic. Crossover Physician Lead, Dr. Akbar Zikria, joins Dan to discuss effective and safe lifestyle medicine and pain management alternatives. While Akbar and his care team approach pain management from multiple angles–health coaching, mental health, and physical medicine—he also focuses on key lifestyle components for recovery and long term health—whole food, mindfulness, sleep, and movement. Personally, this approach has helped him recover faster as an athlete than he used to 15-20 years ago. He applies this experience and success to patients who see him for the pain they are in. Akbar shares how he can get to the root cause of the pain (injury, sports, stress, environment) and design a holistic treatment plan.Stick to the end to hear Akbar's favorite podcasts (grab a pen and take notes!), his vegan guilty pleasure, and his early morning healthy habit. “I want people to understand the importance of science. We live in a world now where there's a lot of mistrust, but I honestly believe that science is the only way out of all of the confusion and misinformation that exists. I'm not saying that science is perfect. We actually need to do science better, but science is integral to sorting through the world's problems.” - Simon Hill Welcome to The Fit Vegan Podcast, I'm your host, Luckie Sigouin! Today, I am speaking with Simon Hill as we bust vegan myths! From confusions about protein intake to iron-related myths, we are going to address all of that today. Simon Hill is a Physiotherapist and Nutritionist who is passionate about making nutritional information simple and accessible so that people can make informed decisions about the food they feed themselves and their families. In 2008, Simon completed a Bachelor of Physiotherapy and immediately began working as a Sports Physiotherapist in Melbourne both at a leading private practice and with professional AFL & VFL footballers. Over the years, however, Simon became increasingly curious about the role nutrition played in nourishing the body and preventing disease. By using his research skills developed during his honors degree, Simon dove deep into the available literature on nutrition & disease and soon became fascinated by the vast evidence out there that proved that simple lifestyle changes could help people prevent and sometimes even reverse many of the leading chronic diseases that plague the western world today. After undertaking a Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate and a post-graduate degree in Nutrition, Simon set up plantproof.com and began hosting world-renowned doctors and public figures, such as Neurologist's Dean & Ayesha Sherzai, MD, Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, MD, Dr. David Katz, MD, Environmental Researcher Nicholas Carter, Climate Scientist Dr. Jonathon Foley, and Ultra-Athlete Rich Roll on the Plant Proof podcast. In this episode, we cover [00:01 - 18:01] Life Events that Made Simon Go Plant-Based [18:02 - 37:40] The Importance of Science in Improving Public Health [37:41 - 44:47] Why You Don't Need Meat to Get Enough Iron [44:48 - 47:57] Dealing with Vitamin B12 Deficiency [47:58 - 01:00:56] Addressing Protein-Related Vegan Myths [01:00:57 - 01:08:53] Simon on Soy Consumption [01:08:54 - 01:14:30] Getting Enough Calcium on a Plant-Based Diet [01:14:31 - 01:24:42] Having Enough Omega-3 Without Eating Fish [01:24:43 - 01:27:47] Tackling the Confusion About Nitrate and Nitrite [01:27:48 - 01:34:10] Closing Segment Key Quotes “Unless you're eating a diet that has almost no diversity or a diet that is severely calorie- and protein-restricted, then you have absolutely no worries on a completely plant exclusive diet, that you will be consuming adequate amounts of all of those nine essential amino acids.” - Simon Hill “It's not as though you need to do some sort of creative accounting and calculation every meal to ensure that you have all nine essential amino acids in perfect amounts, it doesn't work like that. All you need to do is focus on consuming a plant-based diet that has a good amount of diversity – you're eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, lots of different colors, and you will be getting all of the amino acids that you require.” - Simon Hill “If you include soy in your diet, at levels that are in line with what traditional soy consumption is, whether you're female or male, it's a healthy inclusion in your diet. But at the same time, soy is also not a necessary component of a diet. So if for some reason you don't want to consume it, then there's a whole host of other plant-based foods that you can eat instead.” - Simon Hill “Focus on all of those different sorts of pillars and key nutrients and you'll give yourself the best chance of keeping strong, healthy bones.” - Simon Hill ...
Today on Live Life in Motion, I talk with Dr. Dean & Ayesha Sherzai. We dive deep into brain health. More specifically, how you can maintain and optimize your cognitive functionality and can prevent neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. Affectionately known as Team Sherzai, Ayesha & Dean are the highly credentialed co-directors of the Brain Health and Alzheimer's Prevention Program at Loma Linda University Medical Center, where they study all things brain health, with a particular focus on lifestyle interventions to prevent cognitive decline and neurodegeneration. Because Alzheimer's currently afflicts over 40 million people worldwide, I'm willing to bet most of you are directly or indirectly impacted by this affliction. The bad news is that there is currently no cure for Alzheimer's. And incidence is predicted to triple by 2050. What most don't realize, however, is that 90% of Alzheimer's cases can be prevented. In fact, through simple diet and lifestyle changes, the Sherzai's have experienced remarkable success in both preventing and significantly reversing the symptoms of Alzheimer's, dementia and cognitive decline in many of their patients, adding vibrant years to their lives. Team Sherzai, aka Dean and Ayesha, join me on the podcast to talk about the role of science and scientists in dealing with all the false statements propagated on social media (as well as, occasionally, traditional media). What the Sherzais value highly about science is the holy grail of falsifiability; the challenge that every theory and finding implicitly makes to other scientists: prove me wrong! They also appreciate the inherent humility that is baked into true science, as well as the imperfect nature of knowledge at any given time.
