On March 16, 1974, a sketch appeared on The Carol Burnett Show featuring Carol Burnett, Vicki Lawrence and Harvey Korman portraying a “normal” American family -- warts and all. This sketch, known as “The Family”, led by a then 25 year-old Vicki Lawrence playing a gray-haired 63 year-old ‘Mama', spawned 30 more sketches, a TV Movie (Eunice) and finally a spin-off series of its own (Mama's Family) which ran for 130 episodes over six seasons both on CBS and in syndication (1983-1990).In “The Family”, Carol Burnett played the melodramatic, ambitious, brow-beaten daughter of ‘Mama'. Mama, played by Vicki Lawrence, is an exaggeratedly mean-spirited and insult-spitting widow and mother of five children: three sons played by guest stars Roddy McDowell, Alan Alda and Tom Smothers -- and two daughters: Eunice & Ellen (played by Betty White). Eunice's husband Ed Higgins was played by Harvey Korman. How did one simple sketch take on such a huge life of its own, creating a sprawling TV empire that some are calling “The Mama-Verse”? Susan and Sharon put on their housecoats and curly gray wigs to find out!THE CONVERSATIONCarol Burnett's career started with a Broadway role starring as the lead in Once Upon a Mattress and then as a rising star on The Garry Moore Show. The Carol Burnett Show was hugely successful, running eleven seasons, garnering 70 Emmy nominations and winning 25.Carol Burnett was encouraged to “speak up for herself” by another TV comedy legend -- Lucille Ball.A fan letter from then 18 year-old Vicki Lawrence to Carol Burnett led to her actually being cast as a regular on the show!“HARVARD SCHOOL OF COMEDY”: Lawrence cites Harvey Korman and Carol Burnett as her show business mentors during the 11 years she spent on the show.ONE-HIT WONDER: Five years into her run on The Carol Burnett Show, Lawrence had a hit song, recording “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia”!In the TV movie Eunice, Mama suddenly only has three children instead of five -- what happened to the others? And why is one of them suddenly Ken Berry?Vicki Lawrence was nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal of ‘Mama' in Eunice. The TV series Mama's Family was aired first as a prime-time network comedy and later as a nationally syndicated series. It originally ran for two years on CBS, was cancelled in 1984 -- and then revived TWO YEARS LATER in 1986 by Lorimar Syndication to run for additional 100 episodes!NAME SWITCH: The character Ken Berry played started out as “Phillip” in the TV-movie but then became “Vinton” in the TV series. The TV show introduced “Fran” played by future Golden Girl, Rue McClanahan -- playing Betty White's aunt! The TV show also introduced Vinton's children Buzz and Sonya played by “80's TV Ladies” alum, Eric Brown and actress Karin Argoud.Mama's neighbor, Naomi Oates, was played by “Another World” “The Nanny” and now “80s TV Ladies” alum, Dorothy Lyman! So join Susan and Sharon as they talk Lou Grant, social justice, Julie Andrews and the first Live Televised Cinderella musical, “Raytown, Missouri”, Kamala Harris, Matlock, driving your own story -- and “Miss Fireball of Inglewood”!AUDIO-OGRAPHYWatch The Carol Burnett Show and Mama's Family across many platforms. Leading up to our return in September, we are doing summer reruns, which is our way of repurposing episodes that with a little configuring (and retitling) might get more listens than they got back in the day. First up: Mama's Family! And next week, you'll be getting a full-fledged new episode about Saved by the Bell! Enjoy! “There Is Nothing Like the Dames” (February 17, 1990) Believe it or not, Mama's Family has a deeply queer history. While the final result of — the syndicated revival that returned to TV after NBC canceled the it — bears little of that, this episode goes over all the ways a recurring sketch on The Carol Burnett Show originally told the story of a queer-coded artist who can't relate to his family back home. It's all the stranger to consider that Mama's Family never did an explicitly queer episode, even with all those Bob Mackie costumes. Read the article in which Bubba actor Allan Kayser talks about his famously tight jeans. Vicki Lawrence sings the original, non-instrumental version of the Mama's Family theme song. But also listen to her disco banger “Don't Stop the Music” and the no. 1 murder mystery pop hit “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.” Watch the brilliant 1982 TV movie adaptation of the Harper family saga, Eunice. Also watch The Carol Burnett Show's famous “Went With the Wind” sketch. But most importantly watch the original sketch version that led to Mama's Family, when it was just called “The Family.” It made Drew way more sad than sketch comedy usually does.

