Tune in as Shawn Murphy (Men Who Like Men Who Like Movies Podcast) rejoins the program to review and recap Color of Night, the 1994 erotic thriller that takes us on a wild and atmospheric ride with a color-blind psychiatrist who gets himself caught up in a murder mystery and a steamy affair simultaneously. An intense BTS feud that led to different cuts of this movie being released, drawing inspiration from giallo, the therapy group in the plot acting like a dysfunctional family, and 90s-era queer representation that's both progressive for its time and dated for our contemporary world comprise just a few of the subjects that get coverage in today's episode. Directed by Richard Rush, Color of Night stars Bruce Willis, Jane March, Rubén Blades, Lesley Ann Warren, Scott Bakula, Brad Dourif, Lance Henrikson, Kevin J. O'Connor, Andrew Lowery, Eriq La Salle, Jeff Corey, Kathleen Wilhoite, Shirley Knight, and Erick Avari. Conrad and Dan discover the 1995 sci-fi fantasy drama Powder cowering away in the oubliette basement and drag it whimpering into the sunlight to see if it's the sort of baby you want to immediately disown in the maternity ward, or a misunderstood marvel that's "too beautiful for this world". The tale of a mysterious young man with a whiter-than-white complexion who seems to have supernatural powers, Powder could be a religious allegory or a heartwarming fable. But given that its writer/director is Victor Salva and the narrative keeps having to take a backseat to unjustifiable flashes of male nudity, the film could have a wholly different agenda. It stars Sean Patrick Flanery, Lance Henrikson, Mary Steenburgen and none other than Jeff Goldblum... which is quite a cast... and features a sumptuous score from Jerry Goldsmith. But, crucially, is it any good? And can we separate the art from the artist? Find out! It's life in prison on a desert...followed by life in prison stranded on an exotic island that just happens to be right next to a desert? Sorry, the Mikes still haven't wrapped their heads around that one. The Mikes are talking No Escape from 1994, directed by Martin Campbell and starring the late Ray Liotta, Lance Henrikson, Stuart Wilson and Ernie Hudson. Listen in as Mike Butler and Mike Field talk about the many, many logistical questions that come into play while watching the film. How are some of these guys the worst of the worst prison has to offer? Where does the "bad" prisoner gang get all their matching black leather outfits and Halloween masks? Why is the mayor from Godzilla '97 running a prison state now? But between the gaps in logic, cheesy dialogue, and questionable cinematography and aesthetics that at times makes No Escape seem older than it is there is a lot to enjoy about this film. The performances are all solid, there is some interesting character backstory, the action is decent and it's cool to see Ray Liotta as a character free from the shackles that come from being Henry Hill in Goodfellas. So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for https://www.forgottencinemapodcast.com/ (Forgotten Cinema).

Happy holidays, everyone! 'Tis the season for merriment, goodwill to your fellow man, and watching people beat the living hell out of each other, or at least it is on “Physical Media Isn't Dead, It Just Smells Funny.” There's something in the air within the world of physical distribution. It seems that the time has come for balletic martial arts and high-octane action films to get their time to shine. On this month's episode, we have three labels and all of them have brought some of the greatest films featuring fast and furious fists and a symphony of squibs. New to the round-up this month we have 88 Films US, a label that specializes in martial arts films from the golden age of the medium. Their contribution is the workers' rights-infused Shaw Brothers film directed by legend Chang Cheh, Disciples of Shaolin, starring the charismatic Alexander Fu Sheng. Kino Lorber doubles down this month with Mei-Chun Chang's follow-up to the thoroughly entertaining Dynasty with Revenge of the Shogun Women, another collaboration with the 3-D Film Archive and their initiative to seemingly bring you eye-popping action whenever they can. Kino Lorber has also decided to grace us with an HD and 4K release of John Woo's American debut film, the 1993 film Hard Target, starring Jean Claude Van Damme's mullet and Wilford Brimley's Cajun accent (along with Jean Claude Van Damme and Wilford Brimley). For such an occasion I had the opportunity to sit down with CMCL PhD candidate and all-around lovely person Jessie Balzer to discuss what makes Jean Claude Van Damme compelling and just what is going on with Lance Henrikson's physical performance in this film. Finally, for my pick of the month, I swing back around to Criterion's November release of the staggering Once Upon a Time in China: The Complete Films boxset -- a must-own for anyone even vaguely interested in exploring the world of Hong Kong action cinema. Limber up and get ready for a month of grace, violence, and doves making welcome appearances into the frame. You can read the rest of the reviews over at the IU Cinema blog

Welcome Mutant Goons to our first week of Thanksgorging here on Slashers Podcast! This week Doug and Ade dive into Kathryn Bigelow's debut film Near Dark (1987). This film stars the amazing Bill Paxton, Lance Henrikson, and Jenette Goldstein, whom you may remember starred together in a little James Cameron film, Aliens. Cameron suggested that Bigelow throw in his actors for good measure, and boom, we have a vampire horror western which Doug finds reminiscent of Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects. The film also stars 80s favorite, Jenny Wright as Mae, the seductive vampiress, and Jason Patric's little brother Joshua John Miller as Homer. You may know Miller from his horror comedy The Final Girls, as he is now all grown up and no longer a creepy little vamp. Find out why we feel this film is unfairly compared with The Lost Boys, that, while totally butt-fucking awesome, is a completely different film both atmospherically and tonally. In addition, we discuss which vampires we'd like to be if they were real: Twilight vamps, Underworld vamps, Fright Night Vamps, From Dusk Till Dawn Vamps, Interview with the Vampire vamps, the list is endless! If you could be immortal, which would you choose? Give us a shout and let us know why on any of our platforms. The Force Fed Sci-Fi Movie Podcast

