The famous Hoysted racing dynasty had its origins in Victoria early in the twentieth century and has produced generations of successful horse trainers. The most celebrated was Fred Hoysted who won 17 Melbourne premierships from his Mentone base. Like most of his predecessors 33 year old Matthew Hoysted began his journey in Wangaratta, before working under the wing of some top Melbourne horsemen. In 2014 he decided on a move to Queensland when a job came up with Tony Gollan after which he spent eight years in partnership with recently retired Steve O'Dea. Matt went solo just over a year ago, and is already making his presence felt in the Brisbane training ranks. He begins the podcast by talking about his on course stabling at Eagle Farm and the close proximity of his home. Matt talks about the success he enjoyed on Saturday March 15th- a quinella in the last race at Eagle Farm and a Gold Coast double which included a win with Hearts Are Better in the 3YO Jewel. He looks back on eighteen rewarding months with Tony Gollan whose star was rising rapidly. Matt says the offer he received from Steve O'Dea was too good to refuse. He spent four years as O'Dea's assistant trainer before being promoted to training partner. He formed an association with Jamie Walter's Proven Thoroughbreds during his time with Steve O'Dea and was delighted when Walter agreed to continue that support following O'Dea's retirement. One of the best horses Hoysted got to co-train with O'Dea was Scallopini who won 13 races and was placed 14 times. He acknowledges the talents of the genuine galloper. Matt says he and Steve O'Dea were usually on the same wavelength when it came to planning the campaigns of horses in their care. He pays a fitting tribute to Uncommon James, the best horse he got to co-train with O'Dea. He looks back on the gelding's Oakleigh Plate win in 2023 as an almost surreal experience. Matt says he wasn't surprised when Steve announced his retirement from the Brisbane training ranks. The young trainer looks back on early days with the O'Dea stable where he met the girl destined to become his wife and the mother of his two young daughters. He talks about Caitlin's pride and joy Pickabee, a daughter of Jet Spur with whom she won five races. Coincidentally, Pickabee would become the dam of Uncommon James. Matt looks back on his formative years in Wangaratta and early tuition from his father Greg. He also spent some time with another training relative Roger Hoysted. He puts the spotlight on grandfather Ron (call me Mick) who trained a Gr 1 sprinter in the 1980's. Another member of the clan to get a mention is Hal Hoysted winner of 25 premierships in north eastern Victoria. Matt relates the stories he's heard from family members about Fred “Father” Hoysted, winner of 17 Melbourne premierships between 1933 and 1958. He talks of the racing blood on the distaff side of his family. His mother Ronda is the daughter of John Hickmott and sister to Robert and Michael- all successful trainers. Matt takes us back to the early years of his racing education and valuable time spent at Flemington and Macedon Lodge. He talks of his association with some high profile horses during his time under the Lloyd Williams banner. He treasures the memory of five years with the late Michael Moroney at Flemington. Matt adds his personal tribute to the many already circulated for the great New Zealand born horseman. For punters listening to the podcast, Matt pointers a couple of promising horses currently in the stable. It's a laid back chat with a young man who has the right pedigree and the right temperament to make it to the top in a very demanding profession.

