She gets into the deeper problem: what our skin is trying to say about our gut, our toxic load, and the way we eat, live, and sleep. We dive into everything from Accutane and vitamin deficiencies to the real deal with sunscreen. We also talk about the insane rise in chronic rashes in babies, and why so many parents are being pushed toward risky immune-suppressing drugs way too fast.If you've ever wondered why skin issues aren't being solved, this one will wake you up."Just because somebody's popular and has a lot of followers and they're promoting a product does not mean that it's legit or that it works. You need to do your due diligence.” ~ Kerry JenkinsAbout Kerry Jenkins, PA-CKerry Jenkins is a certified physician assistant who has been practicing medical and aesthetic dermatology for over 23 years. The Catalyst: Sparking Creative Transformation in Healthcare
“Seriously? This is all we have to offer?” Tracy Harrison, principal instructor and founding CEO of the School of Applied Functional Medicine, found herself asking this question when her husband suddenly suffered a series of debilitating seizures and was a cocktail of drugs and very little information. This eye-opening incident spotlighted the current state of medicine which offers good disease care, but a major lack of actual health care, which Tracy says should address functional imbalances before such a major loss of vitality as to prompt a diagnosis and treatment. Patient and professional should engage in an ongoing, communicative relationship to maintain the patient's health long term. Not only does this allow a patient ownership and authority over their own health, but allows the practitioners to be actualized. Incentive is key. People don't want to feel bound to a third party and a set of rules. Science shows there is no one path to health, and Tracy discusses the need to veer away from perfectionist mindset. At the School of Applied Functional Medicine, students' diverse backgrounds allow each to contribute their own unique genius to the curriculum. The approaches discussed here present a significant potential unburdening of disease care. Moreover, reactions from patients remind Tracy and Lara why they are so dedicated to the good medicine movement. Quotes • “We need a whole separate initiative and system that promotes…functional balance that naturally repels disease.” (5:05-5:23 | Tracy) • “The car parked at the top of the hill…If you let it pick up some speed going downhill, it's going to land in the ditch. It's going to go in the lake.” (7:07-7:25 | Tracy) • “You don't evaluate the function of a car outside of the state of the road, the climate, the environment…we can't separate the functional balance or lack thereof of a human system from diet, stress, sleep, relationships, personal fulfillment or belief systems.” (24:12-24:45 | Tracy) • “We're trying to tell people what the right answer is rather than partner with them to discover the right answer for themselves…no one will ever be sustainably healthy under that set of rules.” (27:09-27:33 | Tracy) • “The day you get that email that says, ‘Oh my gosh, I'm pregnant and I've been trying for years… for the first time ever, I have hope.' There's no greater feeling of fulfillment and satisfaction.” (51:46-52:16 | Tracy) Links Connect with Tracy Harrison: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/schoolappliedfunctionalmed/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AppliedFunctionalMedicine Connect with Lara: Website: https://drlarasalyer.com Instagram: @drlarasalyer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drlarasalyer Linked-In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlarasalyer/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DrLaraSalyer TikTok: @Creativity.Doctor Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

How do you build your dream practice? That's the question we're exploring in the latest episode of Getting To YES – examining the key ingredients needed to create a practice that you feel passionate about, that lights you up, and that supports how you want to live your life. As you will discover in my conversation with Jennifer Wheeler, there's a smarter approach to either launch your first practice or reinvent your existing practice... without years of trial-and-error. For those that don't know Jennifer Wheeler, she's the founder and CEO of MNDSHFT Health - a practice aligned around high-level functional medicine programs. A family nurse practitioner and clinical physiologist by training, Jennifer completed advanced studies with the Institute for Functional Medicine and the School of Applied Functional Medicine – and she's also mentoring countless practitioners on how to create a dream practice that's aligned with the practitioner's values. Listen in to learn: Her advice to her younger self... on how to build with intention, creating a practice that integrates & supports how you want to live How to decide between a lower-volume boutique-style practice vs. a higher-volume conventional practice The importance of setting up the practice for "flow"... with streamlined systems, processes and programs How to pick your strategy to attract your ideal dream clients The mindset shift needed to evolve from "selling" to "serving" – and the critical importance to define your vision, values and beliefs. The importance of mentorship – and how to decide whether a more intimate 1:1 mentorship or group coaching is what you need Quotes We have to create a practice that's built upon what we value, what we're good at, what we're passionate about teaching. (09:17 | 09:27 Jennifer) As a practitioner, you can start a practice that's higher, or somewhere in the middle, or that's smaller volume. And whether which road you choose to go down is going to be based upon what your vision is, what you wanna bring to life. (10:54 | 11:08 Jennifer) The important thing to the success of creating the practice is honing in on the vision. And the vision is always gonna be grounded in who you are, what you value, & what you're good at. (11:32 | 11:47 Jennifer) Decide what you value, what you wanna create, and then move forward with the choice to honor that. Welcome to the first episode of Thrive Beyond Size! I am excited to move past weight loss as a focus because dieting causes us harm. So going forward, we're going to talk about living your beautiful and vibrant life in the body you have right now. For this first episode I talk with Christa Elza who is a board certified nurse practitioner who helps clients around the country through her virtual health practice. Christa and I talk about her functional medicine path and how hormones, lifestyle, and nutrition come together to affect our health. How much about our body chemistry do we really know? Because our hormones, which include insulin, play a very big part in how we feel and how we gain weight. Christa works in areas like how metabolic health is affected by hormones, the clearing of blood glucose, how our adrenal gland is functioning, and the effect of stress on our bodily health. This is what our conversation explores, how hormones and hormonal imbalances directly impact our health and weight, specifically in women. Christa shares her expertise and offers insight into the quality of food we should be eating and the types of exercise that contribute best to our health, as well as explaining the root causes of what we feel when we feel it. I learned a lot from her and I hope you get as much value from our conversation as I did.About Christa Elza:Christa graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 2000. Are you one of the people who are pursuing the cash practice but keep seeing trends in your own life that are not that healthy, but at the same time, you are thinking that you can make a bigger impact on other people's lives with your clinic perspective? How will you help people help themselves? What do you want with your life? Do you want freedom and flexibility? This week's Uncaged Clinicians, Josh Payne goes solo to interview our guest, Austin Lake. They will be talking about how to go out and impact your circle while having your freedom and flexibility as a business owner and how to uncover the growth of an online business while figuring out who your audience truly is. Dr. Austin Lake is the founder of Theophilus Health and the creator of the Active Life Program. He received his B.S. in Exercise Science from the University of Northern Colorado where he minored in biology. Dr. Lake specializes in helping women 35-65 optimize their energy levels, reduce pain, lose weight, and most importantly, live an ACTIVE LIFE! Dr. Lake does not prescribe medications. But his goal is to safely assist women in getting off medications by using alternative healing methods with a functional medicine perspective. They will touch on such topics as: Decide what you want before you start going after it. The only power that the devil has over us is deception. It will use deception to ruin our lives. From the social media perspective, you have to know your audience. Figure out what the audience wants and provide value to them as much as you possibly can. If