Shazbot! Mork from Ork (Robin Williams) crash-landed in Colorado and into living rooms across the country. Yes, Mork & Mindy was an instant otherworldly hit thanks, in part, to its late-great leading man. But now, decades later, does the 70's sitcom wear out its welcome before we can say “Nanu Nanu”? Does Mork's method of learning seem more like an endless standup set? And why do the Old Roommates think Pam Dawber deserves an honorary Emmy Award? Brian and Christina take a seat, headfirst, and revisit the iconic TV comedy through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. It will rot your brain, Slackers, but who doesn't love some goold old fashioned network TV?Remember every fall when they would announce the new tv season? It was always exciting to have the new episodes of our favorite shows, but what shows really ruled the airwaves for the season,Not unlike professional sports, each TV season was actually a competition between networks, each vying for ratings dominance. I know that in the late 70s and early 80s, ABC was the dominant network, with shows like Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Three's Company, and Mork & Mindy. By the mid 80s, NBC would go on a big run, with shows like The Cosby Show, Cheers, Family Ties, and A Different World. Surprisingly, many spinoffs actually outperformed the shows that launched them. And did you know that despite having the most viewed episode ever (at the time), M*A*S*H was never the top show of any season? With streaming being the way most of us consume programming nowadays, this episode made me hearken back to a simpler time - The Big Three networks and the September through April program season. Then we took the summer off - and TV didn't matter.

I am very excited to share the second of a two-part conversation with author and TV/film historian, Lee Gambin. His double-volume work, "Tonight, On a Very Special Episode: When TV Sitcoms Sometimes Got Serious," provides a launch pad for our thoughtful and fast-paced discussion of the issues and activists behind TV's “very special episodes,” which date back 50 years or more.   These TV events—featuring familiar, beloved characters—mixed serious topics with comedy so effectively that, in many cases, activists were born, movements were started, legislation was passed, and minds were changed.   Legendary showrunners like Norman Lear and Linda Bloodworth-Thomason used the sitcom format to normalize awareness and discussion of race relations, women's issues, representation, discrimination, divorce, alcoholism and drug addiction, sexual assault, HIV/AIDS, and LGBTQ rights.   Fronting these issues shaped our culture in ways that should not be lost to history. Join us for a discussion of the iconic episodes and the legends who made them happen, as well as how they continue to impact us today.   CONNECT WITH LEE GAMBIN   Tonight, On A Very Special Episode: When TV Sitcoms Sometimes Got Serious Volume 1: 1957-1985   Tonight, On A Very Special Episode: When TV Sitcoms Sometimes Got Serious Volume 2: 1986-1998   Cinemaniacs   SOUND CLIPS   Diff'rent Strokes: The Bicycle Man (S5.E16-17)   Designing Women: Killing All the Right People (S2.E4)   All in The Family: Edith's 50th Birthday (S8.E4-5)   BOOKS / ARTICLES   Norman Lear Memoir - Even This I Get to Experience   PERTINENT EPISODES OF ADVANCED TV HERSTORY   Designing Women 1, Body-shaming 0   Sports Night: More Relevant Than Ever   Eating Disorder Movies: TV For and About Women   ATVH NEWSLETTER Sign up at https://cynthiabemisabrams.com/   CONNECT WITH CYNTHIA BEMIS ABRAMS and ADVANCED TV HERSTORY Website:  https://cynthiabemisabrams.com/ Podcasts:  https://cynthiabemisabrams.com/advanced-tv-herstory Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/advancedtvherstory/ Twitter:  https://twitter.com/tvherstory Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/Media.Cynthia YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/@advancedtvherstory/featured   PRODUCTION Music:  Jahzzar - https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Jahzzar/

In this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman interviews Jon of Mars. Jon of Mars is an alien who is stuck on Earth in a small town during the COVID-19 lockdown. The concept behind Jon of Mars is an outlet for Jon's curiosity about human behavior and his own feelings of being an alien. Jon believes that his whole life has been a theme of not understanding why people act the way they do. He is a curious mind that wants to understand why things work the way they do and why people do the things that they do. Pipeman and Jon discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the world and how it affected everyone differently. Jon talks about the inspiration behind his album and how he often feels like an alien in different situations. He thinks that the lockdown was the craziest time that the world has had in the last hundred years, and he wanted to capture the weird facets and niche things about human life in such a strange state. As they discuss Jon of Mars's story, Pipeman