In this Product Spotlight, Tracy, host of The Impact Farming Show, chats with Clem Collet—a partner at West End Tire and a farmer from Manitoba—about the importance and process of tire section repair for agricultural equipment. Clem dives into the significant cost-saving benefits of repairing tires instead of replacing them and how this repair method helps keep farming operations running smoothly. Episode Highlights: - About Clem Tracy kicks off the conversation by learning more about Clem's background and journey into both farming and tire repair. - About West End Tire and its Role in Supporting the Farming Industry  Clem shares the story of West End Tire, explaining how their services have become essential for farmers, especially in keeping costly equipment running efficiently. - What is Tire Section Repair & the Process Clem details what tire section repairs are, how they differ from regular tire repairs, and why it's a superior solution for severe tire damage. - Cost Savings of Tire Section Repair  In this segment, Clem discusses how tire section repairs can save farmers a significant amount of money, as the process is only a fraction of the cost of replacing a tire entirely. - Types of Farm Equipment You Can Work With Clem explains that West End Tire works with all types of agricultural equipment tires, offering solutions across a wide range of machinery. - How Long Does It Take to Do a Tire Section Repair? Clem gives insight into the timeline of the repair process and how quickly farmers can expect their tires to be back in action. - Rock Solid Warranty and Tire Longevity Clem talks about the strong warranty that West End Tire offers and how, after a section repair, a tire can last for its full lifespan as though it were new. - How Can Farmers Get in Touch with You? Clem provides contact details for farmers interested in learning more or having their agricultural tires repaired. What is Tire Section Repair? A tire section repair is a specialized process that addresses moderate to severe tire damage, including issues with sidewalls, faces, and shoulders. Unlike typical tire repairs that work for light damage, tire section repairs can restore a tire to its original function, potentially extending its lifespan for a fraction of the cost of a full replacement. These repairs require specific tools and skilled technicians, making it more appropriate for larger, specialized agricultural equipment. Tune in to hear more about how tire section repairs can benefit your farm, save you money, and keep your machinery in top shape! Thanks for tuning in, Tracy Brunet =================================

One of the biggest myths about stopping birth control is that everything will just snap back to normal in a couple of weeks. But the truth? That's not always the case. Your body has been coasting along with external hormones, and now it's trying to remember how to do its thing solo. It's like waking up from a long nap—you might feel groggy before you feel refreshed. How Long Does It Take to Adjust? There's no one-size-fits-all answer because:  ✔️ The type of birth control you were on matters (pill, IUD, implant—oh my!) ✔️ How long you've been on it plays a role ✔️ Your genetics, detox pathways, and gut health all factor in ✔️ Your body's natural ability to regulate hormones varies Some women get their cycles back right away, while others wait months. Frustrating? Yes. But understanding your body's unique rhythm is key. Supporting Your Body Through the Transition If you want to set yourself up for success, here are a few ways to give your body the love it needs:

Over the last decade, there's been an increase in the number of people, particularly young adults, who struggle with low moods, distractibility, and anxiety and consequent difficulties with getting their life on track and making progress in work, friendship, and romance. In addressing these difficulties, people are often given or adopt a mental health diagnosis, and look for a solution in therapy and/or medication. My guest isn't opposed to these remedies. She is herself a clinical psychologist who's maintained a practice for a quarter century that specializes in treating clients in their twenties. But Dr. Meg Jay, who's also the author of The Twentysomething Treatment, believes that a lot of what young adults, and in fact adults of all ages, struggle with, aren't disorders that need to be treated, but problems that can be solved. In the first half of our conversation, Meg explains what's behind the decline in mental health for young adults and how it's bigger than just smartphones. We discuss the dangers of self-diagnosis, the potential downsides of using medications to treat mental health issues, and why she advocates for "skills over pills." In the second half of our conversation, we talk about how mental health gets better when we get better at life, and what skills twentysomethings, and many older adults, need to develop, including the skills of thinking, feeling, working, socializing, and even cooking. We also discuss how porn is affecting the young men in her practice and an alternative to being a self-assurance junkie.Resources Related to the PodcastMeg's last appearance on the AoM podcast: Episode #51 — The Defining Decade AoM series on not wasting your twentiesStudy on whether antidepressants work better than placebosAoM series on depressionSunday Firesides: Congratulations, You're a Human!AoM Podcast #741: The Exercise Prescription for Depression and AnxietyAoM Podcast #772: How Long Does It Take to Make Friends (And How Does That Process Work, Anyway)?Connect With Meg JayMeg's website

We've all heard by now just how important strong relationships are to our health and well-being. But a lot of the common advice and conventional wisdom out there about how to build stronger relationships doesn't end up taking us closer to that goal.My guest today has spent years sorting through what really builds better friendships, reignites love, and helps people get closer to others, and he shares these research-backed insights in his new book: Plays Well with Others: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Relationships Is (Mostly) Wrong. Eric shares what he's learned today on the show, beginning with why we're good at figuring out someone's personality from the moment we meet them, but bad at reading their thoughts and feelings, and how to get better at the latter by making other people more readable, as well as how to make a better first impression yourself. We then turn to what makes friendship a unique relationship that makes us uniquely happy, and the two "costly signals" that most develop friendship. We also get into why friends we feel ambivalent about are actually worse for us than outright enemies. We spend the last part of our conversation on how the modern age is both the worst and the best time for marriage, and how the key to ensuring that yours is one of the happiest in history is maintaining positive sentiment override.Resources Related to the PodcastEric's previous appearance on the show: #322 — Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) WrongAoM Article & Podcast: Why Your First Impression MattersAoM Podcast: #567: Understanding the Wonderful, Frustrating Dynamic of FriendshipHow to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale CarnegieAoM Podcast #772: How Long Does It Take to Make Friends?Arthur Aron's 36 Questions That Lead to LoveThe All-or-Nothing Marriage: How the Best Marriages Work by Eli FinkelAoM Articles: Why the Secret of a Happy, Successful Marriage Is Treating It Like a Bank Account and The Best Ways to Fund Your Relationship Bank AccountAoM Article & Podcast: How and Why to Hold a Weekly Marriage MeetingConnect With Eric BarkerEric's Website

Tax Relief with Timalyn Bowens
How to Sell Your Home with a Tax Lien

Tax Relief with Timalyn Bowens

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2022 34:31

Episode 4:  In this episode, Timalyn provides information for both the sellers and the buyers who are involved in a real estate transaction with a tax lien.  If there is a tax lien on the property, it could cause a significant delay in the sale, but there are options available to help avoid or minimize the delay.  Let's join Timalyn to learn more. Timalyn discusses what a tax lien is and how it could affect you, in Episode 3.  If you're trying to sell a house, a tax lien could be a major obstacle.  In this market, a seller may be able to realize a significant profit, if they can get the transaction completed.  If you're trying to purchase a home that has a tax lien, Timalyn will address this issue later in the episode (so stick around). How Do They Know a Tax Lien Is Involved? It's possible the seller may have forgotten about the lien, or not realized the impact a tax lien can have on the sale of a home.  When the title is run in preparation for the sale, a tax lien will show up.  Timalyn comments that the title company, mortgage lender or even the realtor will often recommend the seller simply contact their tax professional.  This isn't the best route, because if their tax professional could fix the problem it would already be fixed. All tax professionals do not know how to remove a tax lien. Tax Lien Basics If the IRS places a lien on a taxpayer's account the lien is filed at the County Clerk's office and made public record. This informs all creditors (and potential creditors) that the IRS has priority in debt repayment.  The IRS will step in ahead of all other creditors. This means a lender may lose their interest in the house if the IRS issues a tax Levy, and seizes the property due to a tax debt. Ways to Sell Your Home with a Tax Lien Timalyn recommends contacting the Centralized Lien Office at 1-800-913-6050 to verify the amount of the lien, how much longer the lien will last, and a payoff amount.  Whether you intend to sell or buy the property, you can fill out the Application for Certificate of Discharge of Property from a Federal Tax Lien.  You'll need to have specific information, including the amount of equity the seller has in the home. The IRS will review the amount of the tax lien, the proposed sale price and current equity.  This information will help to show the IRS they will be able to get paid, after the sale. What Is Discharging a Lien? The IRS may give permission for the sale to happen. A lien discharge removes the lien from one piece of property. When selling a home, the IRS discharges the lien but the taxpayer must still agree to pay them from the proceeds.  What is Lien Subordination? A lien subordination allows another creditor to step ahead of the IRS. The IRS maintains priority whenever a tax lien exists.   However, in certain circumstances, such as with a subordination, the IRS steps aside allowing a taxpayer to obtain a mortgage or other type of loan. Timalyn Can Handle the Application as POA When someone decides to hire Timalyn Bowens to represent them in a tax relief matter, Timalyn will be appointed Power of Attorney (POA) to act on behalf of her client.  The application and documentation are complicated.  Some individuals find it easier to simply let Timalyn handle the process.  This Tax POA authority is granted via tax Form 2848. How Long Does It Take to Get a Federal Tax Lien Discharged? Timalyn explains that the process typically takes 45 days.  You should consider this period, especially if a buyer has already expressed an interest in your property.  Time is of the essence.   You may want get Timalyn involved as early as possible. Schedule a Virtual Appointment with Timalyn If you'd like to speak with Timalyn Bowens about your particular situation, you can sign up for a tax relief evaluation phone call at https://www.bowenstaxsolutions.com/.  Look for the blue, Book Now button. During this call, you and Timalyn will evaluate your issues, determine if it's a good fit, and decide whether or not to work together.  Can You Make a Profit with a Tax Lien? Yes.  It's possible to still walk away with a profit if you sell your home with a tax lien.  Timalyn comments that there are companies low-balling offers to sellers when a tax lien is involved.  These companies understand sellers often don't understand their options or the process itself.   If you're willing to complete and submit the application, or have Timalyn do it on your behalf, you may still be able to walk away with a profit.  You don't have to accept a low-ball offer just because a federal tax lien is involved.  You have options.  You can empower yourself to move forward with cash, after the sale.  You can stay in control of the process. Can You Refinance Your Home with a Tax Lien? Yes.  If you have equity in your home, Timalyn explains that it may be possible for you to refinance.  The mortgage company may have concerns due to the IRS' involvement, but again you have options.  Can I Get a Federal Tax Lien Discharge if I Don't Have a Home to Sell? Even if you don't own a home, if you have a tax lien, you may have problems trying to get a loan to buy a home.  