The Bank of Canada is holding its key lending rate at 2.75 per cent. This is the first pause after seven consecutive rate cuts, and Macklem cites Trump's tariffs for the decision. Is this the end of the bank's easing cycle, or truly a pause in light of global trade uncertainty? Joining the show today to unpack all this and more is renowned economist Don Drummond. Don is a former Chief Economist at TD Financial Group, and current Stauffer-Dunning Fellow and Distinguished Visiting Scholar in the School of Policy Studies at Queens University. Canada's political parties have now released their election platforms and put a price tag on their plans. Some of their costing is a little suspect, some uses creative accounting, it all fails  to go far enough to address the problem economists say political leaders should be grappling with: increasing the country's productivity.  This week, on “It's Political,” we look at productivity. What is it, and what should Canada be doing to increase it.  Then, we'll sit down and dissect the party's platforms: their math and what they are really doing to increase economic growth in the country. Does any party go far enough?  In this episode: Don Drummond, fellow-in-residence at the CD Howe Institute and former TD chief economist, and Tim Sargent, a senior fellow and director of the domestic policy program at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute. Hosted by Althia Raj.  This episode of “It's Political” was produced by Althia Raj and Kevin Sexton. Kevin also mixed this program. Our theme music is by Isaac Joel. Today we're joined by economist Don Drummond for a live reaction of the Bank of Canada's recent policy announcement.  Don breaks down the Bank of Canada's surprising decision to cut interest rates by 50 basis points, and what this means for the Canadian economy, housing market, and consumers. The rate cut is largely aimed at stimulating housing demand and supply, although Don points out that this move is unlikely to significantly impact housing prices. Instead, it serves as a boost to housing availability, potentially easing some pressure on a market in dire need of dense and affordable housing options. Addressing the broader economic impacts on the Canadian dollar and productivity, Don highlights a notable productivity gap between Canada and the U.S., which is tied to a weaker Loonie. This 20% disparity is a key challenge, as a less competitive currency can strain Canadian productivity growth relative to the U.S.   Recorded on October 24th, 2024.   At Fidelity, our mission is to build a better future for Canadian investors and help them stay ahead. Today on the pod, the kind of show I love. One of those single topic podcasts, where we drill down on a question, let the conversation flow and assume its own shape. I'll outline the question in a moment, but first our guest: My friend and heavy-hitting Canadian-economy-deep-thinker, Don Drummond.The Right Honourable Paul Martin called Don Drummond “One of the most principled and imaginative public servants with whom I have ever worked.” Don spent almost 23 years in senior positions in the federal Department of Finance, culminating in Associate Deputy Minister. Post government, he was Chief Economist for TD Bank, he is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Policy Studies at Queen's University, and he's an in-demand thinker, writer and commentator.So, the question we're exploring here is this: With the Fall Economic Statement as a backdrop, how can government address the political demand for affordability relief to Canadians? From programs like pharmacare and school food, to Poilievre “axing the tax”, to Doug Ford cutting every Ontarian a cheque for $200 … what is smart and what is dumb?Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. Don and host Pamela Ritchie discuss the Bank of Canada's decision to hold the key interest rate at 5%. Don says the key thing now is how the BoC revises inflation. He's concerned with the zero-level output gap we're coming to where excess demand was slightly greater than supply, but how is nearing a zero gap. He believes we need to create slack in our economy. Right now, the economy is sitting right on its supply capacity so there is currently no slack to rely on. The housing market can help with this, but right now the market is showing resilience. Monetary policy is not done. That is the key takeaway from the April 12th Bank of Canada press conference following their decision to hold its key interest rate at 4.5%. This is the second consecutive pause for the Bank of Canada, and if you're in the camp that's hoping for, or projecting a rate cut later this year, Governor Tiff Macklem swiftly squashed that idea saying, that it “doesn't look like the most likely scenario.” Joining us today to unpack what the latest Bank of Canada decision means for growth, housing, and the real economy is renowned economist Don Drummond. Don has held several senior roles at the Federal Department of Finance where he was responsible for economic analysis, fiscal and tax policies. He later served as Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at TD Bank, and is currently Fellow-in-Residence at the C.D. Howe Institute. Don speaks with host Pamela Ritchie today, and he is not surprised by the Bank of Canada's decision, since they're far from getting inflation down to 2%. However, he says “pleasantly surprised” they communicated that further hikes are a possibility in the future, and put an end to the speculation that cuts could be coming in 2023. We also hear today from Don that globalisation, including companies lowering costs by moving production overseas, allowed us to keep inflation low with strong growth in the past, but a lot of that has run its course for the moment. Don believes 1.5-1.7% is a reasonable sustainable long-term growth rate. Recorded on April 13, 2023. One of the most significant announcements by the Bank of Canada in their policy report is that they are confident in bringing inflation down to the target of 2% by 2024. We're joined today by renowned economist Don Drummond to unpack if this timeline is advantageous. Also, to see what this 25-basis point rate hike means for housing, markets, consumer spending and the real economy. Don has held several senior