Postpartum is one of the hardest periods of many women's lives. From the sleep deprivation to the massive identity shift, to the healing and hormonal changes for birthing mothers, there's a reason most new moms find themselves feeling completely unprepared. So what happens when you're in this already life-changing time, and then the world shatters from underneath you? We talk a lot at Undefining Motherhood about how to support moms, and today's special guest tells stories that take that support to a whole new level.  Ali Garfinkel was still in the thick of those postpartum days when she received a devastating cancer diagnosis, and her story is one we all need to hear. It's one of resilience and hope, but also one that teaches us how we can truly show up for one another when it's needed most. How the act of just “being there”—be it physically or emotionally—can move mountains in people's lives.  Join me as we learn from Ali about walking through hardship, accepting help from our communities, and how to truly support each other in the hardest of times. If you feel moved to support other families like Ali's, it'd mean the world to me if you could make a small donation here: undefiningmotherhood.com/lls  The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) provides the kind of support Ali talks about receiving from her own community in this episode. I've connected with families who've received family support, patient advocacy, co-pay assistance, and funding for travel for medical care and clinical trials from LLS. Welcome to GRUFFtalk where each week we take a deep dive into all the ways we can feel better, look better, live better, and age better.   This week host Barbara Hannah Grufferman talks with an incredible woman who had a busy life as a wife and mother, and a full career as a lawyer -- and then in 2012 was diagnosed with leukemia. She had every right and reason to put that proverbial blanket over her head and stay there.   Instead, what she did with this diagnosis was . . . well . . . pretty incredible. I think her story will resonate and motivate all of you to seize every single day to help make life here on earth . . . and especially in our oceans . . . much, much better.   Lynne Fletcher O'Brien's career over the past thirty years has been primarily in health care in the private, public and non-profit sector. As a lawyer, health care and patient advocate and cancer survivor, her work most recently was with then-Vice President Biden's Cancer Moonshot program.   Four years ago, Lynne formed ‘Line in the Sand' combining all of her passions – her love of the ocean and water sports and her commitment to help cure cancer and to preserve the oceans. Lynne found many women were not participating in the activities they love because they could not find swimwear that looked good and that they could wear comfortably and confidently around others while simultaneously protecting themselves from the sun. ‘Line in the Sand' is a line of high end active/waterwear and edited accessories that take a stand for empowering women and the planet. UV swim leggings and sun tops are made from recycled materials and 100% of the profits go to cancer and ocean organizations.   KEY LINKS:  Learn More About Lynne and ‘Line in the Sand': www.lineinthesand.com  Article About ‘Line in the Sand' in Oprah magazine:  https://www.oprahdaily.com/style/a43431957/adams-style-sheet-swimsuits/  Article in Katie Couric's Daily Newsletter:  https://katiecouric.com/shopping/style/best-vacation-outfits-resortwear/?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=WUC_Tuesday&utm_term=all_users  A Few of the Not-for-Profit Organizations that are Supported By ‘Line in the Sand':   Sea Legacy: https://www.sealegacy.org/  Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS): www.lls.org  Connect with Barbara:  Website: https://www.barbarahannahgrufferman.com   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BarbaraHannahGruffermanAuthor  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/barbarahannahgrufferman/  Learn more about your ad choices. 4 Reasons Realtors Are Hated So Much

Do you fear that you are amongst the most hated professions as a real estate agent? If so, you are not alone. Many agents face the challenge of overcoming negative perceptions and stereotypes in the industry. In fact, real estate agents ranked as the second-most-hated profession, right behind politicians. Why is this the case? What causes such animosity towards those who help people buy and sell homes? On this week's episode of the Massive Agent Podcast, host Dustin Brohm explores the four main reasons why real estate agents are so often disliked. One of the primary reasons is poor communication skills. Many agents fail to effectively communicate with clients and colleagues, leading to frustration and confusion. Another factor is a lack of transparency in the industry. Clients often feel like they are kept in the dark about important details and information regarding their transaction.Despite these negative perceptions, real estate agents do not have to be hated. In fact, by being proactive and transparent with clients, agents have the potential to change the way people view their profession. By improving communication skills and being more upfront about the buying and selling process, agents can build trust and form long-lasting relationships with clients. So, do you want to be a hated real estate agent, or a respected and trusted professional in your community? Please help Dustin raise $100K by June 2nd for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS): www.MassiveGiving.comGet your ticket to the Agent Rise Summit in Fort Meyers, FL, May 21-23: https://agentrisecoaching.com/summitProud member of the Broke Agent Media network***********************Sponsored by: Follow Up Boss, the CRM of choice for agents ready to scale quickly. What's more, recent studies show that Black Americans are significantly less likely to receive the latest treatments, and are more likely to experience treatment delays. We believe every patient deserves to receive the best care and support possible while we work tirelessly toward cures. PATIENT SUPPORT IS CRITICAL TO BETTER OUTCOMES FOR BLOOD CANCER PATIENTS Free, personalized support from The Leukemia & Lymphoma connects patients with resources, clinical trials, financial assistance and more Approximately every 3 minutes one person in the U.S. is diagnosed with a blood cancer – with leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma as the most diagnosed types. And having blood cancer now is tougher than ever. When faced with the