you want to pursue your business on social media, have a conviction about it and speak from experience. Let people know that you are not holding things back and that you are just trying to help them out. The more you can renew your mind, keep your focus, and remind yourself why you want to have freedom and the ability to give and share what you have with others, the more it will bless you. “Find your joy again. It doesn't have to be necessarily what you were doing before.” – Kimberly Quirk What happens when you have a chronic illness — and you're an entrepreneur and mom? How do you make it work? Today I'm talking with Kimberly Quirk, FLOW365 member and Live Well Health Founder. Her passion for working with her health coaching clients stems from her own chronic illness. Listening to your body is important for all of us, but especially so when you are dealing with chronic illness. That can be hard when you are exhausted, taking care of kids, trying to work, and taking care of all the other stuff. But if you don't listen, your body will get louder. Kimberly shares the progress she's made and the power of finding your joy again. Overwhelm is real, so small wins really matter. Kimberly offers hope and practical support to people living with chronic illness. We talk about: The power of rest and why we should stop thinking of rest as lazy The sleuthing that is needed to find answers when it comes to chronic illness How food can make a difference Kimberly shares that her experience in FLOW has helped her: Balance the different parts of her life by rethinking time Feeling more purpose and meaning Feel accountable This is part of a series where we will be highlighting the work of some FLOW365ers. I ask each one, what are three pieces of advice from your expertise that you know will serve the Plan SImple audience. Because they know the process so well and are part of the audience, their pieces of advice are so valuable! Kimberly's three pieces of wisdom: LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. Our bodies hold a lot of wisdom, but we don't always listen. Whether you have chronic illness or not, listen to what your body is telling you. Do you need rest? Is the food you are eating not serving you? Is something “off”? That's a sign to make a change. NOTICE WHAT BRINGS JOY. Kimberly reminds us that what brings joy may not be what it was before. What is bringing you joy now? Remember, it doesn't have to be something big—it could be doggie kisses or the sun on your face or a favorite song coming on. Notice what brings joy and seek more of that. BE A FOOD SLEUTH. One thing that can make a big difference in our health, our energy, and even our mood, is food. You could try an elimination diet to see how you do off different foods. You could also just start by noticing how you feel after eating certain foods. Are there foods that make you sleepy, antsy, achy …? What happens if you don't eat that food? Get curious. ABOUT KIMBERLY QUIRK Kimberley Quirk is founder of Live Well Health Coaching, LLC and a health coach who is passionate about working with women over 40 to overcome their chronic lyme disease healing blocks. She became a health coach because of her own health crisis as she has struggled for a decade with chronic illness from lyme disease, toxic mold illness, mast cell activation syndrome, hashimoto's thyroiditis, POTS, chronic urticaria, depression, anxiety, and SIBO. Food is a huge part of most cultures. Yet, most people don't realize how the food you eat influences how you think, feel, and behave. What is Functional Medicine? Functional medicine is dedicated to getting to the root of the problem. Traditional medicine focuses on diagnosis and treatment, usually with pharmaceuticals. Functional medicine focuses on supporting the body more naturally in order to reestablish balance. If you aren't feeling well, lack energy, etc., functional medicine can be used to dive deeper into the root cause of the imbalance in your body. This is a scientific but more natural approach. Both gut health and hormones are critical for our overall health, including our mental health. Gut health in relation to how the food you eat influences how you think The enteric nervous system is housed in our gut, which means the gut is home to a large portion of our nervous system. In addition, the vagus nerve runs from the gut to the brain. This is how our body communicates either the flight or fight mechanism or rest and digest. The gut is regulated by the microbiome, bacteria in our gut, when the balance is off, the communication to our brain is skewed. And, when the microbiome is off, there is inflammation in the gut as well as in other areas of the body. When you are stressed, your gut health is not prioritized by the body. The gut suffers. Acid levels are altered and nutrients aren't absorbed properly. As a result, you can experience hormonal imbalances, inflammation, and a host of other things. This is why our gut health is so important. If you are struggling with mental health challenges, anxiety, brain fog, depression, or lack of focus, start with nutrition. What are you eating to nourish your body? What foods to avoid to lessen the impact on brain function Gluten - whether you have Celiac disease or not, you can have a gluten sensitivity because gluten causes inflammation in the gut lining which can cause inflammation in other areas of the brain, like brain fog. Gluten and other foods that cause inflammation in the gut affect the mucosa lining the gut. If it becomes too thin, things that are supposed to stay in the cut can cross over and get into the body. This creates an immune response because the body sees these things as foreign objects and thinks it needs to attack them to get rid of them. As a result, the inflammatory by-products of the immune response target other tissues like joints or skin, and you may experience reactions like pain or acne. Likewise, this reaction can result in inflammation in the brain and therefore you may experience brain fog. Corn and soy products are highly inflammatory and are often sprayed heavily with pesticides. In addition, there may be a cross-sensitivity with gluten. You won't necessarily have to avoid them forever, but eliminate them from your diet and reintroduce them when you are asymptomatic. Canola and vegetable oils Artificial colors and sweeteners Preservatives Refined carbohydrates like pasta, bread, pastries, and sugary foods can also cause inflammation. In addition, they may cause a glucose spike which will cause inflammation and affect mental health. Alcohol can mess with your neurotransmitters. Caffeine may not be metabolized as well in certain people. Think about eliminating these items 90% of the time and maybe allow yourself a treat 10% of the time. Where do you start to change your nutrition habits if concerned with how the food you eat influences how you think? Changing nutrition habits is very specific to each individual and their unique symptoms. If you have a lot of gut symptoms, it may be best to do a more comprehensive removal of food. However, if struggling with mental health challenges, but your gut seems okay, eliminate foods based on what's attainable to you. Throwing everything away or eliminating everything at once may not be feasible. If you are going to remove one item at a time, start with gluten. If you can't fully eliminate items, at least reduce them. Listen to episode 169 with Karolina Rzadkowolska. How to alter your alcohol consumption if you are concerned with how the food you eat influences how you think. If you drink every day, cut back to fewer days a week. If drinking multiple drinks every day, cut back to one drink per day. One glass of wine is not going to be the most terrible thing you do for yourself. However, it is important to consider when you drink. If you drink later in the evening, alcohol can influence your sleep because of an imbalance in GABA-glutamate and you'll wake up at around 2 AM and may experience hot flashes, and be thirsty. If you are drinking and you aren't sleeping, think about drinking earlier so that the alcohol metabolizes before you go to bed. Likewise, if you drink a lot, it will alter the food you crave and you'll lean towards less nutritious food in addition to increasing anxiety. One drink per night is probably fine for most people, but observe how it affects you. Let's talk about coffee Caffeine may increase anxiety. It is very specific to how you metabolize caffeine. Matcha green tea is a good alternative because it has caffeine but the caffeine is released steadily so you don't experience the peak and crash like with coffee. It also has L-Thiamine, which is a calming component. Therefore it can help you focus, but you can avoid the jitters or rise in anxiety. If you tolerate coffee, that's great. However, if you think caffeine might be a trigger for you, consider decreasing the intake or changing to Matcha tea. Another tip about coffee is to drink organic because it is often heavily sprayed with pesticides. Decaf coffee may be okay, but because of contamination with mold, Layne highly recommends going with an organic Matcha or green tea. Back