This week on Eavesdroppin' comedy podcast, hosts Geordie & Michelle look at two rock'n'roll tragedies … Anyone growing up in the 1990s will remember the beautifully talented yet maudlin musician Elliott Smith. Rising to fame and even being nominated for an Oscar for his song Miss Misery, which featured in the film Good Will Hunting, his songs were clever, insightful, sad and superb. He had the world at his feet, but a troubled past, alongside addictions and mental-health issues, led to the singer being found dead in his home on October 21, 2003. This week, Geordie looks at what happed to Elliott Smith. Was it suicide? Or was foul play involved? Listen now to find out more… Michelle follows with a mini-dive into the life and death of INXS front man Michael Hutchence, inspired by Geordie's recent look at Flame Fortune. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Aussie rockers INXS were one of the world's biggest bands, with lead singer, Michael Hutchence, considered the ultimate rock star. Yet a fateful assault in Copenhagen changed everything for Michael, ultimately leading to a personality change, bad relationship decisions and his death in a Sydney hotel room. What happened to Michael Hutchence? Did he take his own life? Was foul play involved? Was it a sex game gone wrong? And what happened to all his money? You'll have to listen to find out! So pop on your headphones, grab a brown lemonade and join Geordie & Michelle for this week's rock ‘n' roll episode, plus telly recs, chit chat about silver lamé and more, only on Eavesdroppin' podcast. My Favourite Elliott Smith Song

Our guests today are Dan Alvarez and Jordan Dunn-Pilz, who together make up the band Toledo.  The pair have been making music together since they were 11 years old, growing up in Newburyport in Massachusetts After parting ways for college, Dan and Jordan are now reunited and living in Brooklyn, New York, and are steadily building a big following, with their debut coming out in September this year.  For this episode, Dan and Jordan took a slightly different route, and instead of picking one track, we compare two well known recordings of the same song.  It was a lot of fun chatting to Dan and Jordan - you really get a sense of their friendship and chemistry as a double act - and I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation. From there she created her production company Last Doorway Productions in hopes of bringing a little more horror to the world . Since then she has written feature scripts, and created a series of short films, which she has Produced, Written, Directed and even starred in. Aside from her film projects, The Last Doorway Show. A show dedicated to Independent Horror Artists which she hosts under the pseudonym Miss Misery. Helping support the Independent Horror Artist and helping filmmakers get their short films shown. If you thought that wasn't enough she also Directs her own Short Horror Film Festival in San Francisco called “A Nightmare To Remember”  She hosts events around the bay area under the name Miss Misery. She also has her own segment on Creepy Kofy Movie Time called Web of Insanity and you can catch her at every horror convention through the year! Welcome...to the Graveyard Show Classic. This is a look-back at my interview with Reyna Young, horror host Miss Misery, and creator of the Last Doorway Productions, which was originally published on 03-12-2009. This was Reyna's first time on my show, and the topic on the table was women in horror, and the tough road she (and others) had faced trying to get ahead in the horror genre that was being run by men. This interview will open your eyes as to the sexism that existed even in 2009. A good interview to follow this with was my 2009 interview with Shannon Lark (Tombstone 16). The Graveyard Show Podcast can be found on Apple Podcast, Anchor, Spotify, Google Play, and wherever podcasts are available. And as you exit the graveyard I would like to remind you to please…lock the gate behind you…we wouldn't want anyone to get out. Until next time...

Euch erwartet feinster, erdiger, auch mal bluesiger Heavy Rock - Made in Scotland! HAIR OF THE DOG ist übrigens die Abkürzung für eine britische Metapher, die vollständig eigentlich "the hair of the dog that bit you" heißt. Elliott Smith was one of the great songwriters of the late 20th Century. That he received such well-deserved mainstream recognition of his talent through breakthrough songs like ‘Between The Bars' and ‘Miss Misery' and albums XO and Figure 8 feels like some justice. But that he left us so early in his life and career remains as heartbreaking as the saddest of his songs.

My Favourite Elliott Smith Song

In this episode, we speak to Ross Harris. Ross directed three music videos with Elliott Smith - Coming Up Roses, Heatmiser's Plainclothes Man and, perhaps Elliott's most iconic video, the one for Miss Misery. You may also know him as the robot hand salesman in the documentary on Elliott, Strange Parallel.  But, much more than those impressive credentials, Ross was a friend of Elliott's, and he has some great anecdotes. So, hopefully you enjoy this slightly extended chat with Ross - he has some lovely stories about the time they spent together.

Centennials and Rose Boulevard drummer Pete Stern joins Bill and Brian to discuss singer songwriter Elliott Smith's major label debut XO (1998, Dreamworks). Coming up in the Portland indie scene of the 90s, Smith eschewed the alt stylings of his band Heatmiser and gained attention with his folksy, DIY home recording. He got his big break when director Gus Van Zant included the song "Miss Misery" on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, and this album followed shortly after. Pete discusses hearing Elliott Smith first on MTVu but not really delving into his catalog until a few years later when his biography was released. Bran, Bill, and Pete then talk about the Oscars performance and Celine Dion, what Elliot's problem with Heatmiser was, Smith's 2003 suicide, the quality production of the album, the criminally underrated Jon Brion, a whole bunch of diving into Smith's dense lyrics, Joey and Lenny Waronker,  driving to Nashville on shrooms while listening to Weezer's "Hash Pipe," Brian Wilson's love of "Shortening Bread," how we would shorten the album a bit, and much much more are we make our way through the album track by track!

Another Dallas Comic Con was held this past weekend, October 4-6, at the Irving Convention Center. Derek was there looking through comics, taking in the sights, and talking with a variety of creators and publishers. He recorded his conversations, and you'll find the fruits of his labor in this new episode. This con was filled wtih celebrities, cosplayers, and comics sellers, but Derek headed straight for the people who are actually the heart and soul of the event: the writers, artists, and publishers of comics. While on the floor Derek was able to get brief interviews with Joe Eisma, Cary Nord, Robert Wilson IV, Josh Howard, Andy Hirsch, Richard Dominguez, Michael Golden, Steve Niles, and comics legend Neal Adams. He also took the time to engage with folks at several independent publishers such as Terror Comics (where you can find Life Is Brutal and Thought Nog), Overground Comics (home of Absent Captain and Graduate), Space Gun Studios (publishers of The Old Ones and Dash Bradley), Comic Book Divas (with Miss Misery's A Haunting Desire and Penny Dreadful's Cauldron of Terror), and the local distributors of Vamplets. There's lots of fun talk and interesting insights, so listen along as Derek meanders the convention floor.
