Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys. In this episode we’re talking about 1986’s Spookies and 1991’s Popcorn. First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also, thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful for that support. Thanks! We start by briefly discussing what we’ve done lately involving horror. Justin talks about seeing Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, Liam talks about the surprise of finding out that The Walking Dead comic book series wrapped up, and we discuss the trailers for Underwater, Antlers, The Pool, Bliss, Happy Face, Satanic Panic, Parasite, The Death Of Dick Long, The Golden Glove, Climate Of The Hunter, Scream, Queen!, Rock Paper Scissors, Something Else, and Deerskin. Justin also talks about attending Monster Mania Con in Cherry Hill last weekend. We begin by talking about Spookies. We give a basic outline of the plot and discuss the troubled production of the film, in which the entirety of the film was shot and then the financier decided to shoot additional footage with a different director to pad the running time. The weird phenomenon of actual adults looking for a place to drink and party in the beginning is discussed. We talk about how the movies strength (the excellent practical effects) is also is its biggest weakness, in that the film is clearly just an extended set up to show off the various effects. The unfortunate problematic nature of the Asian spider women is touched upon. Some of our favorite parts of the movie are discussed. We talk about the phenomenon of a bad movie being made earnestly being somewhat redeeming. We conclude by talking about how despite being flawed it is still a rather charming movie, and how it’s a shame it’s so hard to find on home media. Next up is Popcorn. We give a brief outline of the movie and discuss how it has developed a cult following since it’s been released, despite being widely panned critically. We talk about the movie’s failed attempt at offering some kind of “meta” commentary on slasher films. The troubled production of the movie is touched upon. We talk about what doesn’t work for the movie, including lackluster performances, disjointed narratives, and a weak storyline. Justin argues that the movie isn’t clever or good enough to accomplish what it sets out to do, which is lightly parody and skewer the William Castle style gimmicks of 1950s/1960s horror and scifi movies. The films attempt at being subversive and failing is touched upon. Liam argues that movie actually succeeds at being “respectful” to the movies it’s attempting to skewer. Some of inconsistencies in the movie are discussed As always thanks to everyone and anyone who donated on Patreon, checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening. Any questions, comments, suggestions for movies and guests, or if you yourself want to join us for a movie viewing or even an episode, can be sent to thehorrorbiz@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you! Thanks always to Justin Miller, Jacob Roberts, and Doug Tilley for their technical contributions and fliers, Mike Smaczylo for the shirts and fliers (you can check more of his work out at here), and also thanks to Josh Alvarez for the theme song, Chris, Brad, Alexis, and LVAC for the support and buttons (check them out at www.xlvacx.com), and a HUGE thank you to anyone who retweeted us or shared something on Facebook that we posted.

Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business, the podcast that’s in the goddamn club isn’t it? In this episode we’re talking the films of Fred Dekker, specifically Monster Squad and Night Of The Creeps. We’re joined on this episode by fellow Cinepunk and longtime friend Evan Vellela. First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screenprinting company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a tshirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Thanks! We begin by talking about what horror related things we had done lately. Evan talks about working a Gogol Bordello show in Philly, which is followed by a brief discussion on Liam and Evan’s understanding of Romany culture in South Philly. Evan also discusses watching a film in the Coffin Joe trilogy, as well as some recent purchases from Amoeba in LA and his fascination with the YouTube series Hot Ones. Liam discusses his recent viewings of Lips Of Blood, The Living Dead Girl, as well as needing to watch Fascination and rewatching Tourist Trap. Justin talks about watching The Other Side Of The Door, seeing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 at the Mahoning Drive In, Monster Mania Con, and catching a George Romero triple feature in Philadelphia. Liam and Justin briefly discuss Darren Aranofsky’s mother! and then discuss The Walking Dead with Evan. We then talk about our choices for the ideal Halloween movie marathons. Up first is 1986’s Night Of The Creeps. We open up by talking about the film was a financial disaster but ultimately ended gaining an actual cult following. We follow by giving a brief plot summary. We discuss the homoerotic undertones of the film, JC’s glibness with women as compared to Chris’ awkwardness with them, and the underlying darkness that is in stark contrast to the popular conception of the film as a horror comedy. Shane Black’s peripheral involvement in this film is touched upon, and John Carpenter’s Elvis biopic is for some reason talked about. The heavy handedness of the films tribute to classic horror as a possible turn off for contemporary audiences is discussed. Liam talks about how this is his favorite of Dekker’s work, and we gush about Tom Atkins for a minute. The numerous endings of the movie are discussed and the similarities between Slither and Night Of The Creeps is touched upon. Justin talks about what he doesn’t like about the movie, and we talk about this film is a great example of a 1980S HORROR FILM archetype. Evan and