What happens when catchy tunes mask unsettling and problematic lyrics? Join Matt and Samer for a candid and thought-provoking journey through music history as we uncover the dark realities behind some of the most popular songs. We start with the Black Eyed Peas' "Let's Get It Started," originally rife with offensive language, only to be cleaned up thanks to the NBA's intervention. We then discuss Cher's "Half-Breed," reflecting on her series of similarly themed songs and how they shine a light on evolving societal standards and the need for mindful consumption of music. In this episode, we tackle the dissonance between melody and message by dissecting Sublime's "Wrong Way" and Benny Mardones' "Into the Night." Catchy, yes, but these tracks come with disturbing themes that raise serious ethical questions. Our exploration doesn't stop there; we also critique Genesis' "Illegal Alien" for its outdated portrayal of Mexican stereotypes and take a closer look at the flirtatious yet potentially coercive undertones of the holiday classic "Baby, It's Cold Outside." Through modern reinterpretations, we examine how the song's lyrics resonate—or don't—in today's context.Rounding off our discussion, we analyze the cultural insensitivity and lack of research that plagued pre-internet era songs like Band-Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and George Jones' "The Poor Chinee." Misguided intentions and offensive stereotypes are laid bare, prompting us to question the responsibilities of artists and platforms in handling such content today. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/cancel-these-songs/pl.u-8dqGjTZrAMJ1. Then Sam spins the dial on the ole satellite radio and uncovers the saga of Dodie Stevens, who scored a hit with "Pink Shoelaces" just shy of her 13th birthday and went on to record an answer song to "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town": "Billy, I've Got To Go To Town." Many parents use their relationship as a bargaining chip and tool to manage their kids' behavior, which can be problematic. This episode talks through this strategy  and some of the unintended consequences that might come as a result, and gives alternative ways to prioritize our relationship with our kids.Often because we recognize how important attachment is for our kids, we then turn around and use that same attachment as a way to try to change kids' behavior and 'teach them a lesson.' This type of approach makes it almost impossible to feel safe and secure in relationships, which we know is required for kids to behave well and manage their emotions and behaviors.Attempting to manipulate kids' behaivor by withholding love and connection can send really dangerous messages, that our relationship with them is dependent on their behavior, and if they don't meet our requirements, we'll withhold the very thing they so desperately crave.Research is incredibly clear that kids learn through experiences as opposed to words. Connection, regulation, safety, and security cannot be taught and truly believed if we simply tell our kids about those concepts. They have to EXPERIENCE connection, safety, regulation, and security with us in order to believe that those concepts are true and can be trusted. Relationship is ALWAYS the solution, not a tool to use to manipulate behavior.Subscribe, rate, and review us on Podchaser, Apple,  or wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow us on social media to join the conversation!!!FacebookInstagram

There's nothing like a good story. A narrative that tells a tale is one of the most effective ways to relate an event, both fact or fiction and also a straightforward way to evoke an underlying message. We have grown up believing that the best stories are found in books. The stories that songs tell can be just as powerful and moving as any book or movie. By listening to them carefully, we make them a part of our life for just a second. Sods og Sort Sol: En enestående balance mellem turbulens og værdighed

Rockhistorier

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 27, 2020 130:37

Sods: Copenhagen (1979)Sods: Marble Station (1980)Sods: Misguided (1980)Sort Sol: White Shirt (f1983)Sort Sol: Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town (1985)Sort Sol: A Knife for The Ladies (1987) Sort Sol: Abyss Revisited (1987) Sort Sol: Indian Summer (1992)Sort Sol: Siggimund Blue (1991)Sort Sol: Daughter of Sad (1991)Sort Sol: Når Solen stikker af (1991 Sort Sol: Dog Star Man (1993)Sort Sol: Shaheeba Bay (1993)Sort Sol: Kiss the Streets (1996)Sort Sol: Sol 66 (1996)Sort Sol: Rhinestone (2001)Sort Sol: Like a Trance Like (2017)

