Send us a textScott Robohn's journey from corporate network engineer to successful independent consultant offers a roadmap for anyone considering the entrepreneurial path in tech. After 35 years in the networking industry, Scott found himself ready to build something of his own—not necessarily a product, but an enterprise he could be fully responsible for.The transition wasn't without careful consideration. Scott spent a full year planning his exit, having extensive conversations with his wife and financial advisor to ensure he had sufficient runway (approximately three years) if things didn't go as planned. This preparation phase wasn't just about the numbers; it was about creating psychological safety and family buy-in for what would be a significant life change. What stands out most in Scott's experience is how he navigated the unexpected challenges of independence. On just his second day of self-employment, he had the jarring realization that he was no longer part of a team—something that had been constant throughout his career. This led him to intentionally create new communities through co-founding the Network Automation Forum and engaging with local networking user groups, demonstrating that entrepreneurship doesn't have to mean isolation.Finding clients represents perhaps the biggest practical hurdle for new consultants. Scott shares how his initial work came through his existing network, with LinkedIn playing a surprisingly crucial role in business development. As his practice evolved, he discovered an unexpected passion for certain specialty areas, including his Total Network Operations approach, which examines how network operations teams need to reorganize for modern networks and tooling. For those contemplating their own leap, Scott offers candid advice about the realities of American entrepreneurship—including the significant hurdle of healthcare costs—while providing encouragement that with proper planning, the transition can lead to greater fulfillment. As his wife observed at his one-year anniversary: "I've seen you work this hard before, but always accompanied with stress. Now I see you working this hard and I don't see the stress."Ready to explore entrepreneurship in tech? Join Scott at the Network Automation Forum events in Prague (May 2025) or in the US (November 2025), and discover how you might thrive on your own terms.Connect with our guest:https://packetpushers.net/podcast/total-network-operations/https://networkautomationPurchase Chris and Tim's new book on AWS Cloud Networking: https://www.amazon.com/Certified-Advanced-Networking-Certification-certification/dp/1835080839/ Check out the Fortnightly Cloud Networking Newshttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1fkBWCGwXDUX9OfZ9_MvSVup8tJJzJeqrauaE6VPT2b0/Visit our website and subscribe: https://www.cables2clouds.com/Follow us on BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/cables2clouds.comFollow us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@cables2clouds/Follow us on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@cables2cloudsMerch Store: https://store.cables2clouds.com/Join the Discord Study group: https://artofneteng.com/iaatj

Kia ora,Welcome to Friday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news all eyes are on the US non-farm payrolls report due out tomorrow, and market activity is hesitant in advance of that.US jobless claims came in at +210,000 last week, a good decrease from the prior week. But it was not as large a drop as the seasonality suggests it should have been, so it counts as a 'rise' on the headline basis. Continuing claims were 1.66 mln and that fall was more than the seasonal effects expected. There are still very few announced job cuts in this huge labour market. So that will probably mean the US November non-farm payrolls report will be a positive one when it is released tomorrow morning. Markets currently expect +200,000 more jobs filled. The US Fed's November Beige Book describes a moderately expanding overall economy.US exports came in at US$266 bln in October, about the 2024 monthly average even though they slipped from the prior month. But they were +1.9% higher than the same month a year ago, in a rising trend that started in June 2023. Imports slipped in October too from the prior month, but these also stayed at about the 2024 monthly average. The US trade deficit in both goods and services reduced in October and runs at under -3% of GDP, a level easily absorbed in such a large country, especially one whose currency is the standard for international trade.Canadian exports and imports both rose in October, and their trade deficit - although on a rising trend - has an even smaller impact on their economy. In Europe, although it slipped in October from September, the volume of EU retail trade was up +2.1% from the same month a year ago. This is perhaps a surprising show of resilience for an economy that is being widely panned as struggling. On the global logistics front, perhaps we should note the Global Supply Chain Pressure Index that the NY Fed monitors. In November, it eased slightly. After the sharp pandemic pressures it eased noticeable in April 2023 and has seen no return since then, despite the ups and downs of things like the major canal stresses. The global logistics network has been remarkably resilient, the pandemic excepted. And last week, global container freight rates rose +6% from the prior week to be +150% higher than pre-pandemic levels still. There were sharp rises in the China-to-Europe trade, more than enough to offset sharp fall in the Chine-to-USWC trade. Going the other way there was a very sharp drop in bulk cargo rates, down -22% from the prior week to their lowest since September 2023 and actually back to levels first reached in 1987.The UST 10yr yield is now at just on 4.18%, down -2 bps from yesterday. The price of gold will start today at US$2637/oz and down -US$15 from this time yesterday.Oil prices are -US$1 lower at US$69.50/bbl in the US while the international Brent price is now just under US$72.50/bbl. These low prices forced OPEC to delay its planned output hike in January. The Kiwi dollar starts today at 58.7 USc and unchanged from this time yesterday. Against the Aussie we up +10 bps at 91.2 AUc. Against the euro we have dipped -10 bps to 55.6 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at just on 68.3, and again unchanged from yesterday. The bitcoin price starts today at US$100,825 and up +6.0% from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been very high at +/- 4.7%. At one point it reached US$103,000, at another back under $100,000.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. And we will do this again on Monday.

