Episode 141: In Conversation with Kurt Larson of Information Society Many people these days talk about having a yearly "bingo card" and in particular, what events they didn't have on their cards. Well, Brian and Sarah definitely didn't have "talking with the lead singer of Information Society" on their 2022 bingo card-- or any other year's card, for that matter! But it has, in fact, happened, and both Brian and Sarah are absolutely thrilled to bring you this special episode! Our hosts talked about Information Society's 1988 self-titled album over the course of two episodes back in July 2018. In this episode, they get to talk with Kurt himself about the making of the album, its release and reception, the music videos, and even get some answers to questions they posed aloud way back then. However, the conversation covers a great deal more than just that album. Kurt tells stories ranging from the band's very early days all the way up to the recording and release of their latest album, 2021's ODDfellows. And as cool as all of that sounds, there's even more to learn, as Brian and Sarah discovered from talking with Kurt. He explained the origins of digital sampling, the history of remixing, what record pulls are, and what Spatial Audio is. Kurt also shares his thoughts on Cleopatra Records as well as answering the question of whether streaming services ended the Loudness Wars. And there are plenty of non-music topics discussed as well! The three of them talk about work habits during lockdown, and Kurt shares stories about playing the first video games as well as the time he met Leonard Nimoy! (You knew there had to be Star Trek talk in here somewhere!) And, due to Brian putting his foot in his mouth by talking trash about 1970's muscle cars, Kurt shared a number of photos of the Plymouth he altered to look like a car from "Mad Max," which then featured in the 1990 video for "Think." Below is an advertisement for a car similar to Kurt's (or at least how Kurt's started off looking). He tells the story of what he did to alter the car and how the one in the ad below is for a 1971 model, but Kurt's car is from model year 1973.  Here's another picture of Kurt's highly customized Plymouth Sebring: The picture below elicits a rather shocked response from Brian and Sarah during the episode, as Kurt shows how close the film's promotional poster is to the photo he took back in 1990. It should be obvious by now that this episode is overflowing with entertaining and insightful conversation-- so what are you waiting for-- start listening immediately! On this weeks episode, we start by discussing the CPL playoffs. Pacific and Forge move to the finals and we ask what that means for the league and the clubs moving forward. We then talk about the surprising announcement of Jimmy Brennan leaving York United.  And finally, we discuss the ugly history of Kurt Larson's social media. With his past homophobic, misogynistic, racist and hateful posts we question his position of "Head of Content" for the leagues exclusive media partner and how it might be affecting what we see on TV. I'm your host, Pat Sweet. In this week's episode: The best of last week's AMA with Kurt Larson Announcements Very special announcement coming about going even deeper Results League Play Rodrigo Gattas scored the first hat-trick in league history. All in the first half. Canadian Championship Cavalry FC beating VWFC marks the first time a CanPL club has ever won against MLS competition. Both York 9 and the Wanderers could have advanced if not for defensive lapses For York, an errant back back and needless foul in the 18 gave away two goals in the first leg For Halifax, they were up 2-0 and let in two soft goals in the final leg. Overall, I think both York 9 and Halifax have a lot to be proud of. They fought hard, and took the game to their opposition. In the end, the difference was in the mistakes that were made. Cause may be inexperience as a squad, fatigue... who knows? As for Cavalry, the next tie against Montreal will be interesting. Montreal only won after being gifted all three goals. Cavalry will be real opposition for them. X factor: Ignatio Piatti is back with Montreal after recovering from a knee injury. If Piatti stays healthy, Cavalry will have to work hard to contain him. Really hope that this is part of growing pains. If you like the headlines, check out the Northern 90 Supporters Group! Next up - tackling the issue of game congestion.   Game Congestion in Canadian Premier League After Forge FC's dismantling of HFX Wanderers last Wednesday, coach Hart had some pretty blunt observations to share (courtesy of The Merchant Sailor): We know things we need to work on from an individual and collective perspective, but we have no time to work on it because you have to give players time to rest, and then you have maybe a half of a training session the day before you play a team like Cavalry–or any team. So we need to sit down and talk about it. The schedule is way too compact. There are three teams that play nine games this month and one that plays ten.” We've seen plenty of players go down to injury over the last several weeks, and the fall is just getting started. Hart isn't the first to raise a flag about fixture congestion. The concern also has some sound science behind it. A 2010 study in the American Journal of Sports Medicineinvestigated the effects of playing 2 matches per week compared to one The study showed no real impact on gameday performance, but didshow an injury rate over six times higher when playing two games a week. So if we can agree that injuring players is bad, what do we do? Three ideas Make the season longer Eliminate mid-week games Eliminate back-to-back midweek games Longer season Pros Keep the same number of games - no lost entertainment or revenue Improves rest Cons Risky to push earlier than end of April or past early November. Wet/ cold weather would be hard on players and on grass How to make it work Focus games on artificial surfaces MLS starts in March, ends in December, though with limited games in Canada Eliminate mid-week CanPL games Pros Only 4.4 midweek games per team - not much lost gameplay 24 week season with 28 season games Creates room for CanChamp Effect of reduced attendance is minimized - poor showing during the week anyway Makes for a more balanced schedule Cons Fewer games = less revenue, less entertainment Mitigation: maybe the weekend games would be even better attended Eliminate back-to-back midweek games If we eliminated two mid-week games for each team, you could eliminate, for the most part, teams playing on short rest twice in a row. Pros Minimal impact on the season Better rest Cons Fewer games   [caption id="attachment_577" align="aligncenter" width="934"]An analysis of rest between games for the CanPL 2019 season.