A look back on the episodes about the Incas and the Toltecs, including a discussion on the role of AI in history contact such as this podcast and the usual look back at listener correspondence, and news from behind the scenes of the podcast itself.
950 - 1150 - Sophisticated and enigmatic, the Toltecs dominated their locality with their art, architecture and mythology. Their warrior culture inspired and was admired by the Aztecs, who claimed their own ancestry from the Toltecs.
In today's podcast, I focus on examples of loss of liberty. The first is JS Bach being imprisoned for having the effrontery of asking his employer to let him go so he could seek a more lucrative employment elsewhere. It's shocking that one of the world's greatest musicians was considered to be property. Of course NO ONE should be considered to be property! A friend of his, a mere horn player, was hung for a similar infraction.120 years later, Chopin spent a honeymoon on the island of Majorca with his new wife, George Sand. Both of them were combining a honeymoon with holding good on promises to publishers—she on a book in progress and he on a collection of 24 preludes. They spent several months living in a scary monastery high in the mountains partly because Chopin was suffering from TB, which the locals interpreted as an example of how sin leads to disease, the result being a loss of liberty for Chopin and Sand. The third example of loss of liberty deals with how cacao symbolized power in the four Central American societies—of the Olmecs, the Toltecs, the Mayans and the Aztecs. Later, when Cortez brought cacao back to Spain, it came to symbolize power there as well with a loss of liberty for the Jewish doctors living in Bayonne, France, where they established cacao as an important local industry. During the Industrial Revolution, cacao became an important foodstuff for factory workers and in order to provide it, the colonial powers forced West Africans to provide them with inexpensive beans. The result was the use of child labor, five forms of which are described.I start the podcast with Bach's Prelude number 8 in E-Flat Minor and I finish with Chopin's Prelude #14 in the same key. Bach's prelude was written in a prison cell. Chopin's was written in a monastery cell. Both are examples of a loss of liberty. As always, we are looking to help African cocoa farmers become African chocolate makers. Join the revolution by donating to the cause!1. Modern society has conditioned us to ignore our primal instincts—intuition, connection to nature, and inner knowing.
"A well-governed appetite is a great part of liberty." - Seneca In This Episode, We Get Stoic About: It is a foundational principal of Stoicism that true freedom lies not in the absence of external constraints but in the mastery of oneself. This concept wasn't limited to the Western world. In fact, the Toltecs, a Mesoamerican culture that dominated what is modern day Mexico 400 years before Columbus, had a similar philosophy. We dig into it on today's podcast…. Takeaways True freedom lies in the mastery of ourselves, not in the absence of external constraints. Self-control is the antidote to the constraints that enslave us. Various cultures and philosophies, including Stoicism, the Toltecs, and the Japanese samurai, have emphasized the importance of self-control. Reflecting on what is enslaving us and practicing self-control can lead to true freedom and fulfillment. Until Next Time…out of role!
In this episode we dip our dainty little toes back in the murky waters of Prosperity Gospel with a look at one of the most despicable human beings to have ever lived.Originally known as Olórin, he was the wisest Maiar of Valinor and chosen as one of the five Istari to assume human form in the Third Age of Middle Earth and counsel Men, Elves, and Dwarves in their struggle with Sauron. The unexamined life is not worth living — SocratesIt seems natural, even innate, to want to make the most of one's life. To have a good life seems to require examination. Examining one's life, growing, and continuing to be aware is part of our purpose. The purpose of life has two branches. The first is the ecological purpose and the second is more metaphysical. The ecological purpose of life is to reproduce to alleviate mortality. In other words, because all life dies, life reproduces itself. In this way, collective life persists despite the individual being terminal.Evolution and natural selection, especially of the central nervous system, have facilitated communication, social interaction, and parental care. Humans still struggle with how to manage this complexity. What is less derived is our metaphysical or non-scientific understanding of being human or of making a good life. Sure, we figured out how to keep the water (fairly) clean, eat, and build shelter, but how do we deal with our free time? What do we do with all the gains from understanding our physical needs?Once our basic needs are met, what do we do? First, we evolve a complex neurology that facilitates taking in more information from our environment. To process all this new information we also evolve a central processing unit. Combined, we developed unprecedented ways to interact with our environment, each other, and ourselves. At the intersection of the metaphysical and physical elements of human purpose is socialization. Sophisticated communication and interactions led to cooperation, community, and enhanced parental care. Ultimately, love evolved to enhance our connections to each other and our ecosystem. Neural complexity also led to art, medicine, science, and other technological derivations. Along the way, of course, less desirable states or conditions arose including violence, competition, and selfishness. These elements, ideally, will be selected out of our population (see here for more). The future of humankind depends on these metaphysical elements. Prioritizing values like love, connection, and kindness over money, power, and status is critical to our healthy future. The privileged and fortunate among us are self-aware. Self-awareness facilitates an examined life. An examined life will grow toward an enhanced and necessary value system understood through our neural gifts.Self-awareness permits the unlearning process. Don Miguel Ruiz, of “The Four Agreements” fame, and other Toltecs refer to domestication as the mechanism for our initial learnings. As children, we learn to walk, talk, sit, and stay according to the rules of our families, villages, and cultures. Few of us even realize this has happened. None of us consented.Once aware our life examination begins, and the first step is to realize we don't know why we believe what we believe. We must audit our thoughts, ideas, and values to determine whether they belong to us. This is the first step.Self-awareness begets the undoing of domestication. Defining personal values and understanding one's ecological and metaphysical needs defines a life. The next step is realizing we are interconnected to balance our individuality with our community. Finally, we figure out how to nudge our fellow humans in a similar direction.Understanding and meeting our own needs helps us as much as each other. This is the pathway toward a good life. We make it by doing the work, being ourselves, and nurturing awareness. If you are enjoying this content, please tell your friends.
Ok, I know, it sounds weird but hear me out. Humans are freaked out by death. I'm not saying I'm any different, just drawing attention to this in hopes of reducing our suffering. Today I'm wondering what life would be like if we could change our relationship with death. The Toltec civilization of Central America considered death an advisor like a friend who gives advice. In this way, Toltecs navigated their lives knowing they were temporary. It is a way to try and make the most of the time we have. Some modern cultures ask how you would live life differently if you knew you only had 6 months to live. I'm sure you've heard this approach at some point in your life. It's an interesting question. How would you live differently? My ecological background treats death as a normal part of life. Death is kind of the same as birth. It is a necessary occurrence for all living things. Things change through time, and part of that is death. Humans forget this. We don't talk about it. We pretend it isn't true. We try to use technology to make it false.Isn't that weird? At least in an ecological sense? What did our other animals do? What did our ancestors do? I love that question. I think as our minds and nervous systems became more sophisticated we developed a lot of emotions around death. Sadness. Grief. Regret. I think that our hardware evolved faster than our software. In other words, our awareness of our emotions lags behind our capacity to have them. Let's face it. Death is overwhelming. But can't we learn to incorporate death into our lives? Talk about it. Recognize it. Not overdramatize it so much. Can't we use death as a reminder to live our lives? If we can embrace our mortality, we may discover ways of dealing with our loved ones' deaths. Recognizing and talking about our mortality is a start. Ecology understands that all things are part of a larger system. Within this system, energy flows and nutrients cycle. Life and death are natural parts of that cycle. You can start at birth:birth->life->growth->reproduction->death->decomposition->nutrient recycling->repeatDeath is a part of a natural cycle. One we can't change. Isolation and alteration of any part of the system can upset everything. Modifying death can destroy the homeostasis within the biosphere. What would it be like with less fear and guilt and shame and drama? Would we be more connected and less separate? Can we take back all the energy we spend avoiding death and pretending it away? To do otherwise seems profane. I wish we talked more about death. I don't want to take away the grief and sadness. But maybe we could learn to reduce the guilt and regret. Maybe it would help to ask ourselves how we would live differently if we understood our time here is limited. The Mexican pyramids refer to the ancient pyramid complexes located in Mexico. These pyramids were constructed by various indigenous civilizations that thrived in what is now present-day Mexico. The two most well-known pyramid complexes in Mexico are Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza. Teotihuacan, located near Mexico City, was a significant pre-Columbian city during the Classic period. The Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon are the largest structures within this complex. These pyramids were constructed by the Teotihuacanos, a civilization whose identity and origins remain a subject of debate among researchers. Chichen Itza, located in the Yucatan Peninsula, was a major city of the Maya civilization. It flourished during the Terminal Classic period and was later influenced by the Toltecs. The most iconic pyramid at Chichen Itza is the Temple of Kukulcan, also known as El Castillo. This step pyramid is renowned for its precise astronomical alignments and the famous serpent shadows that appear during the spring and autumn equinoxes. Apart from Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza, there are numerous other notable pyramid complexes throughout Mexico. These include Palenque, located in the state of Chiapas, known for its intricately carved temples and the Temple of the Inscriptions; Tulum, situated on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, featuring stunning ocean views; and Monte Alban, an ancient Zapotec city in Oaxaca, characterized by its unique architectural style. Each of these pyramid complexes showcases the remarkable achievements in architecture, engineering, and religious beliefs of the ancient Mexican civilizations. They provide fascinating insights into the rich history and cultural heritage of the region.
