Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode. In today's Monday Motivation I'm riffing on the popular Charlotte Mason idea of Mother Culture™ and applying it to the homemaker. Mother Culture™ stresses the importance of cultivating your own soul and mind with the express purpose of having something good, true and beautiful to offer those in your care. Homemaker Culture, as I have experienced it over the past 30+ years, involves claiming small windows of time amidst our busy days to cultivate a rich reading life, religious life, artful life and creative life. This episode will focus on the creative life, with some practical suggestions to help you begin to pursue Homemaker Culture. In this episode Leah Boden, of Modern Miss Mason, joins me to discuss the big idea of mother culture and self-care. Mothers choosing to educate their children at home have many responsibilities, and burn out is common. Apparently, this is true for every generation of women as Charlotte Mason gave wise advice to weary mothers of her time, and it's just as applicable for mothers today. In this episode we discuss the following topics: Why Charlotte Mason's method and philosophy are applicable for modern families How we can apply the three instruments of education A method versus a system Why mothers become burnt out, what Charlotte advised, and how we can apply it. Leah Boden is wife to Dave, mother to four children, and a longtime home educator. With over two decades of experience in church leadership, Leah's background also features many years in youth, children's, and family work within the church and for the local education authority. The Dr. Pat Show: Talk Radio to Thrive By!: The Petroglyphs of Mu: Pohnpei, Nan Madol, and the Legacy of Lemuria with Guest Carole Nervig. In this fully illustrated exploration, Nervig documents her discoveries on Pohnpei, revealing how the archetypal symbols of the Pohnpaid petroglyphs have exact counterparts in other ancient cultures and universal motifs throughout the world, including the Australian Aborigines, the Inca in Peru, the Vedic civilization of India, early Norse runes, and Japanese symbols. She provides evidence that Pohnpaid is closely related to--yet predates--neighboring Nan Madol and shows how Pohnpaid was an outpost of the sunken Kahnihmueiso, a city of the now-vanished civilization of Mu, or Lemuria. Discussing the archaeoastronomical function of the Pohnpaid stones, the author examines how many of the glyphs symbolize celestial phenomena and clearly reveal how their creators were sky watchers with a sophisticated understanding of astronomy, geophysics, geomancy, and engineering. She shows how the scientific concepts depicted in the petroglyphs reveal how the citizens of Mu had a much deeper understanding of the living Earth than we do, which gave them the ability to manipulate natural forces both physically and energetically. Combining archaeological evidence with traditional oral accounts, Nervig reveals Pohnpaid not only as a part of a geodetic network of ancient sacred sites and portals but also as a remnant of the now submerged but once enlightened Motherland of Mu. Carole Nervig first moved to Micronesia as a Peace Corps volunteer in 1969. With her creation of the Nan Madol Foundation in 1990, she again returned to reside on the small Pacific island of Pohnpei, and at which time she discovered that a recent brush fire had exposed hundreds of previously undocumented petroglyphs carved on gigantic boulders. This portion of the overgrown megalithic site called Pohnpaid was unknown even to Pohnpei's state historic preservation officer. The petroglyphs were unlike others from Oceania, so Nervig began investigating and comparing them with petroglyphs and symbols from around the world as evidence of a universal Mother Culture.