[/caption] I'd like to know what you think: is the schedule a problem? How would you fix it? Write me to let me know! Next up, the mailbag: Mailbag You know how this works - you send me mail and messages and I read every single one of them. If what you send is extra good I read it on the podcast. Last week's question: What should the Canadian Championship and Canadian Premier League trophy be called? Lots of votes for the Voyageur's Cup - Alex and Febrian Michael Miller of the Premier Podcast suggested the CanPL trophy be called the Joe Kennaway Trophy. Look him up - very cool bit of Canadian soccer history Best suggestion I heard was from Jeff who wrote me an email suggesting: Can Champ: Voyageur's Cup CanPL Champion: Canadian Shield This week's question: Who's the best attacking duo in CanPL? What Separates the Best from the Rest Cavalry and Forge Used Subs Both teams used every available sub every game So did Valour Cavalry was the median for touches over 10 games 6291 for Cavs 5700 for FCE 6786 for Pacific Cavs picked their moments and hung on to the ball when they needed to Cavs and Forge middle of the pack for passing accuracy and passes completed Cavs: 78.3% accurate Forge: 77.8% Balancing tough balls with playing it safe Pacific FC had best accuracy (82.8%) and most passes completed (3962). Didn't help them. Cavalry had average chances created - middle of the pack at 77. York 9 was the best at 100 When you compare those chances to goals scored, Cavalry was best in the league with a 19.5% conversion rate. Better chances? Better shooting boots? Who knows. If what you send is extra good I read it on the podcast. Last week's question: How seriously should Forge FC take their CONCACAF League run? Ed (who wrote lots in the last week) said that Forge would sacrifice CONCACAF league in favour of league performance, citing brutal travel, fixture congestion, and a hostile environment. Colin also wrote to say that, while he'd love to see Forge make a push, it would be better to rotate the squad and secure a spot in the league final. Introduction This is the Northern 90 Podcast with Pat Sweet, Episode 11. Welcome to the Northern 90 Canadian Premier League Podcast, covering the beautiful game in the great white north. For more Canadian Premier League content, head over to Northern90.ca. That’s Northern Nine Zero dot ca. Welcome Hello, Canada, and welcome to the Northern 90 Canadian Premier League Podcast! This week, I'm giving a state of the union address, and will discuss where things stand with the league today, and what to look for as we near the very first CPL match on April 27. But before we get to the main content and the headlines, I wanted to share a contest I'm running to give away an authentic Canadian Premier League Jersey. CanPL Jersey Giveaway That's right, folks, you heard correctly: I'm giving away an authentic Canadian Premier League jersey. All you have to do is enter your name at Northern90.ca/jerseycontest and boom, you're in. You get to chose the jersey and the size and I take care of the rest. The contest opened on April 1 and will close at 11:45 PM EST April 12. The winner will be chosen by random draw. Once you get to the website, you'll see that there are ways of getting extra ballots so as to increase your chances of going home with your very own jersey. Just go to Northern90.ca/jerseycontest to enter. News In this week's headlines: In preseason action, Cavalry FC topped FC Edmonton 2-0. What's probably most interesting about this game is that FC Edmonton's Son Yongchan got two yellows and was ejected from the game. The coaches agreed, however, that since this was a preseason friendly, that Youngchan could be replaced so that it was still 11-a-side. Love the sportsmanship - very Canadian Also interesting to note that Edmonton Coach Jeff Paulus chalked Youngchan's two yellows to being used to a much more physical league in Korea. I imagine many players will have to adjust to the way the game is officiated here. As you've no doubt heard, the Canadian Men's National Team finished CONCACAF Nation's League qualifying with four wins, which qualifies them for both Gold Cup as well as League A in Nations League. Les Rouges were drawn into group A, along with the United States and Cuba. As I already aluded to, the league's kits will be unveiled on April 4, with local parties happening accross the country to stream the event. Most of the events are by invitation only, so just reach out to your own local supporter's group for details on that. The Sooke News Mirrorhad a fun piece on Pacific FC mascot tryouts. It's not official, but a dude dressed up as a panda got the most votes. Find a link to the video on the shownotes. Check it out at northern90.ca/join. Next up, the state of the CanPL Union. CanPL State of the Union In this segment, I'm going to do a bit of a roundup in preparation for the madness that will unfold over the next few weeks. I'll tell you about the most interesting things we know, what we're about to learn, the questions that have not been answered, and what I'm most excited about moving ahead. Things we know This is a very Canadian league, but with significant international influence Approximately 2/3 of the league is made of Canadians Almost 5% is from England, and almost 4% is from