Justin piss Liam off by talking about the way their college experience compares to JC and Chris’. Up next we talk 1987’s Monster Squad. We talk about how Liam Neeson was supposed to be in the film and how Shane Black’s original script included a much bigger opening scene. Evan talks about his first exposure to the film, and we discuss how weird it was that there as a period in time when this film was not very well known despite now being considered a cult classic. Justin talks about finding it when it came out on DVD for the first time, and how despite being scared of the Wolfman as a child he is now far more scared of the Gillman. Justin tells a weird stupid story from his childhood about misunderstanding something from this movie. The creature design of the movie is touched upon, and Liam points out that this film, like The Goonies, is one that despite being very much about childhood is not necessarily a film one would want to show to a child due to examples of “80s style” misogyny and homophobia. The subtle darkness of the film i.e. “Scary German Guy” being a Holocaust survivor, the discussion of divorce and how it impacts children, and Dracula’s intent to kill children is examined. The need for a sequel to the film is discussed,

Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Thanks! This episode we are CONCLUDING our multi-episode series on the concept of animal horror, with 1988’s Slugs and 1972’s Frogs We begin by talking about what horror related things we had done lately. Liam talks about catching Lady .45 at the Mahoning Drive In’s Lethal Ladies event and watching Cooties. Justin discusses his experiences at Monster Mania Con in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Woo! Up first we talk about 1988’s Slugs. We open up by talking about the lunacy that is the fact that this is based on a novel. We give a basic outline of the film. We discuss the difficulty in making the titular animals threatening and how the film oftentimes fails to believably do so. We talk about the strange language barrier often found in films in the English language written by people who do not consider English their primary language. We talk about the surprising effectiveness of some of the films special effects and how the ending suffers from the same problem that Pirahna suffered from. The pointlessness of the near rape that occurs towards the end is examined in depth. Next is 1972’s Frogs. We discuss this movie possibly being the quintessential ‘when animals attack’ film. We talk about the variety of animals attacking people in the film that aren’t frogs, and how the island the film takes place on harbors an insane variety of wildlife. The social/racial/economic implications of the film are dissected in depth i.e. how the film portrays capitalism and offers a rather bleak version of a capitalist view on the environment. The films depiction of a wealthy white family being a far more accurate representation of the voting base for Trump is examined. The fx and over quality of the film are discussed, as is Sam Elliott’s lack of a mustache. We end by talking about Victor Salva, the convicted pedophile who is known for creating the Jeepers Creepers franchise and whose name has resurfaced with the upcoming release of Jeepers Creepers 3. Do not support Victor Salva, and if you want to watch some fun cheesy horror films, instead of going to see Jeepers Creepers 3, just watch these movies. Or see It twice. Or do literally anything other than support Victor Salva. Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business! We have got one WILD episode in store you guys. As always thank you for listening and we hope you enjoy the episode! First and foremost, we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screenprinting company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a tshirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Thanks! This episode we are continuing our series on the concept of animal horror, with two films from 1972: Night Of 1000 Cats and Pigs. We begin by talking about what horror related things we had done lately. Liam talks about the recent 3-D film festival 3D DEMENTIA by Exhumed Films he went to, and Justin talks about seeing Annabelle: Origin, seeing Jaws at the Frank Banko Ale House in Bethlehem, and viewing The Devil’s Candy and Green Inferno. Up first we talk about 1972’s Night Of 1000 Cats. We begin by pointing out that unlike the other films we’ve covered for this series, both films in this episode do not feature the titular animals as the main antagonists, but are instead titled as such for ease of marketing. We then briefly discuss Hugo Stiglitz’s career, and how his character in this film is an extension of the character he often plays. We talk about the varying cuts of the film and how those different cuts affect the perception of the film. The basic plot of the film is given, and criticism of the poor cutting of the film is discussed. The treatment of the animals in the film is discussed, as is Hugo’s relationship with his sidekick Gorgo. How the film treats pathological disorders related to compulsive killing is discussed. Finally, we talk about that while the cats are not heavily featured as antagonists, they are used to portray the mental state of the character of Hugo in that he is often times on the verge of frenzy, and his psychosis is something struggling to get out. Next is 1972’s Pigs. We talk about the film’s numerous titles, and how each title was done in an attempt to cash in on some cinematic trend or another by adding or deleting scenes after the film had been initially released. We give a basic plot outline of the version we saw, and discuss the surprising quality of the film given the production value. We talk about how the film could actually be two separate films, given the two main plotlines actually being whole in and of themselves. The acting, cinematography, and soundtrack are briefly touched