Description: An immersive reading of an untitled poem by King Nezahualcoyotl translated by Daniel Brinton with reflection on Nahuatl poetry, memento mori, and flowers.Website:https://anauscultation.wordpress.com/ Work: Excerpts from an untitled poem by King Nezahualcoyotl translated by Daniel Brinton1. The fleeting pomps of the world are like the green willow trees, which, aspiring to permanence, are consumed by a fire, fall before the axe, are upturned by the wind, or are scarred and saddened by age.2. The grandeurs of life are like the flowers in color and in fate. […]3. The delicious realms of flowers count their dynasties by short periods; those which in the morning revel proudly in beauty and strength, by evening weep for the sad destruction of their thrones, and for the mishaps which drive them to loss, to poverty, to death and to the grave. All things of earth have an end. […]4. […] nothing is so perfect that it does not fall and disappear. […]5. The caverns of earth are filled with pestilential dust which once was the bones, the flesh, the bodies of great ones who sate upon thrones […]6. […] Were I to introduce you into the obscure bowels of this temple, and were to ask you which of these bones were those of the powerful Achalchiuhtlanextin, first chief of the ancient Toltecs; […] if I continued thus questioning about all our august ancestors, what would you reply? The same that I reply—I know not, I know not; for first and last are confounded in the common clay. What was their fate shall be ours, and of all who follow us.7. Unconquered princes, warlike chieftains, let us seek, let us sigh for the heaven, for there all is eternal, and nothing is corruptible. The darkness of the sepulchre is but the strengthening couch for the glorious sun, and the obscurity of the night but serves to reveal the brilliancy of the stars. We are continuing our Mesoamerica series with the Tlahuelpuchi. The Nahuas believe in a creature they call the Tlahuelpuchi. It is said to have the form of a woman, often described as beautiful and alluring, which helps it deceive and entice its victims. It has long, flowing hair that cascades down its back, and its eyes are known to possess a captivating, mesmerizing quality, sometimes described as glowing or piercing with an otherworldly intensity. The creature may appear to be harmless and attractive at first, luring unsuspecting individuals closer. The Nahuas are a larger indigenous group that encompasses various subgroups and communities across Mexico and Central America. They share a common linguistic heritage as speakers of the Nahuatl language. The Nahuas predate the Aztec civilization and have a long history that includes other prominent civilizations such as the Toltecs and Teotihuacanos. Please don't forget to get in on the t-shirt give away on our instagram and tiktok! The Four AgreementsThe Four Agreements Full Book Introduction We are born into a nightmare. From birth, our parents or guardians teach us the ways of the social world. They want to help us to adapt to the rules and belief systems in this current nightmare; until a day comes when we start to educate ourselves to be like obedient animals with freedom taken from us. Luckily, The Four Agreements can rescue us from this nightmare. The author deploys these four agreements as a weapon for people to turn against their everyday suffering and guilt. It is a battle to break the intangible bonds of entrenched obedience and have the ability to pursue true happiness. Author : Don Miguel RuizDon Miguel Ruiz was born into a family of healers. They were practitioners of ancient Toltec traditions. After high school, he was admitted to study medicine and graduated as a surgeon. Following a near-death experience, Ruiz became interested in Toltec culture, which he went on to study, conducting research into the heritage of pre-Columbian healing and teaching. Today, he is a Nasual of the Eagle Knight lineage. This means he is responsible for guiding people towards spiritual freedom and committed to sharing the Toltec culture to enlighten future generations. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today we will unlock the book The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom, A Toltec Wisdom Book. From a Southern Mexican perspective, Toltec culture embodies thousands of years of wisdom. The Toltecs were mostly scientists and artists. Over many generations, their civilization encouraged people to explore spiritual knowledge in a quest for ultimate truth. Toltecs advocate spirituality but do not preach religion. Their culture is devoted to helping people achieve spiritual freedom, transcendent love and happiness. Over the past few thousand years, the Toltecs have guarded their ancestral wisdom, keeping it a secret, fearing the probability of their spiritual riches being misused by European conquerors and miscreant disciples. As their homeland became exposed to the outside world, it was more vital to protect Toltec knowledge and keep it pure. However, in the spirit of sharing wisdom and helping people on their route to enlightenment, Don Miguel Ruiz finally decided to sit down and write to let more people know about Toltec culture through his book The Four Agreements. This book can truly set your mind free. In its pages, Ruiz tells us that everyone is born into a nightmare. From the moment we are born, our parents teach us how to adapt to the rules and regulations of the nightmare until the day comes when we start to train ourselves to conform and become obedient like a well-trained animal with no hope of freedom. Luckily, The Four Agreements can rescue us from this fate. The agreements of the title are as follows: “be impeccable with your word,” “don't take anything personally,” “don't make assumptions,” and “always do your best.” Wielding these four agreements as our tools, Ruiz aims to help us perceive the nature of our suffering and to break free from invisible bondage, so as to chase true freedom and happiness. Next, let's talk through the book's content in three parts:Part One: A painful life in nightmares Part Two: Four agreements that will change your life And Part Three: Break free from old agreements and win back your freedom
In this pick-me-up episode, we introduce you to the characters, companions, clowns, and survivors that are the dogs of the Toy group. Once seen as symbols of royalty and aristocracy, dogs of the Toy group were often the coveted spoils of revolutions, war, and palace coups. The refined elegance and charm of these compact dogs assisted in their survival and solidified their place in many decidedly non-royal homes of today. Join us as we look at how favorite breeds of kings, queens, monarchs, and fashionistas both plummeted and soared in popularity. Bonafide Bits: Chihuahuas, originally named Techichis, were kept by the Toltecs to guide their human companions into the afterlife. Both Pekingese and Maltese are referred to as “lion dogs.” Aristotle called the elegant Maltese perfectly proportioned. In 1926, Roswell Eldridge Esquire offered a hefty purse to breeders who could replicate toy Spaniels of King Charles' time. In the 1500s, Dutch traders smuggled Pugs out of China where they would become mascots in Holland's House of Orange. Featured Breeds: Pekingese Pekingese are compact, stocky toy dogs weighing up to 14 pounds. The coat is longest at the neck and shoulders, giving Pekes their famous “lion's mane.” Coats come in various reds, from golden red to darker shades. The large, short-muzzled head is a wider-than-long, envelope-shaped rectangle, and the eyes are large, dark, and sparkly. A unique feature of Pekes is their effortless “rolling” gait. Pekes are charming, confident companions who develop a tight bond with their favorite human. Bred to live in palaces, they can be as serenely independent as the emperors who owned them. (They're “opinionated,” Peke people say.) Ever alert, they make good watchdogs. Pekes will tolerate kids but won't stand for a lot of roughhousing. Discover more about Pekingese at AKC's Pekingese Breed Biography. Chihuahua The Chihuahua is a balanced, graceful dog of terrier-like demeanor, weighing no more than six pounds. The rounded “apple” head is a breed hallmark. The erect ears and full, luminous eyes are acutely expressive. Coats come in many colors and patterns and can be long or short. The varieties are identical except for the coat. Chihuahuas possess loyalty, charm, and a big-dog attitude. Even tiny dogs require training, and without it, this clever scamp will rule your household like a little Napoleon. Compact and confident, Chihuahuas are ideal city pets. They are too small for roughhousing with kids, and special care must be taken in cold weather, but Chihuahuas are adaptable as long as they get lots of quality time in their preferred lap. Discover more about Chihuahuas at AKC's Chihuahua Breed Biography. Maltese The tiny Maltese, “Ye Ancient Dogge of Malta,” has been sitting in the lap of luxury since the Bible was a work in progress. Famous for their show-stopping, floor-length coat, Maltese are playful, charming, and adaptable toy companions. Discover more about Malteses at AKC's Maltese Breed Biography. Papillon The quick, curious Papillon is a toy dog of singular beauty and upbeat athleticism. Despite his refined appearance, the Pap is truly a “doggy dog” blessed with a hardy constitution. Papillon fanciers describe their breed as happy, alert, and friendly. A tiny dog, measuring 8 to 11 inches at the shoulder, you can still spot a Papillon a block away thanks to the large, wing-shaped ears that give the breed its name (“papillon” is French for “butterfly”). Some Paps have erect ears; in others, known as the Phalene type, the ears are down. Paps are dainty and elegant, with a plumed tail, and a long, silky coat of several color combinations, the base color being white. More robust than they look, Paps are little dogs for all seasons and reasons. They thrive in warm or cool climates, in town or country, and are eager to join the family fun. They are excellent agility dogs and are consistent winners at the sport's highest levels; less ambitious owners can train them to do all kinds of tricks. Discover more about Papillons at AKC's Papillon Breed Biography. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel wears his connection to British history in his breed's name. Cavaliers are the best of two worlds, combining the gentle attentiveness of a toy breed with the verve and athleticism of a sporting spaniel. The large domed head with its long and lush ears, dark melting eyes, and chubby cheeks is a famous breed trait. The profuse coat comes in four varieties, each with its own proper name: red and white (Blenheim); black and tan (King Charles); white, black, and tan (Prince Charles); and a solid red (Ruby). Blenheims often have a red mark, the 'Blenheim Spot,' on top of the head. The ETS, like many toy breeds kept by royals, came to assume the personalities of their aristocratic owners. They can be proud and willful, and extremely discriminating in their choice of friends. With their favored humans, they are affectionate at home and exuberant and curious at play. Pug Once the mischievous companion of Chinese emperors, and later the mascot of Holland's royal House of Orange, the small but solid Pug is today adored by his millions of fans around the world. Pugs live to love and to be loved in return. The Pug's motto is the Latin phrase “multum in parvo” (a lot in a little), an apt description of this small but muscular breed. They come in three colors: silver or apricot-fawn with a black face mask, or all black. The large round head, the big, sparkling eyes, and the wrinkled brow give Pugs a range of human-like expressions, such as surprise, happiness, and curiosity that have delighted owners for centuries. Pug owners say their breed is the ideal house dog. Pugs are happy in the city or country, with kids or old folks, as an only pet, or in a pack. They enjoy their food, and care must be taken to keep them trim. They do best in moderate climates “not too hot, not too cold” but, with proper care, Pugs can be their adorable selves anywhere. IGs make decorative couch dogs, but at heart, they are flash-and-dash coursing hounds with an instinct for pursuit. Discover more about Italian Greyhounds at AKC's Italian Greyhound Breed Biography. Silky Terrier Small but not fragile, feisty but not yappy, pretty but not sculpted, Silkys are 10-inch-tall dynamos animated by curiosity and high spirits. The glorious blue-and-tan coat is straight and glossy, and it feels and behaves much like human hair. The wedge-shaped head is topped by profuse hair parted down the middle, and erect V-shaped ears draw attention to the keen, piercing expression of the almond-shaped eyes. Silky Terriers are more refined than typical ratting terriers, but they should still look and behave like a true earth dog. Discover more about Silky Terriers at AKC's Silky Terrier Breed Biography. Yorkshire Terrier Beneath the dainty, glossy, floor-length coat of a Yorkshire Terrier beats the heart of a feisty, old-time terrier. Yorkies earned their living as ratters in mines and mills long before they became the beribboned lapdogs of Victorian ladies. The Yorkshire Terrier is a compact, toy-size terrier of no more than seven pounds whose crowning glory is a floor-length, silky coat of steel blue and a rich golden tan. Don't let the Yorkie's daintiness fool you. Tenacious, feisty, brave, and sometimes bossy, the Yorkie exhibits all the traits of a true terrier. Often named the most popular dog breed in various American cities, Yorkies pack lots of big-town attitude into a small but self-important package. They are favorites of urbanites the world over. Yorkies are long-lived and hypoallergenic (the coat is more like human hair than animal fur), and they make fine little watchdogs. This is a true “personality breed,” providing years of laughs, love, and close companionship. Discover more about Yorkshire Terriers at AKC's Yorkshire Terrier Breed Biography. Pomeranian The tiny Pomeranian, long a favorite of royals and commoners alike, has been called the ideal companion. The glorious coat, smiling, foxy face, and vivacious personality have helped make the Pom one of the world's most popular toy breeds. StoryShots Summary and Review of The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz Introduction The Four Agreements is a practical guide to personal freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz, who became an apprentice under a shaman. He has expert knowledge of the ancient Toltecs, an indigenous Mexican culture of noble warriors and artists that lived around 1,000 years ago. The book is based on Toltecs' attitude to freedom from self-limiting beliefs that may cause suffering in a person's life. The Four Agreements is a highly influential book. It was first published in 1997 and has been an ever-popular book since Oprah Winfrey endorsed it in 2001 and 2013. The book has been translated into 46 languages, sold over 8 million copies in the US, and spent over a decade on the New York Times bestseller list. About Don Miguel Ruiz Don Miguel Ruiz is a Mexican author whose work is inspired by Toltec spiritualist and neoshamanistic texts. He was born into a family of healers and raised in rural Mexico by a curandera (healer) mother and a nagual (shaman) grandfather. His family assumed he would take on their centuries-old legacy of healing and teaching, and carry forward the Toltec knowledge. Instead, distracted by modern life, Ruiz attended medical school and became a surgeon. A near-death experience changed his life. Stunned by this experience, he began an intensive practice of self-inquiry. He devoted himself to the mastery of ancient ancestral wisdom. He studied earnestly with his mother and completed an apprenticeship with a powerful shaman in the Mexican desert. In 2018, he was listed as one of Watkins' 100 most spiritually influential living people. Death/Rebirth process in December: Strips you of a current iteration, belief or pattern you want to let go of. Makes you a better Artist of your Life. Join BEING ME mini here.Once you've awakened from the old dream that was dreaming you (your old program of conditioning, the Matrix you were trapped inside...), you're now the Artist. The Artist is the one who can create the dream, the life, they want. As the Artist of your life (as the Toltecs call it) you have stepped into an ongoing process of re-inventing yourself. You dream, you create, you take action, you nurture your creation, you refine, and then you let parts of your creation and iterations of yourself die to leave room for new.The circle of life.Moving through transformation after transformation, while YOU, at the core, also remain still. Unchanged. The unchanging essence of consciousness as the ever-changing expression of life in the form of a human. When this realization - the unchanging and the ever-changing - is felt, there's less attachment to the current created iteration of yourself. The Artist needs to get skilled at dying, at letting go. And skilled at meeting with fears connected with dying, and shifting old associations with the idea of Death. The mind, however, has been used to create attachments and clings to identification. If you've been identified with your mind for a long time, it's likely you believe it's you speaking when it says “I don't know how to let go!”.It's probably true, that the mind doesn't know. Letting go is a natural state of things. It's not a doing, but a being. Do you need to DO dying? No, you let it happen. (While your ego mind might fight and try to resist it…)In this week's episode of the Uncover YOU podcast, you're invited into the world of embodied letting go.Because that's what I find way more helpful than trying to explain to the mind how to let go.You find show notes in this post on my website
Don Jose Ruiz is a Toltec Master of Transformation and modern-day Shaman. He is a direct descendant of the Toltecs of the Eagle Night lineage and is the son of don Miguel Ruiz. He is the author of The Fifth Agreement, Ripples of Wisdom, and My Good Friend the Rattlesnake. Along with his family, he teaches workshops and offers transformational journeys around the world. Jose starts by talking about the underworld as a metaphor for personal growth. He says that when we face our demons, we are facing our fears and how we use the word against ourselves. When we experience emotional pain, we enter the underworld. But when we find our medicine and learn to heal our heartbreak, we grow in spirit, wisdom, and maturity. In this way, we start to believe in ourselves, and we bring our light into the world. The most important thing Jose took away from the underworld is faith in himself. He discovered his greatest ally – and that ally is himself. And the key to this is gratitude for life. Jose says that in the darkness, seeds are being planted. In this way, we must live our light and live our peace. It's easy to blame others. However when we play the blame game, we suppress ourselves and give up our power. But, there comes a time when we find our divinity. Jose says that true spirituality is when we support the love of our life that is ourselves. Jose also reminds us that inspiration creates the artist. And when we share our wisdom, it creates ripples that travel endlessly and eternally throughout the universe. Jose shares how he practices gratitude. He says sometimes when his body feels anxious or fearful, he stops replaying the patterns from the past and instead returns to the gratitude for being alive. And he says gratitude leads us to self-forgiveness. Simply put, Jose says, “I'm not a guru, I'm not a teacher, I'm just someone who is grateful to be alive.” In the end, Jose and I have a little surprise - we join our voices together and sing "LET IT BE" by the Beatles. if you want to learn more about Jose, his books as well as his upcoming series of live events, you can find him here: https://www.miguelruiz.com/don-jose-ruiz Today's episode's sponsor is Microbiome Labs. He refers to the world we live in as a shadow world or a fog of life that the ancient Toltecs refer to as Mitote. Often referred to in yoga as Maya meaning Illusion The formation of beliefs is what he calls the Domestication of Humans. From a young age, we didn't have the opportunity to choose our own beliefsOnce we begin to question our thoughts and the origin of our beliefs, we are able to free ourselves from the fogWe begin to live as our Authentic selves and leave the Dream that was layered on by the world around We can develop a new belief system that gives us the freedom to measure up to who we want to be rather than that of the Mitote and Don Miguel Ruiz offers us Four Agreements as a path to Personal Freedom. Check out today's Episode for a summary of Agreement #1: Be Impeccable with Your Word.
"Leaping into the Abyss Requires Faith, but Will Set You Free" Have you ever had Analysis Paralysis, or been unable to make a decision? I'm sure you have - it happens all the time. Basically, we have two or more options, but we can't know for sure what the outcome of either decision will be. Carlos Castaneda, in the books about Don Juan and the Toltecs, described this as leaping into an Abyss. When my wife and I were contemplating marriage, we viewed our individual and collective futures as a leap into an Abyss. Were we both willing to take the risk of how we will fall or land? The answer was yes, and we have been married for almost seven years. The key to this leap is faith. Like the adage, 'a leap of faith', faith requires you to let go of the 'not knowing' in lieu of a belief that things will work out ok.This faith is the other side of knowing. It's the opposite. The Yang to the Yin. The Darth Vader to the Luke Skywalker. It's how the universe is made. It's also an agreement to take the good with the bad. Take my marriage. Not everything is unicorns and rainbows. We made an agreement to deal with the good and the bad, the 'sickness and health', of it all. We did NOT assume things would always be one way or the other. Because they aren't. There is good and there is bad. Take the Grateful Dead. They asked their audience to leap in to an abyss. Some shows might be great, others might not be. But the agreement states that everyone would be together and love one another regardless of the outcome. The WHOLE THING was about the journey and not the result. This theme of focusing on the unfolding of life over the result or outcome is key here. It's the point I'm trying to make. If we surrender our need to KNOW the outcome, and focus on having FAITH that the outcome will be fine, or at least how it is meant to be, it frees us not only from worry but from not being able to enjoy the ride.Like the Dead say, "I'm going to hell in a bucket, but at least I'm enjoying the ride".I hope I, and all of us, can remember to enjoy the ride and break the agreements focusing on positive results. When we start to believe things will be ok, they are.You can subscribe to the Knowledge + Experience = Wisdom podcast or YouTube channel by searching your podcast app or YouTube.

