Erica Olenski Johansen speaks up in Episode 52 about how burnout was the catalyst for change and advocacy for herself and her family. Being careful to balance the needs of herself with the needs of her family, Erica found herself to the arts of various kinds to engage her heart and mind. This passion became August s Artists so that other families experiencing medical traumas have what they need to express themselves in art and share it with one another and the world! A great lesson learned is that art is more naturally occurring when you protect boundaries that you ve set up. Erica has proven that self-care, advocacy, and servant leadership can not just help heal, but also help inspire and motivate meaningful industry change. After spending a career in healthcare, Erica found herself divorced from an alcoholic and supporting her infant son as his primary caregiver in his brain cancer recovery after being diagnosed at only 5-months-old. Despite the odds, Erica persevered through burnout and depression to become an Ironman in September 2021 and was recognized by the healthcare industry as a leading voice on patient and caregiver advocacy in March 2022. In Episode 50, Brooke Rozzi started her career with a young 20-something year old s mindset of wanting to just look good in a bikini and eating just right. After a sudden weight gain during the grieving of her father s death, she began asking why when she was doing all the right things. Feeling like her body was fighting against her, she pursued further education that opened her eyes to show her the importance of a lifestyle change on a microscale. A desire to have her daughter love the skin she s in led Brooke to look for someone to actually educate her about the beauty and complexity of the woman s body. Sometimes to move forward, you have to take a step back. Paying attention to her body s conversation with her about what felt good and what didn t, when she needed to rest and when she was ready to a workout. Trading a hard workout for a walk in the park or a yoga session, deleting food tracking apps from her phone, and working with her body instead of against it. Breath work and journaling and scaling back intense workouts were ultimately the trifecta of taking better care of her body and her mind. Brooke is a Functional Nutritionist specializing in Women's health. She is a Mom of two and has been in the health fitness industry for 14 years. After becoming a Mom, and through personal experiences with stress and the impacts it left on her body, she realized how unsupported women are in knowing what their body needs to feel good and how to achieve it to avoid burnout. Today's model is set up with a cyclical diet and exercise pattern, but it isn t set to serve what a Woman's body truly needs to thrive. She works within her coaching to change the narrative on how women approach their health and fitness so they can truly feel good in their skin, ditch the diet and exercise mentality, and live a life that they are feeling really good in. In episode 49, we learn more about Teresa Lodato s experience with burnout. The first thing we need to know is that burnout isn t a specific point in time, but is really kind of a slow burn until you hit the breaking point. Next realize that your identity isn t tied up in a title of a role you play in life, because they are really just masks for who you really are without those titles. Then you need to live in alignment with those truths about who you are and the boundaries that allow you to live out of that core identity to fulfill the roles you have. Healthy boundaries, forgiveness, recognizing capacity to handle and letting go those things that you can t and doing all of that with acceptance and not holding grudges against people or your own body and mind are critical to living in a spirit of freedom and joy and gratitude. Doing all of of these things, living inside your body s budget, is a wonderful way to not end up burned out and exhausted on a regular cycle. In Episode 44, Jinnie Lee Schmid joins us to talk about how just pushing through isn t really the best way to deal with burnout, because they start coming with hard crashes, too. The key to avoiding the crashes before the burnouts is learning one s cycle of emotional well-being. Feelings of being overwhelmed, finding yourself distracted more easily, or getting brain fog are all signs of impending burnout. The best prevention to burnout is to just unplug from expectations and take a break. Having accountability with other people to be able to celebrate what s going well or scream about what s going wrong or talking through things that are red flags of burnout. Burnout doesn t have to just show up in the workplace, but also in just every day life. Grief and burnout can go hand in hand. Both can happen with any kind of change or loss. It can be a sad occurrence or one that is actually exciting. Grief is easier to walk through than it is to spend years trying to avoid it. This healing begins with making a list of life experiences, so you can see just how much change you ve endured and recognize just how many emotional challenges you ve encounted in your life. Your whole life experience impacts your right now life experience. Routine use of coping skills are very different than reactive use of coping mechanisms. One helps you to heal. The other will only keep you reeling. Jinnie has experienced about as much change, loss, and grief as anyone can imagine, most of it by the time she graduated college. But she perfected "Academy Award Recovery" at an early age and powered her way through a long, successful career as a corporate consultant and entrepreneur. After the most important person in her life died, she struggled through nine months of debilitating grief that threatened her business and her marriage. Then she finally discovered The Grief Recovery Method and her purpose and calling became clear. Now she coaches high-performing women leaders who have too much at stake to stay stuck, helping them to recover from their past, release their grief, and reclaim their freedom to thrive! She lives in Atlanta, GA with her husband (same one!) and a revolving menagerie of rescue cats and dogs. Episode 40 brings us Adele Wang talking about how she grew up in a culture of just being successful created a lifestyle of chronic burnout. Her burnout truly came from a place of disconnection. Feeling lonely in the middle of a crowd. And how sometimes you need to