Remember, when the IRS attaches a tax lien, it includes all of your assets.  This can include the money in your bank account and 401(k) funds.  It's important to get your federal tax lien removed.  Contact the Centralized Lien Office at 1-800-913-6050 to verify the amount of your lien.  If it's less than $25,000, you may be able to get it removed via a request for a lien withdrawal.  This will require that you make some payments and set up a direct debit arrangement with the IRS before the public notice is removed.  This enables the IRS to be paid on a monthly basis. Back Tax Negotiation Checklist Timalyn provides a checklist to help you to prepare for negotiations with the IRS.  You need to have your facts straight and be prepared.  Yes, Timalyn can handle the negotiations for you.  Again, you'll want to set up an appointment with Timalyn.  Timalyn explains that a Federal Tax Lien doesn't directly affect your credit score, but it may influence a lender's decision to offer you a loan.  If the lien exists, the creditor understands that the IRS would get paid before they do. The denial of a loan based on this will affect your credit score. A Federal Tax Lien Can Impact Your Business Interestingly, a Federal Tax Lien on your personal-side can negatively impact your business.  For the IRS, they are connected.  It may limit or deny your ability to sell business property or to obtain a business loan. Getting a tax lien removed can provide you some breathing room.  In Episode 5, Timalyn will discuss a Federal Tax Levy. As we conclude Episode 4, we'd like to encourage you to connect with Timalyn on social media .  You'll be able to subscribe to this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and many other podcast platforms.   Remember, Timalyn Bowens is America's Favorite EA.  She's here to fill the tax literacy gap, one taxpayer at a time.  Thanks for listening to today's episode. How Long Does It Take to Run an Equity Crowdfunding Campaign? Hello, this is Hall T. Martin with the Startup Funding Espresso -- your daily shot of startup funding and investing. In running an equity crowdfunding campaign you'll need to budget time to prepare for the campaign as well as run it. Preparations include applying to launch a fundraise campaign. This requires completing a Form C and setting up your campaign on a crowdfunding portal or your own website. You'll need to prepare the campaign documents which include a pitch deck, key points about the fundraise, digital media assets such as ads and banners, and a campaign plan. Then you'll need to run the campaign launching to your network first. Afterward, you'll draw the circle wider to include investors who are interested in your sector. For investors expressing interest, you'll need to follow up to answer their questions. In closing a campaign you'll need to work through the fund's transfer process. It typically takes two months to apply to launch a campaign, followed by three months to prepare the campaign documents and digital assets. Then you'll need to run several sub-campaigns to various investor groups taking one to two months each. Closing typically takes one to two months to complete the fund transfers due to paperwork issues. For a $1M fundraise, it will take one calendar year to raise it. Thank you for joining us for the Startup Funding Espresso where we help startups and investors connect for funding.Let's go startup something today. ___________________________________ For more episodes from Investor Connect, please visit the site at:   Check out our other podcasts here:   For Investors check out:   For Startups check out:   For eGuides check out:   For upcoming Events, check out   For Feedback please contact info@tencapital.group   Please , share, and leave a review. How long does it take for a voice to become familiar? In this episode I feature a paper by Holmes and colleagues who investigated the extent to which recognition and intelligibility of a voice improve after different lengths of voice training. And they found that speech intelligibility can be dramatically improved with as little as 1 hr of training. An important insight for training aircraft pilots, for instance, who need to perceive speech accurately despite the noises around them.   Full citation: Holmes, E., To, G., & Johnsrude, I. S. (2021). Leveraging Strategic Relationships Tanner Bickelhaupt, CEO and Founder of the Tanbic Company   Growing a Business Outward, Not Upward (1:24) – When first bringing an attorney onto Bickelhaupt's team, he says he considered things like deal structures and experience. Tanbic's attorney and CPA, as well as his management team all contribute something specific. He says outsourcing things on the operations side has been more affordable and has lead to better sharing of ideas. “You can have a really big team by having relationships where they're on the payroll but we're only paying for what we're using specifically. Attorneys are very expensive, CPAs are very expensive, and it's just trying to be as efficient with the dollars as possible. That all flows back to the investor anyway,” said Bickelhaupt.  (3:16) – Patrick Antrim, CEO of Multifamily Leadership, brings up that growth isn't about headcount; business growth can be seen through cash flow or through other results. “The biggest competitive advantage is that it allows everyone to do what they're good at,” said Bickelhaupt. “So I'm not focused on the legal or on the operating side because we can scale up and add 5,000 units in a week with a back-end office, or we could scale down and the company maintains the same level of margin. That means that all of our fair housing is already in place there, so we're not focused on that… We get to focus on what we like to do, and that's working with our managers, leasing apartments. And I think that our managers now, even though their job scope is perhaps a little bit bigger, it allows them to be a little more hyper-focused most of the time on what's important, and that's leasing apartments.” (5:30) – “Do you see benefit in hiring the ‘who' that knows the ‘how' versus trying to become the expert,” asked Antrim.  “That's the only way you can buy experience, is to partner,” answered Bickelhaupt. He says that's true even at the broker level. He explains, the broker that gets the listing will usually remain loyal to the seller, since that's where the broker gets paid.  Antrim points out that those brokers can give you intel beyond what an internal team can provide. How Long Does It Take to Develop Those Relationships?  (7:30) – Building relationships is tough; everyone is busy. The length of time it takes to form them depends on size. “If someone just says, ‘I want to do an apartment syndication and buy 200 units, Class B or Class A right now in Phoenix,' it's going to be really hard to get a broker's attention if he doesn't already know you. They have a plethora of buyers. It's a seller's market right now. But if you're new and you want to buy 20 units, there's brokers out there that specialize in that. So it's just understanding what you want to do and what your capabilities are,” said Bickelhaupt.  Establishing credibility could help you with the lender. But keep in mind, the broker has probably already seen the deal you're approaching about, and has already chosen to pass. “When I first got started, that was the difficult, uneasy feeling of, ‘Why am I seeing this?' Because the broker is going to be loyal to the customer that's bought a lot of deals from him, rightfully so,” said Bickelhaupt. “So it's just more work, and it takes more time.”

Dr. Moore's Story   I was an all-American college athlete, and I felt strong all through college. Dr. Moore said at the time he didn't understand why he hit that wall after college and barely had energy. During chiropractic school, he started eating clean and was feeling amazing.  Just as Dr. Moore began to feel lively again, it all crashed down. He was fatigued and had erectile dysfunction in his twenties. As he went to see doctors, he noticed that they kept wanting to prescribe medications for the symptoms – rather than looking at why it's happening. No one had an answer for him. Until he met with a doctor in Wisconsin that was able to diagnose and treat his Lyme disease.  Now, he feels healthy and strong.   What is Lyme Disease?    Lyme technically is a bacteria that can burrow very well in your tissue. You can get it from any type of organism that bites: mosquito, tick, spider, flea, etc. Lyme can also be transferred from mother to daughter.  While it's just a bacteria like strep, Lyme is a little bit more challenging to take care of because it doesn't stay in your bloodstream. It burrows, which means it goes after the white tissue and the brain tissue. Some studies show that it gets into your brain in twelve hours. Whereas a lot of infections can not get into the brain that easily.  Because of its burrowing quality, chronic Lyme doesn't respond well to antibiotics. Once Lyme is in your body, it weakens your system. “I call it Lyme and friends,” Dr. Moore said because this disease almost always has co-infections.  How To Know If You Have Lyme    If you have just Lyme, you may never know. Your body may be able to handle it. However, once your immune system starts to weaken, whether it's from emotional stress or a virus, then it may start to show itself.  The number one symptom of Lyme is migratory pain, which is pain that just kind of moves around your body. One day you may be hurting in your back, and the next day the pain will move to your arm.  The next sign is headaches, especially ones right along the back of your neck. Numbness that makes no sense at all is also a symptom of Lyme disease. Some other patterns of those with Lyme are general fatigue and achiness in your hands. However, Lyme is called the great mimicker. There are about 150 symptoms of it, and often doctors will fall back on Lyme when it may be something else that's causing these symptoms.       What Causes Most Diseases in the World Dr. Moore breaks down what causes most diseases.  Toxins  These are things like chemicals in your food and mold.  Infections   This is Lyme and all its friends.  Trauma  This factor includes physical and emotional trauma.     How Long Does It Take to Get Rid of Lyme?    This is an eighteen-month to two-year process. It's not a fast process because you have to work through building the body back up, optimizing the immune system, and getting the mitochondria healthy.  While you do those things, you're also working on healing all your infections that came with Lyme. “I don't typically see somebody that has less than 8-10 infections when they come into my clinic at least,” Dr. Moore said.    How Do You Know if There's Mold in Your House?    Look where there potentially is dampness. So look around your sink, in your bathroom, windows, washers, and plants.  One mold test I recommend is Ermi. It's a dust sample that runs for about $300, but I think it's the best thing on the market. With mold cases, a lot of the time it has to do with the host. Two people can live under the same roof and one person gets ill, while the other isn't affected at all. Lyme and mold have to have the right hosts.  Mold is awful for your immune system. Parasites One of Dr. Moore's friends said that if you have a pulse, you probably have parasites. That may be an overstatement, but we pick up organisms from our food. We don't just eat food from our backyards. We eat it from around the world.  In the US, we have a lot of sugar in our diets which just feed the yeast and parasites. Many people have digestive tract issues, but we don't take a deeper look at them. It may be parasites. There are thousands of parasites, so consider deworming. Parasites have spent a millennium figuring out how to hide in the guts of different organisms so they don't trigger an immune response. Because there are thousands of parasites, most don't show up on testing.  Don't forget how powerful the human body is though. Our innate body intelligence and the immune system can overcome almost anything if we put in the work.   Making Health Simple Dr. Moore's Answers: What is one action that we can take today after this episode to move us toward becoming superhuman?  Take imperfect action for your health. Start drinking distilled water. That's a simple action for you. Distilled water is the only kind of water that removes some of the radioactive elements that we're finding are absolutely destroying the mitochondria.    What's Next? We have put together a dashboard of all of Dr. Bart's videos, based on health topics, in our Level-Up Health Membership, and the first month is free. This library of health content is low cost, so we can help you on your journey to becoming superhuman!  Not only is it extensive, but it will continue to expand with new videos each month. Some episodes resonate with my crowd more than others, but all of them contain at least a few key takeaways that just about anyone can benefit from (that’s what I tell myself at least). And as cool as that is, it poses a problem for you, my dear listener: Ain’t nobody got time for that. Well okay, some people do make the time to listen to most or even all of my podcasts, but my wizbang analytics tell me that while many listeners tune in on a regular basis, they don’t catch every installment of Muscle for Life and thus miss out on insights that could help them get a little better inside and outside the gym. People have also been saying they’d like me to do more shorter, multi-topic episodes, like my Q&As. And so I got an idea: how about a “best of” series of podcasts that contains a few of the most practical and compelling ideas, tips, and moments from my most popular episodes? This way, people who are new to the show can quickly determine if it’s for them or not, and those who enjoy what I’m doing but don’t have the time or inclination to listen to all of my stuff can still benefit from the discussions and find new episodes to listen to. How To Build Your Summit

