Today, I am blessed to have here with me The Meat Mafia. The Meat Mafia officially began in January 2022 with one mission: to share their wealth of practical experiences in transforming their health through an active, animal-based lifestyle. Animal-based living emphasizes the elimination of processed foods and the consumption of whole natural foods. As the name suggests, most of these foods come from animal sources, from beef to honey. In their belief, locally sourced animal-based foods optimize personal and planetary health. In this episode, The Meat Mafia speak about their health issues and how eating a carnivore diet helped Brett reverse his ulcerative colitis and improved Harrison's inflammatory skin problems. Then, the guys jump straight into stigmas around eating an animal-based diet and how the health of our environment actually depends on regenerative agriculture and ruminating animals. Tune in as we chat about finding the best sources for your animal-based diet and what you need to know about buying meat from the grocery store. Colitis is an autoimmune disease that affects your large intestine, which is your colon. You can't really process any food with ulcerative colitis. Doctors tell you that colitis is an incurable disease. After listening to Dr. Shawn Baker on Joe Rogan's podcast, Brett changed his life forever. Listen to the episode here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2auwtVto0sG7OcZ0hs3aOP?si=VF4iKaIcRvS_gar_nJrZ1g. Brett experimented with the carnivore diet, and he noticed all the bloating in his stomach was gone, his skin cleared up, and his energy improved. [15:10] A Keto Lifestyle Can Reduce Symptoms of Inflammatory Skin Problems Harrison's first interaction with the healthcare system was from skin problems. His cystic acne had everything to do with his terrible diet. Ultimately, Harrison got on Accutane. Harrison tried the paleo diet during his first year of college, and his athletic training and energy levels improved. After trying keto, Harrison lost ten pounds in a matter of weeks. [29:10] The Health Grasslands and The Health of Ruminate Animals Are Interconnected There are still stigmas around red meat being a staple of healthy nutritional diets. Also, people don't discuss animals' role in restoring soil quality. Anti-meat people will gravitate toward the harmful practices of agriculture. However, there are ways to raise animals that improve the soil. The Meat Mafia likes to go to farms and learn stories about practicing regenerative agriculture. Check out Roam Ranch as an example: http://roamranch.com/ [34:20] Find A Local Farmer's Market To Support The Best System Possible Here are some resources to check out about local food sources: Wild Food Sources: https://www.wildfoods.co/ Shire: https://shireapp.io/ Beef Initiative Food Intelligence Summit: https://beefinitiative.com/ Find a farmer's market in your area and ask if they utilize regenerative practices. When you support local farmers, you're supporting the right system, and you can nourish your family with the best quality protein possible. [40:55] Health Is Not An Expense; Health Is An Investment If you can't afford meat from a local farmer, you can still eat the meat at a grocery store. Always do what is best for you and your budget. Eating stuff in the grocery store's outer aisle will make you healthier than 99% of the population. However, supporting local farms is healthier for the supply chain and you. When you nourish the body with the proper nutrients, it will be an investment in your health. [43:05] What To Know About Shopping For Meat In The Grocery Store You need your beef to be pasture raised and 100% grass-fed. When you look at chicken and pork, they are fed corn and soy diets. If possible, steer towards a beef-based diet. Also, make sure your eggs are pasture-raised. Be careful about the marketing tricks that companies use. They could write “vegetarian fed.” In reality, that means they are being fed corn and soy. AND MUCH MORE! Want to have your mind absolutely blown? Tune in to hear us interview Kate Kavanaugh, farmer, butcher, nutritionist, and overall badass! We heard Kate speak at the What Good Shall I Do Conference out at Roam Ranch and have had a total intellectual crush on her ever since.    In this episode, we discuss why death is an essential part of the life cycle and how there is no such thing as a deathless diet. Kate describes in beautiful detail why we literally are what we eat and connects the dots between the microorganisms and minerals in our soil, the amino acids in meat, and the way that these nourish our bodies and connect us to a world much greater than ourselves.    About Kate Kavanaugh: Kate Kavanaugh is a farmer, butcher, nutrition therapist, and host of the Mind, Body, and Soil Podcast. She saw first hand the power of meat to heal her own body and in seeking out farmers and ranchers raising meat with holistic practices, she found the power of meat to heal land, too. In 2013, she opened Western Daughters Butcher Shop in Denver, Colorado. Kate is now host of the Mind, Body, and Soil podcast where she is devoted to digging in deep with guests, finding the threads of what it means to be humans woven into this earth. In her spare time, Kate raises goats, pigs, cows, and poultry on a small farm in upstate New York.   