The Hearing Architecture podcast, proudly sponsored by Brickworks, presents Again and Again and Again, a mini-series hosted by Hilary Duff. Each week we bring you interviews and conversations as we seek better ways to understand, harness and deploy the expertise and knowledge of professionals currently within the design community, at home and abroad. Our guests are all experts on circularity within the building industry and share the aim to display that waste is not an accident, but the consequence of decisions made at the design stage. Here is our opportunity. We as designers have an opportunity to do better. Going from a linear to a circular mindset requires a huge transformation in the built environment and can only be successful with an innovative approach and through partnerships for change. In this episode I meet with an individual who offers both and operates at the periphery of the built industry. Siddharth Hande a Data Scientist and Social Entrepreneur and is founder and CEO of Kabadiwalla Connect. His organisation is working to transform the informal waste supply-chain in cities in the Global South, including his own hometown of Chennai, India. His location and subject of investigation might appear foreign at first, both geographically and in its analysis of industry not specific to architecture. But Sid is considering the circular economic paradigm from a global perspective, and is proving that circular solutions based on data do have an application to a much boarder context. Sid studied in Australia, at my university no less. But I first crossed paths with Sid at the UIA international Congress of Architecture in Copenhagen in July 2023 when I saw a presentation Sid gave on the Circular Economic perspectives and data-driven social change. In our conversation today, we discuss what this fascinating organisation is doing in Asia, and how he is spreading the word abroad. I learned about the current informal waste supply-chain in cities such as Chennai.  And how Kabadiwala Connect is integrating informal actors into the formal waste management system; to deliver low-cost and low-carbon, waste management solutions that cities in the Global South need to support their growing economies and populations. This has been Again&Again&Again, a mini-series of Hearing Architecture, proudly sponsored by Brickworks, made possible with the support of the Alastair Swayn Foundation. This episode was recorded during a period of residency with the Danish Arts Association in Copenhagen. Thank you so much for listening and thank you to our international guest Siddharth Hande of Kabadiwala Connect. Thank you for identifying how bottom-up systems can be a success and how a city might leverage existing informal infrastructure and urban actors into an innovative movement.  Let's watch this space and we look forward to speaking with you again in the future. Our guests are all experts on circularity within the building industry and share the aim to display that waste is not an accident but the consequence of decisions made at the design stage. Here is our opportunity. We, as designers, have an opportunity to do better. The larger and more complex the world becomes, the better architecture is needed. Architecture can no longer be satisfied with uniting form and function. It must address and embrace a much larger number of considerations from aesthetics, to function, to climate, health and energy. At the same time, the project's finances, law and time must be respected. In this episode we speak with Lene Damsbo Brix of Matter by Brix, and founder and partner of Circle Bank. A talented and driven Copenhagen – based force; Lene is grappling with these conundrums.  Lene is an architect by training with over 25 years of experience in the architectural and construction sector, including working at a number of well-known practices which now are celebrated for their design agenda revolving around circularity. But after years at the desk, Lene has stepped away from the tools to focus on systems and process's that can begin to help with the industry's transition toward circularity.  Today Lene and I discuss the Circle Bank project and it's important goals in creating a digital platform that integrates new knowledge through the process of scanning, demolition, material handling and architectural design. We dive into the detail of the tool and platform explore the grand ambition of the organisation: that By 2030, circular construction has outcompeted linear construction. Our guests are all experts on circularity within the building industry and share the aim to display that waste is not an accident, but the consequence of decisions made at the design stage. Here is our opportunity. We as designers have an opportunity to do better. The construction, operation, and maintenance of buildings account for almost 30% of the globe's carbon emissions and 40% of global energy consumption. This current way of practice is unacceptable, unsustainable, and misaligned with climate reduction targets. Our current model of architecture makes these problems worse.  