Morgan Jones, LabourList‘An absorbing history of Labour's radical left.' Jason Cowley, Observer‘The Searchers should be studied closely by anyone with a stake in British politics.' Patrick Maguire, The TimesIn the great revolutionary year of 1968, Tony Benn was a respectable Labour minister in his forties, and he was restless. While new social movements were shaking up Britain and much of the world, Westminster politics seemed stuck. It was time, he decided, for a different approach.Over the next half century, the radicalized Benn helped forge a new left in Britain. He was joined by four other politicians, who would become comrades, collaborators and rivals: Ken Livingstone, John McDonnell, Diane Abbott and Jeremy Corbyn. For Andy Beckett, the story of these admired and loathed political explorers - both their sudden breakthroughs and long stretches in the wilderness - is the untold story of British politics in modern times. As he reveals, their project to create a radically more equal, liberal and democratic Britain has been much more influential than electoral history might suggest, and can be seen from the shape of our city life to the causes of our culture wars. For their many detractors, this influence was and remains dangerous: a form of extremism that must be stamped out. David Bowie would leave the glam rock genre of his previous albums for a more soulful sound with his ninth studio album, Young Americans.  This album features blue eyed soul, or what Bowie would refer to as "plastic soul."  David Bowie moved to the United States in 1974 during a time when tax concerns were driving many artists out of the UK.  He was living in New York City at the time, and starting production on the album in Philadelphia where he worked with guitarist Carlos Alomar.  A funk guitarist, Alomar had worked as a session musician at the Apollo Theater and would become a collaborator and band leader for Bowie over the next decade.  In addition to Carlos Alomar, Bowie worked on this album with a number of artists including Robin Clark, Ava Cherry, saxophonist David Sanborn, and a new musician named Luther Vandross. He would also collaborate on this album with ex-Beatle John Lennon who was recording in New York at the same time as Bowie's recording moved there.  Bowie and Lennon had met previously at a party hosted by Elizabeth Taylor.  Lennon collaborated with Bowie during his "lost weekend" period.Young Americans contains elements of soul, funk, and R&B, and was a deliberate attempt to garner more success in the U.S. market.  It certainly achieved this result, though critics would deliver mixed reviews.  The transition from glam rock to blue-eyed soul would not be one which all fans embraced, but David Bowie would follow his own creative muse.  It would not be the last time we would see a significant stylistic change from Bowie.  It was nevertheless a commercial success, going to number 9 on the US albums chart, remaining on the charts for almost a year.Rob brings us this funky example of “plastic soul.” Young AmericansThe title track was recorded in Philadelphia, and hit number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, Bowie's second-highest chart success to this date.  Then unknown singer Luther Vandross conceived the backing vocal arrangement.  The song provides impressions of American life through the eyes of an English man.  David Sanborn provides the saxophone work.Across the UniverseThis cover of the Beatles song also found collaboration with Beatles' alumnus John Lennon.  Backing vocals and guitar are provided by Lennon, who considered this song a better version than his own.  Critics tend to disagree, as reviews on the Bowie version were primarily negative.FascinationThis track began as a jam by Luther Vandross entitled “Funky Music (Is a Part of Me)” which was performed before the Bowie concerts in 1974.  When Vandross was retained from the “Diamond Dogs” tour, the two collaborated to create the song “Fascination.”  The song was an homage to the Philadelphia funk sound.FameThis single hit number 1 on the US charts, the first Bowie song to do so.  Composed by Bowie, Alomar, and Lennon, the high backing “Fame” vocalizations are provided by John Lennon.  Bowie would describe it as a “nasty, angry” song directed at management with which he had previous issues. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Ease On Down the Road by Consumer Rapport (from the motion picture The Wiz)A soulful take on The Wizard of Oz featured Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. STAFF PICKS:Judy Mae by Boomer Castleman Wayne initiates the staff picks with a controversial song that went to number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The lyrics tell of a father to a 17 year-old girl who marries a woman half his age.  