unexpected news of a cancer diagnosis, many become paralyzed by fear and distressed by the enormity of decisions that need to be made, especially now as the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted every aspect of cancer care and daily life as we know it. In addition to the pandemic, the rapid emergence of breakthrough discoveries in cancer treatments has amplified the need for patient access to accurate, up-to-date information, education and support to help navigate these complex diseases, treatment options, including clinical trials and financial assistance. Every day, Information Specialists at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) hear from blood cancer patients with concerns and questions about their diagnosis, seeking support and guidance about issues such as treatment options and costs, coping with the emotional and psychological impact of a blood cancer diagnosis, the impact of COVID-19 on care and treatment, how to safely connect with others who have experienced blood cancer and much more. As the leading source of free information and support for blood cancer patients, families, caregivers and healthcare professionals, LLS’s Information Specialists are highly trained, oncology professionals, who spend hours providing critical one-on-one support throughout the blood cancer journey into survivorship. And while patients can turn to LLS at any stage of their blood cancer journey, it’s critical for LLS to connect with newly-diagnosed patients and those in underserved communities to help ensure better outcomes for their diagnoses. Nikki Yuill, LCSW, Director of the Information Resource Center at LLS, is available on Tuesday, January 12 from 7:30am - 12:30pm ET to talk about how LLS’s supports blood cancer patients when they need it the most, including the unique challenges they face due to their diagnosis and the COVID-19 pandemic

A blood cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming – whether you are a patient, caregiver, family member or friend. However, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) has a variety of resources available for those affected by blood cancer.   In this week’s episode, we spoke with, the associate director of the Information Resource Center at LLS – an organization that pioneers groundbreaking research in blood cancer, as well as resources like financial support, support groups for patients and caregivers, as well as the LLS Patient Community. As part of this community, patients can join online chats or speak with a counselor.   “What you need when you are first diagnosed may not be what you need in a month or two. So, it changes. And this is why we encourage people to reach out to us,” said Rajotte. “First, it’s important to understand what you are dealing with…being able to reach out and get that information and support so that you don’t feel like you’re going through this alone. The more support you get the easier it will be for you to get through (your blood cancer journey).”   For more information, visit lls.org, call 1-800-955-4572 or email infocenter@lls.org.

On this episode of “The Shine Strategy,” I’m proud to introduce to you a dynamic woman and longtime dear friend of mine, Lila Javan. We attended high school together at Northfield Mount Hermon, and who would have known all those years ago that Lila would become a 3x cancer survivor and the founder of Climb2Cure for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), raising over $2 million to date for cancer research. In 2010, Lila’s life was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukemia, AML. After intense treatment and a bone marrow transplant, Lila went almost four years of being cancer-free but relapsed two more times: in 2014, and again in 2018. She has survived aggressive chemotherapy treatment and multiple bone marrow and stem cell transplants—one from her sister and also from a stranger in Germany (thanks to Be The Match). Just before her relapse in 2014, Lila was planning a solo trip to Africa to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. The very week that she was booking flights, she discovered that her cancer was back. While in the hospital, a friend designed a window frame with a beautiful photograph of Kilimanjaro in it and hung it on the wall opposite her bed. Throughout her treatment, Lila would stare at that window and visualize herself climbing the mountain. Her doctors and nurses all asked about the picture and soon her solo trip became a group trip comprised of 12 doctors, nurses, therapists and friends. Lila then reached out to LLS to see if they could do the trek as a fundraiser for research, and "Climb2Cure" was born. Her solo climb evolved into a new LLS Team In Training fundraising platform that will continue for years to come and is expanding to other mountain tops. Lila's team raised an astonishing $133,000 for their first climb. To date, climbers have raised over $2M for cancer research. Lila’s strength is unbelievable. She is not only one of the physically strongest people I know, but her will and spirit are a shining example of how the energy you carry can literally heal you. Using visualization, she was able to look at her treatment as “training” which powered her through the rough days. She was able to run the LA marathon a mere 6 months after her first stem cell transplant! You won’t want to miss her unbelievable story and learn what you can do to continue to support the fight against cancer. September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month and thanks to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) – the largest nonprofit dedicated to fighting blood cancers – survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled and even quadrupled since 1960. But despite these advances, more than a third of blood cancer patients still do not survive five years after their diagnosis. These sobering statistics point out the urgent need to get involved in the fight against blood cancer: Every three minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with a blood cancer. Every nine minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer. Blood cancers are the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. Today, more than 1.3 million people in the U.S. are living with, or in remission from, a blood cancer. Blood cancer research has been at the forefront of lifesaving discoveries beginning with chemotherapy and LLS has paved the way for groundbreaking research including immunotherapies, genomics and precision medicine – which emerged from researching blood cells, which are easier to access and study than