Episode 192: This week on Thinking Deeply about Primary Education, I'm joined by Lloyd Williams Jones as we discuss effective school leadership over the short, medium and long term. We explore: When taking on a leadership role, what should be the priority for your first 100 days in post? Namely, how should we approach our new responsibilities to give us the best chance of success? You've been in the role for a number of years and made significant gains early on. How do you ensure the school is continually moving forward and progress is sustained? Particularly, after you are gone because we know progress can sometimes be tied to an individual. How do you foster a culture of continuous improvement, particularly when working in challenging circumstances or when things have begun to stagnate? If you could start over, is there anything you would do differently? And much, much more. Whether you're new to the profession or an experienced senior leader, you won't want to miss this one. In the 1970s, a lack of community investment resulted in a large number of people leaving Harlem, a well-known New York City neighborhood in northern Manhattan. Nearly 50,000 people, about a third of the area's population, left to escape violence, crime and poor living conditions. Among those who left was LeeSandra Moore's mother who moved to the state of Virginia. “It was a scary time,” said Moore, now 52 and still living in Harlem. “I couldn't blame her for that.” Those who stayed were mostly poor, Black families. They lived through unrest that followed the 1964 killing of an unarmed Black teenager and the killings of Black leader Malcolm X in 1965 and Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. News reports described Harlem as a “sinking ship.” Percy Sutton was president of the local Manhattan government at the time. As the city's highest-ranking Black official, he knew Harlem needed a lift and started a festival called Harlem Day in 1974. Sutton called up elected officials. He gathered actors, like Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee, entertainers, including Tito Puente and Max Roach, and the poet Maya Angelou to celebrate the first Harlem Day. It honored Harlem's history and shows how the neighborhood became known as "Black Mecca” or the center of Black arts, culture and businesses.萨顿联系了当选官员。他召集了演员,如西德尼·波蒂埃和鲁比·迪,以及表演者,包括蒂托·普恩特和马克斯·罗奇,还有诗人玛雅·安杰卢,共同庆祝了首个哈莱姆日。这个节日纪念了哈莱姆的历史,并展示了这个社区如何成为“黑人麦加”或黑人艺术、文化和商业中心的。“It was such a successful day,” said Lloyd Williams — one of Harlem Day's co-founders and the current president of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce — that it became a week-long yearly event called Harlem Week.“那是一个非常成功的日子,”Lloyd Williams说道,他是哈莱姆日的联合创始人之一,也是现任大哈莱姆商会的主席。这个活动变成了一年一度的周活动,称为哈莱姆周。This year, Harlem Week celebrated its 50th anniversary with 18 days filled with free programming.今年,哈莱姆周庆祝了其50周年纪念,共进行了为期18天的免费活动。The celebration included food, Broadway performances, an Apollo Hour, and a tribute to entertainer Harry Belafonte. It offered financial education and career training, and for children, back-to-school backpacks.庆祝活动包括美食、百老汇演出、阿波罗时光以及对表演者哈里·贝拉方特的致敬。还提供了财务教育和职业培训,为孩子们提供了返校背包。One important part of Harlem Week was an effort to deal with Harlem's long-standing health crises. Medical volunteers checked blood pressure and tested for cancer and diabetes. People learned about drug use, HIV/AIDS and healthy aging.哈莱姆周的一个重要部分是解决哈莱姆长期存在的健康危机。医疗志愿者测量血压,并进行癌症和糖尿病筛查。人们还了解了药物使用、艾滋病和健康老龄化知识。Rev. Al Sharpton leads the National Action Network in Harlem. He said, "Harlem Week has been the constant line through the last 50 years of America's most historic Black neighborhood."艾尔·夏普顿牧师领导了哈莱姆的全国行动网络。他说:“哈莱姆周是过去50年来美国最具历史意义的黑人社区的一条恒久线索。”Organizers and people say Harlem Week has brought new life to the area. The once-deserted neighborhood is now home to restored buildings, new businesses, and immigrants. The streets are filled with jazz, reggae, R&B, and gospel music traditions.组织者和当地人表示,哈莱姆周为该地区带来了新生。这个曾经荒废的社区现在有了修复的建筑、新的企业和移民。街道上充满了爵士、雷鬼、R&B和福音音乐的传统。Moore, the Harlem native whose mother moved to Virginia, watched as big national stores moved in. Sometimes they took the place of local shops and made rents go up. "Some of that is okay, but what about the small business where you can get that great sandwich?" she asked. Moore wants people to eat less fast food, so she teaches healthy eating and cooking to young local students.Moore的母亲搬到了弗吉尼亚,而她是哈莱姆的原住民,她目睹了大规模的全国性商店的进驻。有时它们取代了当地的小店,导致租金上涨。“有些变化是可以接受的,但那些可以让你吃到美味三明治的小店呢?”她问道。Moore希望人们少吃快餐,所以她向当地年轻学生教授健康饮食和烹饪。At Harlem Week, Moore represented GirlTrek, a national movement of Black women supporting health through walking. She said, "I feel like I should have left a long time ago, but something about Harlem draws me back to it."在哈莱姆周,Moore代表GirlTrek,这是一个通过步行支持健康的黑人女性全国运动。她说:“我觉得我早就应该离开,但哈莱姆有某种东西吸引我回到这里。”Moore continued, "Harlem is my beginning. Harlem is my future. Harlem is a huge part of what makes me who I am."Moore继续说道:“哈莱姆是我的起点。哈莱姆是我的未来。哈莱姆是让我成为今天的我的一个重要部分。”