to corn and its role in how the food you eat influences the way you think. In general, corn isn't the enemy, it's the processing. However, if you are gluten intolerant, you may cross-react to corn. If this is the case, eliminate it for a while until the gut heals and the mucosa lining builds back up, and then reintroduce it. Layne recommends Siete chips and tortillas because they are made with whole grains versus corn. Soy and its role in how the food you eat influences the way you think. The problem with soy is how it is sprayed and processed. Fermented organic soy is better for you. Do not eat inorganic soy. Tempe is an alternate form of soy, as well as tofu. The Dutch test is a comprehensive test for measuring hormones and determining your digestive pathways. Some people do really well with soy products but for other people, it may put them at higher risk for cancer. Are carbohydrates really the bad guy? Demonizing and avoiding carbs completely is not the best option because you need the micronutrients from fruits. It is the processed carbs that you want to be mindful of. Eat as many fruits and sweet potatoes as you want. To have a really well-balanced nutritious diet you need fruits and vegetables. Avoid white, wheat, and processed bread products. Bread products made from seeds and whole grains are better. But your body sees pasta and bread as sugars. But keep the fruits, potatoes, and vegetables. If going to have carbohydrates, eat the vegetables/fruits first, then the protein, and then the carbohydrates to avoid spikes in blood sugar. It is more about balance and moderation than eliminating completely. Will a gluten-free diet help you lose weight? A gluten-free diet may help you lose weight simply because you are eliminating foods that have been causing inflammation. It does eliminate a lot of the carbohydrates, so there may be weight loss but the goal of a gluten-free diet is to decrease inflammation, not necessarily to lose weight. What should you eat if concerned about how the food you eat influences how you think and you want to ensure a healthy body and brain? Whole foods are important as your main nutrition source. Eat as little processed food as possible. It is best to eat an array of colorful fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables provide antioxidants to decrease inflammation and micronutrients your body needs to detox, balance hormones and feed the good gut bacteria. Good gut bacteria are critical for how our nervous system communicates with our brain. Wild blueberries are one of the top fruits for antioxidant benefits. Try to have 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Healthy fats are also important for every cell in our body to have good integrity and for brain function. Salmon is Layne's favorite healthy fat but she suggested wild-caught salmon because it is the best form. You can also incorporate nuts and seeds, or even drizzle olive oil over your food. Aim for 5 servings of healthy fats a day. Avocados are also a healthy fat. Protein is also very important for brain health. Protein is made up of amino acids and they help our neurotransmitters work properly. Try to eat 30 grams of proteins in every meal. Eating 30 grams of protein for breakfast sets you up for success throughout the day and helps prevent the sugary cravings later in the day. Salmon is also a great source of protein, as well as chicken thighs. It is better to have bone-in chicken because of the nutrients and flavor. Eat a variety of meats, and red meat once or twice a week. A good healthy protein powder is also nice to have on hand because it is hard to get 30 grams of protein in every meal without a little bit of supplement. Nuzest is a clean lean protein powder option. Stress resiliency Stress never really goes away so we need to know how to handle it. Self-care is important for stress resilience. Eating healthy and stepping back from electronics and allowing yourself rest time. Magnesium is an important supplement for neurologic help. Layne recommends the glycinate and L Threonate forms of magnesium. These salts cross the blood-brain barrier. B Vitamins are also important for energy production and nervous system function. Nutrition is important and getting plenty of water is important. Our cells need water to function and energy is needed for our cells. Our parasympathetic nervous system is where we rest and digest. We want this to be our dominant nervous system. Ways to activate it include deep cleansing breaths, getting fresh air, and nature will help lower stress hormones, and focus on movement, exercise will help boost endorphins and help you feel better. In addition, if you have a caffeine intolerance, switch to Matcha or green tea to help you focus. The L Thianine will also help calm you. With anything that you are doing to make big changes, start small. Pick one thing that resonates most and be consistent with that. Set short attainable goals. The top 2 things to keep your mind and body healthy Nutrition - improve your nutrition, whole foods and fruits, and vegetables Regulate your nervous system - take 5 minutes twice a day for breathing, deep cleansing breaths. Mom Michele Duffy has her Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree from Creighton University, received her Functional Medicine Practitioner training at both the Institute of Functional Medicine and the School of Applied Functional Medicine. and has a background in trauma and pediatrics. Daughter Kate van Es has her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and is a Certified Health Coach from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. SHE is a holistically-minded, functionally-trained, mother-daughter duo on a mission to transform women's treatment in the medical community from inferior to superior. From our first experiences as young girls and throughout our final days, we are drastically under-educated about our bodies, medically misinformed, and lied to by the people we trust to take care of us and offer solutions to our pain, symptoms, and confusion. Often, our experiences as women are normalized when they're anything BUT normal (and are actually symptoms that something is off/wrong and deserves care/attention)! They founded SHE Health to bring unfiltered education, truthful advice, and functional medical care and coaching to help women heal through every stage of their lives while delivering a superior health experience where women's voices and needs are not only centered/prioritized but trusted. Oh BOY, do we have a story for you all today... In this episode, we're interviewing Kira Whitman! Kira Whitham is a Functional Nutrition Specialist, mom, and former middle school teacher. She's a graduate of Hawthorn University and the School of Applied Functional Medicine and is now pursuing her Traditional ND. Her own digestive health issues led her to study nutrition, and then after her first child was born, her husband was diagnosed with two autoimmune disorders back-to-back. At that point, she made it her mission to better understand what causes the body to 'fail,' and what can be done to prevent it beyond just food. Kira combines the principles of holistic nutrition and functional medicine to help people bring their bodies back to their intended state of wellness. She is a firm believer that the body has an innate ability to heal, and will do so when given the right tools. You can find out more about Kira by going to www.anourishedlifenutrition.com. In 1999, Helen Revans came to a fork in her life's journey. Either she could settle for a steady, yet unfulfilling future with a man who wasn't right for her or break off her engagement and follow her dreams. With great courage, and following her gut instinct, Helen chose the latter path. She removed her engagement ring at Heathrow Airport and flew alone to Hong Kong to take up the position of Head of Food Preparation and Nutrition at an international school. Here began the adventure of a lifetime. It was a choice that changed not only Helen's life, but the lives of many others who she inspired through her teaching, coaching and charity work. Throughout her life, Helen has relied on her intuitive wisdom. It was following her ‘inner voice' that led her into the world of coaching. In 2004, Helen became Hong Kong's first ‘Fearless Living' life coach, which enabled her to launch her coaching practice ‘Fearless in Life'. Soon after this, during a trip to Cambodia, Helen experienced another life-changing moment. Returning to her accommodation one evening, she witnessed a small homeless child, all alone, whimpering in a gutter. Distraught by what she'd seen, Helen could not forget this pitiful sight. She was determined to help. On her return to Hong Kong, Helen launched a pioneering community service project called ‘Caring for Cambodia'. Not content with these extraordinary achievements, Helen enrolled at The School of Applied Functional Medicine in 2019 and subsequently rebranded her company as “Nurture Your Life”. Through this business, Helen continues to transform people's lives with her remarkably successful, functional medicine approach to ‘gut and hormone' health.