The Virtual Summit Podcast

#004 How To Build Your Summit What is the one question to ensure you don't get screwed by a Virtual Summit consultant, plus how to remove 90% of the time needed to build out a summit with one single solution. If you are just joining us on The Virtual Summit Podcast, I highly recommend that you go and listen to the first three episodes to get yourself acquainted with the podcast. Remember, you can get the shownotes and resources at:  podcast.virtualsummits.com/004 and podcast.virtualsummits.com/resources   This is going to be a little bit longer of an episode but could possibly be one of the most valuable episodes you could listen to.  We are going to be talking specifically about the different ways you can build out your summit, what that looks like, and how to avoid a complete disaster.   It's an episode you want to listen to till the very end if you are serious about hosting a summit.   Four Ways To Build Out Your Summit: Pay someone else to build it Custom build it yourself (wordpress) Use a generic tool or software (ClickFunnels, Kajabi, Thinkific) Use the Virtual Summits Software  - Makes hosting a summit easier than ever before   Physical Components Of A Summit: 1) Landing Page 2) Thank You /Upsell Page 3) Summit Home Page 4) Individual Speaker Pages 5) Bonus/Gifts 6) Sponsors/Resources 7) Sales Page 8) Thank You Page     Additional Aspects: FAQ Page Support Page/Help Desk/Contact Page Group Area for group conversation   What Is The Difference Between A Summit Coach And A Summit Consultant? Coaches typically sell online programs that give you the information to host a summit.  Coaches typically don't do anything with you or your summit other than give you the online trainings and sometimes answer ongoing questions. Coaches are going to be much less expensive as you are paying for a program & no assistance.  You still have to build it all yourself. Consultants typically create most of the platform for you and are responsible for running the summit.  Consultants don't typically do anything outside of the summit platform creation and live summit tech support. Consultants are going to be much more expensive depending on the caliber of consultant.   Let's Dive Into The Four Areas Of Building Out Your Summit:    Pay Someone Else To Build It    Only really recommended if you have disposable resources, or you have done several successful summits & know your conversions & can make it profitable.   What The Process Looks Like Find a consultant or coach – They will do an in depth consultation. Understand what you want and are looking for and when you are looking to launch. They tell you the amount you need to pay them and then you agree They handle most of the heavy lifting as far as building out the site – usually with pre packaged templates they have created. You will still have to do all the speaker, affiliate, & sponsor recruiting, management & interviews. You will have to pay for all of the materials being built (usually software that they are an affiliate for) They will help guide you and advise you on insights into the marketing & launching You will have to create all the marketing materials, ads, emails, copy, and  paid advertising. They will handle any technical aspect or issues that arise during the summit. Once the summit ends your arrangement is finished and they are done You will still have to pay the monthly fees for all of the softwares & plugins they used to build your summit. (Usually generating them ongoing revenue until you stop paying).   How Long Does It Take Typically a summit consultant can get most of the summit up and built within 2 – 3 months If they have the ability to work on it full time probably in 1 – 2 months.  However, you will still need the extra 2 – 4 months for speaker recruitment, interviews, and marketing creation.    In total you could most likely launch your summit within 3 months based on your speed of speaker recruitment.     How Much Does it Cost Most good summit consultants are going to cost between $7,000 - $10,000.  High end consultants (or speciality niches) can be upwards of $35,000 - $50,000 & require profit sharing from the earnings of the summit.    Consultants below $3,000 are most likely less experienced or not high quality.      What Are The Downsides The obvious downsides are going to be the costs.  Summits typically don't have huge profit margins from the summit. (Most profits come from post summit income – check out episode 003 for more information on this podcast.virtualsummits.com/003).   So when you are paying out a lot of money to build your summit you are Decreasing your ability to take home the cash Increasing risk of actually losing money if your summit doesn't do well Consultants will typically remove themselves from the direct relationship of the success of the summit (mainly because they can't guarantee it's success and  don't want to be held responsible).  So they will only take responsibility for the creation of the structure, not whether the summit succeeds.  Which means you are ultimately still solely responsible for the success. This is why I typically don't recommend consultants for your first summit.  I think they are a great opportunity after you know you can generate results.  But before then you run the risk of paying a lot of money and ultimately not making it back. Ultimately the downside is the financial costs and the risk.  If these are non issues for you, either because you have the disposable finances, or you are confident in your abilities to create success then this can be a great option for you.   What Are The Upsides You don't have to do any of the work building the summit.  Allows you to move much quicker in launching your summit You have someone with experience who can help guide you You can stay in your zone of genius and let someone else handle the technical aspect You have someone to turn to when something goes wrong or if you have questions.   What Should I Know (or Ask) Before you ever agree to pay anything with a consultant here are the things you should know and ask.   1.  How many summits have you run before (and provide some examples)? Do your research.  Reach out to these summits and ask the hosts about their experience. This could save you from disaster in the long run If they have run less than 5 summits they are newer and pose more risk If they have run more than 10 summits they are most likely experience Anything over 25 is a well experienced consultant. 2.  What are the average results you typically get from your summit? If they can't give you an estimate or average that means they haven't generated any decent results. Find out what summit they got good results with and check with that host.  If they won't tell you which summit then they are lying.  RUN!  Always confirm this with the summit hosts.  Many times consultants will “exaggerate” their results.  3.  When was the last summit you helped create? If it's been more than a few years that is a red flag.  It means this is probably not their main expertise and are just trying to do it on the side to generate extra income. 4.  Where did you learn to create summits? This is more in relationship with question 1.  If they have minimal experience, then how do they know how to run a summit?  If they have had training, then maybe it's worth it, if not then they are just guessing and it's your money that will be the gamble. 5.  What exactly are you going to do and what are you not going to do? Always very important to have in writing exactly what they are responsible for doing (and not doing) to hold them accountable.  This should be done before you pay them anything Afterwards they will opt out of doing more work Additionally this is just good to know so you are aware of what you need to be ready to do. 6.  What happens if for some reason this summit bombs? This is a tough question that no one wants to ask, but honestly is something that needs to be asked.  Are they holding any of the responsibility for this summit to perform well?  If not, then that is a LOT of risk on your shoulders.   They should be willing to at least provide guidelines and agreeables to what is a successful summit, an ok summit, and a “bomb” or bad summit.  They should be able to offer you some kind of peace of mind that they have a little skin in the game. 7.  Will you allow me to pay you partially upfront & the rest from the results of the summit? This right here is a huge tell and also relates to the question above.  If they are confident in their abilities to help your summit be successful then they can at least put some amount (even a tiny amount ) 10% -50% of their payment could be taken out of the summit results or profit If they are completely 100% against this and don't even at least consider it, then watch out.  That means they already believe the summit isn't going to do well.   If they don't think it's going to do well then you really don't want them consulting.    How To Get Started? Easiest way is to go to our resource area over at VirtualSummits.com and see the list of our approved consultants that we have vetted & recommend.  (if you are a consultant and want us to check you out then get in touch with us.) Additionally you can reach out to our team and see if you qualify for our Virtual Summits Immersion Programs.   We typically only work with clients we know we can get great results with and we definitely take responsibility for the success of the summit, but we have a limited number of spots we work with each quarter.  You can send us a request for more information to info@virtualsummits.com     Build It Custom Yourself (wordpress)   This will be a much shorter version to get through.  This is only for the bravest of entrepreneurs Ones that have either great knowledge & skill in building websites and landing pages.  Have a lot of experience in creating items from scratch using wordpress.    So most likely the entrepreneurs like myself that were out there creating before things like clickfunnels, kajabi & Thinkific were around.      What The Process Looks Like? You map out what you want your summit to look like.  How many speakers, how many pages.  What color schemes, fonts and special items You then begin building it using wordpress and plugins like wishlist member, deadline funnels, thrive cart, disques chat box, and every other technical tool that goes into building out a 100 page event like a summit Then you pray nothing breaks and you linked all your links correctly. (which you didn't, I can already tell you that) ;)   How Long Does It Take? If you have never done this type of thing before, you can plan on it taking you roughly 4 months of non stop (30+ hours a week) of creation for about 2 – 3 months. That's not counting the interviews which will most likely take another 1 -2 months of part time (15 – 20 hours a week) 0f time. If you run more than one you can reuse your original (clone it) and it will save you about 1/3 of the time.  You will still have to spend a lot of time because you have to edit everything inside of the pages.   How Much Does It Cost? If you are someone that knows how to do this you will probably have some specific tools that you want to use, so the cost might be different When I built my first summit – it had 7 softwares & 26 plugins all frankenstined together It cost me roughly $6,700 in total I was able to streamline the process (after I created the first one) to about $2,500 - $4,000.  Because I could reuse a lot of the same tools I had already paid for.    What Are The Downsides? It takes forever It typically doesn't look as professional It still costs a decent amount for the first one.  It will 100% for sure have tech issues.   What Are The Upsides? Total Control & Customization – make it exactly as you want it. If you plan to run more than one.   What Should I Know (or Ask)? I would not recommend this option unless You are super skilled & knowledgeable in wordpress creation. You have no other option., which really there is always the Virtual Summits Software option which honestly you couldn't pay me to go back to doing it the wordpress built from scratch way.  (and I've done probably 10 summits this way before).   Use A Generic Tool Or Software (ClickFunnels, Kajabi, Thinkific) This is honestly the most commonly done way for people hosting summits.  Either because their coach, consultant, or someone they know told them to just use one of these funnel/course building tools to try and host a summit on it.    Most of the people that are advising people to do this are doing it because they get a paid affiliate commission if you click their link and sign up for any of these tools.  With that being said it is much much cheaper, & easier to do it this way than paying a consultant or building it from scratch.   What The Process Looks Like? Typically 1 of 2 ways:  If you are being referred by someone who gets affiliate commissions, they will typically have some kind of template or generic format that you can download and use to template out your summit. If you are just doing it on your own then you have to figure out how to build it out yourself.  Either way it looks like this: You sign up for one of these tools.  The most common are (Click Funnels, Thinkific, & Kajabi).  They will have pages that can be built. You build a landing page, a sales page and all the speaker pages. You have links for all the pages. When your summit goes live you have to figure out how to turn on or off the links to the pages that they should not have access to yet. This usually requires going into every speaker page for that day of the summit and activating the link, then at the end of the day you deactivate the link.  You do this every day for 3- 14 days twice a day for up to 80 speakers and again pray you didn't miss something . (Trust me you did,  everyone always does).  When that happens you generate typically several hundred to several thousand emails from attendees complaining. At the end you drive all the traffic to the sales page and try to generate sales. Then after it's over you have to duplicate everything (If you really are trying to be ethical) so that the original attendees can't still access the recordings, and give the new duplicated version to those who upgraded and paid for the recordings. Another way is to shut it down , take all the presentations and put them on a membership platform and give all those who paid access to that membership platform. Or the lazy way is to shut it all down and just give those who paid a link to your dropbox with all the videos.  (Don't do this) Overall, this is honestly for the costs one of the best ways to run a summit, if the virtual summit software didn't exist.   How Long Does It Take? Typically this will take roughly as long as it does to set it up on wordpress because you still have to go through and build everything.  It's just much more user friendly and won't look like a 3rd grader built it. (or maybe it will I guess I've never seen your page building skills. So in general you are looking at probably 1-2 months of solid work to build out the summit at a minimum putting in 20-30 hours a week & then another 2-3 months of interviews & marketing creation.    How Much Does It Cost? Costs are much more reasonable here.  You are probably looking at around $1,000 - $3,500 upfront costs & around $600 - $1,000 of recurring costs depending on what tools and additional fancy software you add into it.  Also if you are getting this from a coaches program you should factor in the $1,000 - $2,000 you paid for their online course.   What Are The Downsides? Its still a small investment.  You still have to build it all which is going to take a lot of your time. Things will break and not work (always happens)  links not connected correctly, etc. It won't look or function great because it's built on something that isn't really designed for summits. Meaning the functionality won't feel perfect.  It will work, but trying to do a summit on a course software, or a landing page software just doesn't function the way a summit is truly suppose to be run.   What Are The Upsides? It's much quicker than building it custom It's much cheaper It will look better than building it yourself It lets you create a summit which will greatly benefit you and your business.   What Should I Know (or Ask)? Honestly , there is nothing super negative to this approach. I've done the same. My progression went from building them custom on wordpress, to using Thinkific or clickfunnels, to now running them on Virtual Summits Software.  The only real thing to know is if you are going to build a summit on one of these tools then for the same or less cost you can have it built and run quicker, cheaper, and with better functionality on Virtual Summits Software.   How To Get Started Go to the show notes at Podcast.VirtualSummits.com/004 and we will have links to all these tools like Thinkific, click funnels, etc.      Use The Virtual Summits Software  Virtual Summit Software Makes hosting a summit easier than ever before.  It is the only software designed 100% specifically for running summits which means every aspect about it is ideal for summit hosting & creation It has literally changed the game when it comes to summits.  The power that use to be reserved for those already successful entrepreneurs with big budgets, teams, and resources has now been given to everyone of us.   You don't need a team, you don't need any tech skill, you don't need a big budget or resources. You can literally have a summit up and ready to launch in a matter of hours, not months. ***A little history on the virtual summits software.  As I had mentioned I have been running summits for about 4 years now.  I've been involved in around 25 summit creations.  I use to build them by hand painfully.  After a few years of wishing there was an easier way to run summits, I finally found the number one development company in the US and we set out to build the perfect solution to hosting a summit.    We started out by doing a product discovery where we interviewed 50 some summit creators asking them their pain points and solutions.  We found that there was a massive pain in this area and NOT a single solution available to accurately solve it.   We then set out on the next year building what would become the number one tool for hosting a summit.   It literally makes the process so easy that everyone can quickly and simply run a successful summit.     What The Process Looks Like: Head over to Virtual Summits.com and you can sign up for a free trial. Click “Host Your First Summit” You then type in your summit details Go to the landing page builder and choose a template customized from the top 100 most successful summits ever run. Fill out the information you want on the landing page. Go to the speaker section and start recruiting your speakers. Speakers will get the request & they fill out their information and it is auto populated through out the whole summit saving you at least 25 – 40 hours of work. Decide what levels you want in your summit, like free, vip, and elite.  Attach your email software to the membership with one click of a button and you now have all the attendees being signed up to your email list automatically. Drag and drop those speakers into the summit scheduler and poof you are done! Your summit is ready to collect leads to run automatically without you having to do anything and of course collecting you the cash generated from the summit purchase.   How Long Does It Take? I've created summits in under an hour My partner in my other company runs a one-day summit at least once a quarter. She is probably the least techy person you will ever meet & she can have a summit up and ready in a matter of 2 hours.  Obviously your first time in the software it might take you a few hours, but no matter how you look at it, the other alternative is 100+ hours or 2 – 5 hours.  Pretty awesome.   How Much Does it Cost? This is the insane part.  It doesn't cost $10,000.  It doesn't cost $5,000.  It doesn't even cost $1,000.  The highest offering that is available for fully unlocked, unlimited summits with the Ever-Summit Feature is the same price as any of the other software solutions we were previously talking about.  Or even less if you take the standard option.  It's really a no brainer.   What Are The Downsides? Really there are very few downsides if any.  If I had to really try to make something for this I would say in terms of software it is still relatively young.  Which is actually kind of a positive because every week there are new and cool features being released, but at the moment of recording this episode there is not as much customization options as there could be.  They are coming, but that would probably be the top downside.   What Are The Upsides? Essentially everything.  It's cheaper, easier, faster & less tech problems to host a summit.  It is designed specifically for hosting & running summits. Everything about it is seem less and the way a summit should run.    What Should I Know (or Ask)? There is a feature called the Ever-Summit feature which is exclusive to Virtual Summits Software.  With one click of a button the software will automatically rerun your summit as if it was live on going forever.  What is so cool about this is that human nature has us subconsciously think that anything that is old is no longer good.  Even though you and I know that those videos are still good, people who see that it's over will choose not to opt in for it. The Ever- Summit feature allows anyone who comes to the landing page to see that the summit is set to run next week for example.  They opt in and then the software automatically unlocks and locks each day & session appropriately and correctly and then when it's over it locks it down again.  If that attendee tries to go back to the landing page it shows them that the summit is ended and they need to upgrade.  But for all new traffic that goes to that landing page sees that the summit starts next week!  It allows your summit to become the beginning of your customer journey and allows you to scale your business quicker.   How To Get Started Head over to VirtualSummits.com and you can sign up for a free trial to test it out and get started building your next summit.   ***In closing here, there are no necessarily right or wrong answers to these options.  My goal was to shed an in depth light into the options that are there, what is great about them, and the not so great.  It's up to you to decide which option is the best option for you and your situation.  No matter what you are (Summit Host, Speaker, Affiliate) you have a message that needs to get out to the world.  Don't wait, choose whatever option makes the most sense to you and is the easiest to get started and just start moving forward!     My Request I'm going to give away all the best insights and gems, I just need YOUR HELP? LinkedIn is like the wild west for video creators, so what does it take to be a LinkedIn Top Voice and what the Huffington Post calls the "Oprah of LinkedIn?" This week on The Inbound Success Podcast, I interviewed Goldie Chan, otherwise known as the "green haired Oprah of LinkedIn." Goldie has more than 45,000 followers on LinkedIn and garnered 3 million+ views on her daily LinkedIn video in under a year. She's been named a LinkedIn Top Voice (the highest honor bestowed by the platform) and is the owner of LinkedIn's longest-running daily show. Goldie is indisputably one of the top thought leaders when it comes to LinkedIn video, and in this episode, she gets into the nitty gritty of how she approaches her LinkedIn Video strategy, including how she shoots her videos, writes the copy for the accompanying posts, and more. This week's episode of The Inbound Success Podcast is brought to you by our sponsor, IMPACT Live,  the most immersive and high energy learning experience for marketers and business leaders. IMPACT Live takes place August 6-7, 2019 in Hartford Connecticut and is headlined by Marcus Sheridan along with special guests including world-renowned Facebook marketing expert Mari Smith and Drift CEO and Co-Founder David Cancel. Inbound Success Podcast listeners can save 10% off the price of tickets with the code "SUCCESS".  