The podcast is back, and Geoff is flying solo for the first time in 6 years. Thanks Vinod for everything you brought to the podcast. Geoff takes a look back at his 2024 round-the-world trip and other Canadian aviation experiences. Geoff checked the Island Hopper off his bucket list, travelling from Honolulu to Guam via the Marshall Islands and Micronesia. He forced a long layover in Honolulu to allow a visit to the city before heading out on the Island Hopper. The Island Hopper planes are old with some of the oldest Inflight Entertainment Systems Geoff has seen in years. Majuro airport and The Marshall Islands are in the middle of the Pacific on various atolls. This particular routing took Geoff via Kwajalein (no pictures at this stop!), Pohnpei and Chuuk (you can get passport stamps in Micronesia even if you are in transit) before landing in Guam. Geoff is a much bigger fan of the south side of Guam than the north side. Geoff took one of the last flights with United from Guam to Fukuoka. If you're flying to FUK, take the time to enjoy the observation deck. He then headed to Osaka via Hiroshima with the Shinkansen. Flight boarding in Japan is super efficient, and Geoff tried it first domestically from Osaka-Itami to Tokyo-Haneda. After spending time in Tokyo, Geoff flew onward to Copenhagen via Singapore. There is a wonderful 7-11 after security airside at Haneda that sells all sorts of Japanese treats. The Jewel in Singapore is lovely but is super busy on a summer Saturday night. A beach layover in Copenhagen is possible with a quick metro journey. Geoff enjoyed his first ever fifth freedom flight from Frankfurt to New York JFK on Singapore Airlines. If you're liking this episode experience, you may also enjoy Experience 2. "International Megahubs and Flight Ticketing." It's available wherever you listen to your podcasts. Geoff had some interesting domestic experiences in the second half of 2024. A widebody flight on a route not normally served by that plane, and subsequent upgrades. And then there was a massive storm system and hailstorm chaos in Calgary. Geoff also visited Canada's easternmost international airport in St. John's. And to build his knowledge, Geoff is now a successful student with distinction for IATA's training course on passenger fares and ticketing. Paul Watson realised he would never play football for England - so attempted, instead, to be recruited by the worst international team in the world. His quest lead him to Pohnpei, Micronesia; and, although he never realised his dream of becoming an international soccer star, he ended up coaching them instead...  What's it like training a team 9000 miles away from home, in a country with no football culture? What is the beautiful game's secret at bringing communities together? And how can one recover after a defeat against the Guam Crushers? rWotD Episode 2422: Typhoon Nanmadol (2004) Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Thursday, 21 December 2023 is Typhoon Nanmadol (2004).Typhoon Nanmadol, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Yoyong, was the last of four consecutive tropical cyclones to strike the Philippines in 2004. A quickly moving system, Nanmadol brought heavy rainfall and strong winds over the same regions impacted by the previous storms, exacerbating flood conditions in Luzon and surrounding regions. Together Nanmadol and these systems accounted for around 1,000 deaths in the Philippines. The typhoon later became the first December tropical cyclone to strike Taiwan since record keeping began, bringing along with it heavy rain, which also affected nearby regions of eastern China. As an extratropical storm, Nanmadol brought gusty winds and rain to Japan.Nanmadol developed from an isolated area of convection south-southwest of Pohnpei that became classified as a tropical depression on November 28. Within highly conducive conditions for development, the system reached tropical storm intensity the following day, followed by typhoon intensity on November 30. Quickly pacing towards the north-northwest about the periphery of a nearby subtropical ridge, Nanmadol reached its peak intensity on December 1 with winds of 165 km/h (103 mph) and a minimum barometric pressure of 935 mbar (hPa; 27.61 inHg). Shortly after, the typhoon made landfall at a similar intensity on Casiguran, Aurora, quickly moving over Luzon before reaching the South China Sea, where it recurved northward into hostile atmospheric conditions. Over the next few days, Nanmadol weakened and later transitioned into an extratropical cyclone near Taiwan on December 4, whereafter it merged with another extratropical system. With the typhoon approaching landfall in an area still recovering from previous storms, relief agencies already servicing the region were forced to allocate additional resources to prepare for Nanmadol. Evacuation efforts assisted in moving almost 100,000 people into shelters. Effects from Nanmadol were most severe in Cagayan Valley, where 14 people were killed. Power outages were widespread across several islands. Overall, damage from the typhoon in the Philippines totaled ₱2.23 billion (US$39.3 million). Heavy rainfall, peaking at 1,090 mm (43 in), was documented in Taiwan. Agricultural damage in Taiwan alone reached NT$670 million (US$20.8 million). Similar effects were felt in Japan, where the remnants of Nanmadol produced record-breaking rainfall and wind. Damage was particularly significant in Aichi Prefecture, totaling JP¥69.8 million (US$680,000). Overall, Nanmadol resulted in 77 fatalities and US$60.8 million in damage across three countries. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:46 UTC on Thursday, 21 December 2023.For the full current version of the article, see Typhoon Nanmadol (2004) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Niamh Neural.