Nurse practitioner Cindy and nurse practitioner Lisa Vasile discuss why they both moved to a functional approach to care for their patients. Using a comprehensive approach, offering education, and providing nutritional support can improve many symptoms that have not been resolved with a conventional approach. It is all too often that both these practitioners see patients after they have gone to several providers previously without getting answers to their health issues. Today I'm excited to have my mentor and instructor, Tracy Harrison, on the show. She is an MIT-educated engineer turned functional medicine advocate and educator. Her school, http://www.appliedfunctionalmedicine.com/ (The School of Applied Functional Medicine), might be the future of healthcare. So… what the heck is functional medicine? Functional medicine is the science of identifying the true root causes of disease in each unique person's body and working with them to reverse those root causes. Modern medical practitioners are trained to diagnose disease, after it is present, and help people manage it – functional medicine practitioners are trained to help people maintain a state of wellness through personalized nutrition and lifestyle changes. Tracy saw a need for applied functional medicine because the physician-led, prescription-heavy, and one-size-fits-all nature of triage care is, generally, applied to every area of medicine. It's an incredibly useful system that saves lives in emergencies, but it doesn't always encourage good health care. Health care – the idea of caring for and maintaining an individual's health so that they stay well – doesn't really exist in the United States. However, Tracy is particularly passionate about teaching health coaches because she believes that a combination of functional medicine and coaching will really transform healthcare, and the people being cared for. She doesn't want to replace the physicians, nurses, or other medical professionals currently helping people... but she does want to supplement those teams with health coaches who can support and advocate for patient wellness. “We spend a lot of time arguing about who should be paying for healthcare, but what I want is healthcare that is worth paying for and that actually works.” –Tracy Harrison -- Resources: Learn more: http://www.appliedfunctionalmedicine.com/ (The School of Applied Functional Medicine) | https://www.facebook.com/AppliedFunctionalMedicine/ (Facebook) Vist https://thisishuso.com/rebel (thisishuso.com/rebel) and use the code REBEL25 to save $25 Get my free Lab Tracker Report by texting REBEL to 66866 Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living? In this episode of the podcast the doctors interview Cindy Kennedy, MS, FNP-BC. Cindy is a nurse practitioner who practices functional medicine and has a special interest in Lyme Disease. While there are many things that can trigger hypothyroidism, Lyme disease is being discussed more as a possible trigger for some with hypothyroidism. In this episode the following topics are covered: Brief history of Lyme disease? Is Lyme disease at epidemic proportions? Why Lyme disease can be so difficult to treat if not caught early on? What is the association between Lyme and thyroid issues How to address Lyme and hypothyroidism Cindy loves working with people who need compassion and help dealing with chronic health issues that have gone unresolved with general medical care. The belief that everyone deserves optimal wellness, is the driving factor behind her starting to practice functional medicine. Her own struggles with undiagnosed Lyme disease was the very beginning of the journey into the functional medical space. While working in health care for more than 20 yrs. as a Nurse Practitioner, she began having unexplainable health issues with multiple symptoms. This is when she became the patient as she started her journey with Lyme disease. Her basic allopathic training was not enough to get to the root of why her body was unable to heal from Lyme disease. Working on diet, stress reduction, detoxification, sleep strategies and light exercise she realized that just antibiotics and herbs were not going to help her heal. It was the whole-body approach that would make the difference. Because true healing after a chronic illness does not happen overnight, Cindy learned to have patience and belief in the process. It became time for her to help others and in 2017, she began using podcasting as a way to help people learn more about Lyme disease. Her show, Living With Lyme. Has been well received and has become a wonderful resource for many. This site is available at: http://livingwithlyme.us After practicing gynecology for over 20 years, she left to pursue her passion to help others more thoroughly. Studying with the Institute of Functional Medicine and the School of Applied Functional Medicine she and her daughter Kerah, a registered dietitian, opened their functional medicine practice, Pursue Wellness. They work both in person and virtually. The Integrative Health Center and Spa in East Longmeadow, MA, welcomes patients and clients from the New England area. Jennifer Ragazzo is a Functional Medicine Health Coach. April Johnson is a Functional Medicine Health Coach and the Founder of Journey to Healthy Living. She graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in January 2017. While at IIN she was trained on numerous coaching methods and educated on 100 dietary theories. After completing her education with IIN and graduated as a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, she felt a calling to learn more about the interconnectedness of the body and how she could really help her clients on a much deeper level. This is when she gravitated toward learning functional medicine concepts. She enrolled into The School of Applied Functional Medicine in September 2018. She completed her 1st semester in April 2019 and passed her Level 1 exam for her certification in the following months. She is currently enrolled in her 2nd semester that started in September 2019. She is working on obtaining her certification as an Applied Functional Medicine Health Coach this year. She got into health coaching because of her own health and wellness journey. She started learning about the food industry back in 2010. Once she learned about processed food, additives, preservatives, and GMO’s, she and her husband decided that they needed to change the way they were eating. They both got heavily involved with March Against Monsanto rallies and made a trip to Washington DC when the DARK act was being introduced. From food, she continued self-educating herself in the health and wellness area. Her and her husband started making changes to their food and lifestyle by adding a garden, canning, raising chickens, planting native flowers for bees and butterflies, and supporting the local farmers. As she was on her own journey, she began to see how many people were truly sick. These people had been dealing with their symptoms for so many years and felt there was no way they could ever feel normal again. She wanted to let them know that they don’t have to accept this as their way of living. That you don’t have to accept feeling like crap every single day. She wanted to be a source of hope to others that they can feel well and get back to their normal selves. Her education taught her that with every health-related symptom there is a root cause, and this is unique to every individual. It’s all about putting the puzzle pieces together to locate what that root cause is and that’s what she does with her clients. She loves being a health detective and help her clients find what works for them so that they are thriving again. As a FM Health Coach, she knows that every person is unique and so should the approach to helping them in their health journey. She educates her clients on the fundamentals when it comes to health and is there to empower her clients as they make the necessary changes to their food and lifestyle. In this episode, I talk with Jodie Campbell, Nutrition + Digestive Health Coach about the importance of understanding how your Gut can have a direct impact on the brain. Did you know that your gut is considered your second brain? We go deep into this conversation, Jodie believes that it all starts with the Gut. It is one thing to pay attention to our brain but have you considered all the factors that influence it? I invite you to this very informative talk with Coach Jodie. About Coach Jodie Campbell Years ago, healing my own digestive system had a massive ripple effect on my whole body. No more migraines, lactose intolerance, IBS, mood swings, poor complexion, sugar cravings, low immunity, PMS, or lack of energy. Of course, it wasn’t an overnight transformation. It started with multiple doctors visits, fear-based media and marketing that manipulated my food choices, and fad diets with a nauseating amount of conflicting advice. What I needed more than anything at the time was someone to shoot it to me straight, someone to actually help! And so instead of looking for her, I became her. I’ve been a Certified Holistic Health Coach for 7 years, with formal training from the Institute of Integrated Nutrition and Nutrition Advisory training for the Sanoviv Medical Institute. Current student at the School for Applied Functional Medicine. Through my ongoing training and deep experiences with hundreds of clients, I’ve seen firsthand that most people have a compromised digestive tract. Now sitting at nearly 150 episodes, I've come to realize that there's one topic that we haven't unpacked or explored nearly as much as we should have. And that is autoimmune conditions. Autoimmune conditions affect women infinitely more frequently than they do men — and especially for busy, stressed-out ladies like ourselves! So today, I've asked one of my friends — Dr. Alison Danby, a renowned expert on autoimmune