When an affair ensures between the stepmother and the daughter, the father dies of an accident shortly thereafter.  It feels like a racier version of “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.”Long Haired Country Boy by the Charlie Daniels BandBrian brings us a song about a guy with a very passive attitude about life. “I ain't asking for nobody for nuthin' that I can't get on my own.  If you don't like the way I'm livin' you just leave this long-haired country boy alone.” It was off the second album from the CDB entitled “Fire on the Mountain.”When Will I Be Loved by Linda Ronstadt Bruce features Ronstadt doing a cover originally from the Everly Brothers in 1960.  While the original peaked at number 8, Ronstadt's cover would go to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song is a vocal trio between Ronstadt, Kenny Edwards, and Andrew Gold. Trampled Under Foot by Led Zeppelin Rob finishes the staff picks with a song John Paul Jones claims was inspired by Stevie Wonder's “Superstition.”  The lyrics were inspired by blues artist Robert Johnson's “Terraplane Blues” from  1936.  A Terraplane was a classic car that serves as a not-so-subtle source for sexual innuendo.  It is off the band's double album, “Physical Graffiti.”  COMEDY TRACK:Bertha Butt Boogie by The Jimmy Castor Bunch This funk novelty track went to number 16 on the US pop chart and number 22 on the US R&B chart.

In the immortal words of Betty Rizzo: “Watch it, hey, I'm Doris Day – I was not brought up that way!” While teen stars could always be counted on to keep their pants on in the dying days of Old Hollywood comedy, Doris Day was a unique figure in that she played adult working women who were continually thrown into the most lustful of situations, and never worried audiences that she'd come out the other side without her virtue intact. As one of the biggest box office draws of the era, movie-goers would eagerly await her latest bedroom adventures in which she narrowly escapes certain fornication as frequently as James Bond narrowly escapes certain death. And, like Bond, there's never any doubt that she'll get her man.In this episode, Bart and Jenna delight in some 1960s romcom frivolity as Doris Day turns down every leading man from Rock Hudson and James Garner, to Cary Grant and Rod Taylor. She also manages to do battle with a host of mechanical foes, from Automats and car washes to city-wide blackouts and robot vacuum trash dogs. Our intrepid hosts treat these movies with the seriousness they deserve. The following films are discussed:• Lover Come Back (1961) Directed by Delbert Mann Starring Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Tony Randall• That Touch of Mink (1962) Directed by Delbert Mann Starring Doris Day, Cary Grant, Gig Young• Move Over, Darling (1963) Directed by Michael Gordon Starring Doris Day, James Garner, Polly Bergen• Send Me No Flowers (1964) Directed by Norman Jewison Starring Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Tony Randall• The Glass Bottom Boat (1966) Directed by Frank Tashlin Starring Doris Day, Rod Taylor, Arthur Godfrey• Where Were You When the Lights Went Out? Synopsis On today's date in 1994, at Orchestra Hall in Chicago, the Chicago Symphony and conductor Daniel Barenboim gave the world premiere performance of Partita by the American composer Elliott Carter, specially commissioned in honor of the composer's 85th birthday. It was a major work, and a major occasion – but, as the Chicago Tribune's music critic John von Rheim put it, that date “will forever be known as the Night the Lights Went Out on Elliott Carter.” Just as the orchestra was playing the final pages of Carter's complex score, the house lights went out. The audience gasped. The orchestra stopped playing. Not sure what to do, the audience started applauding. Then, after a moment or two the lights came back on. After breathing a sigh of relief, Barenboim and the orchestra prepared to pick up where they had left off – and then the lights went out again! Turning to the audience, Barenboim quipped, "It's a good thing we and Mr. Carter are not superstitious." Well, eventually the lights came back on – and stayed on, enabling the Orchestra to finish the premiere of Carter's Partita. But, perhaps as a kind of insurance policy – later on Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony also made a live recording of the new work. “There Is Nothing Like the Dames” (February 17, 1990) Believe it or not, Mama's Family has a deeply queer history. While the final result of it — the syndicated revival that returned to TV after NBC canceled the it — bears little of that, this episode goes over all the ways a recurring sketch on The Carol Burnett Show originally told the story of a queer-coded artist who can't relate to his family back home. It's all the stranger to consider that Mama's Family never did an