However, it also gives the architectural community a huge opportunity for impact and with a significant portion of new construction taking place in urban environments, cities have a role to play in encouraging sustainable construction methods and creating a market demand for low-carbon and bio-based materials. Enter this week's guest; Peter Vangsbo, Associate Director for Climate and Sustainable Services at Arup. Peter leads the Circular Cities Services the Arup Copenhagen office. As part of the Nordic leadership team, he provides deep expertise in the areas of circular systems, decarbonisation, resilience, and climate change.  His home city of Copenhagen is a locale often touted as being a hotbed of progressive, sustainable thinking, and of wide-spread design understanding and appreciation. This is something I saw and experienced first-hand during my visit, where an average apartment was just as likely to feature an PH5 Henningsen lamp as they are an Ikea piece. It's a city where city residents can swim in the harbour within the centre of the city, and visit, hike up or even ski down the envelope of the infrastructure facility that processes their household waste (Google CopenHill by BIG if you don't know what I am talking about). The urban setting of Copenhagen is like no other. Peter has experience working on large urban and infrastructure projects and has experienced success in championing low-carbon construction, efficient reuse of resources, and the specification of biobased materials. I was interested in speaking with Peter to understand when working on large-scale and vital city infrastructure, how public and private sectors can interact and how he has managed to focus conversations and processes around these green and self-proclaimed ‘radical' initiatives. We discuss aspects of business model innovation, finance and funding, governance and policy, locality-based sustainability goals, and how to use data to prove the benefit of sustainability against the feasibility targets so often aimed for in business.  We query the market barriers to accelerating the use of biobased building materials and how low-carbon construction needs to invest more in alternative building materials and we call upon industry leaders and city policymakers to make tackling embodied emissions a priority. We discuss the exhibition spring that has sprung in Iceland with a couple of exciting solo exhibitions having opened in Kling & Bang; Andri Björgvinsson and Tara & Silla and the National Gallery; Anna Rún Tryggvadóttir, Þóra Sigurðardóttir and the new iteration of Steina Vasulka's Borealis Installation from 1993 now on display. Heiðar Kári @hkrannversson is an independent curator, art historian and most recently he held a position at the Nordatlantens Brygge in Kobenhavn 2018 - 2022.  He has curated multiple shows across Iceland; The Living Art Museum, the National Gallery and for the Icelandic Art Center. In the episode his most recent exhibitions and projects were discussed including:  Sóley Ragnarsdóttir @soleygendary is a Danish/Icelandic artist that lives and works in Thy, Denmark. Ragnarsdóttir has a sculptural approach to painting, and her works, painted and ornamented with both synthetic and organic materials, hover between figuration and abstraction. She mixes acrylic and epoxy with shells, amber and sea-sanded shards of glass on surfaces of wood, canvas and napkins. Her solo exhibition “Queen of Hearts” curated by HK  is now on display at Gerðarsafn. Þór Vigfússon @arslonga_djupivogur is an artist that lives and works in Iceland. He creates powerful objects with colour, texture, and reflection using prefabricated industrial materials. His deceptively simple works, primarily made of glass, plexiglass, mirrors, and Formica with monotone colour fields, push the boundaries between two- and three-dimensional works. Architecture and space play a vital role in their presentation. His solo exhibition “Numbers, Places” curated by HK is now on display at Gerðarsafn. Outside Looking In, Inside Looking Out is an exhibition that has been traveling around the world and will continue in the coming year with the stopa in Tokyo, Oslo and Paris this Autumn. The exhibition showcases works by established and emerging artists from Iceland. This exhibition project is a collaborative platform between the Icelandic Art Center, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Business Iceland, promoting visual art from Iceland abroad. This episode ends with the exhibition of the month segment which is dedicated to the one and only Venice Biennale and its 60th international art exhibition curated by Adriano Pedrosa. Special mentions from the main exhibition include Ahmed Umar's work “Talitin, The Third” (2023) and the Mataaho Collective's installation “Takapau” (2024). For the national pavilions Becky and Tinna briefly discussed the following; Pakui Hardware at the Lithuanian Pavilion, Eimear Walshe's installation at Ireland at Venice, the Nigerian Pavilion with a star-studded artist roaster, Canadian Pavilion's exhibition with Kapwani Kiwanga's installation, Archie Moore's installation at the Australian Pavilion curated by Ellie Buttrose and more! There are few things more Danish than the Bodega. Far from a local corner shop which might share the same name in other countries, a Bodega is the name for the traditional Danish corner bar. They're small, they're gritty, they're a bit rough, and they're overflowing with charm. Without fail one of the things most non-Nordics find captivating about the Nordic countries are their liberal approach to sex and the stunning beauty of their populations. It doesn't take long looking for information about Denmark before