Gwinnett County police were called out to a Sugar Hill home on Tuesday morning and were in a SWAT standoff. Police said they responded to a home near Sycamore Summit NE, which is in the vicinity of Sycamore Elementary School. According to Daily Post news partner Fox 5 Atlanta, police said the situation began when Brookhaven officers attempted to serve a warrant at the home. Neighbors said they heard shots and a male suspect barricaded himself inside the home, Fox 5 reported. Police said the others who lived in the home were outside and no one appears to have been injured. Head over to Gwinnett Daily Post dot com for more information. Gwinnett County police are asking for people who were in the area where a Norcross teenager went missing last summer to come forward in case they have any information about what happened to her. Master Police Officer Hideshi Valle said 16-year-old Susana Morales disappeared on July 26, 2022 while she was walking along Singleton Road, in unincorporated Norcross, to her home, which is located on Santa Anna Drive. Morales sent a text to her mother at 9:40 p.m. on the day of her disappearance and said she was one her way home, but she never arrived. Police are looking for anyone who was in the area of Singleton Road, Steve Reynolds Boulevard and Oak Loch Trace on the night of Morales' disappearance to step forward. Morales left her family's home at about 6 p.m. on the day of her disappearance and walked to a friend's house, which is located nearby. Valle said a phone location app showed Morales appeared to be walking along Singleton Road, in the direction of her home, from Windscape Village Lane between 10:07 p.m. and 10:21 p.m. The phone then showed she was somewhere on Oak Loch Trace between 10:21 p.m. and 10:26 p.m., and she continued to be in that area until her phone was either turned off or died. Morales is described as a Hispanic female who has curly brown hair, brown eyes, two nose rings and a pierced lip. Valle said she is about 5-feet, 2-inches tall and weighs about 117 pounds. Police have released two photos of her. Anyone who has information about Morales' whereabouts is asked to call detectives or Crime Stoppers, which is offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to Morales' safe return. The Gwinnett County Republican Party announced it will host a niece of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. during its Black History Month program this weekend. The Gwinnett GOP's program will be held during its monthly breakfast at 8:45 a.m., on Feb. 4 at the party's headquarters, which is located at 80 Boulder Brook Circle in Lawrenceville. Alveda C. King will be the keynote speaker at the event, which will also feature speeches by FallBack Production Studios co-founder Lucretia Hughes and retired U.S. Marine Corps veteran Charles Lollar. Iraq war veteran Takosha Swan will provide a musical performance. Anyone who would like to attend the event can register at Gwinnett Republicans dot com. Although former Gwinnett resident Lou Llerandi retired from coaching baseball more than a decade ago, he's still in the game. In 2018, Llerandi, who coached and taught at Duluth and Norcross High Schools, established Llerandi Gloves, providing baseball and softball players with an alternative to high-priced brand-named equipment. Although the baseball glove market isn't an easy one to break into, Llerandi said he's sold about 1,000 gloves and touts that while players can selected stock-model gloves, he can also custom-make a mitt from a variety of web and color options. He's also sold a lot of infield training gloves (which are particularly small), softball gloves and even a couple of left-handed catcher's mitts. A Tampa native, Llerandi said he sells Japanese Kip Leather gloves for $290, steer hide gloves for $250 and cowhide for $180, prices he said include shipping and embroidery. The gloves are made in China, at the same manufacturing plant utilized by Marucci Sports and Under Armour. A big moment for Llerandi and his brand came this past spring when the Odessa (Texas) College Wranglers, who bought gloves for the team, finished third in the NJCAA Division I national tournament. The company also has endorsements from two professionals. Carlos Tosca, who some may recall as Fredi Gonzalez's bench coach for the Atlanta Braves from 2011 to 2016 and at the turn of the century managed the Kansas City Royals for a couple of years, is a friend of Llerandi's and offered his support. Shelby Pendley, a veteran softball professional who was a three-time All-American at Oklahoma, has also given her