Also in this episode: Live Keto Class Starts 9/6 - Sign Up now Kate's Story Why death is an essential part of the life cycle Why veganism is not a deathless diet How we become what we eat Methionine & Glycine Eating Organs Episode 350 What the BLEEP is Going on in our Food System Where plants fit into the optimal diet Where to start your nose to tail journey Where to find more about Kate:Groundworkcollective.com   Westerndaughters.com @kate_kavanaugh Mind Body & Soil Podcast This episode is sponsored by: Noble Origins, an animal-based organs focused company serving up Nose-To-Tail Protein With Organs, Collagen, & Colostrum. Austin Dillon owns and operates his farm Counter Culture Farms in Nacogdoches, Texas. We first came across Austin at the What Good Shall I Do conference at Roam Ranch, and his message stunned, not only us but everyone in the room. He had our attention. What we heard from Austin that day was a young man with conviction, purpose, and a mission. He spoke about the process of regenerating his land for the last 15 years, and the real difference between plant-based agriculture and animal-based agriculture. Austin then dove deep into the connection between death and life. He explained the process of handling & experiencing death, saying: "Death is so negative in our minds, but it's just another cultivator for life in nature". When he said this, the entire room stood still. What a perfect articulation of the beautiful balance between life and death. There is not one without the other. Once we heard, Austin speak at the What Good Shall I Do Conference in April, it was clear that we needed to get him on the show. In the winter of 2022, I had the pleasure of visiting Roam Ranch to attend a Bison Harvest. On that day, I met Taylor and Katie, and quickly became intrigued by their story of what brought them to Fredericksburg, Texas, to start (of all things) a Bison Ranch. The story begins with Taylor and Katie competing as competitive vegan endurance athletes and evolves from there. Within a short period, Taylor and Katie ran into serious health concerns and, based on a recommendation from a doctor, started eating meat. Their health troubles quickly went away, but new problems presented themselves. The couple had grown so aligned with their vegan identity they had started a successful vegan food company. If their community heard the news of them switching to eating meat, they'd be crushed. Taylor and Katie knew what they needed to do and the rest, as they say, is history. Here's what we covered in this episode:Converting from a vegan to an animal-based dietDeciding to sell to General Mills and start Force of NatureCreating a food system for optimal human and planet healthBuilding a legacy of land stewardship by sharing the message of regenerative agricultureLaunching his new podcast at Force of Nature called “Where Hope Grows”SPONSORS:Optimal Carnivore: Use the code "MEATMAFIA" to save 10% on all productsLiver is hard to come by and the quality, taste, and convenience make it challenging for most people to source properly. Imagine a healthy ecosystem where there's everything from your livestock, to the ground-nesting birds to the field mice, the snakes, the insects, and the life within the soil. With regenerative agriculture, it serves all those communities in a way that creates a net positive return. But what is regenerative agriculture and how does it positively impact our health and the environment?  In today's episode, we welcome Taylor Collins, co-founder of Epic Provisions, the world's first 100% grass-fed meat, fruit, and nut bar. About a year after Taylor, and his wife, sold Epic Provisions to General Mills in 2016, they purchased Roam Ranch, a 900-acre land in central Texas. There they continually raise their 100% grass-fed livestock – in an environment where animals have the ability to roam freely.  Taylor explains how they bought the land at its worst condition and used animal impact to restore and return it to its previous biological potential – a clear testament of Mother Nature's capacity for forgiveness, which is greater than our own species' capacity for destruction. Taylor and Katie are also active in helping grow regenerative supply chains at their new parent company Force of Nature. Today, we talk about regenerative agriculture and our hope for the future of this planet because of regenerative agriculture, and because of the work of people like Taylor and his wife, Katie.  