In this episode, Liz Forrest shares teachings from her mentor Don Miguel Ruiz, author of the book, The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom. The book offers guiding principles based on ancient Toltec wisdom that advocates freedom from self-limiting beliefs that may cause suffering and limitation in a person's life. The Toltecs are the indigieous people of Central Mexico, which has been referred to as the heart chakra of the planet. They created the pyramids there and led lives of consciousness and connection. The Toltec wisdom is the study of energy. They teach us that we are a combination of energy systems just like everything else on the planet. The teachings include astrology, astronomy, unity and oneness- reminding us that we are one with nature, the elements, the animals and each other. One of the principle teachings is that of awareness. This is awareness of holding and directing your energy, to be able to recognize where you begin to lose your energy by being frivolous with your words. You are constantly spinning energy with your words, The question is, are you focusing your energy in the direction of love or destruction? Her newest book already number one international bestsellers called Love is fierce healing the mother wound and describes the most direct path to spiritual enlightenment. I think everybody wants that right? Like, do not pass go, just you know straight to the end. Guys pretty funny, you said you know, you're gonna you're gonna let intuition guide. And that's really how we kind of start this whole thing off every time here. And the idea is, you know, somebody out there tune in today is tune in to hear what source is sending through you, since we're, you know, vehicles of Source Energy, right? What what is what's coming through you today that that listener needs to hear Kerri Hummingbird 2:02 what's coming through loud and clear is slow down, really slow down, slow down, restrain, get still get in nature, put your feet on the earth, put your hand over your heart, the other hand over your belly, and just really be present with this vehicle that we most of us ride. Like it's just a bucking bronco. And we just need to actually be gentle with this, this animals as being that we are in the integration of our spirit with this, this animal, basically, you know, it's an animal. And a lot of times, we're kind of mean to our animals, you know, we don't necessarily feed it that well or take good care of it, we kind of expected to work 12 hour days, and then just be perky at night to have fun. Oh, so we slow down, the things are so hectic. And you know, COVID couldn't even slow us down. It's kind of amazing how even COVID didn't slow us down because we're right back at it, you know, and we need to really heat that heat that message because really what happens is like we get into connection with some deeper vibratory patterns on the planet, when we slow down, we get connected with the heartbeat of this mother that we all share this Mother Earth. And when we get connected with that heartbeat, and that rhythm of the Earth, actually, things are way less struggle. It's way less effort connected from that heartbeat space, that rhythm of the earth. Things can get easier. Life gets easier. Brandon Handley 3:40 Right? I love the idea of kind of for you sounds like there's almost two heartbeat synchronizations right, first of all, kind of get get in sync with your own heart. What is it a HeartMath Institute, which I think has some really great work done with it. And then identifying Earth as though it were a living being as well. And then kind of getting your rhythm in sync with that. Is that kind of which is that kind of what you're saying? Kerri Hummingbird 4:15 Yeah, absolutely is set really as if it it is a living being you know, I think most people think the Earth is a floor and they walk around on it. But the Earth is a living breathing being and trees are living breathing beings and plants and animals and and including us. And we have this we have these beautiful technologies, right like we're we're on technology right now. It lets us have a conversation from wherever you are to wherever I am, could be anywhere around the entire world, people could be listening. That is so amazing as such a great product of the mind. And we're listening from a body from a body that has a heartbeat that has lungs that has muscle souls that has senses, you know, awarenesses when we allow ourselves to get out of our minds and into the body, that's actually where the real game is, you know, a lot of people, including my son, you know, both of my sons, especially my younger son, they love the computer games, like, just let me play computer games all day long, I'm happy, they'll just stay in my room and play computer games. And I keep trying to tell them, you know, that's really interesting in your mind, but there's actually like, some really trippy stuff that happens when you get off the computer and get in deeply into your human experience. And into the earth experience. There's some super mystical, amazing stuff that happens in that process that really blows it out of the water in terms of what's more amazing. Brandon Handley 5:53 What's an example that you'd like to use for them? Kerri Hummingbird 5:57 Oh, yeah, I love this one that I'm thinking about this time that I was in training with the power path School of shamanism. And I was on a retreat, three days in the woods, you know, no, no food, no brain oriented things by myself with a 10 and some water. And I got bored after the first day, you know, the end of the first day, and I'm like, Okay, what am I going to do now? There's no books to read. There's no, there's nothing brain oriented. I'd already done all the things I set up the campsite, I made my medicine wheel. I mean, I did everything. So now what I did just be so I went and stood up on this rock, I found this rock. And it was like a stage because it was really big. I went up and sat stood up on the stage. And I started practicing Healing Songs. Because in this program, we learned how to sing Healing Songs, like from the jungle and Icaros they call them. So I'm up on there singing the Icaros. And in this acre, I was calling in support like, you know, Bear COME TO ME NOW and Firefly coming to, you know, whatever, I could think of singing a song. And at the end of several verses, I got this little giggle and I thought, you know, I'm gonna innovate hummingbird. And is the moment I started singing in Hummingbird, an actual hummingbird flew through the forest, and hovered right in front of my third eye, about 12 inches away from my third eye. And it stayed there. As my eyes got huge, Brandon Handley 7:36 some real snow. Like, way, like Alright, what else? Can we you know, did you What else did you call in? Kerri Hummingbird 7:43 conjuring up? So, I mean, I basically was like, so in other words, you come when I call and it nodded. And then it flew away. Awesome. Brandon Handley 7:53 That's pretty intense, for sure. Um, it's a hard sell on a couple of boys in the video games, right? What is my guess? Well, again, I think that that's super impactful. They're just not there yet. Right. And I think that that's part of the challenge is, you know, that growth into recognizing just how powerful an experience like that can be. When you're in tune sounds like when you're in tune with the way you were, in that moment, kind of with your heart and the Earth's vibration as well. Kerri Hummingbird 8:29 Yeah, it's it's a, it's a slowing down. Now. I don't, I don't judge my kids. I mean, they're young, right. And I gotta tell you, my mind was filled up when I was their age. I, I'm not sure there was any space, there was a rock concert going on inside my head. You know, like, all the time. It was so busy and so loud. And I remember I used to have to sit at stoplights. And just to deal with the fact that there was a stoplight. I had to count, like to start counting 1002 1003 1004 Just to get through the fact that I had to wait at the stoplight. That's how impatient I was. Brandon Handley 9:08 I get it, right. I know that. Geez. I used to drive so fast and reckless. Right? Like I just kind of go anywhere I could as fast as I could traffic, weaving in and out doing whatever. Somebody's slowing down and be like, ah, freaking out. Right? Why is this? And now just like whatever man, you know? Yeah, sure. You know, it's it's, it's, we're slowing down. And that's just that's just what we're doing here right now. Being okay with it. But I totally I totally get it. So let's let's walk through right like kind of how you even found yourself in this space, because I'm sure that you weren't always calling hummingbirds to your to your third eye. All right. So let's let's get to it. Let's let's start off kind of a little bit in the beginning. You know, you're you're deep into spirituality space right now. You're doing Sam Stick you're doing. I'd last time you and I had a quick conversation. You're doing plant medicine, you've got a lot going on, who, you know, who were you before? How did you fall into spirituality? Because that's usually my experience is like most people just kind of like, oh, there it is. Right? And then, you know, kind of rolling into the next piece. And then you know, what's happening now? What's happening now? Kerri Hummingbird 10:24 Yeah, so Well, I, I was always spending time I was 15, a teenager, I was in psychotherapy, because I was, you know, my parents were very concerned that I was going to have mental challenges because I didn't really rocky early beginning, in my life, the first five years of my life were a little traumatic, between my natural father and my mother's first choice of father who was a violent drunk. And, you know, so the trauma of that experience, and anybody who's listening who's had a similar experience, my heart just goes out to you, because I know how long it's taken me to get safe in my body from that experience, but I was doing psychotherapy to kind of, you know, work on fixing me because I had big emotional swings. And, you know, I kind of prone to some wild behavior, which were all signs of that early trauma, you know, from psycho therapies point of view. So I was trying to do it that way from the mind. And it was okay. I mean, I got some coping skills. But when I became a mother at 30, everything just flew out the window, you know, I was immersed in a darkness that I can't even explain, but it was profound, you know, and struggling to be happy, I wanted to be happy I wanted a child, that was completely my choice, I wanted to have a baby. And I was, I was actually really upset that I was so upset, you know, because I really wanted to have this experience. And when it didn't work out that way, I was in deeper psychotherapy. And then they put me on some pills, because, you know, that's sort of the Western medical solution as well just stop feeling that so here's some pills and make that go away. So I did that, you know, I kind of coped that way for a while. But what I finally realized was that there was a lot of limitation in the dynamic between me and my spouse, because we were playing very traditional roles. And that wasn't working out for me, you know, when I became a mother, those traditional roles, like, they didn't work anymore. When I'm saying that, I mean, like, you know, the whole knight in shining armor thing, you know, I really liked that I liked having that knight in shining armor, and I liked sort of being the Maiden in distress. But when you're the mother, that doesn't fly very well, you know, because somebody has got to take care of the baby. And that was me, you know, that was my job. I mean, I was the one with the breast milk. So you know, it's kind of my job, you know, to take care of this baby. And I couldn't just fall apart, you know, the way I had previously in my life, or run away or get away from it somehow. So that was the beginning of learning how to stay in the conversation and learning how to deepen within myself. And at that moment, what I actually needed was spirituality, I deeply, deeply, deeply needed spiritual connection, I needed to understand that it was okay to open to some bigger support, you know, it was okay to open myself and I and I was subconsciously doing that because I was an artist. So it was always outside painting. So in some way, some part of me knew you need to be outside, you need to be in nature. And I spent hours out there painting, because I just needed to get out and get connected. I didn't even understand what I was doing. I just was kind of doing it. But I remember I used to walk the baby, I take these long walks, because he was so colicky our first child who took the brunt of our synthesis of polarity for a child took the brunt of all that. And I remember walking him, you know, on around the neighborhood. And I would always walk by this center for spiritual enlightenment. And my body would come to a halt. And my head would turn was look at I would feel a little yearning, like, I think I need to go in there. And then I would have a million reasons why I shouldn't namely, because my partner didn't believe in all that. And if I spent money on that, it'd be an argument is what I would turn away from it and keep walking. Right? So that was also just a big part of my journey. So those motherhood really called me up, you know, it called me up to make a stand. And it took me a while to make it. It didn't actually make that stand until I was my oldest child was going into middle school. And I finally things got bad enough meaning that I was I was really self abusing by holding myself back from my power and my Wisdom in my knowing and trying to fit into that tiny little box that society had made for me of the maiden. And it wasn't working. So I ended up leaving him and heading out on my own and opening to the great mystery. And pretty soon found a teacher that helped me to start to own my feminine and own the fact that whoa, I'm