This is the critical question that my ever-so poised and very wise friend, Min J Hwang and I unpack in this episode. Min, a Christian Home Ed mum of 4 based in New York, is much respected for her in-depth knowledge of Charlotte Mason's methods, coupled with her passion for helping Home-Ed mums chart their own life-giving, gospel based motherhood journeys. Drawing from Charlotte Mason's call for mothers to take time to play, rest and partner with the Holy Spirit in educating their children, Min offers us a beautiful, gospel-anchored, daily rhythm that glistens with balance and peace. Our conversation covers a wide variety of topics including: Mother Culture vs Mother nurture Parental authority Discipline and accountability The way of the will and habit formation Min's rituals for nurturing a life-giving Motherhood Lastly, interwoven throughout this episode is Min's heartwarming personal story into motherhood, home schooling, mission work and women's ministry. Whether you are a Christian or not, a home-edder or not, it's arguably impossible to listen to this episode without feeling inspired or convicted by this amazing woman's devotion in her service to mothers, families and women, in general. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ You can find more information and a detailed list of tips from this episode and my previous blog on similar theme (Episode 3) on the corresponding blog here: https://homegrownsonshine.co.uk/blog/ As always, I would love to hear your thoughts. Hey sister! Join us as we share our thoughts on "mother culture" today. Then in the next episodes, each of us will interview the other to give you details on how we engage in "mother culture" and "mother education," in order to equip ourselves to continue the Kingdom work our Father has "prepared in advance for us to do." (Ephesians 2:10) “There is no sadder sight in life than a mother, who has so used herself up in her children's childhood, that she has nothing to give them in their youth… Then, when her children come to that most difficult time between childhood and full development she is nonplussed; and, though she may do much for her children, she cannot do all she might, if she, as they, were growing! Is there not some need for "mother culture"? But how is the state of things to be altered? So many mothers say, "I simply have no time for myself!" "I never read a book!" Or else, "I don't think it is right to think of myself!" They not only starve their minds, but they do it deliberately, and with a sense of self-sacrifice which seems to supply ample justification. There are, moreover, unfortunately, only too many people who think that sort of thing so lovely that public opinion appears to justify it. But does public opinion justify anything?” - Mother Culture by A. (Parent's Review, Vol. 3, no. 2, 1892/93, pgs. 92-95) “If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children… we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play! If she would only have courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favourite book, or in a picture gallery… or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents. The mother would be able to hold herself in 'wise passiveness,' and would not fret her children by continual interference, even of hand or eye- she would let them be.” - Charlotte Mason What are your thoughts? She gave me a TON of resources below, so be sure to check them out to learn more, and listen to Jen to be encouraged that homeschooling is another great schooling option for a lot of families!   Enjoy a plethora of awesome resources and suggestions from Jen: Books: For the Children's Sake: Foundations of Education for Home and School - a great read if you're considering homeschooling. A Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal Reflections on the Gentle Art of Learning- explains the main ideas of Charlotte Mason's philosophy of education. Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler's Guide to Unshakeable Peace  The Well-Trained Mind - explains the classical method and gives practical guidance in how to do it. The Brave Learner: Finding Everyday Magic in Homeschool, Learning, and Life - talks about how to create an atmosphere that encourages and inspires a love of learning. Nature Anatomy - a beautiful example of how you could nature journal. Truth:78 resources - She is using the Sunday School workbook called To Be Like Jesus Top Two things that I have learned that all kids need (after Jesus, and no matter where they go to school) is exposure to nature and to quality books.  Nature: You need to get your kids out in nature regularly to play and explore and get dirty. They need to see rocks and trees and flowers up close in real life. They need to watch a bird flying and appreciate a trail of ants working hard. Nature journaling is a great habit to cultivate in your kids (and for yourself!)         Instagram: @maandpamodern,  @wildandfree.co,  @farmhouse_schoolhouse   Quality Books:  We used “Five in a Row” for kindergarten and first grade. It's a really fun way to introduce all the subjects using a different picture book each week. Instagram: @readaloudrevival, @amblesideonline  Other homeschool accounts I follow: @learningwell, @laced_with_grace_homeschool, @littlewomenfarmhouse, @charottemasonirl, @sally.clarkson,    Also, I forgot to mention "Habit Training," which is one of the Charlotte Mason ideas that I love. She gives great lists of lovely habits that children need to be lovingly instructed in. It really does help them in life if they have good habits. I also love that she encourages gentleness and patience in this training. And to work on one habit at a time. Charlotte Mason also believed in what she called "Mother Culture," which is time set aside for the mother to enrich herself, whether by reading a good book or learning a new skill. I really want to learn to use watercolors to paint nature, so that's on my list of things to do during my free time each day. I'm not that good at setting aside time for myself, but it's so important for our kids to see us continuing to learn and grow as people who have a variety of interests.   Connect with us on Mommispace! instagram: @mommispace email: mommispace@gmail.com If you like this podcast please share with your friends and be sure to leave us a Rating & Review on iTunes!