explicitly queer episode, even with all those Bob Mackie costumes. Check out our sponsor, Spaces! And join our spaces for Gayest Episode Ever and Cartoons That Made Us Gay. Buy the new issue of Beyond Sunset here. Go shop at our TeePublic store! The stories my father has told me about his childhood are ones that have stayed with me. There are stories about the ice cream shop he worked in, the pranks he played on his bus driver, and the trouble he used to get into with his partner-in-crime Bobby MacGyver, but the one that always stuck with me was one he'd tell about his mother. My grandfather was a police officer in New Rochelle and my dad would tell me my grandmother would ask him to bring home a pint of ice cream and she'd eat it while waiting for him to walk through the door after his shift had ended. I can vividly picture her waiting in a chair by the door eating coffee ice cream while anxiously waiting for my grandpa to come home. I share this because today's guest, Karen White, was also impacted by some of the stories her father would tell her as well and elements of those stories are featured in her bestselling novels. MEET KAREN WHITE Karen White is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of 31 books, including the Tradd Street series, The Last Night in London, Dreams of Falling, The Night the Lights Went Out, Flight Patterns, The Sound of Glass, and A Long Time Gone. She is the coauthor of All the Ways We Said Goodbye, The Glass Ocean and The Forgotten Room with New York Times bestselling authors Beatriz Williams and Lauren Willig. Her latest novel, The Shop on Royal Street, came out on March 29th. KEY TOPICS IN THIS EPISODE How reading was a form of escape for Karen How her dad's real ghost stories impacted her imagination and writing The role of encouragement played in Karen's writing journey Why she went from being a reader to a writer after becoming a mother The idea behind her new series first book Why validation is important for authors KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM MY TALK WITH KAREN Writing as an escape. Karen enjoys escaping into a good book. For her, it's more than just entertainment; reading actually provides an opportunity for self-reflection and world excavation that she can't get any other way! When she was young, Karen's dad used to tell stories about growing up poor in the South during the Great Depression. These stories stayed with her and elements of them wind up in her own writing. The importance of encouragement. Karen's 6th grade teacher saw potential in her and encouraged to explore her talent, which put her on the path of becoming an author. Just do it. Karen takes a page out of the Nike playbook while dishing out advice to aspiring authors—to just do it! WHERE TO BUY THE SHOP ON ROYAL STREET Amazon  | Bookshop.org MEMORABLE QUOTES FROM KAREN  “Just do it. My sixth-grade teacher used to say where there's a will there's a way. I know a mother of four who just who started writing she's now a New York Times bestselling author. She would get up at four o'clock in the morning to write before she had to get up with the kids and then go do her full-time job. So, where there's a will there's a way. For Video Edition, Please Click and Subscribe Here: https://youtu.be/tuIHPTOUiWE One of America's most loved actresses was born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff on April 3, 1922. Her first starring movie role was in Romance on the High Seas (1948). The next year, she made two more films, My Dream Is Yours (1949) and It's a Great Feeling (1949). Audiences took to her beauty, terrific singing voice and bubbly personality, and she turned in fine performances in the movies she made (in addition to several hit records). She made three films for Warner Bros. in 1950 and five more in 1951. In that year, she met and married Martin Melcher, who adopted her young son Terry, who later grew up to become Terry Melcher, a successful record producer. In 1953, Doris starred in Calamity Jane (1953), which was a major hit, and several more followed: Lucky Me (1954), Love Me or Leave Me (1955), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) and what is probably her best-known film, Pillow Talk (1959). She began to slow down her filmmaking pace in the 1960s, even though she started out the decade with a hit, Please Don't Eat the Daisies (1960), Do Not Disturb (1965), The Glass Bottom Boat (1966), Where Were You When the Lights Went Out? (1968) and With Six You Get Eggroll (1968). Martin Melcher died in 1968, and Doris never made another film, but she had been signed by Melcher to do her own TV series, The Doris Day Show (1968). She ran Doris Day Animal League in Carmel, California, which advocates homes and proper care of household pets. Doris died on May 13, 2019, in Carmel Valley Village, California. She was 97.