not small and skinny. I'm like, big and expansive. I have this thing called intuition. That's telling me things that he's not getting. I am emotional, because I'm designed that way. And feeling those emotions is actually what gives me the knowledge, the wisdom I need inside to cope with situations. So there is just all this unfolding that happened over the last decade, that has been amazing and tremendous, and has guided me to heal any places where I was holding blame for him, because it wasn't his fault that I was having an awakening. Brandon Handley 16:04 Yeah, a lot to unpack there. But I mean, you know, a big part of it, right is when the depression state right, or like we getting the medicated thing, when they've seen Western medicine, like you're saying, it's just like, to give you this thing to help you get rid of it as really, you're just cutting off a piece of your own internal guidance, right. And again, that's just my perception was that the way that you were feeling like when you when you kind of got that medication there was like, it's isolation of feelings, or almost like a, like a soft knocking at the door that you just couldn't answer. Kerri Hummingbird 16:48 You know, for me, I was with the birth of my child, I was drowning in my emotions, and my depression, I was seeing visions of big holes in the floor, like I saw this vision in the shower of a big dark hole opening up in the middle of the floor, like going somewhere in other regions, right. So I was having wild impulses. So for me, it was actually helpful at first to take the edge off that extreme experience. So that I could provide for my child because I needed to be present, right, I needed to be able to be a safe place for this baby. So I had to be on that, I think at first, only because I did not have the training before my motherhood and how to handle my emotions. Now had I been trained earlier, and how to channel my emotional experience, and how to move through waves of emotion while staying grounded and present. And being a safe place. For others. Even though I'm experiencing my emotions, that would have been a completely different experience. And I probably wouldn't have broken down the way I did. Okay, real quick. And if I'd done some healing to Brandon Handley 17:56 you real quickly, before we move on from that, right? What are some of those tools that if you had had prior to or some of that knowledge, if you're able to share it? That would have been beneficial? Right, that, you know, looking back said, hey, you know, just would have would have been nicer, no sooner? Kerri Hummingbird 18:15 Yeah, like. I really think that being aware that emotions are a sign that something's out of balance, instead of a sign that you're crazy or broken. Number one, that would have been really great to know that. And because I didn't know that I of course, wanted to suppress my emotions, because I didn't want to be crazy and broken. So I think that's a judgment that collectively as a society, we could start unwinding and untangling that to make emotions normal. And to help each other to feel them. So that's on a bigger level, but at the at the individual level. You know, just listen to my words and hear me when I say you're not broken and crazy, if you have emotions, you're human. And whenever I'm having them now, a lot of times what I'll do is hold myself, so put my hand over my heart, a hand over my belly. If I'm feeling grief, I'll let myself cry. And, and just until it passes, and even if I'm in a like situation where you're not supposed to cry. Like yesterday, I was at brunch with my mom and some big emotion came up because I was reading to her from her her profile, her jinkies profile, and I was having this huge realization about what a blessing she was for me in my life because she was this essence this energy that I needed. And I was reading to her and I was I looked at her and I said, Mom, I just I resented you so much for being exactly this, but this is your design and I just burst into tears. And that's okay with me. I think don't care anymore. If people see me crying, I don't, that is so genuine to cry with that realization and to share that moment with my mom, even though we're out in public at a restaurant. It's just, it's just so beautiful. And I don't judge it anymore. So I think like, feel your feelings. And if other people are uncomfortable with that, well, that's their job, that's their work to do is to get more comfortable with you expressing your feelings. And, you know, if you feel angry, that's one that I tried to, you know, to process without directing it at someone I really, I that's the only caveat I would have is express the emotion and just do your best not to express it at someone, you know, like, like, own that emotion is completely yours. Do your processing with it. For me with anger, I like to you know, I like to go ride off on some country road and just like roar, like a lion, you know, just like, get somewhere and just roar like I'm in the jungle because it's just energy. It's just like fire energy from the will center usually. And so you just need to kind of roar that crap out just like yeah, just like, Release the Kraken? Brandon Handley 21:10 No, that's a great one, right? I mean, it's just, it's just this kind of pent up energy that's gotten you feeling like one sort of way. And there's a way to release it. And I like what you're saying there not to release it at somebody, but to release it just in general. Kerri Hummingbird 21:25 Right? Yeah. And it's really hard for men to release anger. I had this client once, who was, um, he was probably like, six foot three, six foot four, big guy, but big teddy bear guy. But you know, he had anger. But he had repressed it all because he wasn't allowed to express his anger in front of his father, right, his father kind of had his thumb on him. And he also wasn't definitely not supposed to express anger at or in front of women. You know, that was just not cool. So when I was coaching him, I had to, I was like, well, you're gonna have to release that anger. So let's try the roar. You know, and he's wearing my house, you know, so he's, he's like, I can't even he couldn't even open his throat to do it. He, like literally couldn't do it. And so I did it for him. I said, I did it first. I was like, Okay, I'm going to do it. So you know, it's okay. And when he felt my grounded power with my own anger, that made it safe, actually, for him to feel his anger, because he knew I could handle it. And I think this is a big message for women. You know, if you want your guys to express their anger in a safe way, then you have to feel your anger and, and really own your anger. And let yourself express that so that you can become a safe place for anger to be communicated. You know, but if you're if you don't own your own anger, and you play that victim role on the triangle, you know, then then there's just no place for authenticity to happen in the relationship. Brandon Handley 22:55 Like it's a triangle, you're talking like the Drama Triangle, the Drama Triangle. Kerri Hummingbird 22:59 Oh, yeah, triangle disempowerment triangle. Brandon Handley 23:02 Got it. Very cool. It's funny. You're bringing up the anger bit, right? I'm going through this book right now. Bringing your shadow out of the dark, right. And I think I just got done doing anger, that the deal is we we all think it's like the bad thing. But again, to your point, if you go back to when you're talking about emotions, they're just showing you something about what you're what's happening. And I think even stronger cases is that we're generally not taught and it sounds like you know, you weren't taught to pay attention to your motion is easy, like, I'm not supposed to have this emotion. Case in point is like, you know, you're you've got your, your firstborn. You want to be happy. You can't figure out how to get happy then there's like this vicious like, kind of cycle of wire and I something's wrong with me, because I'm not happy in this situation. What's wrong with me? What's wrong with me? Right? And that's not it, right? Like, you're just feeling a certain way. And like you said, you're human. And as humans, we, one of the side effects or benefits, however, you want to take a look at it, we feel. And I think one of the worst worst things is we're not taught how to cope with them, like you were saying. And I think you know, getting getting getting that kind of lesson sooner rather than later is very important. Kerri Hummingbird 24:25 Yeah, and there's a lot of there's a lot of expectation that women place on themselves when they become mothers, like, huge expectations about being perfect and being loving all the time. And always being giving and always being nurturing and always, always, always, and that is an impossible standard to me, because you're a human being. And especially if you don't take care of yourself. I've seen so many women that they just sublimate themselves to the family. Then they bend over backwards doing things everything for everybody. And they get celebrated when they do that, by the way, too. So it reinforces the role of like surrendering yourself or everybody else in the family about yourself. And that actually sets a really bad role model. Because now you're saying to everybody, you know, just surrender yourself completely to everybody else. And don't, don't worry about what's good for you, or to even take care of your own body. And, you know, even get the exercise you need, or even like, either right meals that you need, or get the emotional support that you need, like, completely, leave yourself behind and throw yourself under the bus to be like this corporate employee and go out there and do right You because You love your replicate the model. So I think it's better and it's brave and courageous. And you definitely can take a lot of flack for it. But for those moms who feel courageous, is to start stepping out of those expectations, like, actually get clear, what is a good example? Like, what would be a healthy way for me to live? And then what do I want to teach my kids? Like? How do I want to model healthy behavior, and self care for my kids, and not just what to say it, and then do something else, but actually stick by it, which means you have to have boundaries, and then that teach healthy boundaries to the kids to by your example. And it's when we won't do those things out of fear of not belonging, or being rejected or being criticized? Those are the things that hold us back is that fear? So I think, you know, one of the major realizations I've had about this whole paradigm is how it's a system. So our family systems are based on these expectations of each other, like the knight in shining armor, and I'm going to be the damsel in distress, and you're just going to rescue me, however, then I become a mother. And that just throws the whole thing out the wash, you know, it's like, well, that doesn't work anymore. And now there's this question of, well, how am I getting nourished? Right? And I've seen women all over the map with how they handle that disparity between being a maid and where everything was being rescued for you, and being a mother where you have to do everything. It's like, how do you navigate that? And then what is, you know, what's the masculine in the picture doing? You know? Because, like, how do you react to that? So there's, there's just so much just so juicy in that conversation of that, like, how we each choose to show up and be full humans, in the family, I think is like the answer from our hearts, you know, taking a spiritual journey, looking at our own shadows, as you were talking about owning those shadows, not stepping over anything. If anger comes up, anger is there. If resentment comes up resentments, they're seeing what that has to share with you. You know, for me, whenever resentment came up, it was telling me, Carrie, you're not taking care of yourself. You're not resourced. You needed to slow down and be resourceful. Brandon Handley 27:58 That makes sense, right? Because you're probably seeing everybody else's fully being taken care of, and getting everything that they need. And you're like, What the hell, right? And he starts to resent all that. That's simply because you're, you've given everything to everybody else, but you haven't given anything to yourself. In a scenario like that. D, you know, so the Thanks for Thanks for you know, talking, I guess about a couple of tools to write about things that you could use right? Before? Before before. Before time's right. And then, you know, so you're walking, you're doing your walks, and you're going past the US on past, like, your spirituality place. Did you ever step into that spirituality? Place? Or is Kerri Hummingbird 28:43 it never, I never went in. And I just, I must have stopped there, like, I know, 2030 times. And I was standing freeze and just look at it, even though it was getting more and more desperate, I would just look at you know, and I wouldn't go in, it was crazy that I wouldn't go in there. Brandon Handley 29:01 And you're talking about, you know, kind of this the stand that you took at a certain point. And you also talk about like all these other fears and stigmas about like the society, how they're going to look at you for whatever it is you do. I imagine there was a bit of that as you went through the divorce process. I don't know if that's anything you feel like sharing as part of this process that you went through? Kerri Hummingbird 29:23 Yeah, absolutely. Of course, everybody in my, in my connection, thought it was insane for leaving my husband because on the outside, it looked awesome. You know, I mean, it looked like I was getting everything I wanted, right? I had somebody that liked to party and have fun and go on vacations and we had a nice house and spent money but we even built me a studio. So you know, like an art studio so I could do my art. Like, I looked like I was just