In this episode, you will hear: The benefits of regenerative agriculture and what the system looks like The time and work it took to build Roam Ranch The connection between our own health and the health of the land The consistent reuse of soil in regenerative agriculture practice The principles of regenerative agriculture Why there's no such thing as plant-based regenerative systems Why becoming vegan is the worst thing you can do if you really care about animals Subscribe and Review Have you subscribed to our podcast? Use code "JOSH" for 10% off your first order Force of Nature is on a mission to improve our environment and health through regenerative agriculture while answering the community's call for food raised in a way that truly aligns with their values. The term “regenerative” means that the agriculture systems in which this food was raised honor the systems within Mother Nature. We care for the soil, respect diversity in plants and animals on the land, and focus on natural outcomes versus synthetic inputs. That means no tilling, no synthetic chemicals, no hormones or antibiotics, and beautiful, wide-open spaces. The result is what you expect. Disrupting the Big Food Industry We spent the last decade studying regenerative agriculture at ranches all over the world before we answered the community's call to launch Force of Nature. Never before has a company founded on the principles of regenerative agriculture, curated a vast collection of land stewards, ranchers, and farmers who are committed to creating a positive return on the planet. Our mission is to accelerate the creation of a global regenerative supply network, to justify our supplier partners' efforts on the land, and to offer consumers the awareness and the ability to vote for a system that aligns with their values. By reclaiming the legacy of meat, we will benefit all stakeholders of the planet and restore regenerative principles to their rightful place as the keystone to our agricultural system. Regenerative Farming is Better Meat that is more delicious and nutritious than anything else you can buy, including organic and traditional grass fed. Animals that are raised with honor in their respected natural environments, eating foods they are supposed to eat. A quality of life for ranchers and their communities that has been lacking for decades in the conventional system. Power Quotes From The Show Omnivorous Truth: Starving with Our Bellings Full "As a culture, as a species, we are starving with our bellies full. We are seeing plummeting fertility rates, chronic diseases, obesity, and children are dying. That is why we should all be caring and having this conversation that looks directly back at our food and the land on which everything is dependent upon." - Taylor Collins Revealing Food Industry Lies "Big Food, Big Agriculture, Big Oil, Big Chemical, and Big Pharma are all tied together in our food system and they support the left side party, the right side party, and all that flow of money says, 'Don't mess up this machine.' If you look at what's going on with social media and the internet as they try to censor conversations, we need consumers to break out of their mold and become independent thinkers to stop allowing themselves to perpetuate the myths and the lies that they have been fed for years and to look at what's really happening in the food industry. A value meal at Chic-fil-A is more expensive than buying regenerative protein and whole vegetables to make a meal together as a family." - Robby Sansom Healing with Regenerative Ranching "If my wife was still vegan today she would either be dead or in a wheelchair. We ditched the vegan diet and began to eat in an evolutionary consistent manner. Within days, years of symptoms we had just went away." - Taylor Collins Links From Today's Show  Taylor Collins Robby Sansom Where Hope Grows Podcast EPIC Provisions: How This Husband + Wife Went From Being Vegan To Starting A Meat-Based Snack Brand These Founders Sold Their Food Company for a Reported $100 Million. Started by first generation farmers, Katie and Taylor's journey into ranching was based on a vision to positively impact large-scale agriculture through producing nourishing food that improves the lives of animals, enriches the health of consumers, and regenerates the land on which we depend. Like much of the world, this once-fertile region has been industrially farmed for the past 100 years. Through persistent tilling of soil, planting of monoculture row crops, and overgrazing, ROAM Ranch was not capable of producing food upon its purchase. Land in this condition is often deemed "unsalvageable" and in many circumstances further degenerates with rest- but we are going to prove otherwise. Force of Nature Meats partners with regenerative ranchers to bring you the best meat on the planet, for the planet.  With the intention to accelerate the creation of a global regenerative supply network. Never before has a company founded in the principles of regenerative agriculture curated a vast collection of land stewards, ranchers, and farmers who are committed to creating a positive return on the planet. Force of Nature now exists to give consumers the ability to vote for environmental regeneration by consuming meat that is actually good for the planet.