brings up the TV show "Mork and Mindy," which featured an alien who reported back to his leader about Earthlings and Earth. Jon is not familiar with the show, but he agrees that whoever sent aliens down to Earth during COVID-19 must have thought that people on Earth were kind of whacked out. The interview concludes with Jon discussing his love of music and how it has helped him cope with the difficulties of life. Overall, the conversation between Pipeman and Jon of Mars offers insight into the creative process behind Jon's music and the inspiration behind his unique concept. It's Twosday! And to celebrate, Jay and Shua are taking a look at sequels. Not just movies, but TV, video games, music and more! Come have fun with us and Enjoy Stuff 2: Electric Boogaloo!   Today is February 22, 2022. Why is that important you ask? Well, if you are a numerophile then you might be really interested in the date 2-22-22. Especially at 2:22:22. For us, it means today is all about the number two! Specifically, sequels. Join us as we look into the the history and thought process behind making a continuation of a story.   News A Futurama revival has been ordered for Hulu RIP Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman Are you ready for a new Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers movie? It's coming to Disney+ Soon we will get to see how Ralphie raised his kids in a Christmas Story sequel John Cena will be co-starring with the legendary stunt performer, Wile E. Coyote in Coyote vs Acme What we're Enjoying Shua Received a very special retro gift from his lovely wife for Valentine's Day. Two peanuts collections in paperback form from the 60s helped to spark tons of childhood memories. She used to read them endlessly and his drawing career began when he would copy the pictures from Books. Jay started a new series on Amazon Prime. Reacher tells the story of a muscular Stranger who wanders into town and gets accused of murder. Trust us, it's better than we are making it sound.   Enjoy Movies! (and TV, Games, Music, and more!) Sequels have been around almost as long as movies. But when did they start adding numbers to a title to indicate that it was a continuation of the plot? We found the first evidence of a Roman numeral in a title back in 1957 with a movie from England called Quatermass II. Roman numerals became really popular after 1974's The Godfather part II. We got a plethora of sequels with those parallel little numbering systems with Superman II, Star Trek two, Rambo II, and of course the iconic weekend at Bernie's II. They don't all have Roman numerals but a sequel really means that someone liked the first story and wanted it to continue. Why do we like sequels? Is it just a cash grab from the studios? Or is it because we just don't want the characters and story to end?   Sequels aren't unique to movies either. Television shows sometimes have sequels, but usually they're called spinoffs. The Jeffersons was a spinoff to All in the Family. Laverne and Shirley was a spinoff for Happy Days, as was Mork and Mindy. The title numbering may be different, but they are still sequels.   Video games jumped into the sequel world. Sometimes they would differentiate from the original by giving it a similar title like Donkey Kong Jr. or Ms. Pac-Man. Or sometimes they maintained their cinematic quality by giving them numbers like Streetfighter II or Mortal Kombat II.   Even the music industry got into the sequel numbering game. We just can't stop reviewing "backdoor pilot" episodes of The Facts of Life, so here we go again. This time Blair and Jo are graduating from Eastland, and perhaps this could have led to a spinoff series set at nearby Langley College. It didn't, of course, but it's still a fun two-part episode. We meet several new girls: Alexandra could have been a new Blair-type character at Eastland, while the graduating Emily, Bonnie, and Lisa could have joined a new cast at Langley. (For Lisa, life is a series of shoe problems. She could have become the most psychologically troubled sitcom character since Jan Brady.) We also have Mrs. Garrett juggling dozens of Jello molds and hundreds of pineapples, Roy the creepy bread delivery boy, a bizarre flashback sequence, Tootie seemingly in charge of the whole graduation ceremony, and the trouble with tassels. Also: We wish a Happy Birthday to Mork & Mindy's Pam Dawber, Kevin is on Gleaming the Tube and Earth Station One, and Kornflake is hiding under a giant pile of blankets. Kevin, Kevin, and Mike talking Wonder Woman on Gleaming the Tube! Kevin, Mike, and Mike talking Monkees on Earth Station One! And our regular links... The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to sister & brother Kathleen Marshall and Scott Marshall, the children of writer/producer/director/actor Garry Marshall. Having grown up with Kathi and Scotty at elementary school in the valley in the free range seventies at the Oakwood School, Josh dives into this episode which is chalk full of arcane memories and bizarre moments. Garry Marshall, of course, was the creator of such TV blockbusters as The Odd Couple, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley and Mork and Mindy. He also was the director of major motion pictures like Pretty Woman, The Princess Dairies and Beaches among many others. As an actor, his amazing Bronx accent and personality steals scenes in Lost in America, A League of Their Own, Murphy Brown and the psychotronic sixties film Psych-Out among others. The man never stopped moving and we hear why on this episode.   