getting it all you know, and then nobody can understand. They're like, why are you leaving this guy? And it was because I I was just in my cage. Like there was this cage for me an elephant dictation in our relationship. And I was also up against my own edges. And I didn't have the tools to process that. With psychotherapy, I was still going to psychotherapy, but it was not, it wasn't hitting the mark, like, there's a depth to spirituality that I found is able to really heal, things that are operating that are totally influencing your decisions in your perceptions, but you don't even know it until you get deep enough. And the mind is not deep enough. So trying to solve it by talking about it isn't really deep enough to go. So a lot of the ways that I was looking at him, a lot of the dynamics that were playing out, were part of my soul's curriculum, it was calling me up to speak my truth. It was calling me up to honor myself, it was calling me up to trust my intuition. And, you know, an almost all the arguments we had were all about those things, you know, it'd be him challenging my intuition, it'd be him challenging my honor to be him challenging, you know, he would just poke poke, poke, poke poke at me, and, and it wasn't able to stand my ground, you know, and I was being called up to stand my ground. So if we look at the bigger picture of the evolution of humanity, we can see that the last, you know, several 1000 years has been mostly guided by the masculine energy, and some would say the imbalance, masculine energy, that patriarchal energy, which is sort of suppressing women's intuition and suppressing the feminine and all of us, really, you know, because that feminine and masculine, they live in all of us, no matter what body we have. So now is the time where we're waking that wild, feminine back up, and this is men, women, whatever gender you are, that feminine, that wild, feminine is being woken back up, and for anybody who's like delivered a baby, Ben, a mother in that capacity, it's really wild, the way it wakes up. It's like, it's like, you know, fierce Mama Bear waking up. And that energy had to come through me. But I was always conflict avoidance. So I wanted to be a pleaser, I liked being the golden daughter, I liked being daddy's girl. And here, I was being called up by the shadows to say, you're not daddy's girl, you're a grown ass woman, you're a mom, you need to stand in your power you need if you don't agree, you need to say you don't agree. If you know, there's another way, you need to say, you know, there's no another way. And you need to hold that even if there's no evidence to support you, you know, from the mind. So that's what I the initiation I was being called toward. And I was too chicken, you know, to do it at the time in that relationship, or just didn't have the tools really, to make that leap? Brandon Handley 32:49 It makes sense, right? I mean, you've got a lot of these these other spaces in places that were taught, right, and you're trying to think you have these discussions from the mind, and you're getting them from the heart and the gut. Versus and there's really, you know, it's hard to substantiate that. Right. And, and here, he is challenging all that and a loving relationship. We're just kind of supposed to trust each other out. Right. And that can be challenged, too. So you're, you're you're stuck in your cage, like you said, and then you know, you just decided to stand in your power and make the break. Right. I mean, that was more for the benefit of all parties involved, right? As far as I can tell. And it was time for you to just kind of break free of that paradigm. Kerri Hummingbird 33:38 Yeah, because it wasn't, it wasn't loosening up, you know, it was like getting more and more intense to the place where I was having. I mean, I'd always had a history of having some suicidal ideations, but those got very strong during that period, I had tons of self loathing, I was having nightmares, that would wake me up in the middle of the night with sweats, I was crying all the time, I'd like lock myself in my office, because I worked at home and I would just cry in there. So I knew like this is not whatever this is, is not working. And it's not good for any of us. And admittedly, during that time, for the last two years of our relationship, my self loathing got to the place where I started seeking validation outside of our marriage. So I started having affairs, and you know, short live, like one night or whatever, but it was like that need for some acceptance from some somebody who liked me just the way I was, instead of wanting me to be totally different. So that was, yeah, I was like, I can't go on like that, because that's not at the core of me that wasn't resonating with my integrity, and the person I am inside. So I could see the only reason I was doing that behavior was because of deep deep pain. And if that couldn't be healed through all the work that I've done for 20 years in psychotherapy, and some of the work we've done for a few years in couples therapy Then I had to move on. I mean, there just was I had to make a decision for the benefit of my kids and myself. Brandon Handley 35:07 And look, it makes sense. Right? You were you were? I think you'd set it up, you know, earlier up against it. All right, I would guess the edges. And you weren't seeing any way out. Right. And I think you would have been operating from a severe place of, you know, like claustrophobic, right? Just kind of lashing out just like just anything else. And you had to get out and do what was right for everybody. And it sounds like, it sounds like you did, right. So I mean, you make the break. And now Now though, like, I mean, look, you're, you're in this space, you've got your courses and books. He's got some seminars, you've got a thing coming up at the end of October, we were talking about the beginning here, which will pass by the time this gets released. But I mean, let's talk about, you know, kind of this journey, how it's led you into this spirituality where you said, you know, there's more depth in here than just from the mind, just pray in the spiritual space, love to hear, you know, a little bit more about that, and, and how you're leading from a spiritual place, spiritual place. Kerri Hummingbird 36:15 Yeah, so I think that the biggest decision, the biggest thing that's helped my personal growth in a spiritual path has been my heart stop, like when I had that realization that I don't ever want to be here anymore. And I've got these kids, and I've got to stay for them. That was my heart stop. So it was like, alright, that I have to change whatever it is that needs changing, that's up to me, I've got to take responsibility for that. So I can stay on the planet. So a lot of people don't necessarily have that heart of a stop. But I, it was pretty intense. So I knew that I had to do something. So that level of commitment was there. And that whenever anybody has that level of commitment, then the spiritual growth can be tremendous. Like, it's amazing how much can happen in a short period of time. So my journey started 10 years ago, and this part of my journey started 10 years ago, with my decision to leave and my decision to trust this spirit sign that I got that showed me that was the end of the rope. That's it. I followed that I had no idea was afraid, of course, you know, how am I going to support myself? I haven't really worked full time for a long time. I'm a mom, how are we going to work this out? And I just had to take the journey, you know, and I haven't done it perfectly. You know, I've made a lot of mistakes. I've especially when I started messengering. And I started writing my books, I was pretty much called right away to start writing my book that that awakening to me book was started, like within six months of my divorce, actually, like before the divorce was final it started. So that was immediate, like the messenger part of me woke up right after I left. So and then the spiritual aspect just like took off. I mean, I've had mentors that say, my early mentors, they were like, we don't even know who you are anymore. Like you just went like this. You just wow. Like, Pam, you know. And it's that I think it's that passion, that realization of the buck stops with me. Like, no one can save me, but me. So if I want to be here for my kids, I have got to make the choice to heal, and do it now. And that means I've got to humble myself. I've got to ask for help. I got to realize there's a thing or two I don't know, even though I've been a psychotherapy for 20 years, I mean, geez, I don't know something like something should work by now. But, but the thing is, it wasn't a waste. You know, all that time I spent navigating my thought tunnels is like it started clicking when I started combining it with the spirituality when I started combining it with energy healing and ancestral healing and early childhood healing and re parenting myself and all these modalities I've been practicing and learning for the last 10 years. It all clicked, it was like not time wasted. It was just time buffered, it was just buffered wisdom until I was ready to claim it. Right, like Brandon Handley 39:01 when you're watching a video and it's just like all waiting. And it's like spinning and spinning and spinning. And then it finally just plays and since it's like the show you've been waiting for. And I love the idea of it all just finally clicking right when that spirituality piece kind of drops in. I don't know how to. I don't know how to describe it. It's almost like you know, like watching a water wheel right and unless there's unless the water comes in like that wheels not moving right and then you know, spirituality there it is, right? It's just like starts moving and sets everything else into motion. You're like, holy shit. I guess there's something to this and it's, it's pretty intense. And that's what it sounds like, you know, sounds like sounds like that's what it's been like for you the growth and just kind of the idea of, you know, opening yourself up to it so that it just opens up to you type of thing. What um, you know, so I know that you'd mentioned on your When we're putting this stuff together, you know, what would you describe as the most direct path to spiritual enlightenment? Because I'm curious because you wrote it down? Kerri Hummingbird 40:11 Yeah. Well, that's why I say it's healing the mother wound. So we all have a mother wounds, because we're all born of a mother. And we're all on earth at this time on the planet. So unless you're just like born in a very unusual circumstance, you're experiencing some aspect of the mother wound. And at the very least, it's disconnection from the planet. It's a feeling of being separate alone. And you know, unguided, right? Like, like, somehow God's way out there somewhere. And maybe there is one or maybe there isn't. And you're here alone, just having to, like, survive, you know, so there's that, I have to do it myself. And all of that is all part of the mother wounds, and, and any ways that any kind of aspect of the feminine gifts that are that have been disempowered, all of those are the mother wounds. So if your intuition is not online, yet, if you're, you know, emotions, if you're not comfortable with your emotions, if, if you have a hard time slowing down and creating stillness and space, all of those are divine feminine gifts. And so it any one of that is also wounding and, and then there's ancestral patterns. So in a mother's body is her consciousness, right? It's her consciousness is happening inside her body. So when a baby starts to grow inside that consciousness, the baby is growing inside the mother's current state of consciousness, which means the baby is learning right away by this osmosis method, about life from the mother's reality. So therefore, if the mother's reality includes feeling disempowered, or not important, or not worthy, or not heard at all, how to speak up, I don't stand in my power, whatever version of that is happening inside that woman, the child is picking all of that up and inheriting that as his or her starting point in reality. So mothers often feel when I when they hear that, that's a deep truth that we all know. And that can provoke a feeling of guilt or shame about however, the conditions were that you were in when you had pregnant the first time, or a second time or third time, however many. And what I want to say to that is, you can let that go because you know, our children chose to come in incarnate through our vessels, at the exact moment that we were going through whatever it was, we were going through, to start them on their journey of discovery. So that they would have all that raw material to work with for their souls curriculum, so there isn't anything out of line. And with more consciousness, we can choose more consciously. And so there's always that beautiful gift of, if you haven't birthed yet, you can, you know, clear some of the ancestral patterns, you know, do some inner work, do some, some reconciliation within yourself in your ancestry to clean up some of that stuff that you don't want your kids to inherit, maybe there's some addiction patterns, or maybe there's some, you know, some conflict between the mothers or the daughters or the sons or whatever it is a father. So you can clear up that by doing your inner work, so that you're not passing that on as a starting point. So there's this invitation. And if your children are already fully grown, and having kids of their own, you can still do your work because as a mother, I know I remember moments of touching my belly when my baby was inside. And because I remember those moments, I can place myself there in the now and I can bring healing from my current awareness to my baby now. Even though it might have been 21 years ago, that he was in there, I can place that love inside me now. And trust that it's gonna find its way through his evolution to