stop looking for how to relieve the burnout, which is just a bandaid. Instead you need to recognize the source of the burnout so that you can reignite it and come back to living. Because we live in a culture of self sufficiency, people are burning out because they lack community. We need people to sit with us in the dark and just lament alongside us and not immediately jump into solutions to the heartache. Burnout is a lot about the I don t know and I m really scared . Resolution isn t always about making major life changes and instead sitting in the curiosity of what s really going on in the heart and mind and body. Look for community. If the problem is loneliness and isolation, then how do you solve that on your own? In episode 39, Michelle Perry explains how burnout really looked like being overwhelmed and unsure and not having the vocabulary to describe it. The move to corporate America was a reprieve from the overwhelming world of social work and poor health and being overweight and not knowing what to do with any of it. When she started to tell herself the truth about how she treated herself and what she believed about herself, then she also began to understand where she came from and where she was going and knew better how to prevent another season of burnout coming. Because she grew up in a culture of serving others, she had to also understand that she needed to serve herself, too, in order to serve others to the best capacity. Prevention of burnout is key. Feeling tension, irritability, checking out of reality are all red flags that burnout is on its way. Preparing and preventing burnout are best accomplished with cultivating a lifestyle of gratitude. Sometimes that gratitude starts with just being alive and then you start paying attention to the things that are going well and that will help you develop a lifestyle of thankfulness. What you pay attention to is what happens to you. Michelle L. Perry established herself as a subject matter expert over the course of her career as a clinical social worker in the field of child welfare that spanned over 20 years. She then transitioned into the corporate world where her leadership, training, and coaching skills were refined, producing results in all that she works with. As an Awareness Coach/Consultant/Strategist, Podcast Host, Speaker, International Best-Selling Author, and Online Course Creator, Michelle contributes to the journey of others by equipping and supporting them to see results, and experience an increase in confidence and momentum in their lives. Being a mom AND a helping professional, you simply must build in time for rest and recreation! In Episode 35, Paige Mitchell shares with us her journey from burnout to thriving. From very young, she knew that knowing people s stories and struggles drew her interest and fed her desire to serve and help others along their journey. After so many years in the field, she realized that she had been setting aside her own needs and desires. 10 years in, it was clear that her heart and mind had been neglected as she cared for everyone else besides herself. Is this life sustainable? became the question that was asked, and the answer was a very clear, no. Making the switch between counseling and coaching was the first active step in her healing. Paige earned her Masters in Counseling and has over 10 years experience in the mental health field. Her strong background in clinical psychology over the years has helped her make the switch from therapist to coach as she implements strategies that help people become more accountable and start taking action now, no matter how small. In episode 33, Sarah Alysse Rosner shares how she bounces back from starting adulthood already burned out. Burnout stemmed from unrealistic expectations she put on herself, which started from her early days in theater. Sarah set herself up to recover by feeding her mind and body affirmations and intentions. In the corporate world, she discovered that people were craving connection and that a lot of burnout comes from a place of isolation and need of physical exercise. Sarah focuses on stress management, movement, and nutrition to help others find their way out of burnout. Physical health can be an indicator of emotional and mental health. It s important to listen to the cues your body gives you to prevent burnout. Sarah stresses the importance of recognizing what constant hunger or a state of not being hungry or craving unhealthy foods and what those symptoms might indicate about your mental health. Movement is the other large piece of her strategy. Whether it s a walk in the park or climbing the stairs or yoga or pilates or biking, moving for just a few minutes a few times a day stimulates the body and brain to a healthier place. Sarah also emphasizes taking a break a few times a day. Get away from screens, play with kids, watch the dog play, or do something creative, but do it with intentionality and without interruption. Sarah Alysse Rosner is a corporate stress management coach that helps companies cultivate a low-stress environment so that their employees can be happier and more productive. She s the creator and CEO of Live Well Enhance You LLC which formed out of a need for her Pilates clients to find balance in their lives. She branched into the corporate market to assist employees in creating out-of-the-box solutions. She utilizes her BFA Musical Theater Performance background to coach others on how to be confident and understand the connection between the brain and body. Spanning over a decade, Sarah has collected an abundance of certifications from Integrative Institute of Nutrition, STOTT Pilates, to National Academy of Sports Medicine. She s been featured on WGN Living Healthy WGN Around Town s segment as a Stress Management Expert. Also, she has been promoted on Business Insider, Yahoo Finance, Authority, Brainz Magazine, Kivo Daily, LA Wire, The Chicago Journal, NY Wire, NY Weekly, IdeaMensch, and US Reporter. Living in a constant state of burnout was normal and even celebrated. Feeling disconnected from the world around her and the people she was surrounded by from day to day. Multitasking became a great distraction from the distress her mind was really in, which kept the fires of burnout burning. Relationships became the barometer of her heart and mind. Her specialties lie in communication, boundary setting, distress tolerance, forgiveness (self and others) and cognitive reframe and empowerment.