Click here to learn more or purchase tickets for IMPACT Live Some highlights from my conversation with Goldie include: Goldie has the longest running daily video channel on LinkedIn, and has produced more than 600 daily consecutive LinkedIn videos. Goldie produces and edits all of her LinkedIn videos herself and she says the key is to start by creating a video strategy and determining what the focus of your video content will be. It took Goldie some time to build up her following and her advice for others is to approach it like a long term play and be committed to consistently producing content. All of Goldie's video content is available through her LinkedIn profile which she refers to as her "channel." She does this to accustomize people to the notion that her profile is her content home base on LinkedIn. Goldie uses the branded hashtag #DailyGoldie in all of her LinkedIn video posts and recommends that anyone who is serious about LinkedIn video use their own branded hashtag as a way of making it easier for followers to find their video posts. She does not think it is a good idea to use what she calls a "hashtag wall" - essentially a long list of hashtags - because it does not help with YouTube SEO and is confusing for followers. In terms of video quality, Goldie believes that people gravitate towards authenticity on the platform, so you don't need incredibly high quality video (and sometimes overly-produced videos can backfire). But she did say that videos should be in-focus, with good frame quality, good audio, and good lighting, and you should not be too close to the camera. If possible, your LinkedIn videos should also be captioned (and if you're only posting videos once a week, captioning is a must). Goldie has a very specific structure for the copy she creates to accompany her LinkedIn video posts, but she says you can create whatever structure you like so long as you don't use hashtag walls, you don't tag too many people, and you're not too salesy. She uses emojis in her posts but says that if you do this, they need to be relevant and contextual. She advises LinkedIn users to never use an emoji in their name on LinkedIn because it can break LinkedIn's code. Transcript Kathleen Booth (Host): Welcome back to the Inbound Success Podcast. Welcome back to the Inbound Success Podcast, my name is Kathleen Booth and I am your host. And this week I am especially excited to say that my guest is Goldie Chan, who is known as the green-haired Oprah of LinkedIn. Welcome, Goldie. Goldie Chan (Guest): Thank you for having me. Goldie and Kathleen all smiles while recording this episode Kathleen: I am really excited, maybe a little too much, it might be a little weird. About Goldie Chan Kathleen: So I'll just say a few words about you, and then I'm going to ask you to introduce yourself to our audience. So just, Goldie, I started following her because I was, personally, interested in getting better at LinkedIn video, and her name kept popping up, and her face kept popping up. And I just quickly realized that she was the one really doing it first, and so I started to LinkedIn stalk her, and then Twitter stalk her. But she's got her own social media agency, Warm Robots, she is an influencer in the LinkedIn space, she's on the Producers Guild of America's new media council. You put your hand in a lot of different things, and I probably won't do as great a job of covering it all as you would. So tell my audience a little bit more about you, and how you came to be this LinkedIn influencer. Goldie: Sure. So I've worked, historically, in digital marketing, both on B2B and B2C side for over a decade; which always surprises people. And I worked from that ground up, I worked from the very lowest level entry level position to where I am today, and very different divergence from the traditional path. But I currently am a contributor on Forbes, I write about storytelling and personal branding in the digital age, and I absolutely love my column that I get to write about that. And I have the longest running daily channel currently on LinkedIn, I am over 600 daily, consecutive videos right now, so I started in the beta and I kept going. And one of the most interesting things, I think, is when you are doing daily consecutive content, which I'd personally never done before, you learn so much about yourself, your work ethic, your creative process, and how you can also teach that creative process and, hopefully, that work ethic to other people and explain what works and what doesn't work. And I also teach a few LinkedIn learning courses, one which is on LinkedIn video, and if you have a library card in California, Texas, or New York, I'm not sure about other states, you can get access to lynda.com for free, that's L-Y-N-D-A, and you can actually watch all three of my courses for free. Kathleen: That's great, I love that. And I want to just pause for a second and underscore something you just said, because I feel like it would be easy to gloss over it. Goldie: Yeah. Kathleen: Over 600 daily, consecutive videos on LinkedIn. So if you're listening, she has posted a new video every single day for over 600 days. I don't think you could find many people out there who have done anything consistently in their life for 600 days straight; let alone produce video and content. I heard you talk about this, I think, it was Social Media Week Toronto, I watched your talk on YouTube. And you talked about you were going into the desert with friends, and you realized you hadn't done your video and you, literally, had to leave the desert and go film it because you didn't want to break your streak. Can you talk a little bit about just that consistency, because that's pretty amazing? What It's Like To Produce 600 Consistent Daily Videos Goldie: Sure. So I had been used to doing content for clients or content in-house. And this is very different, because there's a definitive strategy behind it, you don't do content first, you do the strategy first, then you bucket the content, and you do one entire process; and when I started doing video on LinkedIn, I didn't do any of that. I was actually on a hiatus between my last role as Head of Marketing at a full time analytics startup, and getting my next role as Head of Marketing at some other sort of startup, and I was taking a month sabbatical. And during that month sabbatical, I got into the LinkedIn video beta and I decided, for really one of the first times in my life, that I would be doing content that wasn't geared towards monetization; it didn't necessarily have a goal, it was content that I would enjoy. So the first 50 videos, or so, I did on branding and metrics of pop culture phenomenons, because this is how big of a marketing nerd I am, this is what I consider fun to do. So I talked about things like Harry Potter, trains in the US, ride sharing, all sorts of really interesting, different things that have really permeated, specifically, American culture. And I think it was so interesting, because the first 10 or so I did I thought, "This is so painful." Really fun, but it's also painful because if you've never done daily video content before, and you do 10 in a row, it's a lot. Ten videos in a row, that's almost two weeks' worth of video, so your schedule changes from everyday you might create content to everyday you have to create content. And this is what got me through 600 daily videos, this is what got me, truly, through the biggest and hardest milestone, which was 365 days or a full year of video. And every single one of those videos were unique, original content; so nothing was ever repurposed, it was 100 percent unique, original content. And I think what got me through that is that there was never a plan B. Kathleen: Yeah. Goldie: So in all things in life, usually you have a plan B like, "If this doesn't work, then I just won't post today, I'll post two videos tomorrow, it'll be fine." There was never, ever a plan B. I was on a flight back from London to the US and my video wasn't uploading, so I ended up uploading this video of me running across the gang plank onto the plane; that was just like a very short clip. I essentially live on airplanes too, so I travel a lot, so my fight with wifi is always ... My battle and love affair with WiFi; we have a very contentious relationship. Kathleen: I was just going to say, you can never go off grid. Goldie: Yeah, I never can go off grid. But I had this really great, edited long video, super thoughtful that I did for that day, and I couldn't upload it. So I upload this video of me running saying, "I am trying to upload this video, I'm going to see which of these videos uploads, hopefully you guys will see one of them." And ironically, of course, what video uploaded was the video of me running. This video uploads, which then it actually blew up, which is the best part because no one had ever uploaded, of course, a video a very meta video of them running to try to upload- Kathleen: To try to upload a video. Goldie: A video of them. So it's a video of me holding my laptop, which is attempting to upload the main video, and I'm on my camera phone videoing me running down this to catch my flight. So- Kathleen: I love it. Goldie: Shoot a meta video and what it takes in order to get, I think, if anybody's thinking about doing a 365 day challenge which is, to me, that's the true challenge. Can you do one day of video for an entire year? I think it really does change you to make that kind of commitment to creating content, original content, not repurposed content every single day; because repurposed content is easy. When you don't feel like being on camera, you don't feel like, say, necessarily seeing yourself, or hearing your own voice, or seeing your work. It's very easy to repurpose content, it's so much harder to create truly original content every single day. Kathleen: Yeah, I have so many questions that I want to ask you about this. Starting with, really, is it ... They say that content creation, whether it's written or video, or what have you, is like a muscle that you have to exercise. Doing this for 365 days, did you feel like it got easier? And like working out, where you get into the groove and you're like, "Oh, yeah, I can do this, I'm in a routine?" Or did that challenge persist throughout that time? How did that play out for you? Goldie: I will say it's so funny we're talking about this today, because today I struggled with ... Today was video 610 for me. I struggled with doing a daily video today, and I almost repurpose an older video, which I do sometimes; now that I've passed 365 mark. So it is a problem that continues to pop up is creating original ideas, coming up with a concept, actually executing on that concept and/or editing through my insanely giant backlog of video content that I still have. I still have several unedited videos that I will release at some point this year. You never quite get over that hump of there will be days that are really, really tough; but overall, overall, it does get easier. So it is like working out where you may just have some bad days where you don't want to go the gym but, overall, you're so used to going to the gym. I'm so used to every single day, I will upload a video onto LinkedIn, and I could not do any other content. I do social media for a living, but I could not access any of my other platforms, I could just avoid them all. But I know that I will always go on LinkedIn, and I will always upload some sort of video content period. And that is a promise I've made to myself as a content creator, and so it's a little bit different than if you were doing it for a client. But also, once again, a lot of people assume that I outsource most of this to my team; I actually don't. And I don't do it, partially, because I am crazy but also, partially, because my team has other things that they're handling, too. They're handling a lot of the client work, they're doing other things, so I don't want to, necessarily, distract my team from that. Although this year for myself, personally, because once again, I've gone over that 365 day hump, I will be giving them a little bit more, especially of the editing to do as I'm moving forward with my content creation. But I think it's really important for even if you're doing, say, a 50 video challenge to do it all yourself, because it teaches you what you need when you do hire somebody to handle this for you. Kathleen: Yeah, amen. I am currently trying to do it myself, and it's been an interesting journey; so far I managed to get a couple of videos out. But I'm not highly technical, and I think a lot of people listening probably aren't either. You have your team, that's your web developers, your video producers. I have a whole video production team that works for me, but I'm not having them do this. Because right now, it's not a business strategy, that's something I'm doing for myself.  