R.L. Stine is one of the best-selling children's authors in history, made famous by his “Goosebumps” and “Fear Street” books. For decades, he's kept a strict writing schedule, pumping out around 2,000 words (roughly 10 pages) each morning. More than 350 books later, he's sharing what he knows with a new book of writing advice called “There's Something Strange About My Brain: Writing Horror for Kids.” R.L. Stine joins Tom to talk about how growing up feeling like a fearful outsider inspired him to retreat in his room and write, how he accidentally ended up writing horror books for kids, and what his best advice is for young writers.

R.L. Stine, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff, recorded in the KPFA studios on September 22, 1995 during the book tour for the adult novel, “Superstitious.” On September 22, 1995, Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff had the chance to interview R.L. Stine in the KPFA studio about his first adult novel, Superstitious. At the time, both the first series of Fear Street and Goosebumps were still being written, and a 1990s Goosebumps TV series was yet to make its debut. R.L. Stine, who recently turned 80 years old, is often called the Stephen King of young adult and children's horror. With nearly 500 books under his belt alongside several film and TV adaptations, he is best known for two series and their later iterations, Fear Street and Goosebumps A new Goosebumps series recently completed its run on Disney+ and Hulu, and the film Zombie Town debuted in theaters in September 2023 and is now available on Hulu. He doesn't go into it in the interview, but along with his books written as R.L. Stine, he also write dozens of humor books for kids under the name Jovial Bob Stine. What he does talk about here is his writing process, his thoughts about the work he does, and how it appears his various children and young adult books have created lifelong readers and improved test scores in elementary and high schools across the country. To date, “Superstitious” is only one of four adult novels written by R.L. Stine. This interview was digitized, remastered and re-edited in November 2023 and has not been heard in over twenty five years.   The post From the Archive: R.L. R.L. Stine has been giving readers “Goosebumps” for over thirty years. At the age of 9, he stumbled across a typewriter in his attic. With that, his love of writing began. Stine released the first “Goosebumps” book in 1992 — and never stopped. He has since sold more than 400 million books and written over 300 spine-chilling and spooky “Goosebumps” books with page-turning plots and unforgettable creatures that keep middle-grade readers riveted. His newest Goosebump series released earlier this fall starting with Goosebumps: House of Shivers: #1: Scariest. Book. Ever. This week the patrons voted on a Goosebumps book. Are you ready to be terrified by a living dummy? Because if so... just get through the first 80% of this book and we'll get around to that eventually. Stine was not kidding when he said it was a night of the living dummy and it was our fault for not taking him very literally. Are you ready to see the Goosebumps mascot at play in his debut book? Because... I mean it happens... like right at the end. Look I didn't realize that the book we probably wanted to read was the second part. So instead you're getting Mr. Wood and you just have to live with it.  Mr. Wood is the Wish com version of Slappy much in the same way this book is the Wish com version of Night of the Living Dummy 2. This is the book you had at home when you asked your mom if you could get it. Stine was born on October 8, 1943[2] in Columbus, Ohio,[3] the son of Lewis Stine, a shipping clerk, and Anne Feinstein. He grew up in Bexley, Ohio.[4][5][6] He comes from a Jewish family. Stine began writing at age nine, when he found a typewriter in his attic, subsequently beginning to type stories and joke books.[7] According to the documentary Tales from the Crypt: From Comic Books to Television, R.L. Stine said that he remembered reading the popular/infamous Tales from the Crypt comic books when he was young and credited them as one of his inspirations. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts in English.[8] While at OSU, R. L. Stine edited the OSU humor magazine The Sundial for three out of his four years there.[2] He later moved to New York City to pursue his career as a writer.[4] Stine wrote dozens of humor books for kids under the name Jovial Bob Stine and created the humor magazine Bananas.[4] Bananas was written for teenagers and published by Scholastic Press for 72 issues between 1975 and 1984, plus various "Yearbooks" and paperback books. Stine was editor and responsible for much of the writing (other contributors included writers Robert Leighton, Suzanne Lord and Jane Samuels and artists Sam Viviano, Samuel B. Whitehead, Bob K. Taylor, Bryan Hendrix, Bill Basso, and Howard Cruse). Recurring features included "Hey – Lighten Up!", "It Never Fails!", "Phone Calls", "Joe" (a comic strip by John Holmstrom), "Phil Fly", "Don't You Wish...", "Doctor Duck", "The Teens of Ferret High", "First Date" (a comic strip by Alyse Newman), and "Ask Doctor Si N. Tific". In 1986, Stine wrote his first horror novel, called Blind Date.[9] He followed with many other novels, including The Babysitter, Beach House, Hit and Run, and The Girlfriend.[4] He was also the co-creator and head writer for the Nickelodeon children's television series Eureeka's Castle,[10] original episodes of which aired as part of the Nick Jr. programming block during the 1989–1995 seasons. In 1989, Stine started writing Fear Street books.[11] Before launching the Goosebumps series, Stine authored three humorous science fiction books in the Space Cadets series titled Jerks in Training, Bozos on Patrol, and Losers in Space.[12] In 1992, Stine and Parachute Press went on to launch Goosebumps.[4] Also produced was a Goosebumps TV series that ran for four seasons from 1995 to 1998[13] and three video games; Escape from HorrorLand, Attack of the Mutant[14] and Goosebumps HorrorLand.[15] In 1995, Stine's first novel targeted at adults, called Superstitious, was published.[16] He has since published three other adult-oriented novels: The Sitter, Eye Candy,[8] and Red Rain. There is no point in living anymore I want to take my life, I have no personality no hobby. Who am I. I want to die. I truly want to kill myself. $champagnesaucin --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