“And so, what was to me a relatively — at least in terms of storytelling — a tidy story of me collapsing and having my wife and my co-workers save my life and be getting up and getting out of the hospital and getting to write again, was a bit more involved than that.” In his new book, The Night the Lights Went Out, Defector columnist Drew Magary delivers a darkly comic and deeply honest story about his recovery from the traumatic brain injury that almost killed him. Drew joins us on the show to talk about what happened the night he almost died, what came later (including his deafness and cochlear implant), why he writes (and what he learned self-publishing a novel), the books and writers he loves to read, and more. Featured book: The Night the Lights Went Out by Drew Magary. Produced/hosted by Miwa Messer and engineered by Harry Liang. Follow us here for new episodes Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The humor writer Drew Magary was at a karaoke bar when his life changed in a flash: He collapsed and cracked his skull. By most accounts, the resulting traumatic brain injury should have been fatal, but he survived. As he recounts in his book The Night the Lights Went Out, recovering from that injury has been tough. Among other things, he permanently lost some of his senses. As Magary tells NPR's Lulu Garcia Navarro, recovery has required him to figure out who he is now, post injury — a challenge that makes for a good story, he says.

The event is raising money to help Ferst's goal of providing books for youth from birth to age 5 to help increase literacy rates locally for youth entering school for the first time at Pre-K or Kindergarten levels. This year also provides an opportunity for a community-wide reading of Karen White's "The Night the Lights Went Out." Part 2 of the episode focuses on the Polk School District and a presentation was given on February 2 by Assistant Superintendent Dr. Katie Thomas over why students should remain on a four-day week during the coming 2021-22 academic year. "The Night the Lights Went Out" !! Beware of Dog Parts 1 & 2 took place over 2 nights (Sun, then the following Tues) due to a massive storm that knocked the arenas power out on night 1. I like how WWE Network has formatted this show : Night 1 comes first, so the HBK v Bulldog match is 2nd on the card...its a neat little quirk. The Strap Match between the newly renamed Stone Cold Steve Austin v Savio Vega (with Austin's manager - Ted DiBiase's career on the line) is an amazing match!!...along with a fairly decent Casket Match between Goldust v Undertaker where the new superstar Mankind pops out of the casket and attacks Undertaker!