Today's show focuses on upcoming November election. The status in the swing states is reviewed. How the candidates stand on the two key issues in the election per polls: Economy and Decline of Democracy in USA. Trump v. Harris proposals on issues appealing to working class voters in the key 3 northern swing states: taxes on tips, overtime pay, social security income, SALT, interest tax deductions on auto loans. The real condition of inflation since 2019. Conflicting stats on real wages and take home pay. The Labor Dept latest jobs report. The silent issue neither candidate is talking about: runaway deficits and national debt and nearly $1 trillion/yr interest payments on the debt now. Why whoever wins in November will propose severe Austerity programs. How the BRICS expansion and new financial world system represents an existential threat to US global economic hegemony and empire and how it will blowback on US economy. Show concludes with discussion how both parties are engaged in destruction of US democracy.

With the surprising withdrawal of Joe Biden from the race and the recent assassination attempt on Donald Trump, the landscape for the US November presidential elections has shifted dramatically. As the Republican nominee is now confirmed, what strategies might the Democratic Party employ to counter a resurgent Trump campaign? We explore these developments with Mark J. Rozell of George Mason University.
Stock market sentiments have been somewhat mixed ahead of the release of May PCE data, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge. Why are investors being cautious and what's the best portfolio strategy ahead of US November elections? We discuss these trends with Tim Mulholland of TJM Limited.Image Credit: Shutterstock.com

Mario Duarte—co-founder and CEO of DH Global Strategy, a global consulting and lobbying firm—predicts 2024 will be a hectic year worldwide for geopolitics. He believes the Democratic Party is promoting the US border crisis: "the Western Hemisphere appears to be being weaponized to influence the US November elections in the United States." For Duarte, many illegal migrants cross the US border to get new economic opportunities, but others work together with narcos and terrorists. He adds that developed countries have contributed to the weakening of Third-World countries' economies by promoting socialist politicians. Duarte explains why he coined the term Latinists. It refers to the unelected bureaucrats who want to intervene in the decision-making of Third-World countries. He claims these bureaucrats are arrogant because they think they know more than locals and what is best for their nations. Show notes:
US November consumer credit jumped higher. Middle income consumers may borrow while still having savings to smooth consumption. Lower income consumers are more likely to borrow involuntarily (buying essentials on credit card, without having enough money to pay the bill at the end of the month). The increased dependence on credit supports consumer spending for now, but is a reminder that there are limits to spending—a soft economic landing is still an economic landing.
US November consumer price inflation is expected to be stable. Economists must act as second-hand car salespeople; used car prices are a volatile (probably declining) component. Record numbers of people were travelling for fun over Thanksgiving (assuming seeing family constitutes fun), which may have raised leisure travel prices. The fantasy of owners' equivalent rent adds a lot to consumer prices but not to the cost of living.