the beauty of Danish men and women comes up. In the last few years there have even been some very widely viewed TV commercials which tackled the topic, such as Speis' "Do it for Denmark" campaign. But, one thing that doesn't get mentioned much, despite Danes reputation as some of the most shameless and sexually well-rounded folks out there, is condoms and condom use. Though not a core part of this channel, I'm a huge advocate of safe sex, and of sex education. As part of that, one element of Danish culture that is quite disappointing, especially among my generation, is an overall casual approach to using condoms and practicing safe sex. Here's a look at some of the stats (source: http://sti.bmj.com/content/early/2015/01/21/sextrans-2014-051814.full ) "Results Response rate was 20.4%. Condoms were used at sexual debut by 69.9% of women and 62.3% of men, while 14.3% of women and 15.1% of men used no contraceptives at sexual debut. Half of the respondents used condom alone at the latest sexual encounter with a steady partner (women 51.8%, men 55.2%), while 10% used no contraceptives. Having a sexual encounter with a casual partner decreased the likelihood of using condoms (women 43.7%, men 49.5%) and increased the likelihood of using no contraceptives (women 14.8%, men 20.9%). Data on sexual behaviour characteristics showed only minor changes when weighted for non-response. Conclusions The findings call for interventions addressing the use of appropriate contraception at sexual debut and at last sexual encounter; this seems particularly important when the sexual partner is a casual partner." While this episode doesn't focus on the specifics of Condom usage. One thing I found quite interesting when first arriving in Denmark was how and where one goes about locating, shopping for, and purchasing condoms. After all, you see massive variations from country to country in the availability, range of options available, and approach to condom usage and it is, for many, an important consideration. So - to the Danes watching, I suppose my question for you in this episode is, where do YOU buy your condoms? If you're Danish hopefully you'll find this series interesting, a bit informative, and not too outlandishly offensive. In this episode, I attempt to dive into a very complex topic while still trying to keep things fairly brief. As usual, this likely is somewhat biased towards Copenhagen (and the other major cities) and may not be as completely applicable to more rural areas which tend to be more religious and practice religion differently (true in all countries), so do take that into consideration. When I graduated from Arizona State with my Bachelors there were three separate ceremonies all of which required I purchase and wear a maroon robe. I was initially skeptical of it all, choosing to only attend one, and thinking it was overhyped, a bit tacky, and ridiculous. But, later, I came to realize it offered a sense of closure and bookmarked the end of one chapter and the start of another. So, when it arrived in Copenhagen ready to attend the University of Copenhagen for my Master's nearly 4 years later, I expected that when I graduated from the 2 year program I'd have a similar ritual and experience - after all the University dates back to 1479 - only with more "old world" pomp and ceremony than we'd had back in Arizona. That's not quite what I got.... If you're Danish hopefully you'll find this series interesting, a bit informative, and not too outlandishly offensive. If you're a foreigner coming to Denmark, I hope this helps you build upon observations and insights the rest of us had to find out the hard way. Topics that will be covered include the Danish approach to nudity, how to make Danish friends, how to meet Danes, Danish manners, and even a look at Janteloven. Recycling cans and bottles is a huge issue in most countries. While major progress has been made, the vast majority of cans and bottles in countries around the world, particularly in the US, still end up in the trash. Denmark's solution? Make it financially worthwhile to recycle, and it's not just working - it's a stunning success. if you've ever seen locals leave bottles on the ground next to trash cans in Denmark, here's the reason why. If you're Danish hopefully you'll find this series interesting, a bit informative, and not too outlandishly offensive. There are rumors that I am constantly terrorizing Danes throughout Copenhagen - from the metro to the line at the super market. What am I doing you ask? Breaking the social norms and talking to strangers. Luckily, I'm American which gives me a get-out-of-jail free card ... and of course, I'm not-so-secretly convinced that the Danes actually love my gregarious antics. Denmark and its residents are a fascinating group. In this video series I'll be leveraging my observations and research to share with you insights into how to get the most of your interactions with the Danes and time in Denmark regardless the duration of your visit. One day or ten years - my goal is to share observations I've made from 5+ years living, studying, and working among the Danes. If you're Danish hopefully you'll find this series interesting, a bit informative, and not too outlandishly offensive. If you're a foreigner coming to Denmark, I hope this helps you build upon observations and insights the rest of us had to find out the hard way.