This week, we take look at the classic and franchise-setting film, The Terminator! We'll be discussing The Terminator movie cast, The Terminator special effects, the Nike shoes product placement in the film, our own The Terminator film review and rating, and more! So take a seat, listen to our podcast episode and/or read and learn about this legendary movie (and if you leave, you'll be terminated...jk). The Terminator Movie Cast and Director James Cameron as Director/Writer We've briefly discussed James Cameron here at Force Fed Sci-Fi before when we discussed and reviewed Strange Days, which Cameron wrote. However, The Terminator was his directorial debut. And for his directorial debut, Cameron was beyond successful. Of course, we'll talk about the legacy a bit later, but we all know this first film spawned a globally known franchise. Arnold Schwarzeneggar as the Terminator / T-800 / "model 101" It may be safe to say that this movie helped Schwarzeneggar reach global fame while his previous film Conan the Barbarian was more of a break-through role. It's interesting to think as to why his terminator role raised his stardom. While it did help that this film was praised for its special effects, why did a part with little emotion and only 17 to 18 lines make Arnold famous? Prior to selecting Schwarzeneggar as the title role, Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone were in line to receive the part. In fact, Cameron wanted OJ simpson to be the terminator but decided against it (ironically) because he felt OJ could not convey a convincing killer. Schwarzeneggar was actually considered for the role of Kyle Reese first, but it's probably a good thing that his role switched due to Cameron wanting someone bigger and intimidating playing the role (kind of a no-brainer in our opinion). His ability to play such a brutal and murdering cybernetic robot with no emotion was excellent and well portrayed. Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese We weren't too familiar with Biehn's filmography prior to The Terminator. With that being said, we think he did a pretty good job executing the role of Reese. What we were intrigued about was casting someone who had more smarts to fight the terminator rather than another body builder. In addition, he's a kind of a scrawny guy. As we talked and thought about it more, you wonder how much actors like Schwarzeneggar and Stallone influenced roles of villains and superheros. Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor Hamilton does a great job playing Connor, who's arc is the most interesting, but doesn't reveal itself until close to the end of the film. For most of the movie, she's an unassuming and almost damsel in distress of a character. She doesn't believe in herself which makes her doubt Reese's story of her raising the leader of a future resistance. Maybe it's because the terminator has closed in on her and is about to take her life, but she musters up a lot of courage to start fighting back, even yells at Reese as he's badly injured, "On your feet soldier!" While Reese is the one who damages the terminator, its Connor that ultimately leads the cyborg a certain way so she can crush and defeat it. Paul Winfield as lieutenant Ed Traxler The police lieutenant that gets shot by the terminator during the police station ... we think massacre is a good word for it. Winfield would go on to appear in several other sci-fi outings, albeit small and brief roles, including Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the Star Trek The Next Generation series, as well as Babylon 5. He eventually had a bit of a voice-over career as well. Lance Henrikson as sergeant Hal Vukovich The police sergeant that also gets blown away during the incredible police station shoot up sequence. Henrikson was the veteran actor in the film actually with a number of credits prior, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but only had a small supporting role in this film. And a short and brief appearance by a very young Bill Paxton...

'Widows' failed to make much of a mark at the box office. Critical acclaim hasn't YET translated into Awards Season loot, with so far only an ensemble acting nod from the Critics' Choice Awards.  In other news The Critics' Choice Awards are apparently a thing.  But there ARE things to celebrate and recommend in this flawed but often-compelling would-be action/heist/social commentary flick.  We celebrate. We recommend. And we contemplate whether boating is a thing for Chicagoans and Chris' dysfunctional relationship with MoviePass. Also:  we receive bonus pottery with Lance Henrikson, discuss The Art Of Not Interviewing Drew 'Barrimore', read Viewer Mail But From Listeners, do our Rants 'n Raves segment, AND MORE!

In this week's episode, we're discussing the 1989 Stan Winston monster/slasher/Lance Henrikson film "Pumpkinhead." Special topics for your consideration include: the way dogs' legs bend, more of horror's greatest villains: rich shitty teens, palming people like a basketball, a general rudeness to rural folks, t-shirts with tigers and roses on them, whether or not we are all Pumpkinhead (just a little bit), and lots and lots of talk about sitcoms of the 1980s-1990s. Have you seen Pumpkinhead? How do you feel about it? You can let us know on facebook.com/werewolfambulance, on Instagram @werewolfambulance or on Twitter @werebulance. This, like many of our recent films, was recommended by a few EMTs and we love that--please keep your suggestions and comments coming. In this week's episode Simon is joined by Clive Ashenden to talk about the indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. Just like his characters, Jarmusch has been the outsider, making films outside the studio system since 1980. He is an inspiration to us, as filmmakers, showing that films don't have to be about big picture but can be about the day to day. The films under discussion are PERMANENT VACATION, DOWN BY LAW, DEAD MAN and THE LIMITS OF CONTROL. Movie Heaven Movie Hell is a show where filmmakers Simon Aitken (BLOOD + ROSES, POST-ITS, MODERN LOVE) and Keith Eyles (FEAR VIEW, DRIVEN INSANE, CROSSED LINES) go through the A-Z of directors. Simon and Keith talk about their favourite and least favourite film from that director's body of work.