Growing up in the 1970s and 80s, one assumed that Paul McCartney was always universally loved because of his work in The Beatles, his 70s solo work and that with Wings, and his positive peace & love attitude. However, in 1973 Paul found himself in a bit of turmoil. Though he'd enjoyed some success as a solo artist, particularly in the US, Paul was being criticized for the adult contemporary nature of his music vs. the output of the other Beatles and the harder rocking music of the day. He was skewered in the British press after he released Leave Ireland to the Irish on the heels of Bloody Sunday in 1972 and had lost several members of Wings over being treated as hired hands and the presence of Linda in the band despite her lack of musical ability. However, Paul forged ahead with Linda and Denny Laine to create Band on the Run, released on December 5, 1973 in the US (November 30, 1973 in the UK). The title track is one of redemption and freedom inspired by George Harrison during their ongoing Apple Corps meetings and negotiations. Jet is an upbeat song that climbed the charts around the world despite it being about his dog and getting to know Linda's father. Songs like Bluebird, Mrs. Vanderbilt, Let Me Roll It and Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five became AM and classic rock radio staples in the US where the album not only went to #1 but sold more than 3 million copies. As the album that gave Paul back his credibility with the critics and allowed Paul and Wings to continue through the end of the 70s turns 50, we give it our classic track by track treatment. The United States Studies Centre hosted a special US midterms event featuring The New York Times' Jane Coaston, ABC's Political commentator Annabel Crabb, and USSC's CEO Dr Michael Green. The presumption of a red wave in the US November midterms elections has been tempered by setbacks on the Republican agenda and significant legislative victories for Democrats. But the winner of the US House and Senate elections impacts far more than US domestic politics. The US posture toward China, defence funding, trade agreements and more all hinge on the makeup of Congress. For Australia, the stakes have never been higher in a US midterms election. What US issues are the biggest concern for US and Australian voters? What is the state of play going into the midterms? What do the midterms tell us about what to expect in the 2024 US presidential election? To explore these topics, USSC commissioned polling on public opinion in the United States and Australia. This special event provided an opportunity to discuss the key findings from US Midterms 2022 with Jane Coaston, Annabel Crabb and Michael Green.
M2s Matt, Caroline, and Maddie, and PA2 Ariele, discuss what they're thinking about with respect to healthcare issues in the US November 2022 mid-term elections. Mental health, lowering costs, the primary and knock-on effects of abortion bans, and more, are all issues that healthcare voters may be considering. Short Coats may not all agree on these issues. Instead, what's important is simply to vote.
This is a party absolutely determined to maintain a monopoly of power and absolutely determined to crush any attempt by any group to suggest that there ought to be anything like separation of powers. No labor unions. No civil society. No freedom of press. No judicial independence. The mere suggestion of it seems to be so offensive that people end up in jail and that's a constant theme that runs throughout this entire period.Frank DikötterBecome a Patron!Make a one-time Donation to Democracy Paradox.Order China After Mao: The Rise of a Superpower by Frank Dikötter (Available in the UK now. He Died for Us – November 5, 2022 by Percy Harrold
Well, Bank of England has tightened, putting up s/t rates by 15bps to 25bps. They expect inflation to dissipate over time, as supply disruption eased, energy prices stopped rising and global demand rebalanced from goods to services. We'll see. But let's remember, in its November meeting, BOE expected CPI to rise to 'around 5%' by spring 2022. It got there, we now know, in November itself. The UK's inflation isn't quite as bad as the US - November's 5.1% yoy in the UK vs the US 6.8% - but the likely 12m trajectory looks worse, and the distance between where 10yr rates are now, and where inflation is likely to be in 12m time is worse. Looking at the UK's likely inflation pattern over the coming 12m: if the deflection against trend we've sen in the last 6m is maintained, we'll see inflation rising to around 6% by March, and staying there or thereabouts until September. Meanwhile, UK 10yr yields are just 0.8% - so there's a gap of about 5.4 percentage points between 3Q22 CPI and bond yields. In the US that gap is 4.3pts, and in the Eurozone 4.8points. So UK bond markets are out there on their own. The BOE needs to keep buying those bonds! But maybe things won't be that bad: after all, in yoy terms, Brent oil peaked in October up 101% yoy, since when it's fallen about 12%, and the yoy has fallen to 47%. The wider CRB index also peaked in October up 58.3% yoy, since when it is down 5.6% and the yoy has come down to 37%, and even natural gas prices are down 29% from their October peak. The problem is, even if UK inflation resumes its normal historic patterns, we'll see inflation nearer 5% than 4% for the next nine months; even if we go 1SD below trend, it' ll still be August before we dip back below 4%. In the meantime, BOE has put up rates by 15bps to 25bps. A lot will have to go right, a lot will have to prove 'transient' for that to be the end of tightening.