On this inspiring episode of Where Hope Grows we travel to the famous Bamberger Ranch Preserve to explore the gift of water. Over 50 years ago this landscape was a degraded cedar monoculture with a shattered water cycle. Through a seemingly impossible vision of restoring this landscape, a first generation land steward named J David Bamberger looked into Mother Nature for wisdom, guidance, and grace. What happened next was beyond his wildest dreams and lead towards reshaping conservation practices in much of the Southwest United States. This story is about hope, nature's capacity for forgiveness, and about creating water from stone. This podcast is made possible by the support of Force of Nature. Learn more about ROAM Ranch.

After selling Epic in 2019, the pair dove into regenerative farming, developing Roam Ranch and Force of Nature.  Collins and Sansom discuss the important role biodiversity plays in an agricultural setting and the power of working with wildlife instead of against it. They discuss how the soil impacts their products, how meat quality can change with regenerative farming versus conventional farming, and the importance of reintroducing bison to its natural habitat in the Americas and their impact on biodiversity. First up, with their publication Modern Hunstman, Brad and Tyler are working to change the image of hunters we're accustomed to and raise awareness about the role the hunting community plays in conservation, land stewardship, and animal welfare.  As someone who didn't grow up hunting, and can count all my hunting experiences on a single hand, I truly believe this episode will be just as interesting for the non-hunter as it is for the seasoned hunter. Brad and Tyler share how they're challenging many of the common misconceptions about hunting, we discuss how the hunting community's response to the work they're doing, and they shed light on the role hunters play in conservation and land management and what we can do to support them, whether or not we ever want to hunt ourselves.   As promised, for this week's INSIDE EPIC, we dive deep on our newest product, the EPIC Performance Bar!  There's a link below to read more about it in our show notes, but tune in here and hear from our co-founder Taylor, our guard dogs Carnage & Savage, and the chickens of Roam Ranch.  They'll explain why EPIC is so excited about this product launch, why you should be too, and answer some common questions we think yall may have! Finally I'll tell you how you can win some free Performance Bars for yourself and a friend! LINKS: Modern Huntsman Introducing the EPIC Performance Bar

MTV Celebrity Women's Health “Next Fitness Star” CrossFit Competitor/Coach Nutritional Therapist Thriving Entrepreneur The titles all describe, but cannot even begin to define this week's guest, Emily Schromm.  Imagine not being comfortable in your own skin and then having all those vulnerabilities aired on national TV for millions to see.  Many would, and have, crumbled after such an experience, but Emily used it to not just change her life, but change the lives of thousands of others.  She is now the owner of a booming coaching business, founded a tea company, getting ready to open a gym in Denver, and her recent Kickstarter was funded within hours of launching.   During today's conversation, Emily and I discuss... How a chance meeting at Starbucks led to MTV's The Real World and propelled her into her current journey The most common issues she sees as as nutritional therapy coach -- fat digestion, skin/gut issues, etc. Her go-to supplements to support her challenging lifestyle as an entrepreneur Launching the next evolution of her wildly successful Empack sandbag/backpack For this week's INSIDE EPIC, I preview EPIC's First Annual Impact Summit being held at Roam Ranch.  Lastly, I read a review from one of our listeners and explain how 5 of yall can win a meatcast shirt this week!