As free-range seventies kids, you couldn't escape The Fonz's “eeehhh,” Mork's Laverne's “Vodeo-do”  or Mork's “Shazbot, Nanu nanu” catch phrases. Even AC/DC's Bon Scott referenced Robin Williams on the song “Night Prowler” from the 7 x platinum album Highway to Hell. Marshall's shows made an indelible make on popular culture worldwide. So what was it like growing up with the man who helped define said pop culture? We hear about a Beatlemania-like crowd that almost killed Scotty at a Happy Days promotional event in Milwaukee, how their mother Barbara kept the kids grounded with her midwestern roots, how aunt Penny Marshall gave salt-n-pepper shakers away at Thanksgiving parties, Garry's almost two decade long obsession with basketball games in his back yard and a truly bonkers story about how Eddie Van Halen saved the day by bringing a flying V guitar to Scott's band Fred Zeppelin at a performance at the Oakwood Arts Festival. The “Atomic Punk” to the rescue! I ask you, what other podcast covers Frank Zappa, Jackie Gleason, cinematographer Haskell Wexler & Rob Reiner? It was a rollicking good time reconnecting with Kathi and Scotty as you will soon hear. So take a listen to the Rarified Heir Podcast.

TV in the 70's had its share of Sci-Fi even before Star Wars. Some of it may have been cheesy and kitschy, but it was loads of fun! Jay and Shua find a treasure trove of Disco-ey science fiction and don their sparkly bell bottoms on Enjoy Stuff   Did you grow up in the 70's? If so, you probably watched more Sci-Fi on TV than you remember. If you didn't, you gotta listen to us explain what inspired the great stuff we have today!    News -A cool dad make his kid a homemade Star Tours in their garage! -Get ready for a bunch of GameBoy games coming to the Nintendo Switch Online -The Matrix 4 gets a mind-blowing trailer What we're Enjoying Star Trek: Lower Decks has beamed its way into Shua's heart. This series may be a parody, but it honors all the Trek shows with references and care. Check it out on Paramount+. Jay has been watching some Jackie Chan flicks. Supercop was the third in a series of Chan films that showcased his stunt work and karate ability. Oh wait, they all did that... Enjoy TV Sci-Fi has been around for generations. And it really gathered some steam after Star Wars came out in 1977. But there certainly was some interesting stuff on television in the early 70's. Saturday mornings had some great kid-centered cartoons like Sealab 2020, but Sid and Marty Krofft had some live action classics like Land of the Lost, The Lost Saucer, and the wacky Far Out Space Nuts.    Ark II and Jason of Star Command used a slightly bigger budget to enhance their effects, but they had their share of kitsch too. As kids, we didn't care. We loved the imaginative adventures.    In syndication, we got some anime like Battle of the Planets and Star Blazers. Star Trek the Animated Series kept the Trek Dream alive.    Prime time TV kept trying to figure out exactly what Sci-Fi was with early showings such as Land of the Giants, Space: 1999, The Six Million Dollar Man, and the Bionic Woman. But as George Lucas unleashed his vision upon the world, the later 70's showed us Sci-Fi juxtaposed in just about every genre of TV entertainment.    Comedies like Mork and Mindy and Quark kept us laughing. Hour long cinematic stories like Battlestar Galactica, Logan's Run, and Buck Rogers experimented with episodic drama mixed with cheesy 70's humor and music.   There were so many different shows to choose from! And it helped keep us involved and inspired to create all we have today.    Do you think 70's Sci-Fi is groovy? Let us know in the Discord channel or send us an email to podcast@enjoystuff.com

It's the FINAL FOUR EPISODES! Mark, Rick and Brian welcome back returning guest Josh Damoulakis for a "reviewsit" of the TV overload known as Stay Tuned. The gents discuss how this television parody movie is extremely difficult to find online or streaming, run through the complete list of shows and commercials that were mocked throughout the film and they get all excited to play the game of "Spot the Spota" once again involving the calling card of frequent "reviewsit" director Peter Hyams. The lads also ponder if Home Improvement got some Tool Time segment ideas from a few of the scenes, they add some more modern shows to update the sadistic programming of 'Hellevision' and engage in quite a lot of talk about donuts. Turn off that TV before you get sucked in (literally) as this one is much safer and also more fun than taking "Doogie fishing"....if you know what we mean!
