How to Find Your Daily Inspiration with Light Watkins When you feel stuck, how do you move forward? Where do you find the inner strength to be open and present to moments of daily inspiration ? Most of the time, the answer already lies within yourself. Once you stop worrying about the future or going over the past, you become immersed in the present and discover that inspiration is everywhere. In this episode, we have Light Watkins, the author of Knowing Where To Look: 108 Daily Doses of Inspiration. He teaches us how to find our daily inspiration in the most mundane of experiences. When we take that first step into the unknown, creativity becomes a little bit easier to unlock. Light encourages us to embrace discomfort and build habits until they become reflex.  If you want to learn how to conquer your inner doubts and find that lightbulb moment, this episode is for you. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Learn how to stay present and pay attention to avoid missing your moment of daily inspiration. It was then that he realized that what's insignificant to him can be a meaningful memory to another. Everyone has a story. When you peel back the layers and go beyond the surface, you can find a deeper and beautiful meaning. To prepare for his book, Light practiced writing short stories every day. But when he runs out of topics, he meditates, and inspiration strikes. It's impossible to run out of creativity because creativity generates further creativity. The simple act of showing up can give you that lightbulb moment. Getting Unstuck Through Daily Inspiration A powerful way to get inspired is to practice gratitude. Identify five to ten things that you're grateful for at the moment. If you can't find anything you're thankful for, move your body and be aware of the physical sensations. Try to embed this habit. When you stay grounded in the present instead of regretting your past or worrying about the future, you become more receptive to the richness of the human experience. Staying grounded in the present allows you to discover the world is screaming to be noticed by you. Building the Habit It's essential to cultivate the habit of showing up for yourself. The real challenge starts when other obligations get in the way, and it's no longer convenient to stick to your original plan. Through pure repetition, Light learned how to build habits. Start now, and even finding daily inspiration will become second nature to you in no time. In the face of setbacks, Light pressed on and ended up producing your own masterpiece. Being nervous and afraid are prerequisites for inspiration. Don't run away, but lean into that. Seeing Through Social media is a highlight reel of other people's carefully curated lives. It's not real. In modeling, he discovered that stylists go to great lengths to make the clothes look tailored to the person in the catalog. There's no point in comparing ourselves to someone else's highlight reel. It prevents us from living in the present moment and appreciating the good things we have. The Right Balance Social media platforms like Instagram embody society's narcissistic tendencies. The first step to cultivate a healthier relationship with social media is to be fully honest with yourself. Identify what part of you is attracted to that platform and what you can do about it. It may not be possible to quit social media completely, but you can learn to pick your poison and choose your battles. Making Art We have a choice to pit ourselves endlessly against other people on social media or focus our energies on making art. Hip-hop culture is an example of people converting difficult life experiences into beautiful and artistic expressions. If you have something in your life to complain about, try and ask yourself, "What's beautiful about this experience, and how can I express it?" If we are willing to take a moment to reflect, it becomes easier to identify the feeling that we're called to express within our lived experience. Our Inner Child We want to grow up into someone that is the full expression of ourselves. But we usually lose our way and suppress that part of ourselves when we grow up. In Light's podcast, he asks guests their favorite childhood activity and discovers that their calling as an adult is linked to that formative experience. When we lose our early purpose, it is our job as adults to peel back the layers and find our true selves. The confluence of areas in your life where you're not honest with yourself and where you are authentic is where you find your true purpose. Freedom in Choice-lessness The scariest part is just before you start. But once you take that first step, the fear gives way to strategy and logistics. There's freedom in lack of choice. When we have too many options, we tend to get paralyzed. But when you're pushed into a corner and only have one choice, you focus your energy and resources on that. Whatever your version of “the opposite” is, lean into that. Explore what makes you uncomfortable or fearful. Only then will you find yourself. Taking a leap of faith is not a single act but a lifestyle. Tune in to the full episode to discover how Light feels radically loved! 5 Powerful Quotes from this Episode [12:28] “When you're not in the present, you're going to miss so much richness, so much of the sentience of just everything all around you all the time that is transmitting messages and communicating with you and really just screaming to be noticed by you.” [16:21] “The real commitment doesn't even start until the original plan goes out the window. And that's when you really start to see what you're made of.” [20:39] “I think nervousness and being afraid, in a good way, is one of the prerequisites for inspiration. So don't talk yourself out of it because you're nervous. Lean into that.” [34:09] “Whatever is going to expose how you're lying to yourself, the areas of your life where you're not being honest with yourself, and where you can be more authentic. The confluence of those two areas is where you're going to find your purpose.” [39:55] “Through exploring those areas that make you uncomfortable, you'll find comfort and discomfort and then you'll find that fear that tends to stop most of us most of the time, it won't be an issue for you anymore. And you'll find yourself.” About Light Light Watkins is an accomplished meditation teacher and bestselling author of Knowing Where to Look. How to Tap into Your Gut Intuition and Tune Out Society’s Noise and Expectations | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market and BiOptimizers. We’re all on our own paths of learning which inner voice to follow. There’s usually the one urging us to take the easy option, but there’s also the (often quieter) inner voice nudging us to stretch ourselves and take on a challenge. Have you ever felt a little scared but also