They discuss how to fill the gaps in youth and sport programs on Buffalo's West Side, and how to develop policies to increase accessibility to programs. Then, we go back to a conversation Jay Moran had with Dr. Henry Louis Taylor Jr, the director of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University at Buffalo. The two take a deep dive into two reports that Dr. Taylor previously worked on, “How we Change the Black East Side” and “The Harder We Run: The State of Buffalo in 1990 and the Present”, and how the community can benefit from the changes presented in them.

This episode of What's Next? finds Jay Moran joined by Dr. Henry Louis Taylor, Jr., the director of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University at Buffalo. Dr. Taylor joins Jay Moran to discuss what those changes could actually look like, and the community benefits of implementing them.

Welcome to the 6th Round Retro Post-Fight Show. This is the show that digs into the archives and gives you a comprehensive review of classic MMA events, that span as far back as UFC 1. Join Eddie Mercado & Victor Rodriguez as they delve into the world of the PFL (Professional Fighter's League) 2018 Championship Event this week, straight out of the archives of yesteryear. So let's take a trip back to Mon, Dec 31, 2018. The guys will explore the inaugural championship MMA event for the 2018 PFL season, entitled: ‘PFL 2018 Championship', aka: ‘PFL 11' – complete with results, analysis, and of course a few laughs. The event was broadcast live on New Year's Eve (Dec 31, 2018) as mentioned, LIVE from the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in NYC, NY. For those of you not in the know, the PFL is the first major MMA organization in which individual athletes compete in a regular season, post-season and championship, rather than on a year-round basis; putting on fights across six weight-divisions: featherweight, women's lightweight, lightweight, welterweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight. These events are held within a ten-sided MMA cage known as the ‘SmartCage', adhering to the unified rules of MMA, with the exception of prohibiting any elbow strikes. For more on their Fight Format and Point System, which determines the championship series outcomes, read here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional_Fighters_League#Fight_format_and_point_system The event was the eleventh and final event of the 2018 season. Each champion in the six weight classes was crowned and won a championship prize of $1 million each. For this debut season they opened the fighter pool at the beginning of the season with 72 fighters across their six weight-classes, competing in seven regular season events. The top eight in each division squared off in single elimination, bracket-style playoff fights. Overall, we had a total of seven bouts, with five of them ending in finishes, resulting in six new millionaires (prior to taxes, of course), and including one two-time Olympic Gold Medalist in her third MMA fight. The event had what TV Ratings averaging 204,000 viewers. If you would like to watch the event, it can be found in the PFL Archives OR via the Official PFL YouTube Channel under the names of the fighters of each bout. Join us to rediscover all the action and discuss as we go along! Let's check it out! Join Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor and Henry-Louis Taylor Jr. for a discussion of Keeanga's Pulitzer prize nominated book, Race for Profit. Newly available in Paperback, Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor's Race for Profit: How Banks and the Real Estate Industry Undermined Black Homeownership uncovers how exploitative real estate practices continued well after housing discrimination was banned. After redlining was formally prohibited the same racist structures and individual gatekeepers remained in place, and close relationships between regulators and the industry created incentives to ignore improprieties. Meanwhile, new policies meant to encourage low-income homeownership created new methods to exploit Black homeowners. The push to uplift Black homeownership descended into a goldmine for realtors and mortgage lenders, and a ready-made cudgel for the champions of deregulation to wield against government intervention of any kind. Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor and Henry-Louis Taylor, Jr. will discuss the story of this sea-change in housing policy, its dire impact on African Americans, how the urban core was transformed into a new frontier of cynical extraction, and that transformation's enduring legacy. Speakers: Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor writes and speaks on Black politics, social movements, and racial inequality in the United States. She is author of From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation and editor of How We Get Free: Black Feminism and the Combahee River Collective. Her third book, Race for Profit: How Banks and the Real Estate Industry Undermined Black Homeownership, published in 2019 by University of North Carolina Press, was a finalist for a National Book Award for nonfiction, and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for History. Henry-Louis Taylor, Jr. Ph.D. is a full professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, founding director of the U.B. Center for Urban Studies, and associate director of the U.B. Community Health Equity Research Institute at the University at Buffalo. He is an urban historian and urban planner that focuses on Black social movements and the interplay among city building, race, class, gender, and the underdevelopment of communities of color. Taylor is the recipient of numerous awards and has authored and edited five books and numerous articles, and technical reports on neighborhood planning and development. He has been cited in a host of national publications, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN, USA Today, The Atlantic, the Huffington Post, and Time Magazine. Taylor is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2018 Marilyn J. Gittell Activist Scholar Award by the Urban Affairs Association. In this episode, the second of a two-part discussion on the economics of urban segregation, Dr. Henry Louis Taylor introduces the concept of the "just city." He illustrates the contrasts between the just city and the underdeveloped urban communities that permeate the United States today. He also outlines the important role that social work must play in the development of just communities. Finally, using his research and experience in Cuba as a framework, Dr. Taylor describes how a society with very limited resources has been able to create highly developed communities to meet the needs of its inhabitants and, in doing so, place people over profits.
inSocialWork - The Podcast Series of the University at Buffalo School of Social Work
With over 80 percent of Americans living in urban areas, it is crucial for social workers to consider how the development of cities in the United States has played a role in creating and maintaining the social and economic segregation that is so deeply woven into the fabric of most cities today. In the first of two episodes, Dr. Henry Louis Taylor argues that there is an intentionality to how cities are built that produces the "underdeveloped" neighborhoods that we see, where marginalized populations find themselves forced to live. Further, institutions put into place to solve the problems facing these communities are failing in their mission and have shifted to simply easing the suffering and misery of the communities' inhabitants.

Dr. Henry Louis Taylor, Jr. is the Director for the Center for Urban Studies at the University of Buffalo and the Project Coordinator for the Perry Choice Neighborhood Initiative. His work has focused on the intersection of urban planning, regional development, and history in both the United States and Cuba. Dr. Taylor also studies the relationship between urban planning, race, and class. Our conversation focuses on inequality, racism, reconfiguring government institutions, and the physical structure of neighborhoods—several large, tangible issues that have been inadequately discussed or completely ignored by earlier interviewees. American exceptionalism is an early theme that leads into the mental frameworks that distort how we view the world. Dr. Taylor offers some concrete ideas about refocusing policy to foster stronger neighborhoods and ends musing on humanity's slow march towards the light. For both Micah and myself, listening to the final edit of Dr. Taylor's conversation was a good, if unsettling experience: we're almost half a year into production and this will be the first time race has been seriously discussed. As a result, this conversation has remarkably few explicit connections to the rest of the project because Dr. Taylor has had to build a new wing of the conversation from scratch. We find this embarrassing because it reflects the whiteness of the project back at us, from our choices of interviewees to the priorities of the interviewees themselves. Micah and I have been talking about race and our own perspectives a lot recently and we're going to dedicate the next interstitial episode to putting some of those thoughts down in audio.