conditions — to come on and share her wisdom all about autoimmune conditions. She's going to take us through why it is that so many women are actually missing out on the opportunity to be diagnosed with an autoimmune condition and what we should all be looking at not only to reverse them but to prevent them from emerging in the first place! Key Takeaways: [1:02] About today's episode with Dr. Alison Danby! [1:57] Welcoming Dr. Alison Danby to the podcast! [2:27] Alison tells us about her background and why autoimmune conditions are an area of women's health that she is so passionate about. [3:26] What exactly does it mean to have an autoimmune condition? [4:41] Are autoimmune conditions happening with an increased frequency or are we just becoming better at detecting them earlier on? [5:45] A third of the women we see in our practice have positive antibodies against the thyroid. Is this trend something Dr. Danby is also seeing in her own practice? [6:44] The importance of running antibody tests to check for autoimmune conditions. [8:33] Why are women more at risk for autoimmune conditions than men? [10:18] Dr. Danby shares some of the tools she uses in and out of her practice for measuring the effects of stress. [11:03] Why heart rate variability is so vitally important. Before her journey led her to naturopathic medicine, she received a Bachelor of Education in secondary school mathematics and health education at the University of Exeter, UK, teaching in England and Canada for two and a half years. Dr. Danby knew she wanted something different, though, and so she returned to Canada to attend medical school — but not your regular medical school. She wanted to learn proactive medicine so she completed a four-year program in Naturopathic Medicine at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) in Toronto, Ontario. Dr. Alison Danby always knew there was more to learn and more to offer her future patients, so to further her education and compliment her background in Naturopathic medicine, she delved into the world of integrative and evidence-based medicine. She completed Advanced Training in Applied Functional Medicine at the Institute of Functional Medicine. Dr. Danby believes in the life-changing effects of Naturopathic Medicine, and so for the last half-decade, she has also been a representative on the Provincial and National Associations of Naturopathic Doctors. The day this episode airs, I will be just 60 days away from 60 years old. So, I want to share a little bit about what that means to me, the journey I've been on, and how I made my 50s the healthiest years of my life. When I was diagnosed with metabolic syndrome in 2007, I immediately took action and made significant lifestyle changes. I dramatically reduced my weight from 289 pounds to 180 pounds, and along the way, I became passionately interested in functional medicine. Eventually, I received my certification for functional health coaching through the School of Applied Functional Medicine, and I now believe that everyone can benefit from knowing more about functional medicine. What is metabolic syndrome? Metabolic syndrome is a metabolic disorder that involves not one, not two, but a combination of three or more of the following health issues: abdominal obesity, high blood sugar, high triglyceride levels, high blood pressure, and low HDL (“good”) cholesterol. The term “metabolic” refers to the biochemical processes involved in the body's normal functioning. When you have metabolic syndrome, your body is in a state of serious malfunction. Metabolic syndrome increases your risk for some very concerning and possibly deadly health issues, including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Foods that Make Metabolic Syndrome Worse Fake and processed foods. This isn't exactly new information for anyone, I hope, and it's not hard to figure out why processed foods contribute to these health issues. If you don't know what the ingredients are in what you're eating, or you can't pronounce them, there's a decent chance it's not good for you. Artificial Sweeteners. Products like Splenda have been directly linked with the occurrence of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Accumulating evidence suggests that frequent consumers of sugar substitutes containing aspartame, sucralose, and saccharin may also be at an increased risk of excessive weight gain, as well as development of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. This also includes diet sodas, which generally just replace high fructose corn syrup with artificial sweeteners. Trans Fats (Trans Fatty Acids). Trans fats are found in foods made with hydrogenated oils and fats, such as margarine; baked goods like cookies, cakes and pies; crackers; frostings; and coffee creamers. They raise LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which is bad news for your waistline, heart health and metabolic disorders. Refined Carbohydrates and Sugar. Consumption of these two are major culprits when it comes to high blood sugar levels, insulin resistance, and the development of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Sugar, especially when used to sweeten beverages, is a major culprit, as are refined carbs. A recent study conducted in Korea, where metabolic syndrome incidence is high, looked at the effects of refined carbohydrates on this metabolic disorder. What the researchers found was that “the percentage of energy from carbohydrates in men and intake of refined grains, including white rice, in women were associated with metabolic syndrome.” Alcohol. Limiting alcohol intake is key to metabolic syndrome and good health in general. Medications for Metabolic Syndrome High blood pressure medicines, Beta-Blockers, are one of the oldest and safest classes of antihypertensive drugs. They lower blood pressure by reducing the force and speed of the heartbeat. Nutrients Depleted: Beta Blockers deplete CoQ10 and reduce production of a hormone called Melatonin. By blocking beta receptors, these medications may also block the action of an enzyme needed to make this hormone, which is produced at nightfall and promotes sound sleep.. coenzyme Q10 [CoQ10], a nutrient that helps your heart do its job. CoQ10 life-sustaining antioxidant gets demolished by hundreds of medications, including statin cholesterol drugs, metformin, antidepressants,...

Karen Litzy: 00:08 Of course. And as we were talking about before we got on the air, the way that we were introduced to each other is through Christine Gallagher, who's a really wonderful business coach and she was part of my women in PT Summit, in our inaugural summit a couple of years ago. And so I just want to give a quick shout out to Christine for the hookup here. Karen Litzy: 00:31 She’s great. So now obviously in your bio I talked about the fact that you're a functional medicine health coach, but I have a feeling a lot of people aren't exactly sure what that is or what that means. So would you mind giving the listeners a little bit of background on to what that is exactly. Laurie Seely: 00:48 I got a certification as a health coach and then I continued at the school for Applied Functional Medicine and they offer another certification. And basically that's where I learned all my stuff. You learn about just really how to be a health detective because there are so many symptoms of dis-ease that a lot of doctors will label as an illness. And I was very interested in this kind of, it's not really medicine, but I was very interested in this kind of health detective work because I went through this whole thing myself with IBS and Candida and I still had a couple of pieces left to really, really find health for myself. And it was at this school that I've finally put in the last couple of pieces to make that happen. And so, in the process I became a functional medicine health coach. Isn't that cool? Now I help other people that had the same sort of problems that I once had. Karen Litzy: 02:08 Yeah. And I feel like oftentimes that's kind of the way life takes us, right? We kind of have these experiences and we figure them out for ourselves and then we try and delve a little bit deeper to widen the net and then help others. So I think it's great when you can kind of make that change. But a question, what were you doing before you were a health coach? Laurie Seely: 02:32 Well, I was an opera singer actually. I was singing fulltime in the chorus at the lyric opera of Chicago, which was really, really fun. And actually I just recently quit there. I was doing both at the same time for a while, which was a really difficult juggle. And I feel like this is where my heart lies and my passion now. So yeah, I was an opera singer. Karen Litzy: 03:12 What a career, what a career switch. Yeah. I love talking to people who have had different careers within their life because I always think like it gives people hope, you know? So if you're not doing exactly what you love right now, that there's hope, you may find that thing that kind of, like you said, gives you your passion. Right? Fantastic. All right, so now let's talk about the health coaching aspect of things. So let's say I'm one of your clients. I come to you and I've already been to my doctor or maybe I'm going to see my doctor. So what are some important questions that maybe doctors should be asking us that they're not? Maybe that, yeah, we're not delving into as much. Laurie Seely: 03:49 So I think that the number one most important question a doctor can ask you is what does your poop look like? And specifically, what does it look like and how often do you poop? Because that is your body's way of telling you when there's something wrong. I learned that functional medicine school that most dis ease begins in the gut. We don't say all because we just want to, you know, 99.9% of disease begins in the gut, I would say, right? And that's your first indication. That's