excited about a new endeavor? That inner guide is trying to help you grow. If there was something you could do everyday to boost your focus and productivity, feel energized, reduce stress, sleep better, maintain a positive outlook, and support whole-body health, wouldn’t you do it?In this mini-episode, Dhru speaks with Megan Monahan, Emily Fletcher, and Light Watkins about the common myths around meditation, the science of meditation and how it impacts the brain, and how to bring meditation into your life in a practical and tangible way. Megan Monahan is a meditation teacher and author and is passionate about making meditation accessible and relatable. Turn on the news, scroll through your social feed, talk to your friend—it’s hard out there. It’s almost as if the universe wants you to give up on the ability to feel happiness. But before you do, listen up! Light Watkins, former Gap model turned meditation guru, shares the light on tapping into your inner bliss and how to even generate it from within. Light first began attending yoga classes and meditation circles in between castings in New York City. Since ‘98 Light has been active in the wellness space, first as a practitioner, later as an apprentice to his Vedic meditation teacher, and finally (in 2007) as a meditation teacher himself. He now travels the world giving talks on happiness, mindfulness, inspiration, and meditation and his most recent book, Bliss More, How To Succeed In Meditation Without Really Trying was just released this year. Light writes articles on meditation and happiness, leads sold-out meditation trainings and retreats, and produces The Shine, a global pop up inspiration variety show with a mission to inspire. Be happy out there. Be happy in there, too. Start now! Key Takeaways: Meditation compass. There’s a version of inner bliss that’s solid, rich, and resilient to anything that tries to defy it. But how do you achieve it when it’s so easy to fall into the trap of instant and fleeting gratification? HERE’S the secret…[11:50]. Meditation 101. You heard there’s something to it, you weren’t sure what to expect, so you tried it but you were still a bit unsure of its full potential—sound familiar to your first meditation experience? Before you give it another shot, try THIS simple approach…[14:29]. Meditation demystified. There’s much out there claiming what meditation is and isn’t: “it’s boring,” “you’re mind has to be completely cleared for it to work,” “it’s like falling asleep,” etc. The misconceptions you want to AVOID before your next mindful moment…[21:05]. Meditation enlightenment. Stress, distraction, physical issues—with so many things clouding our minds, bliss can be hard to find. And although Light even admits that meditation doesn’t provide a perfect life, THIS is what you should look for on your hunt for inner bliss…[27:05]. Tune in and turn the volume up for a dose of inspiration and life lessons. You're never more than One Idea Away from a whole, new reality.

My guest today is Light Watkins. Light is a former GAP fashion model. He started attending yoga classes and meditation circles back when he was doing casting calls in New York City. Since 1998, Light has been active in the wellness space, first, as a practitioner and then he's gone on quite a journey with meditation. This journey led to a trip to Northern India, to a little hamlet nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas to become a master in meditation. After about three months there and over thousands of hours of meditation, he completed his training. He now travels the world giving talks on happiness, mindfulness, inspiration, and meditation. He teaches meditation to A-list actors, big name entrepreneurs and a whole lot of regular people because he does it in a unique way. He just got a real practical approach. He introduces all of that in his most recent book called "Bliss More: How to Succeed in Meditation Without Really Trying" which was released earlier this year. Listen To The Podcast: RESOURCES: Bliss More Book: https://amzn.to/2kNy6bc INTERVIEW: Light, welcome to DREAM THINK DO. Thanks, man. I'm so excited to be here. Our mutual friend, Antonio Neves introduced us. Antonio started talking about your book Bliss More as you were launching it. I started to dig into it a little bit, and I was like, "Gosh, meditation can be such a heady thing." I loved how you were very transparent in your story. You didn't try to set yourself up as some mountain top guru; you're a regular guy who's had mountain top experiences through meditation, so I love that. It's a real practical approach. It wasn't that you sat down and immediately had just these incredible experiences. Tell us a little bit about how your journey with meditation got started. Yes, sure. I got introduced to meditation through taking yoga classes. Everybody always talked about meditation. I was reading a bunch of the new age spiritual books that everyone's familiar with, the Eckhart Tolle book, Power of Now, The Seat of the Soul, The Celestine Prophecy, Conversations with God. There were always mentions of meditation or meditative states, and you figure, if something is hanging around for thousands of years, there's got to be something to it. Yeah, right. If it's been hanging out this long, then maybe, maybe I should dig into it just a little bit. My curiosity got the best of me, and I started going to these French meditation circles in New York City. This is back in the '90s, so I didn't know anyone else who was interested in this which kind of made it more interesting to me. You always want to feel like you're in on something that no one else has heard about yet so then you can then introduce everyone else to it. In those early days, it always frustrated me and fascinated me at the same time that I didn't feel like I was having the experience, the advertised experience. I wasn't going to nirvana. I wasn't having the bliss experience. You don't know what you don't know, so I didn't know that there were different approaches to meditation. I didn't know that there were monastic techniques and there were householder approaches. I was mainly doing monastic approaches, and that's one of the reasons why I was having such difficult experiences. After three years of knocking my head against the wall, I stumbled upon a teacher who showed me some of the householder, meaning regular people, approaches to meditation where you sit on a couch, or you sit in a comfortable chair, and you meditate there. That's where I finally found the bliss that had been eluding me for a very long time. Then everything made sense. It started to click. Well, I love that. A lot of people think of meditation, and they think of the discipline, the monk who deprives themselves of all things to have this experience in meditation. How would you say the householder approach is different?