Trinidad and Tobago. Only Cavalry FC and HFX Wanderers have significant non-Canadian contingents. About 20% of Cavalry FC is from England and almost 24% of HFX Wanderers is from Trinidad and Tobago. No other team has more than 10% of their club coming from any single country, other than Canada. Mediapro can produce a solid soccer game Mediapro produced a recent Canadian Men's National Team game against French Guyana, and it was really quite good! The league can weather a couple slow years financially - the deal with Mediapro secures that. We know what the schedule will be like - apertura/ clausura format. Things we'll know soon Kits drop on April 4, and they promise to be excellent. Kurt Larson of the league's front office has promised that these will be the antithesis of boring MLS jerseys. How rosters will be filled out. There's still a lot of work to do - 128 players have been signed of a maximum of 161. Who the league's best players are. We know a lot about a few players, but not much about the vast majority. Things we still don't know How exactly we'll watch the games Mediapro has made noise about providing the games over the top, but the last CanMNT game was broadcast by TSN. What salaries and salary caps will look like. What other roster rules might be in place and how non-player assets might be traded or managed. Who the next teams will be - though there's been a lot of buzz about dealings in Quebec, and in Ottawa as well, with Dwayne Rollins reporting that discussions between Ottawa Fury and the league are basically not happening. Things I'm Excited About Game day, and experiencing the atmosphere, as well as the football. Seeing supporter's groups really take shape, sing songs, and start traditions. Seeing Canadians perform at their best Seeing new Canadians rise to prominence with the men's national team by virtue of having gotten minutes with CanPL teams. Hearing scores be read on the CBC morning news and discussing games around the water cooler at work. What do you think? If you've listened to the show, you know I love to hear from you guys - especially with this being my first episode featuring an interview. I'd love to know what you think of this deal. You can: Leave a comment at northern90.ca/episode11 Write to me at pat at northern90.ca Fire me a note on Twitter @northernninety Next up, the mailbag. Mailbag Some great messages and ideas this week to share with you. Colin wrote me through the contact form on the website thanking me for the show and supporting Canadian soccer - Colin, thank YOU for supporting me supporting Canadian soccer. Reddit user Keep-the-ball left on comment on Reddit about the last episode on under-the-radar signings, making the argument that Stephen Hart's strategy looks to be to have recruited Canadians who have experience overseas, and combining that with other established internationals, and that all this outside experience will serve the team well. And on Twitter, Fort MacMurray FC Edmontron Supporters are *very* excited about the jersey giveaway - thanks guys! Outroduction That's all we've got for the show today. Hello everyone,This week, I took some time to speak with Kurt Larson, a long-time player of Imperial Assault and FFG Star Wars miniatures games. If you haven't met Kurt or have any questions, I really encourage you to reach out to him. Long before I started playing Imperial Assault, he taught me how to play X-Wing at a beginners' event in Fargo, Minnesota. We’re 90 minutes (OK, maybe 120) away from MLS Cup dreams being harbored by just four teams. The Conference Semifinal second legs are days away, and folks are starting to get a little nervy. Is Jermaine Jones the key? Should Kevin Doyle start? Then, in Dallas with Seattle already up 3-0, it’s time to ponder how Coach Of the Year candidate Oscar Pareja can inspire his team emotionally and tactically.   Armando Cooper gets his name put in for a CONCACAF Camp counselor position, but who stands alone on top of the playoff heap? The derby talk rolls on as the guys discuss the historic RBNY vs. NYCFC match that gave Simon goose bumps on Sunday night. They touch on Jason Kreis' controversial subs, what ails NYCFC and the excellence of the Jesse Marsch’s side. In the other “Soccer Sunday” matchup, Toronto FC fell flat once again in a big moment on their home field. Toronto Sun beat writer Kurt Larson checks in from north of the border to narrow down what’s wrong and how to remedy things before the playoffs slip from sight. In the second segment, there’s a glut of big weekend results to pore over, including Mauro Diaz’s shining performance in Dallas’ victory against LA and Crew SC knocking off last years “Supporters' Shield” winners. The biggest goal of the weekend, though,  may have come via the head of Orlando City’s center back Aurelien Collin. He talks to the guys about what needs to change for Orlando, his new role with the Lions and the differences between fans and ambitions in Orlando and Kansas City. In the mailbag, the age-old question draws discussion: what is your favorite “Farby” in MLS? You know, a “farby,” a rivalry between two clubs far apart! Also the listeners have advice to get Simon and David to the Olympic games.

Tuesday ETRs only come around once in awhile, and this one is special for all the right reasons. First, Kurt Larson of the Toronto Sun joins to talk Toronto FC, who signed Jozy Altidore and Giovinco since the last time the guys gathered around the microphone. That's ... bloody big news, but not a bloody big deal this time around. But is it a good thing for MLS? Will Toronto FC actually make the playoffs? Altidore is on his way to Southern California, where the US national team is gathered for January camp. It's a welcome break from club life for Bobby Wood. Hear the 1860 Munich man describe how he got frozen out of the club. Could MLS be an option? Sure, says Wood. He just wants to enjoy the game again. In the mailbag, the guys find out what "Blond Door" is and run through reaction from Red Bulls fans who attended the infamous town hall.