your body telling you, hey, there's something wrong. You know? And so we need to be educated on our part. What poops should look like. Right. And I feel like this should be like on the commercials on TV instead of like, you know what pharmaceutical drug can help you with your IBS. Laurie Seely: 04:52 They should be telling us what our poop should look like so it doesn't have to go all the way to IBS. We can see right at the beginning, you know what, I'm pooping little marbles like that's, that was my problem for most of my life. Little marbles with occasional bouts of diarrhea and I went for close to 40 years not knowing that there was anything wrong. If one doctor had asked me what my poop looked like when I was say 12 years old and I was old enough to kind of tell him, well about nine times a day I'm pooping little balls. He'd be like, wow, there's something wrong with you. We need to figure out what it is. And I feel like there's so many people who are in the same boat, you know, it never would have gotten to candida for me. I had a yeast infection for a year, every single day. And if somebody had asked me at 12 years old, what does my poop look like? I just, I feel like it never would have gotten that bad. And I feel like there's so many other people in this world who are in the same boat, you know, and who are maybe at some sort of state of disease that really could have been kind of nipped in a bud years ago when it was much less. Karen Litzy: 06:05 Hmm. Yeah. And so if we're going there, right? We're going to talk about poop right now. We're in it, we're doing it. Laurie Seely: If you have a conversation with me long enough, it'll eventually go there. Karen Litzy: Yes. This is it. Obviously a very good question that your doctor should be asking, but now if people listening to this next time they go to their doctor, they can bring this up, correct? Laurie Seely: 06:33 Yeah, absolutely. And you want to be very clear because even doctors can mess up with this. You know, there was one chiropractor that I was at who asked, we sort of, we get treated in the same room, a bunch of us, and there was another client, they're getting treated at the same time. And she was making comments that kind of made the chiropractor and me kind of go to, sounds like you're constipated, but we didn't say that. And he asked her, how's your digestion? Laurie Seely: 07:04 She’s like oh, it's fine. And then he left the room and I said, what does your poop look like? How many times do you poop a day? And she said, Oh, I'm pooping like once every 10 days. Oh my God. Yeah. So I was like, wow. Like I didn't want to alarm her, but I sort of explained, you know, that it shouldn't be that way. So, that's the thing, when you talk to your doctor, like get gross, get like in it, tell them what it looks like, what it feels like, the texture, the smell, how long it takes to pass, because they need to know all of those things. And sometimes the doctor's going to get grossed out by that. And you know what, find a different one because you need to be able to talk about this stuff. Karen Litzy: 07:45 Okay. So let's talk about what it should look like. So there is a chart called the Bristol stool chart. So can you tell us what it is and what it should look like? Laurie Seely: 07:59 So on the chart it goes from number one to number seven. So number one is constipation and that's the tiny little balls. Number seven is diarrhea, that's watery stools. And number four is Nirvana poop. Like exactly what it's supposed to be like. It's like soft serve, ice cream texture. And it's not going to smell very much. It's going to be light brown in texture, easy to pass. We're talking one or two minutes and it's all gone all out and it leaves almost nothing to wipe. So that's the, the good stuff. And then they have, you know, the different levels in between one, four and seven also. So you can, you can Google that. There's like great illustrations online. Karen Litzy: 08:50 And so obviously if you're at a one or a seven, we pretty much know something's up, right? Yep. So four is perfect. What if you're at three or a five? I mean, are these things to be worried about? Laurie Seely: 08:56 I honestly, I don't think so. If you're at a three or a five, it's probably not your norm. If that makes sense. Like you want to look at where, where is it usually? Right? What is your pattern? If you have a couple of days with a little bit of stress and suddenly you're pooping tiny little balls, but then you get back to a number four after that, you're good. It was the stress you got over it. Right. Do a little yoga, some deep breathing, you'll be fine. Same thing happens with diarrhea. You know, a lot of people get stressed diarrhea. So if that's a temporary thing and it's due to stress that's temporary, then you're fine. Laurie Seely: 09:49 If it's happening all the time, then you need to know that, yeah, it's a problem and you need to do some detective work there and that's time to do a stool test or to do any number of blood tests for parasites and stuff like that. So that's time when you want to, you want to find out what's causing it. A lot of times like, okay, so I went to my gastroenterologist, I said, I have IBS, I'm constipated all the time. Sometimes I have diarrhea. I told her the whole story and she said, we don't know what causes IBS. Laurie Seely: 10:24 So that's another indication that you need a new doctor. So that's what I did. I got a new doctor because there are so many things that cause IBS and that's time to just find yourself a health detective and figure it out. There's a great test from the Meridian Valley lab called a comprehensive stool analysis and Parasitology times three. So that will tell you all of the expected beneficial flora that you want in there. It'll measure imbalanced flora. Any flora that's dysbiotic or like out of crazy, out of balance. So you know exactly really what's supposed to be there. It's also going to measure how much yeast you have in there because everybody pretty much has yeast in their digestive tract. It's just when it gets overgrown and it's bad. And then it also measures like mucus and then it checks for parasites and it's a three day test. Laurie Seely: 11:26 So if you find a doctor that gave you a stool test and it's just from one bowel movement, that's not a good enough test. If it finds something cool, then you got lucky. But it's good to test over the period of at least three days. There are some stool tests that go up to six days. So the reason for that is that the bacteria and the parasites and the candida, it all travels in groups like in clumps, they like to stick together like a school of fish, right? And from one bowel movement you could be full of parasites and in one bowel movement you pass a whole bunch that doesn't have any parasites in it because they were hanging out somewhere else in your colon. So that's why you want to test over three days. So then you have a pretty good chance that if there's any parasites in there, you've found them. Karen Litzy: 12:27 Yeah, that makes sense to me. And now let's say you do this test and something is positive. Where do you go from there? Laurie Seely: Well, there's a lot of things you can do about that. It depends on your doctor. He might give you a pharmaceutical antiparasitic drug to take, which can be effective and there's the possibility that it's not effective as well. You always want to retest. What I do with my clients is I use a product from young living essential oil as it's the best thing that I've found so far, the most effective and it's called para free and it's full of various essential oils and all. So, other ingredients that are known to support intestinal health and are, I can't say that they're known to kill things because it hasn't been approved by the FDA, but I've seen in my practice and in my own body and in my mother's body, that it clears up parasites. Karen Litzy: 15:29 So now let's say you do this comprehensive stool analysis and you find something, it's treated either by your physician with the pharmaceutical or through the essential oils, but I guess it's probably important to note that with the essential oils that like you said, they're not FDA approved and they're not studied or tested. It's just more like anecdotal stuff. Laurie Seely: 16:01 There are many case studies and actually it seems like from the case studies that the para free is actually more useful. Karen Litzy: 16:14 Well it would probably behoove someone to do some research on that because it's hard to I think get buy in from a lot of people when something isn't well-researched. That's a word I was going to say, test it. But research is probably better. Probably a better way to put that. So, you know, at least someone will, we'll do that to help people make a better decision. Laurie Seely: 16:50 Right. Well, here's a thing, the reason why they're not FDA approved is not because the FDA looked into it and disapproved them. It's because the FDA doesn't want to waste their time on something that can't be patented because they're natural ingredients in there. They're not synthetic versions of natural ingredients it’s the actual natural ingredient. And so those things can't be patented and they can't, you know, companies can't make money off of that. And so the FDA doesn't want to use their funding on that. Karen Litzy: 17:23 Right. Yeah. Well hopefully someone can do like a nice comparative study between that and a pharmaceutical and see what works and what doesn't. Laurie Seely: 17:34 I think one of the issues that pharmaceuticals are usually aimed at just one thing. And the para free has been useful in treating a wide range of parasites. So it's like throwing a huge blanket on it. You Kill Them all. But you're right. You're right. It'd be nice if it were more widely publicized. Karen Litzy: 18:05 All right. Now let's say we talked about this a