We've been waiting weeks for this, and even now — we're still not exactly sure what to expect. But today, we may finally see U.S. President Donald Trump level punishing tariffs on Canada. The White House has told reporters tariffs are happening this weekend, and Trump himself has said there's nothing Canada can do to avoid them. One of CBC's foreign correspondents in Washington joins the program to unpack the details from the White House. We then hear from a Canada-U.S. expert about what's in store for both countries, and small businesses from both sides of the border share how they're bracing for impact.Plus, the final report from the public inquiry into foreign interference says there are no traitors in Parliament, but there are still concerns about threats to Canada's democracy. A national security expert sifts through the findings and an NDP MP details the questions she is left with. Finally, some Liberal leadership candidates are trotting out policy proposals while others are dropping out or being disqualified altogether. Two Hill watchers explain the latest in the contest. This episode features the voices of:Katie Simpson, CBC NewsLaura Dawson, Executive Director of the Canada-U.S. Future Borders CoalitionMaggie Ori, Frankor HydraulicsBill Butcher, Port City Brewing CompanyWesley Wark, senior fellow with the Centre for International Governance Innovation Jenny Kwan, NDP MP for Vancouver EastStuart Thomson, Parliamentary bureau chief for the National PostStephanie Levitz, senior politics reporter for The Globe and Mail

Free For All Friday - Hour 1 Fill-in host Mark Twohey breaks down the biggest stories with Canada's top newsmakers. On today's show: In the wake of Wednesday's tragic mid-air plane crash in Washington, are today's air-traffic controllers stretched too thin? We dig deeper with Rob Kokonis, who is the President of AirTrav. As Canada tries to address America's border concerns, are we addressing them incorrectly? Laura Dawson, an Executive Director of the Future Borders Coalition, delivers her two cents. Canadian cities, such as Toronto and Vancouver, are getting bigger and bigger. Some argue they are way too full. How can we adapt to this reality? We open the debate floor with Paul Beaudry, a former Deputy Governor at the Bank of Canada. Free For All Friday - Hour 2 Hosts from all over the country join the roundtable to discuss the five biggest stories of the week. This week's show features Sabrina Grover from NorthStar Public Affairs, Alex Chreston of Crestview Strategy, and Cam Holmstrom of Niipaawi Strategies. Topic 1: NDP leader Jagmeet Singh says he could support the Liberals long enough to support a tariff relief bill. Do you still believe an early election gets called once Parliament returns in late-March? Topic 2: Donald Trump's tariffs, and what the U.S. President really hopes to accomplish. Topic 3: If Doug Ford still wants to lead Canada's rallying cry against the Trump tariffs, is it out of line for him to travel to America and represent Ontario mid-campaign? Topic 4: Does Canada need to mandate a 'common culture'?

The 2025 political landscape is looking very different than it did just a few weeks ago. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's pending resignation, the prorogation of Parliament, and the sudden Liberal leadership race has offered the Grits a new lifeline.  U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to hit Canada with 25 per cent tariffs on Feb. 1 also offers the political parties another chance at reframing themselves and what they want the ballot question to be at the next election, whether that's in eight weeks or eight months.  This week on “It's Political,” former Conservative party campaign director Fred DeLorey, former Prime Minister's Office head of policy and cabinet affairs Marci Surkes and former NDP press secretary Allison Gifford join Althia to talk about the shifting landscape and what it means for the major players.  But first, Future Borders Coalition's Laura Dawson explains what Trump's latest threats could mean for Canada, and how best to brace for the impact. In this episode: Compass Rose Group chief strategy officer and former senior advisor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Marci Surkes; NorthStar Public Affairs chair Fred DeLorey; Clear Strategy vice-president of public policy Allison Gifford; and Future Borders Coalition executive director Laura Dawson. Hosted by Althia Raj. Some of the clips this week were sourced from CPAC, CP24 and the White House.  This episode of “It's Political” was produced by Althia Raj and Kevin Sexton.  Matt Hearn is our sound engineer.