I’m Danny Lane, the curator of The Music Museum. This exhibit is called The Vietnam War: The Music. Our mission here at the Music Museum is to support all Vietnam Veterans and those who serve the United States, then and now. We thank you for your service. Early-on, in Vietnam, soldiers turned to music as a lifeline to the home front they promised to defend. Rock & roll (R&R) really became rest & relaxation (R&R) for the troops. It was this music that got you through another day, another day closer to going home. Music was a big part of a soldier’s down time that centered within the hooches of Vietnam. The music that was popular during the Vietnam War was, and is still, therapy. There are songs you can remember, and then there are songs you REALLY remember. Many of these songs will have a special meaning for you. A place, a brother, a time gone by. This program is for you, the Vietnam Vets, who will never forget. ***** In this episode we feature a song by a two-tour Vietnam Veteran, Chip Dockery, who served with the 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base. His song is a "brag song" for a pilot friend's going home party. It lists the places he has been, the people (mostly forward air controllers) and agencies with which he has worked, and the missions he has flown. It’s called “I’ve Been Everywhere” ****** Our goal with The Vietnam War: The Music is to honor the fallen and the survivors with the music that got them through “just one more day”. Our shows are broadcast around the world. They say thank you & “welcome home” to all Vietnam Vets. There is no opinion offered on the War. It’s all about the music. **** For your service and your sacrifice, this is The Vietnam War: The Music. **** This episode is called “Out Beyond The Wire” ****** ***** Join the conversation on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 **** or by email at dannymemorylane@gmail.com **** In this episode you’ll hear: 1) Volunteers by Jefferson Airplane 2) Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town by Kenny Rogers & The First Edition 3) Welcome Home by Country Joe McDonald 4) You Can't Do That by The Beatles 5) Casey Jones by The Grateful Dead 6) For You by Johnny Cash & Dave Matthews 7) Southbound and Down by Dave Dudley 8) Dancing In The Street by Martha & The Vandellas 9) Tour of Duty by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit 10) Badge by Cream 11) Purple Rain by Prince and The Revolution 12) Almost Cut My Hair by Crosby, Stills & Nash 13) And When I Die by Blood, Sweat & Tears 14) Lay Me Down (Draped in the Red White and Blue) by Elvis Carden 15) She Never Spoke Spanish To Me by The Texas Tornados 16) I've Been Everywhere by Chip Dockery 17) Ooby Dooby by Creedence Clearwater Revival 18) Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere by Neil Young (w/ Crazy Horse) 19) Boys by The Shirelles 20) Coming Home Soldier by Bobby Vinton 21) Abilene by George Hamilton IV 22) Down In The Boondocks by Billy Joe Royal 23) Take It To The Limit by Suzy Bogguss 24) Hanky Panky by Tommy James & The Shondells 25) People Got to Be Free by Dionne Warwick 26) Love Hurts by The Everly Brothers 27) From The Beginning by Emerson, Lake & Palmer 28) I Wanna Grow Up To Be A Politician by The Byrds 29) Wagon Wheel by Darius Rucker 30) The Letter by The Box Tops 31) Anna (Go To Him) by Arthur Alexander 32) The Beautiful by Five for Fighting 33) To Love Somebody by Janis Joplin 34) Act Naturally by Buck Owens 35) Queen Of The Highway by The Doors 36) A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall by Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians

We play cinematic book club and tackle some lesser-known film adaptations of novels. But first, we nominate some songs that would make great (or at least, plausible) movies, raising a glass of sherry to the partied-out songwriting of the 1970s. Later, we attempt a tricky adaptation of a short story with tense geopolitical and interpersonal implications, and wrap it up with some finds from our respective watchlists. Show Notes Episode 204: Kellyanne, Don't Take Your Love to Trump This week Host Dave Bledsoe doles out relationship advice, unfortunately his only lasting one is with a bottle of Jameson. (To be fair, they've been together for years!) On the show this week, we talk Conway vs Conway in a steel cage match to keep the love of a good woman from being stolen away by a dinky fingered porn groper. (Surprisingly, this is NOT as shot at Dave!) Along the way we look at the history of Worst Couple as they rose from the children of wealth and privilege to the highest pinnacles of D.C. power. (They took the elevator one floor) From there we look at love and politics in America only to find we might be good for a one night stand with Campus Gun Chick, we are NOT going to take her home to meet Mom! (Who, actually, would LOVE her!) Finally, we ask the hard question: Are George and Kelletor gonna be OK after this week of hell. (Our sources say they are snuggling all the way to the bank.) Our Sponsor this week is Fix-A-Spouse, don't divorce: deprogram! We open the show with the Woolf's and a lovely dinner party and close with the Dukes of Maslow asking if Ruby could leave her love at home. Obtuvieron varios éxitos en las listas pop y country, incluyendo "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)," "But You Know I Love You," "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town," "Tell It All, Brother," "Reuben James," y "Something's Burning."

Welcome to episode #28 where I am pleased to bring you a band that I wasn't sure I'd ever see on the LMP. When I saw that Cake was in the line-up for this year's Wakarusa festival I hoped there might be a chance that a taper would get their set. Fortunately for me Brian Price was able to pull off a great sounding recording and especially fortunate since I missed out on Wakarusa this year. Cake's catchy guitar riffs, blazing trumpet solos, and off the wall lyrics all make them a great band, but I don't know if they've gotten a lot of live attention. I've seen them a couple times in the past and take if from me if you are fan you will enjoy the show. You can't really argue with the statistics, 9 out of 10 German tourist interviewed agree that their songs rock even though they miss the rising action a little bit.