little bit. Let's say you're on the one of the Bristol stool chart, which means that you're constipated and everyone at some point in their life has been, and we know it's not comfortable, so how can we relieve this? Laurie Seely: 18:29 So there's a couple of different ways. It depends on what's causing it. So before doing a stool test, I would try, what I'm going to tell you now, I would first look at how much water are you drinking every day. So the rule of thumb for how much water you should be drinking is you see how many pounds you weigh, divide that by two. And that's how many ounces of water you should be drinking every day. So if you weigh 140, you should be drinking at least 70 ounces of water per day. Right? Now there's a lot of people who are already doing that, but there are a lot of people for whom that would be quite a bit of water. That's really what we need to be doing because, the number one and the Bristol stool chart is an indication that your stool is dehydrated and you're still maybe dehydrated just because you're not drinking enough water, it's possible that the muscles along your colon aren’t functioning absolutely properly and that you're just moving along slowly because there's not enough water in your stool. Laurie Seely: 19:36 So that's the simplest fix. Right? And then also if you do that and you find that it doesn't fix it or it improves it, now you're still drinking more water. Another thing to do is consider that maybe you don't have enough magnesium intake. So a lot of us don't have enough magnesium just because we're not getting it anymore from the fruits and vegetables because of modern day farming practices. It's not in the soil. So if it's not in the soil, can't be in the vegetables and that's where we're supposed to be getting our magnesium from. So we use supplements. So there's, the form of magnesium that helps to stimulate the bowels is called magnesium citrate. And so you just see, you try taking some magnesium citrate and there's a very easy way to figure out how much of that you need. Laurie Seely: 20:32 You want to get the powdered version because it's easier to lower or raise your intake right then like taking a capsule. And so you start with half a teaspoon of magnesium citrate. And you do that for about three days because it takes a while for it to build up in our bodies. And if after about three days you're not moving along the way you want to be, then you raise it by another half teaspoon and you just keep doing that in three day intervals like that until you're where you want to be. And it's possible that you might go up a little too far and have diarrhea and then you know, for sure that half a teaspoon or less than that is what you need. Karen Litzy: 21:17 Right, right. Yeah. So it's a little bit of trial and error there, but I get it. Laurie Seely: 21:22 I mean that if you're trying to do things naturally, that's how it is. Karen Litzy: 21:27 Yeah, for sure. Okay. So we've got lack of water, lack of magnesium. Anything else that can contribute? Laurie Seely: 21:35 Well, we always say we should have more fiber. Right? And that could be part of it as well. So you want to make sure that you're eating enough vegetables because I never recommend a person to get their fiber from things like shredded wheat or bread or things like that. But that's what we see in the media, right? We see like, oh, have your high fiber bread and that's going to help you. Well, wheat actually can irritate the colon. Whether you have a sensitivity to it or not because of the way that it's being produced nowadays. It's a very common irritant. And so that could be, I mean, maybe you're eating bread and that's your problem, right? So if you feel like maybe it's a fiber issue, then the way to get fibers through vegetables and I'm talking about like spinach, Kale, leafy Greens. Karen Litzy: 22:34 Yeah. So that makes sense. So you want to start having more water, kind of eating a little bit healthier and things may even out for you. Okay, great. So is there anything else with constipation that we didn't go over about kind of how to relieve it or what might be causing it? Laurie Seely: 22:55 Well, those are the places that I would start. And if you don't make any headway there, then got to find yourself a health detective, I think. Karen Litzy: 23:07 Yeah. Yeah. All right. Sounds good. Now you made mention of this earlier, but, and I know it's part of your history and kind of why you became a health coach, but talk a little bit about Candida and what it was like for you for 10 plus years. Laurie Seely: 23:28 So, my whole life, this whole thing with my digestion just kept getting worse. I didn't even know that I had a problem. I was unaware of it. That's why I'm here. Like educating people about it, bringing it into the light. Eventually I started having like three to six or more yeast infections every single year, which I also didn't know, but that's considered frequent for yeast infections. And then eventually, this is a little while after I had my daughter. My immune system just tanked and so did my thyroid and I had a yeast infection for every day for an entire year. I remember spending a week at Disney with an itch that I couldn't scratch. It was just horrible. So that's when I finally, I took the plunge. I was googling the whole time, like, there's probably a good 10 years that I was like, why am I getting so many yeast infections? Laurie Seely: 24:32 And I would Google that and it would come up as a candida, you know, a systemic candida infection. I was like, no, no, no. It couldn't be that, because then I of course googled the remedy for that. And it just seemed like so hard and such a problem to go through that I was like, no, it's gotta be something else. It can't be that. So when I finally admitted it, I mean, that was the first day of the rest of my life, you know? And, I started my journey to health Karen Litzy: 25:11 So aside from having the recurrent and constant yeast infections, was there anything else that you noticed that maybe you ignored? Laurie Seely: 25:20 Yes. Looking back, I started to have, when I wasn't constipated, I was having far more urgent diarrhea, which actually led to like public accidents. Very, very embarrassing. And I got some allergies that I had always had some allergies, but it was just so bad that I was seeing an allergist and I was using Flonase and other steroid nasal sprays. And of course that was just making my problem worse because steroids actually kill gut bacteria and that was the root of my problem. And then after that allergies then more yeast infections. That was I think the allergies and the more frequent diarrhea that I didn't put it together. I didn't understand. Karen Litzy: 26:19 Yeah. And that always seems to be the way because especially when you're in it, it's kind of like hard to connect all those dots, right? Because you're just trying to take care of the symptoms. Laurie Seely: 26:30 I was constantly putting band aids on symptoms, not realizing that they had a common cause. And sinus infections also. Yeast kinda likes to live in the warm, wet areas and sinuses are a really good place for them to take up shop. And I had that problem too. Karen Litzy: 26:50 Gosh. What a way to go through life. Laurie Seely: Yeah. Yeah. And you know, there's so many people who are really experiencing this all the time still and also haven't connected the dots, you know. Karen Litzy: Well, you know, hopefully you can raise a little bit more awareness for people and have them be a little more aware of how they poop yes. And what it looks like and the consistency and this smell and all that stuff so that hopefully we can, cause you know, what you put in your body's got to come out, right? So, I think it's important that we pay attention to what our body is doing because like you said, our bodies are pretty good at telling us when things are wrong. When things are out of homeostasis and if checking your poop, that seems pretty easy to me so then you could say, oh, this doesn't seem right. Maybe I should call my doctor about this. Laurie Seely: Exactly. Yes, exactly. Just have to pay attention. Karen Litzy: Yes, we have to pay attention. Well, now is there anything that maybe we didn't cover that you feel like who I really want your listeners to know this. Laurie Seely: 28:21 I think we got everything. Karen Litzy: All right, well then I have one last question for you and it's a question that I ask everyone, and that's knowing where you are now in your life and your career. What advice would you give to yourself, let's say right out of school, or maybe in your case when you first started getting into the opera world? Laurie Seely: 29:05 Oh, well this is, yes. Advice that I wish I'd had. Just keep trying get used to hearing no. Laurie Seely: 29:20 Because in the opera world we deal with a lot of rejection. There's a lot of auditions and you might get out of, I don't know, 20 auditions, you might get one job. So I really would have liked to start to hear that, to know that it was normal. You have all these auditions and just get one job, you know? But I have a very stick-to-it-ness sort of nature to me and I rolled with it. Karen Litzy: 29:52 Gosh, I'm sure so many people have been in your boat many times over and would have loved to have had that advice. And now you have, which I'm very grateful for, something for the listeners. So what is a Freebie for people? Laurie Seely: 30:10 So I have a seven step program that I use with my clients to help them get over candida and repair their gut. And I have a blog post on my website that goes through those seven steps. And it also has a very handy downloadable checklist that you can use as you're going through the program. Laurie Seely: 30:42 So, and it also has a very nice list of Anti-candida foods, foods that are allowed and not allowed on the anti-Candida, a diet that is very handy