The Power of Boring: James Walters on Creativity, Photography, and Finding Your Purpose

Send us a textWhat happens when you've checked all the boxes of success but still feel something's missing? James Walters, photographer, author, and host of "A Joyful Rebellion" podcast, joins us to explore the transformative power of creative risk-taking and authentic living.James shares his fascinating journey from commercial photographer (who initially used photography to escape math class) to wedding photographer capturing unpredictable moments, to helping others tell their brand stories. This evolution mirrors his philosophy on life—embracing change and finding fulfillment through creative expression and self-awareness.At the heart of our conversation is the concept of a "joyful rebellion," that pivotal moment when you realize external success markers aren't bringing internal fulfillment. James explains how many people diligently follow others' scripts—parents, teachers, society—only to discover they're not living their own story. The rebellion comes in reclaiming authorship of your life, sometimes through small adjustments and other times through complete reinvention.Perhaps most surprising is James's counterintuitive approach to creativity: making certain aspects of life intentionally "boring." By streamlining decisions about wardrobe, food, or other personally low-priority areas, we free mental energy for pursuits that genuinely matter. As James puts it, "Look for something in your life that you can make boring, repetitive, a no-brainer, and that leaves so much more space to put your energy into being creative."James also discusses his books—from "Accessory to Marriage" chronicling outrageous wedding photography stories to "Meditations of the Mundane," where he photographs and creates stories about everyday discarded objects. His current project aims to help children develop storytelling skills through photography.Listen now to discover why awareness is the essential first step to meaningful change and embrace James's powerful mantra: "Nothing changes if nothing changes." Your own joyful rebellion might be closer than you think.Want to be a guest on Living the Dream with Curveball? James Walters – Visual Storyteller & Founder of the Joyful RebellionOn this episode of the Move Swiftly Podcast, we welcome James Walters, a master visual storyteller who has spent over 30 years capturing the essence of people, businesses, and brands through powerful photography.James has built a career around telling other people's stories — from high-level commercial work to intimate family portraits. But his own story took an unexpected turn after a series of traumatic life events forced him to rebuild everything: his identity, his purpose, and his path forward. What emerged from that season wasn't just survival — it was a creative and personal transformation he now calls the "Joyful Rebellion."Inspired by the idea that life can be rewritten like a movie script, James made the conscious decision to stop living reactively and start directing his own story. Now, he shows up every day with intention — helping others do the same by sharing hard-earned wisdom around healing, creativity, and finding purpose after disruption.Whether you're navigating change, rebuilding after a loss, or simply ready to reclaim authorship over your own life, James offers a unique blend of artistic insight and personal clarity that will challenge and inspire you to take the lead in your own story. To learn more about James and explore his work, visit jameswalters.com

The Fantasy/Animation podcast finally tackles the seminal Toy Story (John Lasseter, 1995), with Episode 138 looking at Pixar's computer-animated feature and the film that transformed animation in Hollywood - and beyond - into a digital medium. Joining Chris and Alex to examine Toy Story's computerised production and the pleasures of its pristine visual illusionism is Dr Lucy Fife Donaldson, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of St Andrews, whose work focuses on film and television style, audiovisual design and 'below-the-line' labour, performance and the body, and videographic criticism. Lucy is the author of Texture in Film (Palgrave MacMillan, 2014), and the co-editor (with James Walters) of Television Performance (Bloomsbury, 2019) and most recently, Epic / everyday: Moments in Television (Manchester University Press, 2023) with Sarah Cardwell & Jonathan Bignell. Topics in this episode include Toy Story's digital surfaces and textures, and the vocabulary that is needed to talk about fine and peripheral detail; animation as a space of inescapable and intensified design; the contribution of everyday textures to the film's construction of worldhood and the narrative journey of the toys; the plasticity of character and the miniaturisation (and magnification) of texture; and how Toy Story's sense of ‘play' is articulated via the careful and highly reflexive attention paid to scuffs, surfaces, and scale. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

