#79: Six-Figure Freelancing: Consistently Sending LOIs and Using Upwork, with Laura Pennington Briggs

Today’s guest is Laura Pennington Briggs. Laura is a teacher turned entrepreneur, two-time TEDx speaker and freelance writer. She’s the author of the award-winning “How to Start Your Own Freelance Writing Business” and the Amazon bestseller “Six-Figure Freelancer” and the founder of Operation Freelance.  Laura started as a freelance writer and virtual assistant in 2012. Now, she continues to write but also does book marketing and book launch strategy for authors. She started out as a part-time freelancer. But after 18 months of freelancing—only six months of that as a full-time freelancer—she hit the six-figure mark. To get to that financial goal, Laura tracked her income and financial projections on a legal pad.  Freelancers are often told not to go on Upwork, but Laura used Upwork to build and scale her business. In fact, she earned over $450,000 through the site over the years. But she points out that it’s important to have a strategy when you are using Upwork. When she was a new freelancer, she aimed to get Upwork jobs primarily for the feedback, not necessarily the fee, so that she could build good ratings on the site, opening the door to better and more work. She called these her “fast, cheap and simple” jobs to deliver the service easily and quickly to get a fast five-star review. She now has more than 200 positive ratings on Upwork, which lands her good work. You also have to know what the red flags are, such as clients with ridiculous expectations and a very long description for a simple, short project. Also, when clients tell you they’ve worked with lots of other freelancers before and it’s never worked out, that’s a red flag! You can also read other freelancers’ reviews of clients. Trust those reviews. The two ways that have worked best for Laura to find new clients have been Upwork and emailing cold letters of introduction (LOIs). Laura says if you send 50 LOIs and only one person responds, there’s something wrong with your LOI or your strategy. It’s important to take the time to research the client and explain why you like that company. Make the beginning of an LOI personal and hook the person. Don’t use a standard template for the entire LOI, which is a common mistake. Great tip: Laura emails an LOI, and then about 30 minutes later she connects with that person on LinkedIn saying, “Spoiler alert: I just pitched you via email.” Remember: Your perspective clients don’t really care about you, only that you’re qualified. So keep that part of your LOI to about two sentences and focus instead on how you can help them. Sending LOIs is also a numbers game—you need to send a lot to get responses. You cannot just send a 1–2 LOIs a week and expect to get a bunch of new clients. Laura recommends sending five pitches a week for three months, tracking them and seeing how people respond. Make it a weekly habit. Laura is a morning person. She works in batches based on the type of work, not the client. For example, she spends time on pitches for different clients during the same time slot, not focusing on all tasks for one client before moving on to another clients’ tasks. When it comes to pricing, Laura recommends newer freelancers take on smaller projects and try out their rate, rather than committing to a rate and a long-term contract. You should try out your pricing and make sure you feel comfortable with it. Experienced freelancers should examine their pricing every six months. Clients are paying not for your time, but your years of experience and expertise. Laura does not commit to pricing over the initial phone call. She tells potential clients she will get back to them by email. She may be nervous to quote over the phone, but she may also actually need the time to consider all aspects of the project and what it may truly cost and entail. Remember that you can negotiate everything, not just price. You can negotiate length, deadline, scope of work and the amount of communication (no phone calls, no strategy sessions unless they pay more). You can also give a discount if they sign a long-term contract. Laura advises that you have to get comfortable with calling the shots. You might feel like you’re pitching yourself as a freelancer to a client, but you have to believe that you’re a CEO too and you get to decide what your company policies and deal breakers are. Laura tried to be an agency owner for a year, outsourcing her writing to subcontractors. And she hated it. You do not have to outsource your client work if you don’t want to. Instead, if you want to scale, you can outsource certain pieces of the process, like marketing, administrative work, invoicing or LinkedIn outreach. What we're going to talk about today is the financial impact of working for yourself [01:07] Would you mind sharing a little bit about your background and what inspired you to get to where you are today? [01:24] Laura: I turned to a side hustle (working as a digital freelance writer) [01:30] My business ultimately grew to the point where it was too hard for me to hold down my day job and side hustle. So I moved that side hustle into my full time and that's what I've been doing for the last 6 years [02:10] Kevin: What are the pro's and con's about working for yourself other than being hard on yourself since you are your own boss? Laura: [02:17] Pro's [02:19] Freedom and flexibility [02:24] Deciding how you'd like to spend your work hours per week [02:33] The potential to make more money [02:42] You set your rates and your fees and can add or remove things as it makes sense [02:48] More income flexibility [02:55] You get to decide who you work with [03:08] Con's [03:09] You are your own boss [03:12] You have to work many hours especially in the start-up phase [03:21] Paying your own taxes [03:23] You don't necessarily get that money dropped into your bank account every 2 weeks [3:30] Have to account for self-employment tax, Medicare, social security, and income tax [03:45] Your business bleeds into every aspect of your life [04:02] Because so much of it is in your mind, it's always around (not as easy as a corporate job) [04:11] Kevin: What I have found with running WTR is there's a lot of prep work before you actually start the podcast (research and new ideas that you're always thinking about) [05:38] Laura: I always feel like the pro's always count so much more than the con's [05:44] Any job and career is going to have some negative aspects [06:00] Kevin: Financially speaking, working for yourself can be more flexible. How has it impacted you financially speaking? [06:08] Laura: I grew my business pretty quickly after leaving my full time job. Once I was able to dedicate more time to it, I saw my revenue increase significantly [06:18] I've been able to scale my business to the 6 figure point for the last several years [06:28] I look for ways that I can diversify my income (evolving as a business owner) [07:13] I'm always raising my rates and ways that I cannot just get paid once for something [07:42] Other avenues like books, courses, coaching (additional revenue streams) [08:29] Kevin: So you have multiple income streams...