cancer cells in solid tumors. “Beating Cancer Is In Our Blood” is a new platform highlighting LLS’s resolve to end blood cancers and showcasing the breakthroughs in blood cancer research which are now saving lives and being tested in clinical trials for other cancers and diseases, such as brain, breast, kidney, liver, lung, ovarian, pancreatic and prostate cancer, as well as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes. Research breakthroughs in blood cancer treatments are occurring at an ever-increasing rate; last year alone saw 18 new U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approvals for blood cancers, and LLS supported 15 of them. Emily Dumler from Shawnee, Kansas, a 37-year-old mother of three young children, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in August 2013. After a whirlwind of intense treatments including chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant and months of hospitalization, Emily relapsed soon after each treatment and in 2015 was given a devastating prognosis – doctors said she had six months to live. But then, Emily received a glimmer of hope when her doctors told her of a potential new treatment. In July 2015, Emily became the third patient in the world enrolled a clinical trial for CAR T-cell therapy that was made possible by LLS funding. The revolutionary therapy was a success! On Heels on American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting (June 2-6) a Look at Latest Advances in Cancer Research and an Inspiring Story The annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the largest global cancer conference of the year, brings together the worldâ??s leading cancer researchers to share the latest research data and clinical breakthroughs for all types of cancers. During this media tour, Dr. Louis J. DeGennaro, President and CEO of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), the worldâ??s largest blood cancer nonprofit organization, is joined by leukemia survivor Loriana Hernandez-Aldama, to discuss cancer advances emerging from the ASCO annual meeting and LLSâ??s innovative approach to treating a deadly cancer. Hernandez-Aldama will share her inspiring story of going from TV health reporter to patient, and her work to spread the word about the urgent need for better cancer treatments and cures. Advances in the blood cancers â?? leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and other blood malignancies â?? which comprise approximately 10 percent of all new cancer cases diagnosed last year continue to be a key focus of the ASCO meeting, as new approaches to blood cancer therapy emerge with dizzying speed. Precision medicine, targeting the therapy to the patientâ??s individual genetic profile, and immunotherapy, harnessing the patientâ??s immune system to fight cancer, are drawing the most attention of the cancer community. More than 1.2 million people are either living with or in remission from a blood cancer in the United States. And among the most deadly of all blood cancers is acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which kills more than 10,000 patients in the United States each year. Loriana is one of those patients who is fortunate to have beaten the odds. When Loriana, a fitness and health reporter, was diagnosed with AML while undergoing fertility treatments to have a 2nd baby, she was shocked to learn that the standard therapies for AML had not changed in 40 years. But now she is eager to help other patients by raising awareness about how advances in technology, diagnostics and new experimental drugs in the pipeline may be changing this, and how The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is leading the way through a groundbreaking precision medicine clinical trial: the Beat AML Master Trial. LLS has invested more than $1 billion in research to find cures for blood cancer patients, and this investment has played a role in advancing nearly every therapy used to treat blood cancer patients. The Beat AML Master Trial is one of LLSâ??s most important current initiatives.

https://www.otsuka.co.jp/en/company/globalnews/detail.php?id=238&date=2017-03-07 Every year since 2000, Astex employees and their families have taken part in the Light The Night of East Bay event in Walnut Creek in Northern California to raise much needed funds and awareness to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). The LLS, founded in 1949, is the largest voluntary organization in the US dedicated to research, finding cures and ensuring access to treatment for blood cancer patients. In 1964 the survival rate for childhood leukemia was just 3%, now thanks in part to research, funding, and better support for patients from the society the survival rate is 91%. Since its inception, the society has contributed over $1billion towards improving the lives and outcomes for blood cancer patients. Light The Night draws nearly one million participants over the year to join one of LLS’s 160+ evening events across the US. Participants walk the course holding illuminated lanterns in three colours: white lanterns are carried by patients and survivors; red lanterns by supporters; gold by participants who are walking in memory of a loved one. In speaking about Light The Night, the East Bay Campaign Director for LLS, Andrea Orozco said, “When LLS walks, cancer runs”. Last year, Astex employees raised $44,393 for LLS through fund raising events and the Astex corporate match program. 57 employees from Team Astex and their family members joined the event to raise awareness for blood cancers. To date, Astex and its employees have contributed in excess of $465,000 to LLS activities such as Light The Night, Patient Assistance Programs, and educational events and grants. In addition, an Astex employee has served on the local board or was a member of the LLS organizing committee for the past 15 years. In recognition of their efforts, executives and staff members of Astex received awards from the society, including one for being the top corporate fundraising team and one for the most money raised by an individual. To Astex these activities are more than about raising money for the society, as the President and Chief Medical Officer of Astex, Mohammad Azab explains, “Every employee at Astex is deeply committed to the search for a cure to blood cancers and we are proud to support the mission of the LLS in improving the lives of patients and their families”. Otsuka affiliate Astex is a leader in innovative drug discovery and development. The company is committed to the fight against cancer as well as disorders of the central nervous system.