As World War II loomed in the Central Pacific, the islands of Micronesia served as strategic battlefields between Axis and Allied forces. But how did these isles transform so quickly from war-ravaged lands to sacred temple grounds? The prophet Jacob foretold, “Great are the promises of the Lord unto them who are upon the isles of the sea” (2 Nephi 10:21). In this episode, BYU Religious Studies Center executive editor R. Devan Jensen discusses his recent book Battlefields to Temple Grounds: Latter-day Saints in Guam and Micronesia, coedited by Rosalind Meno Ram. Although I hate the fact that we celebrate certain cultures only during certain months, I acknowledge that so much of the country sees diverse Americans as adjuncts, and with no group is that as profound as with Pacific Islanders. Admittedly, it is the group of Americans that I know least about, so I'm excited to learn, and to share my new knowledge with you. As I talk with educator Kecia McDonald, I realize how little I know about our nation's 50th state. Let's start with the most famous word, Aloha. So much more than a salutation, the Aloha Spirit brings each person to the self and is the foundation for projecting positive feelings to others. Starting with the word Aloha, one can immediately see that what most Mainlanders know about Hawaii has been reduced to eliminate a depth, beauty and almost hallowedness that seems to flow throughout the island--if you're looking closely enough. My next big line of inquiry--as a person of color--has been, "who are all the brown people?" So much diversity! Resisting the urge to run up to people asking, "what are you" (CRINGE), I could luckily rely on my friend Kecia to learn more about our nation's #1 most diverse county. What fun it was learning names of cultural groups I have never encountered. Polynesian peoples from Enewetak, Bikini, Rongelap, Kwajalein, Majuro, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae enrich the culture of the Hawaiian islands. For me, learning these new words, a few new (for me) cultural hallmarks and traditions, as well as geography and migration stories has been an incredible way to spend time and further anchor my work. As you listen, here are some resources to deepen your knowledge and to help you, your families and your students build cultural literacy, especially around the PI in AAPI.

Original Politico ArticleThis former ally and campaign CYA person for Senator John McCain, now saying how much of a slime McCain was and even sliming his family in his diatribe I found very funny. As ALL of these RINOs have been exposed for the frauds they always were, by the master of RINO exposers our former President Trump who ran for office to change the status quo. Resulting in destroying the RINO GOP establishment, and exposing the demoncrats and the MSM for the slime they always were.I have my own experience with John McCain, which goes way back to me teaching Chemistry at the College of Micronesia on the Island of Pohnpei, where we were told that Senator McCain's wife Cindy and one of his sons were visiting the island of Pohnpei, and we invited them to come over to our home for dinner, where we had spaghetti and I thought a nice visit, where she told us about her charities and visit to the islands, and enjoyed her son, who got along with our 2 sons. We thought it was a nice visit too, as Carol kept in touch with her via letters for a few years afterwards.Well, a couple of years later we landed in Hilo, where I decided to run for the Republican Nomination for US Senate to unseat Senator Inouye, a very liberal, pro-abortion (even partial birth) partisan hack, who pretended to represent the people of Hawaii, where his political positions ended up helping destroy the Hawaii Sugar Industry. (Some materials from that campaign, and others are on this space) I even ran full page ads in the Washington Times National Weekly Edition to try and raise money for the campaign. Well, I heard that my campaign got noticed by McCain and McCain (supposedly a conservative Republican) decided to defend his fellow veteran friend against my political attacks. Well, that was very funny to me, because I was campaigning on principle and did not have to win to make my points, just get in there and leave the rest for others and God to decide. In the years since, I was and still very proud of the fact that McCain thought I was an arrogant A**hole for publicly attacking his friend. When I heard of Steve Schmidt's epiphany, particularly after he spent years shilling for his “friend” McCain, I laughed. Particularly with the role Senator McCain had in distributing the Steele Dossier, and pushing the Russia Hoaxes from the RINO side. This interview is wonderful evidence of the slime that still infects the Never Trumpers, Neocons, and other RINOs that infect the GOP to this day. This post is another of my efforts to expose this. Please share this essay and audio interview. The guy, along with Nicolle Wallace are pathological liars, who have exposed themselves as the frauds and their danger to the Republican Party as a whole. Please subscribe and support my work, so I can do a small part to continue the valiant effort to ask more of Republican leaders, who wholeheartedly support our Prolife Platform and all the other features that stand us apart from the Demoncrat party, that thinks nothing of killing unborn babies, to suit their selfish purposes. My attacks on Senator Inouye in 1998, that got his friend Senator John McCain upset with me…… It is also funny, after his good friend Rep Patsy Mink died in September of 2002, as my wife Carol had run against Patsy Mink in the 1998 General Election for Hawaii District #2 of the US Congress, we wrote him a letter of condolence for the death of his friend. I was surprised to get a letter in response from him, admitted that I was correct regarding his political efforts on the mainland, that helped destroy the Hawaii sugar industry. The campaign document I wrote about that issue, for 1998 and 2000.Thank you for reading Battle of the Titans - Good Vs Evil, Christianity, Education. Today Dr Karen Osborne joins us to answer all our important questions on our deep oceans, what they're made up of, what it's like to study them and what it's like to live with a whale.  