This episode features my conversation with drummer Alphonso Young Jr. Based out of Virginia, Alphonso is highly regarded for his versatility and musicality. Throughout his 50 year career, he has worked with numerous high profile jazz artists, but is best know for his work with the Eric Byrd Trio, of which he has been a member for over 20 years. Alphonso is a music teacher with the Loudoun County Public Schools and is also currently on faculty at Shenandoah University & Gettysburg College where he is a leading authority on drum set performance. In our conversation, we talk about how he adapts traditional methods to develop contemporary approaches when learning the fundamentals. We also talk about the importance of incorporating musical applications into each lesson and why it's essential to be open to learning as much from your students as they do from you. Wayde B. Byard served for more than twenty years as the public information officer for Loudoun County Public Schools. In a previous professional life as an award-winning journalist with the Winchester Star, he reported on crime, government (sometimes government-related crime), and sports.Seemingly overnight, parents across the country joined with activist groups and political figures at all levels to engage in heated—sometimes violent—fights over issues such as COVID mandates, retrofitting bathrooms to accommodate changing gender representation, and the teaching of American history through the lens of race. At the epicenter of this outrage machine was Loudoun County, a suburb of Washington, D.C., and the wealthiest county in the nation.Accused, along with the superintendent, by an ambitious, conservative governor and attorney general of covering up the crime, Byard—who most students knew from his popular announcements of snow days—was ultimately acquitted of a perjury charge but left with a troubling awareness that what happened to him could happen to anyone. In The Battle for Loudoun County, Byard sets the record straight and provides a rare window into the dangers of America's “bathroom wars” and the culture of outrage that, if left unchecked, will tear our country apart. http://waydebyard.com The Douglas Coleman Show VE (Video Edition) offers video promotional packages for authors. Due to the ongoing Canadian wildfires, unhealthy air quality continues to plague the region. WAMU environment reporter Jacob Fenston joins us to discuss how local officials responded to this crisis. What has the region learned for when this happens again? The D.C. Council passed emergency legislation this week capping rent increases to 6% at some apartment buildings. Chairman Phil Mendelson tells us how the bill came together and why this is needed now. And D.C. elections took center stage this week on Capital Hill with an hours-long hearing. It could result in a Republican-led bill changing how the city conducts its elections. We ask Chairman Mendelson about that. And what does he want in a new police chief? Plus, Loudoun County Public Schools has hired a new superintendent after the previous one's tenure ended in turmoil and controversy. Kojo and Tom sit down with incoming Superintendent Aaron Spence to talk about his approach to the job, gaining trust, and what residents can expect when he starts the position later this summer. Today's podcast guest is Brett Lesher. A remarkable human being that is solely focused on "enhancing the school year for employees" by encouraging them to SHOW UP and find hope together in relationships. He pursues people and leads with relationships without any hidden agendas. He is authentic and real. Brett meets individuals for "where they are" and "who they are". They don't need to be anyone but themselves for him to engage. When teachers put their heart and soul into their students, they may arrive early when it is dark and leave the building at night. STAFF Fellowship brings sunshine to their day and creates opportunities for teachers and employees to gather, support one another, and learn. Visit: https://stafff.org/ About Brett: "I am passionate about the culture of education, and all who are connected. After graduating from Loudoun Valley High School in Purcellville VA, I earned a bachelor's degree in communications from Liberty University and a master's in educational counseling from Lynchburg College. During my career as a counselor within Loudoun County Public Schools, I formed relationships with other staff members and launched faculty Bible studies with those eager to read the Gospel aloud and pray for the specific needs impacting their campuses. Over time, I recognized that many faculty around the county were eager to connect in similar ways, and as a result, I took a leap of faith to leave my full-time position to create STAFF Fellowship Inc."