Creating a LinkedIn Video Strategy Kathleen: So if someone's listening, I guess, you've mentioned starting with strategy; so let's actually start in the right order. When you're talking to somebody who's thinking about maybe investing in LinkedIn video for themselves, or to promote their business, how do you talk them through conceptualizing a strategy for it? Goldie: Sure. So the thing I start with is, what I start with with all my clients when I think about content in general, which is, who is your target demographic, who are you're trying to speak to? Because then it's so much easier to figure out the kind of content that you should be doing. So if your audience is very serious, or your audience is very light-hearted, this changes the kind of content that is optimized for the audience you want to speak to. So I like to think about it as an audience or demographic, first piece; so that's number one is thinking about your demographic. Number two is, what is either your personal brand, if you're coming at it from your personal brand, or what is the brand brand? What is the keywords, what is the thought process behind the brand that you're trying to promote? So those are the two really big key pieces, and people tend to hop, skip over this. And they're like, "You know what would be fun? Is a show about blog." And I'm like, "That sound fun." And I was looking at to literally do a show about blog, and then it took off, but properly strategizing for this, you want to think about who your audience is, first. And if you do run your own business, and you are looking for, say, more customers or more clients, who are those customers and clients, and what kind of content would be of the highest value to them? How Long Does It Take to Build a Following With LinkedIn Video? Kathleen: Okay, now in your case, how long did it take before you started to see traction with your videos and gain followers? Goldie: I'm laughing a little bit, which you guys can't see because this is audio only. I will say the first 30 days I did it, or the first ... I don't remember what month, I started in August; that's right. So the first month I did videos, all of my friends, including some who are content creators on other platforms, they all thought I was absolutely bananas, they thought I was nuts. They were like, "Why are you making videos on this platform? You're getting maybe 100 views if you're lucky." So giving everybody my numbers when I started, so I'd get, maybe, 100 views if I was very lucky, maybe 10 likes if I was super duper lucky, and I just enjoyed the process of creativity. So it took me a while before I saw traction, and I think it's really interesting that people now want that immediate traction, especially on LinkedIn video. And yes, you can get there faster than you can on other platforms, but I had a meeting once with this young lady, she's super nice. She had done three videos; so just three videos 1, 2, 3. And she said, "Okay, how do I land a brand like WeWork, like you have a partnership with? I've done three videos, they've all been incredibly well." It was so interesting to me to hear that she had only done, and I use that word strongly, only done three pieces of content and then expected a giant brand deal out of that. You have to put in the time, the energy, and the effort, so you have to put in more pieces of content. So the in this case, it was both quality and quantity that was being ignored. And that is one thing to think about, which is when you're strategizing and thinking about doing LinkedIn video, can you commit to doing at least 10 videos? Can you commit to doing at least 20 videos? Can you commit to doing enough videos for you to see if you can get traction over two months, three months, as opposed to thinking, "If I release one video a day for a week, I will get 12 new clients." If it works for you that way, amazing; please teach me. But if it doesn't work for you that way, a lot of it is duration and being in it for a longer haul. Because with all video content creation, you need more time to build an audience, even if your content is amazing. What Is a 'LinkedIn Channel'? Kathleen: Yeah. Now you talked about having the longest running channel on LinkedIn. And this is something so interesting to me, because I don't think, probably, 90 some odd percent of people even know what the concept of a LinkedIn channel is. So this is a two part question. The first part is, can you explain what that is and how it functions? And then, also, I would love to understand from you, if you are somebody who is going to commit themselves to a consistent LinkedIn video strategy, how important is it to approach it from, like, a channel mentality? Goldie: So as opposed to other platforms like, say, YouTube, where you have a distinct channel, so your YouTube URL is your channel, it's the place that houses all your videos. Right now LinkedIn, unless you use a third party, doesn't have the ability to host your videos on LinkedIn in a separate video tab or video functionality. So when I say 'Channel', I essentially mean all of my content, so all of my content goes through the funnel of being on my profile. So in this case, my LinkedIn profile is my channel, and when I work with brands on their strategy on LinkedIn, and then I usually call their brand page 'Their channel'. It's just slightly different terminology, but it helps people also understand that this is a place to consistently see content, because we expect a channel to consistently have content. And, once again, I have to emphasize that word 'Consistent'. Kathleen: Yeah. Goldie: Now I'm completely forgetting what your second question was. Should You Have a Branded LinkedIn Hashtag? Kathleen: Well, so I'll help you out with that, because I have a second part to the question you just answered. Which is, in your case, you have your profile, which is your channel, but you also are very good about consistently using a hashtag, #DailyGoldie- Goldie: Yes. Kathleen: With your posts. And you can click on that hashtag and, actually, there's the ability to follow the DailyGoldie hashtag. So I guess the second part of the question's really, if somebody is going to really double down and commit themselves, obviously, your point about consistency is crucial; and I think that you've made that really, really clear. You're not going to get traction unless you're consistent and the quality is there. How important is it also to try to brand yourself with whether ... Like I've noticed, you've done a hashtag, I also follow Chantel Soumis, who has #ChantelShares and Alyssa Mangaoang who has #AlyssaHQ. How important is it to have a branded hashtag to make it even easier for people to really follow that feed? Goldie: So when I began doing LinkedIn videos, hashtag search in August of 2017, was not what hashtag search is now. So I actually didn't even start doing #DailyGoldie until my audience asked me to do a hashtag, so they could better find my content. Which I love this because this is such an example of chicken and the egg, horse and the cart. I wasn't actually the original one who asked to do a hashtag, my audience was the one that asked me to do a hashtag so they could better find and aggregate my content. So moving forward, one of the things I do tell people is, "Have your own branded hashtag." However, the thing that I super strongly recommend against is having multiple hashtags. So some people, if you notice, they have a hashtag block, they have what works really well on Instagram, but it doesn't work as well on LinkedIn. And why is that? It's because LinkedIn's hashtag search is not as mature as, say, Instagram's hash tag search. So if you have three or four hashtags that you're trying to own, it's much harder also for people to follow all three of those, remember all three of those, it's just much easier for people to remember one hashtag. So having one hashtag that you own that has, maybe, your name or your brand name in it will make it so much easier. And even when I started doing live streaming, because now there's #LinkedinLive, I started doing #GoldieLive, which I might keep up with and I might not just because I think it's nice just to have my live streams be a little bit more unbranded. And I know that is very counterintuitive, because everybody wants everything to be hyper branded; I, myself speak on branding quite a bit. But I think when something is so new, and in such beta form, you can look a little bit over done when you're over branded. So when everything is hyper graphics, everything has an intro screen, etc, you lose some of that genuine qua- ... especially if you're a vlogger. This is not necessarily true if you're a brand. But if you are trying to represent your personal brand, you lose that genuineness, you lose that authenticity, because people are having to watch 15 seconds of an intro to every single one of your live streams, and they all look the same too. Which is, to me, visually un-stimulating- Kathleen: Yeah. Goldie: Not interesting and not, necessarily, super creative. LinkedIn Video Production Quality Kathleen: So that brings me to an interesting question, which is around production quality. I think you referenced wanting to convey a genuine feeling. And I feel the same way, like things that are too overly produced, they just don't seem authentic on. And so what are the guard rails around this? Like, is there a low end that you shouldn't go below? And is there a high end that you shouldn't exceed? Goldie: Well, it really depends. So one of the things that I tell people now is that LinkedIn is like YouTube year one. So even though LinkedIn, gosh, I'm coming up on two years now of doing LinkedIn video, even though it's maybe closer to its second year of birth, it still is so, so new as a platform, and that's why people are excited about things like blogs. People are excited about these videos that feel a little bit more unedited, because they feel more different on a platform that is ... There's so many ads that I see all the time on LinkedIn, or just things that are constantly being super salesy on LinkedIn; so it's so refreshing to see things that are a little bit more genuine on LinkedIn now. But let's go over the guardrails, so still, when you're creating content on LinkedIn, you want it to be as clear as it can be, as non-blurry as it can be, you want the framing to be nice. So I recently switched over to doing a couple more vertical videos just because I'm also experimenting with IGTV right now. And one of my personal pet peeves with vertical video that I've seen, is when people get too close. So you guys can't see this, but I'm framing my face, and I call it the serial killer face. So when you are too close in the frame, your head fills up 90 percent of a vertical frame, you are too close. So you want to make sure that your head is maybe two thirds of the frame in a vertical video if vertical video is what you want to do. And this is, of course, our beautiful rule of thirds, which is a classic rule, classic video rule, it's not one I made up. And it really is helpful for actually, subconsciously, being a more interactive and engaging video. Because you're not in other people's faces, which is attention getting for one video. And I've had other people who will dispute me on this, other marketers, who say, "It's good." They like this format because it always gets in people's faces. That's good for one video as a shock value, however, if I noticed that all your videos are disturbingly close, I probably won't want to watch more than one video, because it's off putting to me, because it feels like you're staring into my soul; and I don't know that I want that. But having the proper framing for a vertical video, if that's what you decide to do, is important. Now LinkedIn alternates between the style and the type of video that you can create that's optimal. If I have enough time, because I am extra nuts, I like to shoot actually vertical and horizontal, just because I personally like the way horizontal looks on LinkedIn video more than I like the way that vertical looks. But you'll notice that people who are, especially, doing blogs on LinkedIn, they're shooting a lot of them in a vertical format. But I even have right here, I have an LED light that I use when I'm shooting content, but for most of it, having good audio, having good lighting, these are just basic tenants of creating content, and making sure that you have a tripod that you can carry with you when you are shooting on mobile. These are just basic that will be helpful for creating content. Captioning Your LinkedIn Videos Kathleen: Now what about captions? Goldie: So I love, love, love captions and I am incredibly guilty of not doing captions recently in my content. And the reason for that is, quite honestly, I do daily content and I don't batch my content, a lot. So for people who do batch content and say you're releasing one video a week, there is no excuse, there is zero excuse not to have captions on every single piece of content. Now for me, I will literally shoot something on the way to a meeting, and then upload it 30 minutes later. So for me it's a lot harder to do captions, just because my content production cycle is so quick. But if you have more than 24 hours, you can hire people who either do captioning, or use something like Clips or Google Matic, which does auto captioning as well on the iOS devices. So there's so many solutions if you're not doing daily content, where you can get captions and yes, I may not do captions frequently, but captions are so helpful. And if there was a way for me to better do daily captions and still get the adorable filters that I like to put on my videos, I would do that. But with daily content, it is incredibly difficult. But yes, there are so many captioning services out there, it's a shame not to do captions. Kathleen: Yeah, there's a massive market opportunity out there for somebody to create a tool that makes it easier to caption. I will say when I started doing my videos, I've tried, oh my God, I probably tried 10 different approaches to recording, and then