help him where he is now. And as I practice that, I've noticed him blossom. So my oldest son, I've noticed, you know, both of my sons, I do this, I put myself back in moments where I remember being with them in my body. And sometimes it's looking at a photograph. Sometimes it's just an embodied memory. And I send love and comfort back to that baby from my current awareness. We can all practice this. This is what the shamans have known for a long time we can be conscious and we can bring healing to seven generations back and seven forward using this method of, you know, fifth dimensional healing work on our children. Mothers are in a great spot to do that because we can remember when they were in inside of us, we can remember holding them. So we have this, this capacity, this direct and body connection with our babies so we can learn a good spot for do family healing work. Brandon Handley 45:12 That's very cool sounds. I think I remember hearing Gregg Braden, talk a little bit about a similar scenario, right? I mean, energy doesn't really know, time. Right? And energy is kind of at our discretion to direct you know, this, as we talked about before being vessels of creative energy as it flows through us. We can choose anger, we can choose something else, and we can choose like, which direction to send that and same thing with love and healing that you're talking about. So I think that that's, that's a great share, for sure. For sure. Well, is what I like to kind of hop on to right here is the whole idea that this is, look, when people tune in these podcasts, they tune your podcasts in the mind. It's kind of like spiritual speed dating, right? Like, you know, you know, I'm running through like, I'm just curious about like, who am I gonna hang out for a while, because I don't know about you. Like, I can listen to somebody like I'm a big like neville goddard fan or somebody. I've been listening to Swami svare pray Nanda for the past like year, but like, I'm ready for the next guy, right? I'm ready for the next gal guy, whatever. So spiritual speed dating. Let's ask a quick question or two, shall we? Um, to to do dear Bachelorette number one? Who is an artist, right? What is the line between art and not art? Kerri Hummingbird 46:37 What is the line between art of all I'm going to share this with you? With that I got from Don Miguel done. Jose Ruiz actually, I had this interview with him. And he said, you know, the Toltecs believe that, that your whole life is a piece of art. And I as an artist, I loved that. So I was a two dimensional Canvas artist, I painted acrylics and things like that. I loved creating art. And, and then I became a wordsmith artist, you know, I created books, I channeled texts. And, and it was like, when I ran across this Toltec teaching, I was like, my whole life is art. I like that my whole life is art. So Don Jose said in an interview, he said, you know, how do we not judge each other? He said, Well imagine that you're going into a gallery. And you walk up to this painting, and you bring your paint brushes, and your your paints, and you start painting and correcting someone's painting. You wouldn't do that. You wouldn't sit there with your paid supplies and go into a gallery and start painting over someone's painting. So don't do it to somebody else's life. That's like, you know, so I think that it's that creative expression. You know, true art is however we express ourselves, however, we, we want to express the essence of ourselves, or our passion, or joy or feelings, or whatever's going on inside of us that we want to share with others, that that can express in so many ways, including our just our life, you know, our very being can be a piece of art. Brandon Handley 48:06 I got it. So you know, self expression would be art. Right? Is that what you're saying? Yeah, yeah, pretty much I like it. Let's get one more in, shall we? Hmm. Haven't gone through this list of questions before. Ooh, what lifeless lesson did you learn the hard way? Kerri Hummingbird 48:31 Pretty much all almost every single lesson. You know, I, I used to beat myself up for making so many mistakes. Because I have I actually I have a sincere desire for perfection. It's in my jinkies chart, I have this fear of, you know, perfection in my city frequency of my purpose. So of course, I seek perfection. And, you know, I used to clamp myself down, you know, trying to not make mistakes, because I didn't ever want to make mistakes because I've got this fear of perfection, you know, the fear of making mistakes. And I started getting really mediocre when I was doing that. You know, my life was super mediocre. And I would say that is learning the hard way. You know, when you start clamping down your life force to not make mistakes. Eventually you're going to make really big mistakes which is clamping down your life or to not make mistakes. Now look, I Brandon Handley 49:30 get Kerri Hummingbird 49:31 that falls apart. Anyway, Brandon Handley 49:33 I get it. It makes sense. I mean, especially as we make these tremendous efforts to not make these mistakes is bound to just kind of ooze out on the side somewhere, but they got he missed. He missed the spots that that makes sense. What um, you know, who would you say with the work that you're doing? Who would you say is your ideal client? Kerri Hummingbird 49:57 My ideal client is someone who really is Ready to go into their shadows and take a look and see what's in there. And and really like bring the flashlight and learn how to do it with compassion and love and forgiveness and and really wants to melt you know is ready to be more gentle loving and kind with themselves with their spouse with their families ready to heal. And you know, I don't I have this whole thing I'm calling Earth mamas. I invite Earth mamas to come and work with me. And because I'm saying Earth mama, some people make the assumption that that means that I don't work with men or that I don't work with people who don't have children. And that's not the case. When I'm saying that I'm saying because we are on mama Earth, you know, we're on Mother Earth. And if you feel it in your heart, like I love this planet, I want to be a difference. I love my family. I want my future generations to be able to have like ripe juicy peaches and I want them to to be able to see dolphins you know, in in the waves and though and the oceans be clear, if that matters to you, then you're an earth mama and my book you know so I really people that care, you know people that care about this planet and people that want to make a difference and are ready to face their shadows. Brandon Handley 51:12 Look, I like dolphins and fruit so I feel like I'm gonna so no, that's That's great. You know, and I think that it's super clear when you're ready to start doing the work you'll you'll know when you're there. Sounds like there's the people that you're calling out to where can they come and find more Carrie hummingbird. Kerri Hummingbird 51:31 My website is Carrie hummingbird.com ke R ri hummingbird calm and you can find my books up there my events and workshops, retreats, all the good stuff, my soul nectar show which you're gonna come on beyond so that's awesome. can listen to Brandon over on Soul nectar show. The Art of Dreaming describes the steps needed to master the control and consciousness of dreams. The Toltecs of Don Juan Matus' lineage believed that there are seven barriers to awareness, which they termed The Seven Gates of Dreaming. In The Art of Dreaming Castaneda describes extensively how a state called Total Awareness can be achieved by means of dreaming. According to Castaneda there are 7 Gates of Dreaming, or obstacles to awareness, which when overcome yield total awareness. Four of the Gates of Dreaming are discussed in The Art of Dreaming. What follows is not so much a technique in achieving lucidity, but rather the practical application of lucid dreaming. By acting a certain way while dreaming, one can cause psychosomatic changes in one's being, including an alternate way of dying. What follows is a point-form summary of the philosophy surrounding Toltec dreaming as a way of "Sorcery that is a return to Paradise". 1st Gate of Dreaming (stabilization of the dreaming body): Arrived at when one perceives one's hands in a dream. Solved when one is able to shift the focus from the hands to another dream object and return it to the hands, all repeated a few times. Crossed when one is able to induce a state of darkness and a feeling of increased weight while falling asleep. Location in the body – in the area at the base of the V formed by pulling the big and second toes of one foot to the sides. 2nd Gate of Dreaming (utilizing the dreaming body): Arrived at when one's dream objects start changing into something else. Solved when one is able to isolate a Scout and follow it to the realm of Inorganic Beings. Crossed when one is able to fall asleep without losing consciousness. It is also referred to the activity of dreaming together with other practitioners. Location in the body – in the inside area of the calf. 3rd Gate of Dreaming (traveling): This is what is often known as an "Out of body experience". Arrived at when one dreams of looking at oneself. Solved when the dreaming and physical bodies become one. Crossed when one is able to control the dreaming body in the physical realm and move around at ease. Location in the body – at the lowest part of the spinal column. 4th Gate of Dreaming (sharing): This is the last gate explained in the book as such, and crossing it consists of being able to share the intended dream reality of other people. One has to have gathered enough strength into the dreaming body through the previous gates in order to travel to other people's dreams. Here we continue from our previous episode where we visit the shadow world but before hand I look into what actually happened to Carlos Castaneda and who was the blue scout. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Find out Mark's experience with meditation and how this made him into an ultimate warrior. Discover how a positive internal dialogue can train your brain to be focused. Know about recapitulation and how it can help in dealing with traumas. Episode Highlights [05:34] Mark's Background Mark's experiences with his father forged his mental toughness and resilience. This laid the foundation for him to be an ultimate warrior. He grew up boating, hiking, and running trails through the mountains. Athletics was his escape, but he wasn't able to think about his future. When Mark left college, he was fortunate enough to get a job in a big accounting firm; this allowed him to go to a top business school. Despite school and work, Mark was determined to continue his athletic career. He then became interested in Seido karate. Meditation made him realise that he wasn't following his true path. [15:13] Becoming an Ultimate Warrior Mark came across a Navy recruitment centre, saw their poster, and applied to be a SEAL. Mark graduated with his entire boat crew. He was number 1 in his class. Mark credits this achievement to meditation training and the team building activities that compelled you to tame your ego. [19:59] The Importance of Meditation and Yoga Mark meditated and trained in yoga every day in the war zone. He felt stronger and more confident. Yoga is the oldest science of mental and personal development. Mark learned that training one's physical, mental, emotional, intuitional, and spiritual aspects mean you can access more of yourself and your potential. Yoga, in a sense, is integration; it is coming back to who we are and being whole. Listen to the full episode to learn how Mark got into yoga and how this contributed to him becoming an ultimate warrior. [26:33] The Importance of Emotional Strength In SEAL training, most of those who quit were physically strong but lacked the emotional strength to handle extreme moments of crisis and doubt. The person subconsciously created the injury to quit. Mark tried to be flexible and didn't let anything bother him during SEAL training. Mark trains SEALs by teaching the Big Four: box breathing, positive internal dialogue, visualisation, and micro-goals. [35:19] Examining Your Internal Dialogue Meditation is a critical part of examining one's internal dialogue. How you talk to yourself has an incredible impact on your energy and motivation. The term 'feeding the fear wolf' means to allow negative dialogue, imagery, and emotions to control and weaken you. Positive thoughts, or ‘feeding the courage wolf', creates a higher vibration, bringing in more energy and access to creativity. Controlling your breathing and adding a positive mantra can be very transformative; it helps you develop concentration and increase productivity. [41:33] Imagining Victory Our belief systems are made out of statements that may or may not be true. Pay attention to your thoughts and make them positive. Know that you are competent. Although you may not feel it yet, continue meditating to get rid of that negative side. When you understand your capabilities, you can project them into the future and have an image of your success. When positive thoughts overcome negative ones, you can see your true self more clearly, and powerful thoughts start to spread. [46:10] The Zen Process Meditation is challenging, especially for active people. We have to disconnect from various distractions and be still. You can't evolve if you are constantly active; the only way to go inward is to slow down and be quiet. The first step in meditation practice is box breathing. It releases stress and brings brain-body balance. In the second step, the box pattern turns into concentration practice. The mantra is also added to train concentration and attention. The third step allows you to put less energy into concentration and observe yourself from a witness perspective. [53:00] The Importance of Doing Emotional Work Doing emotional work is the foundation of meditation. Without