Expert guest: Dr. Karen Osborn is an award-winning zoologist at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. She specialises in the fascinating world of animals that live in the deep ocean but above the sea floor. She grew up loving animals and chose marine biology after spending a year in Pohnpei, Micronesia. She was SCUBA diving every chance she got on the lush coral reefs that surround the tropical Pacific island. Seeing the huge variety of shapes and sizes of animals that make up the reef communities made her wonder how and why that much diversity of shape came about. How do all those different animals accomplish basically the same thing - survival and reproduction - with such different bodies and ways of living? You can learn more about her and her work here. He spent the last 5 years living in Iceland were he worked at Eurovision, won a bunch of awards and was pretty much a C-list celeb. Jono has his own podcasts as well, 'Not in Front of my Salad' and ‘Icetralia'. He's probably done enough things to warrant a Wikipedia page but nobody who is a fan of his work loves him enough to make one. Plants have provided human beings with nourishment, medicine, fibers, and other resources for millennia. And, the passing of botanical knowledge through generations not only ensured survival, it shaped how cultures understood their world. Occasionally, this knowledge would be exchanged with neighboring people in the forms of stories, rituals, and daily practices. In the 1800’s Western anthropologists studying indigenous cultures began to categorize this relationship between plants and people as a new science called, ethnobotany, “ethno” meaning people and “botany” meaning plants. Over the last 200 years the field has evolved to include ethnomedicine and most recently it’s application in modern pharmaceuticals. But, how is it that centuries ago societies without modern laboratory equipment learned how to use botanicals with such precise applications and outcomes? To understand this, we welcome Dr. Michael Balick, ethnobotanist, and Vice President and Director of the Institute of Economic Botany at the New York Botanical Gardens. For more than four decades, Dr. Balick has studied the relationship between plants and people. Most of his research is in remote regions of the tropics, like Micronesia, on the islands of Pohnpei, Kosrae, Palau and Melanesia, in the Republic of Vanuatu where he works with indigenous cultures to document plant diversity, knowledge of its traditional use and evaluation of the potential of botanical resources, particularly medicinal plants, for broader application and use. Dr. Weil, Dr. Maizes, and Dr. Balick discuss why it's so important to understand ethnobotany in modern society, the benefits of “whole-plant” traditional medicines, and how ethnobotanists are working with indigenous elders to preserve cultural practices and ancient knowledge.

On June 9th, 2016 the Hermetic Hour with Host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the secret meaning behind Abraham Merritt's classic Fantasy novel “The Moon Pool.” (1919). This Lost Race fantasy adventure story, similar to Rider Haggard's “She”was very influential on other fantasy writers, movie makers and comic book writers and artists. It was one of the major sources of the 1940s “Shaver Mystery”. Moon Pool is based on the idea that the Moon was pulled out of the Earth half a billion years ago when our young world was in a molten state, leaving a huge cavity in the area of the Central Pacific, which sealed itself over and eventually became a vast air filled cavern under the ocean. A subterranean world with its own flora, fauna and people. Its only connection to the surface world is the ancient ruined stone city of Nan Madol on Pohnpei island in the Central Pacific Ocean. In these haunted ruins is a mysterious doorway that only opens when the Moon is full, revealing The Moon Pool from which rises a fantastic alien being that resembles an animated and illuminated kabbalistic Tree of Life. It is called “The Dweller” or “The Shining One” – a beautiful, alluring vampiric creature that stalks human prey, harvesting and feeding on their souls. The Dweller or Shining One is worshiped as a god by a faction of the Murians, who are as evil as their deity and are plotting to conquer the surface world. Into this setting come a group of adventurers from our world – so we can have a hero and a heroine to save both worlds ( love conquers all) -- and someone to tell the story. That, as the Irish say, is the gist of it. But there is a lot more behind the scenes in Moon Pool than just a good story. So If you want to learn the horrible secret of the Shining One then tune in and listen as we open the door to The Moon Pool.