One of my favorite parts of the Barbie movie was the soundtrack, chock full of songs written specifically for the movie. And that got me thinking about all the other iconic songs we have purely because a movie called for them. So today my brother (and friend of the show) James Walters is back on The Couch to talk about some of our favorite movie theme songs. James is not just my brother and a music and pop culture expert, of course. He's the owner of The Big Gay Collective, creating fabulous scented products including a whole lot of amazing candles. He's also a former professional musician and the person on this planet whose pop culture memories most closely overlap with mine. So obviously he's the person who invited me to go see Barbie and the person who's perfect for another musical conversation. But not a conversation about musicals. Because we're talking about movies that are specifically not musicals. Because why? I don't know but these are the parameters we ended up with. Of course, because this is The Couch, where side notes and rabbit trails are always welcome, we also get into the King of Soundtracks, my favorite TV show which I promise I do really love even though I blank on the name of it, and karaoke. Lastly, a note about the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, a.k.a. the writers strike. I'm not a member of the unions, nor am I paid to promote any of their products. As a quasi-journalist who reports entertainment information, I will continue providing that service to you at this time. But I fully acknowledge that the movies and series we discuss here on The Couch would not be possible without the writers, and I support those striking in favor of fair treatment and compensation. All right, it's time to see how long you can listen without breaking into song. Let's get started! Tired of having the TikTok songs stuck in your head? We're here to help! Well, kind of.   My brother, good friend of the show, and candlemaker James Walters and I are talking about original songs sung by characters in TV shows and movies that are not musicals or musical episodes. Yes, it's a tiny little niche, but we manage to create quite a long list of songs sure to get stuck in your head. You're welcome in advance.   Of course, this is The Couch, where side notes and rabbit trails are always welcome, so James and I get into a Canadian fishing trip, a favorite Glee performance and a new Glee documentary, some changes going on in James's business, and lots of songs we wanted to include but could not because they didn't meet the parameters we made for ourselves.   As always, we had so much fun talking about music in pop culture and—as always, again—we want to hear your feedback. What songs did we leave out? What pop culture music topic should we tackle next? Tell us all about it over on Instagram or in The Couch Facebook group.   Okay, it's time. Let's get started!   MENTIONED IN THE SHOW: The songs in this YouTube playlist Sing Street on Freevee Ben Schwartz, who plays Jean-Ralphio on Parks and Rec and Yasper on The Afterparty. The 2022 Fantasy/Animation Christmas special is here, with Chris and Alex well and truly ‘walking in the air' (!) for Episode 110 of the podcast as they wonder at the delights of The Snowman (Dianne Jackson, 1982), the 26-minute television special released on Channel 4 in the early 1980s and based on Raymond Briggs' picture book. Joining them for this tale of festive fantasy and to celebrate the film's 40th anniversary is Dr James Walters, who is Reader in Film and Television Studies in the Department of Film and Creative Writing at the University of Birmingham. James' work embraces film and television aesthetics, and he is the author of two monographs regularly cited on the podcast - Fantasy Film: A Critical Introduction (2011) and Alternative Worlds in Hollywood Cinema (2008) - among other recent work on television comedy and performance. Listen as they discuss the relationship between British and Hollywood fantasy cinema in the 1980s; the contribution of Channel 4 to the evolution of British television animation; depth, energy, movement, and sincerity in The Snowman's cosy construction of fantasy, and the spectators' ability to ‘take off' with its defining images of flight; childhood and the power of snow as an enchanting (if always fleeting) force; texture, detail, and stillness in Brigg's original drawings; divisions between interior/order and exterior/chaos; and the way that fantasy - like Christmas - can mean different things to different people. Oh, and there's a bit about David Bowie too. Happy holidays! **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

And finally, is this episode going to get a whole bunch of songs stuck in your head? Yes, both, and absolutely. You're welcome.   My brother and good friend of the show, James Walters, is back on the couch this week to help me create an exhaustive list of the very best Disney songs ever. We've got historical context, musical backgrounds, spreadsheets, and list-making parameters galore, so buckle up! We're about to get real nerdy about Disney music.   Of course, though we try to focus on this very important topic of the day, this is still The Couch, where side notes and rabbit trails are welcome. When I say the words, “the soundtrack of your childhood,” what music pops into your head? If you're anything like several members of The Couch community, I'm going to bet your list includes the Beach Boys, 80s or 90s country, and the forbidden Madonna. But maybe yours is different than ours! I can't wait to compare notes.   But first, my brother, candle maker extraordinaire, and friend of the show, James Walters, joins me to compare notes on the childhood we allegedly shared and wonder at how a) we have some very different childhood musical memories despite being only three years apart and b) we have now basically turned into our parents with our love for soft rock and actual oldies (and by “oldies,” I mean 50s, 60s, and 70s; don't you dare suggest Bon Jovi falls in that category). We also share lots of soundtracks from listeners, which is super fun.   Before we jump in, I will acknowledge a couple things up front. First, we recorded this on one microphone sitting across my dining room table, so the sound is a little wonky. And second, we recorded this episode the morning after the tragic shooting in a Texas elementary school and we are not quite ourselves. We did our best to rally, because we believe there's great value in the light and lovely things of this world, even on our hardest, darkest days. But if you think we seem a little bit on edge, that's why.   And of course, because this is The Couch (where rabbit trails and side notes are always welcome), we also get into word games, our favorite sitcoms to rewatch, more childhood memories than you asked for, and also, call your senators. Believe it or not, it was still a good time, and I think we can have fun with this one. My brother is back on the podcast to talk about musical TV shows, episodes, and scenes -- and we are so proud of ourselves for not breaking into song and dance a single time. It's a miracle! (Yes, I did sing that in my head.) Because we are both super psyched about the new NBC show, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (you can watch the pilot here), we decided to deep dive into all of the best and all of our favorite (sometimes the same thing, but not always) singing and dancing on TV. Well, not all of it. This is already a supersized episode and that's with some strict parameters! While we certainly would have loved to chat (fine. GUSH.) about every single note sung or played on television in the history of ever, we had to limit ourselves a bit. So today we are sharing musical shows, episodes, and scenes from scripted shows only and almost exclusively from the past 20 years. And it had to be a thing where the characters actually did the singing, rather than a soundtrack or even lip syncing. If that's your jam (musical pun intended), this episode is for you. Enjoy!