roles at the Federal Department of Finance, including Associate Deputy Minister, where he was responsible for economic analysis, fiscal and tax policies. He later served as Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at TD Bank and is currently Fellow-in-Residence at the C.D. Howe Institute. One key takeaway today that Don shares with host Pamela Ritchie are that inflation has peaked and should continue dropping under 6% year-over-year as we get into this spring. Stay tuned for all of this and more. Recorded on January 26, 2023. Ska forever changed the course of music. Not only in Jamaica, but all over the world. Many talented people were involved with its development in the late 50s/60s. But a lot of credit is owed to The Skatalites for perfecting and elevating the genre. Within the Skatalites camp, trombonist Don Drummond was incredibly important and influential. He wrote and/or arranged a majority of their songs. He also brought a somber vibe to the otherwise upbeat genre of music, often writing songs in minor keys. And he also forever linked the trombone with ska, something that remains true to this day, even as the genre has mutated in surprising ways.Today we look at the life and times of Don Drummond. On one hand, he was one of the greatest musical geniuses to ever walk the earth. His impact is immeasurable. On the other hand, he was a troubled and tragic figure, riddled with mental illness. He murdered his girlfriend Anita "Margarita" Mahfood in 1965 and then died a few years later while imprisoned at Bellevue Asylum. We bring on a panel of guests to tell the story of Don's life and to understand the impact that he had. Our panel includes Heather Augustyn, author of Don Drummond: The Genius and Tragedy of the World's Greatest Trombonist, Adam Reeves, who is currently working on a comic book adaptation of Heather's book. It will be called Trombone Man: Ska's Fallen Genius. And lastly, Ken Stewart, who's been the keyboardist/manager for The Skatalites since the late 80s. Check out Hey Coffee at heycoffeeco.com and get fresh, sustainably sourced coffee mailed to your door. Mr. Drummond spent almost 23 years in progressively more senior positions in the federal Department, culminating in Associate Deputy Minister of Finance. Paul Martin called him “one of the most principled and imaginative public servants with whom I have ever worked.” Subsequent to his time in government, he was Chief Economist for the TD Bank. A native of Kingston, Malcolm received formal musical training and broke into the business playing trombone with the legendary #Don Drummond in a jazz group in the late '50s. In #1962, he was tapped to head the ten-piece house orchestra of the newly established state radio organization the Jamaican Broadcasting Corporation and wrote some of the first formal #ska arrangements as a result. He also composed uncredited music for the soundtrack of the first James #Bond film, #Dr. No (which was partly filmed in #Jamaica), and formed his own group, the Afro-Jamaican Rhythms, whose music melded #ska, #African, Latin, and #jazz rhythms. They scored hits in Jamaica with "Rukumbine" (1963) and, especially, "#Bonanza Ska" (1964, a reworking of #TV's "Bonanza" theme song); they also recorded three albums, the most prominent of which was Ska Mania. During the '60s, Malcolm also traveled to New York and recorded three albums that blended a Caribbean sensibility with American music. The Roulette release Don't Walk, #Dance! (around 1964) was the first of these, boasting a jazzy, Latin-flavored sound;

On Saturday, August 3rd, 2013 Deadly Dragon Sound and Dub Stuy Records present... ROOTS OF SOUND SYSTEM featuring TONY SCREW (Downbeat the Ruler), JAH WISE (Tippa Tone Hi-Fi), TOMMY FAR EAST (Solid Rock Japan) and Deadly Dragon Sound. Every year we throw a BIG ASS party in honor of Jamaican Independence and this year we are coming, once again, with a really killer event celebrating the foundation styles of Soundsystem culture: Ska, Rocksteady and Early Reggae. To this end we joined up with Dub Stuy records to present some of the greatest collectors and selectors of Early Jamaican music digging deep into their vaults, playing some of their most vital and rare records through the “Tower of Sound”, Dub-Stuy’s custom-built hi-fidelity sound system - making The Roots of Sound System perhaps the first-ever proper Revive Dance to be held in New York City. First up we haveTony Screw - DownBeat the Ruler. Since the early 70s DownBeat has been entertaining and educating crowds from Brooklyn to Berlin with his inimitable blend of stage presence, exclusive dubplates and a second sense for keeping a dance floor packed. Downbeat the Ruler Sound has introduced generations of reggae fans to the sounds of Studio One, the blueprint of Jamaican music. Next up, we are proud to present, for the first time in NYC, TOMMY FAR EAST (SOLID ROCK JAPAN): Hailing from Tokyo, Japan and the youngest selector on the bill, Tommy Far East has become known throughout the world for both his tremendous archive of original Ska and Rocksteady vinyl and the absolute joy he has in sharing it with audiences throughout the world. And finally a man who has taught we here at Deadly Dragon so much about music, about tunes, about that weird alternate cut to that Studio One selection that you can never remember the name of -- JAH WISE of TIPPATONE SOUND. JAH WISE has been involved in Jamaican music ever since Ska was first invented. Growing up in West Kingston, Jamaica with his brother, singer Cornell Campbell, he has been continually playing with sound systems since 1967. As the top selector for Tippatone, Jah Wise has selected for every legendary deejay from Big Youth to Dr. Alimantado and beyond. And of course, we Deadly Dragon folks will be flinging down a few tunes to keep things proper! ROOTS OF SOUNDSYSTEM at THE PAPER BOX A Jamaican Independence Day Celebration Saturday | August 3rd, 2013 | 9pm to 3am @ The Paper Box 17 Meadow Street, Williamsburg $15 advance / $20 door Ticketing: http://www.ticketfly.com/event/321609-dub-stuy-records-deadly-brooklyn/ Transportation: L Train to Grand https://www.facebook.com/events/381085045336403/ And in honor of this Event we give to you a crucial mix of Ska and Rock Steady that we made back in 2007. 1.