to print out and just hang in your kitchen so that you can check it every once in a while and see what kind of recipes you want to make for yourself. Because when you're doing the Anti Candida Diet, it can be very difficult and very depressing to try and figure out what there is that you can eat without feeding your candy jar. So for anybody who sort of was thinking, oh, that might be me, I don't know, you can go to my website and check out that post. And there's so many other posts on there about IBS and Candida and food sensitivities and all that stuff. You can go down quite a worm hole on my website. Karen Litzy: 31:33 Perfect. And we'll have the link to the seven steps to kill Candida checklist. We will have the link to that in the show notes over at podcast.healthywealthysmart.com so you can one click and it'll take you there. And where can people find you? Laurie Seely: 31:55 I am at laurieseely.com and I'm also on Facebook at Laurie Seely functional medicine health coach. And I also have a group on Facebook called Candida Ibs and heavy metals education group. Karen Litzy: 32:14 Awesome. And again, we'll have all the links to that. So if you have questions you want to get in touch with Laurie, you can pop over to her website. If you weren't writing all this down, you can go to the podcast website, click onto it and it'll take you right there. So Laurie, thank you so much for coming on and talking to us about poop which is a first for me on the podcast. Laurie Seely: So that's awesome. I'm so glad I get my bad for you. Karen Litzy: It was at first. And hopefully people, no pun intended, got a lot out of this. So Lori, thanks so much for coming on and everyone else, thanks so much for listening. Have a great couple of days and stay healthy, wealthy, and smart. Thanks for listening and subscribing to the podcast! In today's episode with Dr. Selassie, we are going to dive into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. People with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) often hear that they are liars, lazy, delusional, and/or crazy, and it's an illness that affects women in disproportionately large numbers. It is so disheartening to feel unwell and hear from practitioners, friends, or family that there's nothing wrong with you. Dr. Selassie received her Naturopathic Doctorate degree from Bastyr University. Known as "a doctor you can talk to,” her practice is centered on helping people be their healthiest best to live their life's purpose. She helps patient with conditions such as acne, eczema, thyroid disorder, autoimmune diseases, and fibroids. She is a member of the Medical Review Board for the School for Applied Functional Medicine and a proud co-founder of Nat Med Coach. What are the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome? More than just being tired. The fatigue is profound and gets worse after even mild exertion, and it's often accompanied by flu-like symptoms, cognitive dysfunction ("brain fog"), and any combination of about 45 other possible symptoms. Many people describe it as coming down with a nasty flu and never getting any better, or as if they're constantly moving through mud. Someone suffering from CFS is likely to have experienced four or more of the following symptoms for the past six months or more: impaired memory or concentration extreme, prolonged exhaustion and feelings of illness after physical or mental activity (post-exertional malaise) unrefreshing sleep muscle aches and pains joint pain with no swelling or redness a new type of headache or a change in your headache pattern frequent sore throat tender lymph nodes in your neck and near your breast What causes Chronic Fatigue Syndrome? There are lifestyle factors that can lead to a state of chronic fatigue, including: poor diet, leading to nutritional deficiencies obesity high stress too little sleep But there are a number of other potential catalysts for CFS, such as the Epstein-Barr virus, some other kind of nasty viral infection, or even hormonal imbalances. Where do we go from here? How do we treat this debilitating disease? Because the causes of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are multifactorial, the way it's treated has to be as well. This is both good and bad: there is no pill that's going to fix the problem, but by addressing each of the possible causes, anybody can find a solution, and you'll likely find the process easier with the help of a health coach and/or functional medicine or naturopathic doctor. As Dr. Selassie says, what is the patient's story? The causes and treatments will be different for every set of circumstances, but it's impossible to know if an individual doesn't feel safe and comfortable sharing their story. -- Resources: Learn more at www.doctorselassie.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/doctorselassie Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doctorselassie/ Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living? Tracy Harrison is the founder of The School of Applied Functional Medicine. Her passion is teaching practitioners to get to the true root causes of each client's "dis-ease", dysfunction, and imbalance, so they can find dramatic and sustainable relief. Today Tracy discusses Functional Medicine and how it compares to Conventional Treatments. She addresses the importance of a healthy gut as well as the misconception of hormones as they relate to disease in the body.
I want to start off today's episode with a big thank you to my guest, James Maskell, for making me aware of functional medicine and kickstarting the journey I'm on today (even if he didn't know it). Before I started with the School of Applied Functional Medicine, I read his book, The Evolution of Medicine, and was attending Monthly meetings at the Amen Clinic here in Atlanta to watch the Functional Forum as a group. So, again, a big thank you! Who is James Maskell? James Maskell has spent the past decade encouraging a shift away from conventional western medicine and toward a wellness-centered, functional medicine model. To that end, he created Functional Forum, the world's largest integrative medicine conference. He's also the founder of the https://goevomed.com/ (Evolution of Medicine), a community e-commerce platform that provides highly curated and customized resources, tools, products, and services, making it easier and more affordable for conventional doctors to embark on a new way of delivering healthcare. But I brought James on the show to talk about the launch an incredible new project: a health cooperative called KNEW Health, which is poised to fight chronic disease through prevention and by using functional & integrative medicine. What is KNEW Health? I love this quote from James: “Together, we can disrupt the current healthcare model, shifting the paradigm away from the over-dependency on an allopathic, disease-centered model, to create a more sustainable, preventative system.” To bring people together behind this mission, James has been traveling the country with the KNEW Vision Tour, a 22-city, grass-roots effort dedicated to massively raising national awareness about functional medicine as the solution to our nation's health crisis. He's been, of course, sharing his vision for KNEW Health and the integrated set of services that it offers members, which James calls the 5 C's: Culture, Community, Coaching, Care, and Cost Sharing. There's already over a million Americans (including myself) using medical cost sharing models to offset medical costs, similar to insurance but without the same limitations. However, KNEW expands on this concept with a fully realized health plan. Plus, KNEW Health is the first entirely non-denominational medical cost sharing program in the U.S. “As long as you're interested in health and wellness and participate in a healthy lifestyle, you can be part of the KNEW community.” -- Resources: Learn more at https://knewhealth.com/ (https://knewhealth.com/) Listen: The Evolution of Medicine podcast Connect with James: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube Read: The Evolution of Medicine: Join the Movement to Solve Chronic Disease and Fall Back in Love with Medicine Read: Top 10 Ways to Save Money on Healthcare Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living? Boobs Aren't Worth Dying For - Integrative Health and Breast Cancer Recovery
Tracy Harrison is deeply passionate about transforming healthcare with the powerful combination of functional medicine and effective coaching. As a leader and visionary in functional medicine she is the founder of The School of Applied Functional Medicine™ (www.SchoolAFM.com ). SAFM teaches the science and practical application of functional medicine to a rich variety of healthcare practitioners, and Tracy is a beloved educator in the field. With her characteristic warmth, deep knowledge and wisdom Tracy joins us today to discuss how the interconnectedness in a person’s whole life system determines their wellness or illness. She dives into issues that empower breast cancer survivors in restoring health during and after treatment and talks about vibrant health and recovery.
Today I'm excited to have my mentor and instructor, Tracy Harrison, on the show. She is a MIT-educated engineer turned functional medicine advocate and educator. Her school, The School of Applied Functional Medicine, might be the future of health care. So… what the heck is functional medicine? Functional medicine is the science of identifying the true root causes of disease in each unique person's body, and working with them to reverse those root causes. “We spend a lot of time arguing about who should be paying for healthcare, but what I want is healthcare that is worth paying for and that actually works.” –Tracy Harrison Resources: Learn more: The School of Applied Functional Medicine | Facebook Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living?