This week JRP DAILY invites Laura Pennington-Briggs on to talk about how she went from being an inner-city school teacher, to a full-time, six-figure, freelance writer. Laura was the woman who presented the "The Future is Freelancing" TEDx talk which was released on YouTube last month. Nowadays, you can probably find a lot of content around about becoming a freelancer, working from home, having more flexible hours, and the ability to travel. Although this space is starting to seem overly saturated and/or crowded... it can still work for a lot of people. Many of us, myself included, find ourselves asking questions like "How can I make money online?" or "How can I start my own freelance business?" Well... take it from someone who has actually done it. In this interview we go over obtaining clients, pricing your services, deciding what service to actually provide, and more. Freelancing is a great way for you to earn some extra income online, whether that just be a side hustle for you, or if you are looking to make a full time income freelancing. Freelancing has the power to allow you to be your own boss, quit your day job, and escape the rat race. So if you have ever had any questions about freelancing, you just might find the answers in this freelance podcast interview. Enjoy. -------------------- Justin Phillips: Facebook: https://facebook.com/jrpbusiness Instagram: https://instagram.com/jrpbusiness Twitter: https://twitter.com/jjustinrp Website: https://justinrp.net/ Laura Pennington-Briggs: Website: http://www.betterbizacademy.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/laurapenningtoninternational/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/sixfigurewriter "Start Your Own Freelance Writing Business: The Complete Guide to Starting and Scaling from Scratch" Book by Laura Pennington. https://amzn.to/31lT2tU

Before today's episode of Turning Lemons Into Lemonade, I had never met Laura Pennington.  It turns out that she is one of the savviest women building a business that I've interviewed on my show.  We had SO much in common that it felt like I was talking to myself in a lot of ways. First, Laura talked about how she built her writing business as a freelancer while she still was working in corporate.  Then she talked about how despite making more as a part time freelancer than she did in her full time job, she still was afraid to cut the cord and leave the steady bi-weekly paycheck!  We talked about the mindset that we often have about our steady paychecks - and despite having demand for our product or service, that it is still hard to think of building a business that is successful enough to support us consistently! Laura also talked about something I discuss frequently - scaling a successful business that really isn't in alignment with how she wanted to live her life.  You often find that money isn't everything - and that if business growth and business success is actually costing you in your quality of life, that it probably isn't the right thing.  She talked about how both she and her husband (who is a doctor) made very conscious life choices that led them to better quality of life - and not necessarily more income! As Laura was talking about how she juggles building a business - her freelance business and her coaching business, we talked about productivity hacks to help her manage her busy day.  She had some great advice for women business owners - find a mentor who has done what you want to do - not just one who has done something cool!  If you get one who has done something cool - they often think you need to do it their way!  Find one that is RIGHT for where you are in the business. She also advised that you find the things that are most important and do them at the time of day when you are your best!  If you're a morning person - do them then! If you're a night person - do your highest impact activities then.  Understand who you are and build your business and life around you to generate true success and happiness!