This week we talk to Jason Wachob, CEO and founder of MindBodyGreen, a wellness company with 10 million monthly visitors to its website.  We hear the term “wellness” often today, frequently in the context of physical health, but MindBodyGreen was an early pioneer in shaping wellness through the lens of physical, mental, and environmental health.  More importantly, they've had incredible success taking these ideas into the mainstream and “building a bigger church” vs. “preaching to the choir”. Walking that fine line is where EPIC sits now, so I was excited to talk to Jason and see what we could learn from MindBodyGreen's journey.  During our conversation, Jason and I touch on... How a college basketball player goes from selling organic cookies to launching one of the most popular websites on the internet The challenge of hosting diverse content for a variety of audiences (vegans, paleo, keto, intermittent fasting, etc) Why Jason decided to launch an invite-only conference where entertainers, educators, athletes, and authors have an opportunity to interact What are the wellness practices for the founder of a wellness company? For this week's INSIDE EPIC we talk to Steve Rosenzweig, a soil scientist recently hired by General Mills.  Wait, what? Why is a soil scientist working at General Mills? I had the same question! Steve and I recorded this interview when he came out to Roam Ranch in February as one of its first visitors.  We spent the day sharing the perch seat on a mule together, ducking tree branches and holding on for our lives. Tune in and hear what the heck a soil scientist is doing at General Mills. As always, we finish by sharing how you can win some meatcast swag and give you a fresh update on the battle between the Meatcast and my neighborhood pool.

Meatcasters! This week we head to the islands of Hawaii to chat with professional hunter Jake Muse.  While Jake does make his living hunting animals, its not for sport.  Jake and his teams are hired to help manage wild animal populations throughout Hawaii and during our conversation we discuss… How parts of Hawaii have become overrun by wild animal populations  Hunting for sport vs. hunting to survive The innovative techniques he and his team use to humanely hunt and harvest animals in the wild The Kahukinui Project, and how hunting thousands of animals  will save a community and restore their watersheds and forests.    If you're a fan of hunting, I think this episode will give you an incredible appreciation for what Jake and his team do and even if you're not a fan of hunting, I think our conversation will give you a fascinating glimpse into communities that are still doing it today out of necessity and survival. For this week's INSIDE EPIC we talk to Roam Ranch Manager, Zach Peoples. For those not familiar, Roam Ranch is a 450 acre property in Fredericksburg, TX that the EPIC founders purchased in 2017, with the dream of making it a regenerative farm where the mission and values of EPIC can come to life. Zach is responsible for shepherding that dream and has his own interesting story, of how a 26 year old who had never seen a Bison in his life, is now managing a regenerative farm with 70 bison! Finally, we want to get to know more about your Meatcasting habits, and we'll reward you for telling us!

Today on the Meatcast, we welcome our first vegetarian guest, author of Defending Beef, Nicolette Hahn Niman.  You read right, she's a vegetarian, Defending Beef consumption. Nicolette's unique story and experience have made her a best-selling author and a renowned advocate for regenerative agriculture, with her writing featured in publications such as the Wall Street Journal and the NY Times.   Here's a small sample of what Nicolette and I cover during our conversation How a vegetarian ends up becoming an advocate for cattle ranchers, and why she's chosen to remain a vegetarian Why it's important to understand that beef isn't bad for our health Debunking the most common myths around beef production and its harm on the environment For this week's Inside EPIC we take yall to EPIC's Roam Ranch, as EPIC's fiercest outdoorsmen lead our sales team on a hunt for Axis Deer.  Trekking through thick brush before dawn, hoping to hunt and harvest a deer we'd all share for lunch that same day; not your typical Sales Team meeting.  Afterward, Katie and Taylor give us a tour of the ranch and lay out their vision for its future.  The work happening on this ranch is literally the EPIC mission coming to life, so we're incredibly excited to share this with you and hope it's the first of many Meatcasts featuring a peek inside Roam Ranch.
