Episode 3 Sam -also called Samantha- Swords has been passionate about swordfighting since he was old enough to hold a stick. Strongly inspired by the stories of western warrior culture as a child, he has grown up to build his life around those same values, specialising in historical swordsmanship as well as being a professional craftsperson for the film and theatre industry, and immersing himself in creative projects on the side. Sam grew up in Australia and New Zealand, where he learned Western Martial Arts with Colin McKinstry through the New Zealand schools of historical swordsmanship. He was also able to learn the basics of mounted Medieval combat through the Upper Hutt Martial Arts Academy's cavalry reenactment group, the Order of the Boar. Sam went on to travel widely and train with a vast range of instructors across North America and South East Asia, especially fighters who specialised in some form of personal self defence. Samantha became well known as female swordfighting role model in 2013 after successfully winning the Harcourt Park longsword competition in New Zealand. This led to much global attention and enabled him to expose many people to Europe's historical martial arts legacy, as well as inspire many women (and people of other genders!) to start their journey with the sword. Sam proudly upholds the work and legacy that he was able to create as a female role model before his transition to male in 2018, although his focus is now on using his platform to inspiring people to be true to themselves and courageously live their passions, whatever those might be. He has also spoken on the relationship between martial arts, storytelling and heroism at the Hero Round Table in 2016. Sam enjoys most forms of historical combat but is especially excited about the study and practice of sword and buckler, as well as the potential of sport-based LARPs to enable field combat simulations that are not safely available to weapons practitioners in other ways. Sam is very active on social media through Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. He also has a clothing brand on Etsy and is currently building a community on Patreon. This week Dan and Brent cut up talking about swords and legends. Brent goes into depth about the swords of medieval ages and Dan discusses swords of legend.
Wrestling and Grappling, or as it can be called in a historical context Ringen (German sources) or Abrazare (Italian Sources), are an integral part of Historical combat. And there are many great books and articles that you can find to support this idea. So in that spirit, we spoke with Tim Hall of CKDF and Douglas Perritt of VAF all about Ringen. Tim Hall is with CKDF and a cofounder of the US Historical Ringen Association. Tim is also a certified personal fitness trainer. Tim is a great Ringen teacher, and competitor. You can find information about CKDF at https://www.capitalkdf.org/. And you can find more information about the US HRA at https://usringen.org/ or on their Facebook Page Douglas Perritt is with the Virginia Academy of Fencing, and organizer of the Midatlantic Ringen Symposium (MARS) and the Atlantic Ringen Exposition and Symposium (ARES). You can find more information about VAF at http://www.vafinc.com/ You can find last years events on Facebook MARS 2017 and ARES 2017, and I'm sure this years events will be announced soon. I have made many friends in HEMA, but today's episode features 3 friends that I made fairly early on in my HEMA Career. John Morahn, Greg Fasolino, and Nick Murro are three people that I respect and admire, and because of that, I wanted to interview them and share their stories with the rest of the HEMA community. John Morahn is an instructor with Western Swordsmanship Technique and Research (WSTR) out of Willimantic, CT. At IGX 2016 and 2017 he taught Mair's Scythe, a non traditional Western Martial Arts weapon. You can find more information about WSTR at https://sites.google.com/site/wstrinfo/. You can find John Morahn on Facebook and Twitter. Greg Fasolino is a member of the Long Island Historical Fencing Society on Long Island New York. He was among the first tournament fights I ever had at IGX 2015. I got to interview him about being a Wisdom League fighter at IGX 2016. You can find more information about Long Island Historical Fencing at http://www.longislandlongsword.com. Where they also have information about Long Island Point, part of the LHFL. Nick Murro is the instructor for MEMAG Crossing Fight School. Nick reached out to my club shortly after we were established and has always helped us to be as technical and good sword fighters as we could be. He was my paired technique partner at Longpoint 2017, and we got to sit down and talk about what it's like to be instructors for HEMA. In this episode, I interview Michaelangelo Reina (Angel) from the Omaha Kunst Des Fechtens HEMA fencing club. I discovered this group last year and have been training in longsword fencing for months now and absolutely love it. Angel is our club instructor and we have a chat about how he found himself in Omaha and how he managed to start this wonderful club. HEMA is an international organization and to learn more, just go to the OKDF website where you can see what our classes are about, watch video, and take a look at our schedule. NOTE: Some of the audio has a little clipping. Sorry for that. Also, I'm aware I pronounced "Fechtens" incorrectly in the opening audio. Whaddya do? Omaha Kunst Des Fechtens website OKDF on Facebook

This week's episode is a special guest Host episode with Matthew Stinson of Steelwind Fencing Academy from Jacksonville, FL. Matthew recently interviewed Aaron Shober of Sword Carolina. He was kind enough to share the interview with me to get it out to the rest of the HEMA Community. Aaron stumbled onto HEMA in 2010 and quickly became passionate about it. He practiced largely on his own for the next year, through books, DVDs, online resources, and events, before starting his own group in a local park. In September 2012, Aaron leased a Main Street space and opened up a dedicated HEMA school, one of only a few in the country. He is blessed to be a professional HEMA instructor, teaching and training as his full-time career. Aaron has taught classes at events such as IGX, SoCal, and his own Study in Steel. He has won medals in Longsword, Dussack, and Dagger and has helped coach several students to win or place in tournaments. Sword Carolina's YouTube channel is recognized as one of the best free resources to start to learn HEMA, and Sword Carolina Online is the first online school of HEMA available. Through Sword Carolina and Sword Carolina Online, Aaron now has students around the world.