I use Rev.com to transcribe my podcasts and I thought, "Oh, I'll just use Rev to create the SRT file for the captions." But then putting it all together was a nightmare. What I settled on, which is amazing, is you mentioned it, Apple clips. It's unbelievable, it's so easy. I mean, if I can do a video with captions in Apple clips, literally, a four year old could do it. Goldie: Yeah, Apple Clips and, I personally use Clipomatic when I do do captioning in videos. The only issue, of course, with that is that it only records up to a minute of video caption and then you have to, of course, go back and edit those captions because it misspells- Kathleen: Yeah. Goldie: It always misspelled my name. Kathleen: And it's all one long run on sentence, it doesn't process sentences. Goldie: And it's one long run on sentence. So it's nice to go back and edit those captions to make sure that they say things properly. But, yes, there are captioning services out there so if you are making videos that are one minute or less, then there is truly no excuse, yeah. Creating Copy For LinkedIn Video Posts Kathleen: Now for every video you post, there is accompanying copy that you put in the post itself. And I'm curious if you can talk to, what have you found works really well when you're drafting the copy to go along with a video? Goldie: I have an entire talk I do on copy on LinkedIn video, which should probably tell you how big of a nerd I am. Kathleen: That's what I say, I knew I could talk to you forever, but we don't have forever. Goldie: With copy, I have so many pet peeves with the kind of copy I see accompanying video or even imagery on LinkedIn. One is the one that I already mentioned, which is the hashtag block. It is not SEO optimized, don't do it, it will only look junkie. So if it's not going to get you the SEO push, there's no reason to do a giant block of hashtags; it's my personal belief. And the same thing, because I just talked about hashtag block, was tagging 20 irrelevant people in the post. Now I always love being tagged in everyone's post, because I do ... Even though I may not comment, I may not like, I do try to watch as many people's videos as I can; so I'm an exception to the rule. But for the most part, most people don't want to be tagged in content that's irrelevant and I, myself, don't like being tagged in, say, images that are irrelevant and not original video content, so you have to be really careful about tagging. And that is something people also put in the copy, is they do half a line, usually misspelled, and then they have 20 people in it. And that, once again, it looks junky, it just looks like it's not very well thought out. And one of the things I do like to do in my copy is I like to use my personal hashtag, so I use #DailyGoldie. I have a very distinctive structure for my copy, which you guys might now see kind of propagated across all of LinkedIn; a lot of people now use my structure. I tend to do a title, and then I do a body, and then I maybe put a link or something in there, and then I'll do which did daily number video I'm because I do daily videos and it's nice to know for me, personally, what video number I'm on for that day. The structure, of course, changes for everyone, but what it is not is, once again, not a giant block of hashtags, it's not me tagging people who are not directly related to that video. And it is also not, necessarily, a sales funnel. I don't believe in doing every video as a hard sales funnel, in fact, I very rarely do sales in my videos, even my sponsored videos. They happen pretty rarely and infrequently and I think, to me, that's because I like my content to always be of high value. So even if I'm doing a video that is driving someone towards a sale, that's a high value video that they're getting, so even if they don't want to buy the thing, they're still learning something and I think that is, to me, the most important thing you can do with a video channel on LinkedIn. Kathleen: Yeah. Now I've noticed you use emojis in your posts, and- Goldie: Yeah. Kathleen: I actually really like it. There's a lot of debate around emojis in, general, right now I feel like. For me the way, at least I've seen you use it, it helps visually break up the post. Goldie: Yeah. Kathleen: It's almost like you can't, necessarily, do bolding and italics in LinkedIn, but you can bracket things with emojis and set things apart. Can you talk a little bit about your approach to that? Using Emojis in LinkedIn Posts Goldie: Sure. So I think ... Well, let me tell you where not to put emojis; so let's actually start with there, and then we'll go back to where you can use emojis and it does make sense. So where you should not be using emojis - and I've actually talked to some of the top creators on the platform about, "Don't do this anymore" - s o I'm doing my school teacher finger waving that you can't see. Don't put emojis in your name on LinkedIn. And the reason for that is, first of all ... And I use a green heart emoji next to my name on other platforms, but on LinkedIn, it looks a little unprofessional; so you want to stay away from that. But that's not why you shouldn't use an emoji next to your name on LinkedIn, it will actually sometimes break the code. Kathleen: Yeah. Goldie: So if someone is trying to tag you on LinkedIn, it can potentially break that code, which is all bad- Kathleen: Yeah, that's not good. Goldie: Because then people aren't able to tag you, and you don't get the benefit of being tagged in someone else's post. So that's the main reason I say don't use emojis specifically in your name; regardless of the emoji that you want to use. Now let's go back to where you can use emojis and it does make sense, which is in your video copy and I use them to, like you said, break up the copy. I like to use them so it gives you a little bit of fresh air, but the emojis are usually relevant to the copy. I don't like to use a ton of irrelevant emojis, like people who tend to do five or six emojis in a row and it's just a string of emojis that don't necessarily relate at all to that, but it's just a subset of emojis that they always use. Once again, I think everything should be relevant and a value, so if I'm using an emoji, it will likely be relevant to the content that I'm creating; and that makes it less obnoxious. Kathleen: Yeah. Goldie: There's a lot of debate, which you were talking about, that emojis are so obnoxious, they're just so annoying to see, and the way you kind of take that down a notch is making the emojis actually relate to what you're doing and what you're talking about. So if I'm talking about fishing, and I use a fish emoji, people can't really argue with that because I'm not doing like 12 emojis in a row of palm trees and then a fish. I'm not trying to be a graphic designer with my emojis. Kathleen: Right, you're not bedazzling your LinkedIn posts. Goldie: I am not bedazzling, although we grew up in the 90s, you probably like the bedazzling. Kathleen: Exactly. I don't know, I think it was pretty tacky then and that's one of those trends that does not need to come back, the second time around. Goldie: I feel like in might just because we're seeing- Kathleen: Probably. Goldie: A resurgence in bedazzling, in general. Kathleen: If gauchos and culottes can come back, then so can bedazzling. Goldie: Yes. Kathleen: Yeah, I would agree. I mean I think it's actually, emojis are becoming much more accepted in a business context than they used to be, but it definitely requires a steady hand and some balance. Goldie: Yes, I think it just requires relevance. Kathleen: Yeah. Goldie: So the more relevant an emoji is, the more people can't argue with that emoji use. I mean the same thing is true of, if we want to go down this rabbit hole, of GIFs as well. Kathleen: Yeah, exactly. So again I do feel like I could talk to you all day, but you have lots of content to create. And so a couple of questions for you to kind of bring us back home. The first is for somebody who's thinking of getting started with LinkedIn video today, any top piece of advice you would have for them that we haven't already covered as a newbie that they should have in mind? Goldie: So my number one favorite piece of advice for anyone who's thinking about starting on LinkedIn video is focus. When you are thinking about creating a bucket of content, a bucket of videos on LinkedIn, they should have a singular focus. And why is this? This makes it easier for people to understand what you're about, what your content is about, and it makes it easier for them to follow you. Because they can decide right off the bat, if they want to watch all your videos on, say, Shopify Plus. Kathleen: Yeah, that makes sense and everyone who listens to this, in some way shape or form, is a marketer, so it's all about the editorial strategy and- Goldie: Yes, and it's about editing yourself. Kathleen: Yes, exactly. Sometimes it's the hardest kind of editing. Goldie: Yes. Kathleen's Two Questions Kathleen: All right, well as my listeners know, I like to ask every guest the same two questions before we wrap up. The first one is company or individual, who do you think is doing inbound marketing really well right now? Goldie: Oh my gosh, this is such a lovely question. I recently met with somebody who I think is fantastic and has a great email strategy, and her name is, I'm going to pull it up right now because I really should have pulled it up sooner. Kathleen: That's all right, I'm catching you off guard. Goldie: For everyone who is, because I always get her last name wrong, Ann Handley. Kathleen: Oh, I love Ann. Goldie: Yeah, Ann is wonderful. We are totally going to buy matching suits and wear them to the next conference, so- Kathleen: Doesn't she have the best suits? Goldie: She has the best suits- Kathleen: Yeah. Goldie: But she also has incredibly strong email strategy. So go subscribe to her email strategy, go read her book; she also has a new book out. But I like how friendly, yet professional her outbound content is. And it's this beauti- ... It's just like her suits, which are wild, but professional. And I think that she is such a great example of just a branding. She has incredibly consistent branding both on her person, literally her person, and also on her outgoing emails. Kathleen: Absolutely. Goldie: Yeah. Kathleen: Her suit game is strong, and her newsletter which is, for anyone listening, it's called Total Annarchy, with two N's for her first name, is amazing. It comes out once every other Sunday, I think, is the cadence. Great answer, we love Ann at IMPACT. Second question is, obviously digital marketing is changing so quickly, how do you personally stay up to date and keep yourself educated? Goldie: So, I have a few resources that I absolutely love and I absolutely would follow. One of them is so funny because they interviewed me, and then I got so obsessed with them, because I just love all the content that they're constantly putting out, and that is WeRSM. And they are based in London, but they have footprints all over the US. And they tend to cover a lot of things as they're happening. So what they're great on is they will release articles, literally, the same day LinkedIn officially announced live, they will do an article that same day. So I love how incredibly up to date and feature focused they are, but for me as a marketer, it's all the kind of content and news that I'm more interested in, the new features that are released that are relevant to my user base and my demographic. So they're a really slightly unknown, but such a great media outlet for marketers that I think should have a bigger and better presence. Ad they also had a podcast, that was really, really wonderful as well, but I think it's currently on hiatus. How to Connect With Goldie Chan Kathleen: I cannot wait to check them out, they sound like a great resource. Now we've already talked about how you can be found on LinkedIn if anybody just types in #DailyGoldie, G-O-L-D-I-E. Any other places people should seek you out online if they want to learn more about you or get in touch? Goldie: Sure, so you can find me on Twitter @GoldieChan, G-O-L-D-I-E-C-H-A-N or find me on Instagram @GoldieCylon, G-O-L-D-I-E-C-Y-L-O-N, because I am a huge Battlestar Galactica fan. And I've been experimenting a little bit on Instagram, like I said before with IGTV and other kinds of alternative short form content; so Instagram also is fascinating. Kathleen: And you have to go check her out on Instagram because she has an amazing picture of herself dressed as Khaleesi from Game of Thrones that is on point. Goldie: Thank you. You Know What To Do Next... Kathleen: All right, well if you're listening and you liked what you heard, of course I would love it if you would leave a five star review for the podcast on iTunes. And if you know someone doing kick ass inbound marketing work, tweet me @WorkMommyWork because I would love to interview them. Kathleen: Thank you so much, Goldie, this was great. Goldie: Thank you so much for having me.