endorsement. Noting that most major college baseball and softball programs have equipment agreements in place but Division II, Division III and NAIA schools do not, Llerandi looks forward to the potential of the coming year. The Philadelphia Winn Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution recently honored Berkmar High School teacher Lloyd Williams with its Outstanding Teacher in American History Award. Club officials said the award is determined “by the candidate's knowledge of American history and the readiness that it is shared with students, the spirit of patriotism and loyal support for our country and constitutional government, the ability to relate history to modern life” and that the teacher require excellence at all times from students and enjoy a good rapport with them. The award includes a certificate, a monetary award and a challenge coin that states the DAR objectives of historic preservation, patriotism and education. Williams has taught at Berkmar High School for 16 years. He represented his school in the “American History” grant, which led to his leading workshops and presentations to other teachers of history. According to the Philadelphia Winn Chapter, Williams personally developed much of the material for several electives in the social studies field, including contemporary and controversial issues as well as ethnic studies, all in an effort to provide a meaningful experience for his students that will carry them into adulthood as lifelong learners. Williams' colleagues stress what an interactive and innovative approach he uses to engage his students, as well as his generosity to fellow teachers, sharing the content he has created for student treasure hunts and the means to understand events such as the American Revolution, the War of 1812, Westward Expansion as well as many more current and important events that make up our American history. Williams will now be considered as a candidate for the DAR State OTAH award, which will be announced in February. Grayson repeated as Gwinnett County ninth-grade girls basketball champions with a 49-46 win over Norcross in the tournament finals this past Saturday at Lanier. The Rams, who finished the season with a 13-3 record, defeated Lanier 50-39 in the semifinals. They are coached by Bill Batchelor. The fascinating thing about fashion is that it isn't always just because one person (or a group of "elites") said that it is cool to wear now, there are movements that shape style as we know it today. Growing up I saw a ton of girls sporting Chelsea haircuts and others rocking Betty bangs (I was the latter), as much as I admired these girls fashion and style I never really dove into the history as to why. So here is this weeks brief history lesson on the iconic haircuts and a rocksteady playlist to go with it! Find me on Instagram under Napalm Nanny and The Shack 1. Raymond Harper. Ska-Ta-Brain 2. "My grandma was ill, she was disabled she was old, but she was immensely valued and she did contribute and I think that we dismiss our older people, we dismiss people with disabilities." This week I talk to consultant in Palliative care Professor Mari Lloyd-Williams. It seems like Mari's whole life has been about care. From her earliest days where her and her sister played a key role in looking after her Grandmother she understood what it meant to be a carer, what you give and importantly what you receive. In her work as a doctor Mari has led with this ethos in mind and her work since qualifying has consistently challenged the existing structures. Having trained in Palliative care she remained interested in Psychiatry which she worked in for a year after qualifying. Combining the two areas of Medicine she has done extensive research into depression in people who have terminal illnesses. Mari has questioned not only how we treat the psychological impacts of terminal illness, but also whether the illness or loneliness from the illness are the biggest factors in depression in cancer patients. She has examined and researched how we think about volunteers and voluntary services, and their actual impact compared to paid services. Alongside being a consultant and teaching, Mari has set up a volunteer led community centre in her own village which provides a support network for people who have all sorts of illnesses and needs, not just terminal prognoses. Her clinical experience, her research and her community development work seem to hammer home the importance of an holistic care experience which looks at physical health, psychological health, and social health as one whole approach to medical care. She reminds us how important it is to ask people how they are doing, how much of a difference we can make by caring, and what a hugely positive impact that can have on our own lives.