I didn’t start meditating to be cool – I started meditating to save my life. By 26 years old I loathed my very existence, and was trapped in a downward spiral of self-destruction. I’ve tried numerous methods of finding peace of mind using various practices of meditation, but Vedic meditation has been my Holy Grail. I also know that meditation is one of the things you all are hungry to learn more about, so I sat down with Light Watkins, an author and Vedic teacher who wants to empower the everyman to meditate. To help, Light wrote one of the best books I’ve ever read on the topic: Bliss More: How to Succeed in Meditation Without Really Trying. You can think of Bliss More as the meditation version of the The 4-Hour Workweek: lean, effective, and at home on a bio hacker’s bookshelf near you. Some meditation practices and techniques are very specific and rigid, both physically and mentally. This is what a lot of people think of when they hear the word “meditation,” and in all honesty, those practices can be a struggle for the amateur who sincerely wants to make a daily practice out of meditation. If you want to sit with your legs crossed on the floor for an hour, that’s fine! But that’s NOT necessary to achieve the best or most efficient results from meditation – you can’t focus your way to bliss. Vedic meditation, on the other hand, is about reshaping the relationship with the mind to effortlessly experience fully-awake restful consciousness and its many physiological benefits. “The mind is not the enemy. The mind is not the obstacle. The mind is actually your ally. The mind is noble.” –Luke   Topics Discussed In This Episode: Urban escape room & evasion course How to succeed in meditation (without really trying) Changing the conversation around meditation Why Light’s book is accessible for the everyman & experienced practitioners Reframing writing as a practice Dealing with criticism (& laughing at negative reviews on Yelp) How Light (a young man from Alabama) first got into meditation in the 90s Experiencing Light’s first “meditation orgasm” Thom Knoles, a maharishi (or pre-eminent master-teacher) of Vedic Meditation Why meditation is only effective when it’s a daily practice Becoming a good teacher (“You don’t have to beat Michael Jordan to coach him to a championship.”) Training in India Listening to our intuitive voice Your energetic economy Having many choices VS knowing the right choice (for you) The early, rocky stages of a meditation practice Stress relief & meditation Fun fact: we all have the same number of thoughts Appreciating beauty Calming the fight or flight reaction Why Light keeps his services accessible and affordable How Light prays   More about this episode. So I would say that mindfulness allows me to put a separation between my emotions. So we're very emotional beings and sometimes we let emotions kind of override us and we think, oh, I'm feeling this way so this is all of my reality right now. I think what mindfulness really has this amazing capacity to do is to bring awareness to it, but then put a separation into it. So then you can look at it non-judgmentally and really say, hey, I'm feeling this way, you know, what does that mean or, hey, I'm feeling this way. And just let it, let it be. Thoughts on Breathing So I've been trying to meditate, I would say a good three years now and I'm excited to get to your book recommendations because I have a great book for you that I want you to actually read. And then I'd actually like to hear what you have to say about it after you read it. But I'm. So whenever you hear of mindfulness or meditation, the first thing that any kind of teacher has said is go to your breath. So I, in my personal experience, have found this to be incredibly easy. It refocuses you, it's always accessible and it just automatically calms me. One of the things that I do with breathing is I like to count to 10 or 20. When you breathe in, it's one breathe out. It's two. And so I normally go to either 10 or 20 and then restart it and I try to do that for a good five to 10 minutes.