Two years after The Guests on South Battery became a New York Times hardcover bestseller, Melanie Trenholm returns. Finally married to true-crime bestselling author Jack Trenholm, they are living in Melanie’s historic home with their 18-month old twins and Jack’s fifteen-year-old daughter. But domestic bliss can’t last for long. A new passel of spirits have taken up residence at Fifty-Five Tradd, and they need Melanie’s help to right old wrongs and solve a mystery. In THE CHRISTMAS SPIRITS ON TRADD STREET, Melanie should be anticipating the holidays with nothing but joy. But then she discovers that a long-lost Revolutionary War treasure may be somewhere on her property. A gift from the French King—brought to Charleston by the Marquis de Lafayette himself to help finance the Colonial war effort—it’s whispered that many have already killed, and died to possess the treasure. When it resurfaces in present day, someone will once again stop at nothing to possess it . . . even if that means destroying everything Melanie holds dear. Christmas is the perfect time to fall in love with the residents of Tradd Street, both living and otherwise. Certain to delight long-time fans and easy to jump into for newcomers, THE CHRISTMAS SPIRITS ON TRADD STREET is a can’t-miss holiday release. Encore release December 3, 2018. Encore release August 26, 2017. It's War on Christmas! There is no War on Christmas--there's only a war on the alleged War on Christmas. Example: A new group called Faith Driven Consumers has published the so-called Faith Equality Index, which ranks major companies on, among other things, whether they use "Christmas" in their holiday literature, discriminate against LGBT persons, or oppose women's sexual freedom. Basically, if you're a bigot they want Christians to shop at your store. So...we're encouraging our listeners to do the opposite: if Faith Driven Consumers don't like a company, we love 'em. Plus: We offer our annual Top Five Suggestions for Gifts for Nonbelievers: David's list: 5. The Story of God by Chris Matheson 4. A subscription to Skeptic magazine. 3. A charitable donation in your friend of family member's name to the Freedom from Religion Foundation. 2. A trip to France! Show your support and show you're not afraid. 1. Singer/songwriter Ellis Paul's new children's book The Night the Lights Went Out on Christmas and/or his new album of original holiday music City of Silver Dreams. John's list: 5. The albums of Baba Brinkman. 4. For shock value: A statuette of Baphomet (look on eBay or etsy). 3. A charitable donation in your friend or family member's name to the Humanist Society. 2. The albums of Eagles of Death Metal (the band that was playing Le Bataclan in Paris during the November 13 terrorist attacks). 1. The 30-meter long fold-out science book "Evo" by Dutch artist Jurian Moller. In other news: Presidential candidate Ted Cruz implies that nonbelievers aren't fit to become president. Presidential candidate John Kasich says he'll create a federal organization to promote "Judeo-Christian" values. (He later tried to walk that back a bit.) How knowledgeable are you on world religions? Try your hand at the "Are You Smarter Than an Atheist" quiz. Go see the film Spotlight. Stop arguing. Just go.

1860: Pony Express Begins Operations

Trivia Minute by TriviaPeople.com

On this date in 1860, the Pony Express began operations. Here are some things you may not have known about the Old West mail service. After the discovery of gold in 1849 and the admission of California as a state in 1850, a faster way to deliver transcontinental mail was needed. At the time, mail could take up to a month to travel from coast to coast. The Pony Express was founded with the goal of cutting that time to 10 days between St. Joseph, Missouri and San Francisco, California. The goal was thought impossible by many. The Pony Express system involved a series of horseback riders traveling relatively short distances at high speeds. When the system started  it employed 120 riders on 400 horses going between 184 stations manned by more than 400 support personnel. The identity of the first rider is in dispute. Depending on the source it was either Billy Richardson or Johnny Fry who departed St. Joseph, Missouri. The first run took 11 days to reach San Francisco. The cost to send a letter via the Pony Express was originally five dollars per half ounce. The equivalent of about $120 per half ounce today. Gradually, as telegraph service expanded across the country, The Pony Express route was shortened. News of Abraham Lincoln’s election as president of the United States in 1860 was able to be transmitted to the West Coast in just seven days, thanks to the Pony Express and the expansion of telegraph service to Fort Kearny, Nebraska. Less than a year after service started, the route ran from Salt Lake City to Sacramento, spanning the final gap in telegraph service. The service ceased on October 26, 1861, two days after the first transcontinental telegraph line was completed at Salt Lake City. The operation never made money, losing $110,000 over the course of the 19-month run. Our question, what’s the fastest speed recorded by a horse? Today is unofficially National Chocolate Mousse Day, National Sweet Potato Day, and Armenian Appreciation Day. It’s the birthday of actress Doris Day, who is 95; astronaut Gus Grissom, who was born in 1926; and singer Wayne Newton, who is 75. Because our topic happened before 1960, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1973, the top song in the U.S. was “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” by Vicki Lawrence. The No. 1 movie was “Charlotte’s Web,” while the novel “The Odessa File” by Frederick Forsyth topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.  Weekly question: What is the second fastest land mammal?
