The IndyCar season is picking up steam as the series moves from Barber into the Month of May. Conor Daly and the Juncos Hollinger team brought home a 19th place finish in yet another event that ran green in its entirety. Ian Hallas has had quite a journey on the road to his position as Principal Bass of the Lyric Opera Orchestra. We first spoke for the podcast in early 2016 after winning a section bass position, and he won three additional auditions for Lyric for title chairs. We talk about what it’s like auditioning for another job in your same orchestra, how his audition process has evolved since our conversation four years ago, what he learned along the journey, and much more! About Ian: Ian Hallas began his tenure as Principal Bass of the Lyric Opera Orchestra in 2019 after joining the section in 2016. He holds a bachelor’s degree with Distinction in Research and Creativity from Rice University where he studied with Paul Ellison as well as a master’s degree from the University of Southern California under David Moore. He has also been heavily influenced by Chris Hanulik and Todd Seeber and has worked extensively with master luthier Mike Shank. In addition to the Lyric Opera, Ian has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit, Atlanta and Milwaukee Symphonies and the Grant Park Orchestra. Ian was an award-winning fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center. He was also an invited guest chamber musician at Spoleto Festival USA where he performed with the St. Lawrence quartet and members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Additionally, he has attended the Aspen Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, and Domaine Forget Summer Music Academy. He serves on faculty at Northwestern's Bienen School of Music and maintains a private studio on the north shore of Chicago. He also teaches at the National Music Festival and was a teaching assistant at the Double Bass Workshop at BUTI. In his spare time, Ian enjoys running, laughing and spending time with his wife, playing with his two Siberian Forest cats and expanding his bourbon collection. Things are hopping and popping for Mike Shank and his Meyer Shank Racing Team these days. The Acura NSX portion seems headed toward another season title is it competes this week and at Mid-Ohio sports car course. The IndyCar team will run a double-header next weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. And it was announced this week that MSR will be one of two teams running the new Acura prototype in the IMSA series next year, and perhaps at Le Mans in the future plus the team is about to break ground on a new 50 thousand square foot headquarters. Based on many reasons, Shank thinks his Pataskala, Ohio-based squad has a shot at victory -- perhaps two victories -- on the demanding, tight road course. The Meyer Shank Racing entry for the 104th Indianapolis 500 wasn't up to the speed expected by driver Jack Harvey and team owner Mike Shank on Saturday -- a couple mph short is huge in the modern game. July 4th is going to be a hot one for Meyer Shank Racing, no matter what the temperature is. The IndyCar side will be racing on the road course at Indianapolis, and the IMSA side will be racing on the road course at Daytona. In pursuit of victory in the Rolex Daytona 24 Hour race, Mike Shank needed to add a relentless hot shoe to his talented race team. He turned to A.J. Allmendinger, and not only did A.J. become a key ingredient to the historic victory in the 50th 24 in 2012, he became a great friend. The two have leaned on each other for support in good times and bad, which is why Shank considers A.J. to be one of the central figures in the rise of Meyer Shank Racing.