upon. We talk about the main characters remaining largely sympathetic throughout the film, while the murder victims being surprisingly unsympathetic. As with the first film, we talk about how the state of the titular animals is used to portray an internal mental state of the characters. As always thanks to everyone and anyone who checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening. Greetings goofs and ghouls! Thank you as always for checking us out and we have got one heck of an episode for you guys. We are joined for this episode by our good friend Jeff Thibault from Monster Mania Con. This was a lot of fun to record and we’re super excited for you guys to hear it. Thanks! This episode we are taking a look at two Italian haunted house films, 1981’s HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY and 1988’s LA CASA 3 AKA GHOST HOUSE. We begin by talking about what we’ve seen recently. Jeff and Justin were lucky enough to catch a screening of the 2016 body horror/Lovecraftian horror/goopfest THE VOID and talk briefly about it. Justin and Liam briefly spar over the season 7 finale of THE WALKING DEAD. First up is Lucio Fulci’s HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY. We give a brief background on Fulci’s ‘Gates Of Hell Trilogy’ and his distinct filmmaking style, his background, and a brief summation of the plot of HBTC. Liam talks about the vagueness of the characters being aware of certain plot elements and how the main characters son is the only character in the film that isn’t suspect. Jeff points out the large number of red herrings in the movie and how this might be influenced by Hitchcock’s tendency to do the same. Justin and Jeff touch upon Fulci’s tendency to unsettle with techniques both subtle and heavy handed, and Liam follows up with discussing Fulci’s films often times choosing strange and violent imagery over substantial plots, and how Fulci was capable of taking a “cornball” premise and turning it into something more than it’s parts. Justin talks about the similarities between this film and THE SHINING. Justin discusses the voyeuristic nature of Fulci’s cinematography, there is discussion on whether not Fulci is actually good filmmaker, and then Liam ruthlessly attacks Justin for not being that into European horror. There is a brief discussion as to what genre this film is, and whether or not it should be counted as a ‘gates of hell’ movie as there is no actual gates of hell in the film. Up next we talk about Umberto Lenzi’s LA CASA 3 AKA GHOST HOUSE. We talk about the history of the LA CASA franchise and the European tradition of making unofficial sequels to American films and the story of Italian genre filmmaker Joe D’amato. There is a brief summation of the plot of Ghost House, a discussion of how this is one of the rare films in which the ‘scary children’ trope is successful, and how this movie, despite lacking the finesse of someone like Fulci, is actually quite effective and while unrefined a lot of fun to watch due to the dedication and earnestness of the people involved in making it. Huge thanks to Jeff Thibault for making the journey up to the valley to hang with us and talk about Italian horror movies! Greetings boils and ghouls, and welcome back to Horror Business, the podcast that’s as hot as love. We have jam packed slam bang of an episode for this week and we know you’re gonna love it. This episode we did a retrospective of the first three Phantasm films, and were joined by Josh Alvarez of Cinepunx to help us dissect this classic franchise. In addition to Josh being on Horror Business to talk about the first three movies, we’re actually going to carry the conversation over to Cinepunx later this week to discuss the final two films in the Phantasm franchise. I told you we had a treat for you guys. We begin by talking about what we’ve seen or done recently in the realm of horror. We talk about the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, Monster Mania Con, Josh seeing Halloween III for the first time, and Josh having a semi run in with the great Bill Mosely in Texas. Naturally we begin with the first Phantasm film. We discuss our first encounter with the film, how we’ve come to appreciate it, the very unique narrative and style of the film, and how it remains unlike anything else to this day. Of note we focus on the performance of Angus Scrimm as the Tall Man and the films inconsistent narrative as virtue to keep the viewer unsettled.   The second film in the franchise is discussed next. Amongst other things we talk about the uneven tone of the movie in that it seems to be back and forth between horror and action, the film suffering from the shortcomings of both late 80s action and late 80s horror, Reggie’s weird libido, and the unnecessary opening sequence. Next we tackle the third film in the franchise. We talk about the continuing feeling of ‘is this a dream?’ throughout these movies, Coscarelli’s tendency to be a bit ‘on the nose’ about everything, the unevenness of tone yet again in this film, Reggie’s continuing tendency to push the boundaries between decent and indecent when it comes to sex, and the future of the Phantasm franchise after this film.   For the conclusion of our Phantasm retrospective check out the upcoming episode of Cinepunx at www.cinepunx.com. Follow them on twitter and Instagram at @cinepunx. As always thanks to everyone and anyone who checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. Thanks to Josh not only for the theme song but also for being gracious enough to appear on this episode and record it at his house. We love you forever for listening. Any questions, comments, suggestions for movies and guests, or if you yourself want to join us for a movie viewing or even an episode, can be sent to thehorrorbiz@gmail.com. Huge thanks to Jeff Thibault for getting us the Robert Englund and Bill Moseley bumpers. Thanks to those two as well for recording the bumpers.