How Long Does It Take to Sell Books on Amazon? Someone once said to me, “Steve, I've got a bunch of books in Amazon FBA, and most of the ranks are around 400,000. It's been about a week, and the books haven't been selling. So how long does it take for a 400,00-ranked book to sell?” Good question. How long does it take for a 400,000-ranked book to sell? Quite a few different factors come into play here. To be honest, sometimes it's random. I've had 2- million-ranked books sell in a day. Then I've had hundred-thousand-ranked books take a couple weeks or more. Sometimes they never sell. Click To Watch This Video On YouTube... Factors to Keep in Mind You'll have some factors to consider. Even if your book has a good ranking—say, ranked at 50,000—you may be fifth or seventh in line in terms of the lowest price; so it might take a while for your book to sell. But if you're the lowest price and there's a market for that book and it's selling and there are a lot of people who want to buy it, you're going to sell fairly quickly. Another thing to consider is the condition. If you're selling a textbook, does it include a CD? Is it in an acceptable condition? Is your competition selling it in very good condition? Price is going to play a role. Are you selling it as a merchant or are you selling it FBA? That's another big thing to take into consideration as well because you could have a 50,000 ranked book, but people might not want to buy from you as a merchant because they might want that two-day shipping through FBA and the hassle-free returns. But really there's no exact science to all this. It really, really depends on a number of factors, but even that is ultimately unknowable. Sometimes the competition will come in and knock the price down. Sometimes people have repricers as well, so they'll undercut you by a penny. If there's not a big enough market, it can just take some time. Be Aware of Your Competition It could take a couple of days. It could take a couple of weeks. What I would advise you to do is check in on your competition and check in on your price to make sure that you're competitive with other sellers. You don't necessarily always have to be the lowest price. But if there's not a huge market and you're not the lowest priced—if you're third or fourth in line—it could take a while to sell. Keep an eye on things. Keep an eye on the price, the competition, and your condition. You want to be competitive with the condition. If all the other sellers are Like New and you're Acceptable, you're going to have a tough time. If you're a merchant, it could take a lot longer versus going FBA. But just hang in there. Keep on shipping books. If you are new, just know that there's a little bit of a learning curve associated with it. Be patient. Success in selling books will come to you! Episode 41: How Becoming An Author Can Enhance Your Brand with David Konkol

On today’s episode of Brandstorm, we welcome David Konkol, president of Konkol Custom Homes & Remodeling, LLC. As the author of the book Building Your Dream Home: What You Need To Know, David provides tips on how becoming a published author can enhance your brand. About David Konkol David is a licensed building contractor and has been crafting luxury custom homes, starting at $1 million, for over three decades in Central Florida. He became an author about 10 years ago, when a friend in the publishing world (and owner of a home David’s company built) asked David if he had ever considered writing a book. While David originally dismissed the idea, he was reminded that many people who write books aren’t writers themselves, such as presidents, CEO’s and athletes. His friend encouraged David to share his wealth of knowledge with the home building and home buying public, and even created a book outline from the list of his original questions he had when David built his home. David was then convinced that the book would save both his time in answering questions from customers and prospects, as well as his clients’ time, giving them added value. What David didn’t know was just how much business would be generated from the process, and how far apart his book would set him from his competition. He points to two things his book does well: building trust and alleviating fears. He takes time within the pages to introduce himself and his background (including how long he has been married and how many children he has) as a way to present himself as an average person trying to do an exceptional job. As no other builder in his market has written a book, Building Your Dream Home showcases David as an expert in his field, spotlights his competence and strengthens his brand. How Long Does It Take to Write a Book? David explains that from start to finish, the process took approximately 14 months (working 10 hours per week) and that the only downside to writing the book was the family time he had to give up temporarily.  His process included carrying a three-ring binder wherever he went, with chapter titles listed on each page. This way, he could write down ideas as bullet points on the spot, whether he was on a job or working in his office. Those bullet points would then be dictated into a tape recorder, and the physical writing of the book would come from that content. He recommends this method because he found that the more he wrote, the more ideas he came up with and the more value and knowledge he could include within the book. Working with a publisher would’ve added about six months to the entire process, David states. He equates about 35% of his time, from beginning to end, was spent writing the first draft, and that the key to self-publishing is to make the final product look as if it was produced by a publisher. Otherwise, a poor product can hurt your reputation and sales.  Book Distribution David says he was never interested in selling books, but instead, securing more homes to build for those he wouldn’t normally get in front of. He feels that the book provided him a reason to reach out to potential, current and former clients, and that it also gave people a reason to start or revisit their relationship with David. After printing the first edition of the book, David’s company couriered a copy to their top prospects. Within a matter of weeks, he had already gotten calls back from a few of these prospects to start the home building process. He had also mailed copies to each home owner he had built for, asking them to forward the book on to anyone they know who could benefit from it. This spawned multiple unsolicited personal endorsements for David and his company. Though David does not make it a prerequisite for someone to read his book before working with him, he does mention to potential clients that the best homes and best processes of his career have come from projects requested by those who took the time to read the book. He also sent copies of Building Your Dream Home to the top 35 competitors in his area. David mentions that he wasn’t worried about potential theft of ideas or methods. Instead, he feels the book sets up for people how the home building process should go, and if customers hear something different from another builder, they know to be skeptical. Targeted book drops have also helped David’s company. Any homes marked for a major renovation or teardown near some of Orlando's nicest lakes were provided a book. This process alone turned into a $4.3 million build eventually. On top of these methods of distribution, David credits his well-trained staff with always asking callers or those taking home tours whether they’ve read David's book. Over the phone, his staff arranges for a book to be dropped off the same day of their initial call, and in person, David is usually available on site to sign copies and meet new potential clients.  How Much Does It Cost to Self-Publish a Book? David says his investment was about $8,000 — including jacket design, editing and proofing — on the first copy. Every copy afterwards was at a cost of about $7, which David says is still less than a nice brochure. With every new edition, David changes out the cover art, updates home photos and modifies the content. This allows him to circle back with the owners he’s built for, as well as others that can help leverage him in his market. With all of his success, David has already published a second book, In House: Designing Your Dream Home Room By Room, and he is on his way to writing his third soon. In the podcast this week, I interview Cody Smith who is the author of the book Stage Fight — How to Punch Public Speaking Fears in the Face. It is a hilarious interview where Cody tells about all of the trials and tribulations that he experienced trying to overcome public speaking fear. Have fun listening to and learning from Cody Smith.Cody Smith is a young entrepreneur who realized very early in his academic career that public speaking fear has the ability to hold people back. His new book, Stage Fight, How to Punch Public Speaking Fears in the Face is a very funny and informative outline of all of the steps that Cody took to eliminate his nervousness.Early in the conversation, I asked Cody about his background, and he surprisingly told me that he didn’t write the book to become a professional speaker. Instead, he wrote it because he noticed that a number of his colleagues, who were technically exceptional in their jobs, were getting passed over for promotion by less technical people who could present well. He wrote the book as a way to pass along the tips that he uncovered in his journey to confidence so that other people his age could benefit as well.Public Speaking Failure is Just an Opportunity to Grow and LearnCody spent a lot of time telling us how when he was a nervous speaker, he saw himself as a victim. It wasn’t his fault he was nervous. The fault was someone else’s. So the first step that he had to take in eliminating the nervousness was to stop hiding behind the “victim shield”. He started to look back on those “failures” to see what he could of done to eliminate the bad results. Once he started to see his past failures as opportunities for improvement, he grew much more quickly. How Long Does It Take to Eliminate Public Speaking Fear? After Cody changed his mental state, he needed practice. So, he set out to speak at least one time per week for 90 days. He said that it worked like a charm. By the end of his 90th day, his confidence was soaring. However, he mentioned that if you follow the step-by-step plan in his book, you can cut that time to just 30 days. He mentioned that unlike what he did, when he coaches people now, he has them practice that presentation each week with a couple of peers. In addition, he also has them go speak on an impromptu basis at least once per week. This increased practice speeds up the process dramatically. To download Cody’s book on Kindle, just click this link: Stage Fight Kindle Version.