this, you don't get the full benefits of meditation. Meditation requires patience. The process is different for everyone. [55:44] Going into the Witness Perspective In this part of the process, you empty your mind and allow any thought streams to come in. You experience a metacognitive split here. You see the thoughts that come up from a perspective that's separate from them. Through this, you realise you're not your thoughts and emotions. And so, you have the power to change your story. When you visualise from the witness perspective, you see what your spirit wants you to see. You realise your true purpose. If you do this every day, you attract the future that's right for you, and you feel connected to the world. Through this, you eventually gain enlightenment. [01:02:43] How Meditation Can Help Athletes Meditation supports total health. Through it, you'll become more healthy, strong, and motivated. Awakened athletes and warriors who serve the world can change it. Athletes can do so because they are emotionally balanced. [01:05:25] What Is Recapitulation? Recapitulation is where we use imagery to go back into our past, relive traumatic events, recontextualise them, and forgive. It is to see yourself forgiving your younger self and changing the image and energy associated with your traumas. Awareness and identification of traumatic events is the first step to the recapitulation. Recapitulation can be used to go back and overcome big traumas and to make sure you are not dragging past regrets. Now I have a wonderful man who I've followed for a number of years. He's one of my heroes, I was a little bit of a fangirl in this interview I have to admit. But it was pretty crazy. I have Commander Mark Divine on the show. Mark is an ex-Navy SEAL. He was a Commander in the Navy Seal. He was there for 20 years, and he was a fantastic leader. He was deployed in over 45 countries around the world. He also trains, trains a lot of the SEALs who are going into BUD/S training. He was number one on his course when he went through BUD/S, and that's saying something. That's nine months of hell on earth, so if you get through that, you've got to be pretty cool, and to be number one in the end of the whole 190 that went on, that's pretty amazing. He's the author of a number of books: Staring Down the Wolf, Unbeatable Mind, and SEALFIT, and runs a number of multi-million dollar companies. As a leadership consultant, he trains, not only does he train the military, he helps people prepare for SEAL training. He also now runs through his innovative SEALFIT and Unbeatable Mind training systems. Kokoro crucible is one of his programs. He shares the same secrets with entrepreneurs, executives, and teams through his book and through his book, and through his speaking, and through his award-winning podcast. He has his own, and I have the privilege of being on that one shortly. He runs world-renowned leadership and team events. Wonderful man to talk to, someone that I really, really look up to and respect. His discipline that he brings to everything that he does is quite amazing. So I hope you enjoy the show. If you've listened to this podcast for a while, you would hear me harp on about my amazing mum and the journey that we've been on back from a massive aneurysm that left her at the age of 74 with hardly any higher function, and a prognosis that said she would never ever do anything again. And they were very, very wrong. So I want to share this book, I want to share the story, because it's a very empowering story. So if you haven't read the book Relentless, I really encourage you to go and do that. I'm really keen to get this out there because this will empower and change lives, and already has, so make sure you read Relentless. Right, over to the show with Commander Mark Divine. Hi everyone, Lisa Tamati here. I'm super, super excited. I'm jumping out of my skin, I can't sit still. I have one of my great heroes that I've followed for such a long time, so I'm a little bit, being a bit of a fangirl right now. But I'm sure I'll calm down in a minute or two. Commander Mark Divine is with us. He has such a huge history. You are known, really, as the warrior man, Unbeatable Mind, SEALFIT. You've done a heck of a lot in your life. Mark, it's just, I can't wait to share some of your insights, because what you do and what you've done is just absolutely amazing. So, welcome to Pushing the Limits. Can you give us a little bit of background, Mark, on where you come from and what you've done and how you've, just to give us a little bit of, because you, obviously you've been in the SEALs, you're a commander in the SEALs, you're a trained SEAL. So let's start there. Let you come to it. Mark Divine: Oh, my God, where to start? Lisa: Maybe childhood. Mark: I was born at a very young age in a very small town in upstate New York, a province of the United States. I'll try to keep this short because sometimes I have a few run-on sentences. Go like 40 minutes, right? We don't want that to happen. That's when we have a good time. So yeah, I was a pretty normal kid growing up, running around the woods of upstate New York, crazy family, lots of alcohol and anger. The belt would come out pretty much every other night. My brother and I would literally just provoke my father just to do it, because we stopped taking him seriously after a while. In that regard, I feel pretty fortunate that my young spirit was like, ‘You can't break me'. I realise now that we all choose our parents, let's just say, from a spiritual perspective, I certainly believe that. For certain experiences, and for a while I played the victim, woe is me. But now I look back and thank God, that really forged my mental toughness and resiliency. I had to unpack some crap from that, obviously, but it made me a Navy SEAL warrior, right? When I went through Navy SEAL training, you could not hurt me, because nothing was compared to my dad. Anyway, so that's a little aside. Upstate New York had a really— it's beautiful. I've been to your country in New Zealand. It's just absolutely gorgeous. I feel the same way about America in certain places, the much bigger. New York is one of those areas that, 6 million acres of unfettered, protected land in northern New York called the Adirondack Mountains, and that was my playground. And our summer home was on the west shore of a lake called Lake Placid where the Olympics were, you're probably familiar with that. Lisa: Yeah. Mark: There was no road access to my house. There was no TV, no internet. Still, there's finally internet after but no TV, and we would have to take a boat to get there. And so I grew up with boats and I grew up hiking in the Adirondacks and a lot of time alone in the wilderness, which is one of the reasons I became kind of an endurance athlete. I know you're an endurance lady. Because I was comfortable, being alone. I was comfortable running the trails in the mountains, and I used to have a friend, we would run up Whiteface Mountain, which is at the base or the foot of Lake Placid. Not a huge mountain, it's 4,000 feet, but you know it took a couple hours. If you're going to hike up there it takes a few hours. For us to run up there, took us 45 minutes. People used to think we were crazy. When we got to the top we would wrap our ankles and our knees and we would play tag on the way down. The trails are steep and just rocks and ruts and roots. It's amazing we didn't kill ourselves. So that was my like early childhood upbringing, nature being in the woods and in the water were my solace away from the family dynamics. That led me to be a competitive athlete in high school, 12 varsity letters and then into college, I was recruited for swimming and I became a competitive rower. And then I started triathlon. So, I was an athlete, but the athletics really was my escape and kind of my grounding rod, like it is for so many athletes, right? When I— then I wasn't sure what was going to happen. I didn't really spend a lot of time in my youth thinking about my future, I kind of accepted a lot of the stories for my family that I was going to go back and be part of the family business. That business was really the place that Divines go, you know, we don't go into the military, we don't go into academia, we don't do those things. So anyways, it's as your listeners are hearing this, they're probably like, ‘Yep, check.' Lisa: They may have done that. Mark: That's the norm, right? That's not, I wasn't off, but it's certainly not what I teach today, right? Because, right, I think if we're— if we don't follow our passion and find our calling in life, then we're going to have discomfort later on, and discomfort is going to lead to existential crisis. So I was very fortunate, incredibly fortunate that when I left college, I got a job with a big accounting firm, consulting accounting firm called Coopers and Lybrand, which became accountant, became— Lisa: You were an accountant. I mean, that makes me laugh, really. Mark: I was an accountant. Lisa: I was on the way to being an accountant too. So because of what my dad wanted, and I'm about as far from an accountant, as you can get, you know. Mark: I was too. Lisa: That's a good story. Mark: But I stuck with it long enough to become a certified public accountant, I had to pass the exam. Lisa: I didn't. Mark: I got my— I tell you what, I would rather go back to BUD/S Navy SEAL training than try that darn exam again. That told me something right there. But you know, it is a great opportunity. Because here I am, you know, I got a degree from a pretty good university called Colgate. But I didn't really have any skills. And so this job opportunity gave me and sent me to a top business school in the United States called NYU, New York University. So I got my MBA in finance, and I became a certified public accountant for four years. I got to work on a lot of different companies as a consultant and auditor. So I saw a lot. But, so that was kind of formative, in a sense, like, I learned a lot. What was probably more formative, or more substantial for me was, once I got into that suit and tie, and I was working eight hours a day, mind you, they allowed me to work only 8 or 10 hours a day. Most people in those scenarios work 15 to 20. But because they were sponsoring this small group of us to go to business school at night, they had to let us off, and then we would go to school full-time during the summer, and just come in on Fridays. It was a really cool program. So I was working 8 to 10 hours a day, going to school at night. And it's— I was an athlete, right? And I was like, ‘How am I going to, how am I going to stay as an athlete?' Right? Most people don't. Because you know, in the corporate world, and I was like, ‘I've got to, I've got to continue my athletic career.' And so I would get up really early in the morning and go for a six mile run. And then at lunchtime when all my peers would go have a beer or martini and lunch, I would go to the gym and do like this, what I now know is a high intensity functional workout, which back then nobody talked about. Because I had to go fast, and I was wanting to do a lot of different variety, and I had to be in and out of there in 45 minutes. And then after, they let me go at five o'clock in the afternoon, and my first class wasn't till 7:30. So I'm looking at that saying, ‘Look, I got two and a half hours. I could do some training here.' So one night, I wasn't sure what I was going to do. But one night, I was walking down 23rd Street, I was living on 22nd in Manhattan, and I heard these screams coming out of this building. And I stopped and I looked up and I was standing under the flag of the World Seido Karate Headquarters. ‘Oh, interesting. Maybe it's a martial art.' And I had been intrigued with the martial arts. But in Upstate New York, that just wasn't much. There's nothing as a matter of fact, in my time, and so I didn't really get a chance to study anything. So I went in there and I was floored. I was stunned by what I saw. It was an incredible art. This was the headquarters of a worldwide art called seido, they had three or 400,000 students. And the Grand Master, the founder was on the center of the floor, this Japanese man, 10th degree black belt, looked like a frickin' tank. And he was, his name was Nakamura, and he became my mentor, my first real mentor. Yeah. Now what's interesting, he says it wasn't really the karate that changed me. It was the zen training. And he is one of the few masters who kept the old ways of training the mind and the body and the spirit, and understood that they all had to be in balance, and they all were part of the package of developing these corrupted, these trainees. I loved the zen part, and there was a zen class we had every Thursday night for an hour, we would sit on that little wooden zazen bench. And honestly, this studio is the headquarter, had well over a thousand students. There were ten of us in this class, most of them black belts, and I was a white belt, and I was like, ‘Where is everyone else?' I didn't get it. And then there wasn't a lot of understanding or talk about meditation back then. But boy, I did this thing to do meditation. I had all the usual kind of resistance to it, and my monkey mind going all over the place and wondering if it really worked. I trusted Nakamura and the way he acted and presented himself as a character, just who he was, was so different than any other human I've ever seen or experienced. And I was like, ‘There's got to be something to this, right?' So I stuck with it. And it literally changed almost every aspect of who I was and how I saw the world and what I perceived to be my calling and my purpose in life. And it was sitting on that bench that I realised that I was going down the wrong path with this MBA, CPA, working in the corporate world. Even if I went back to the family business, it just wasn't what I was meant to do. That was the first time in my life that I allowed myself to examine my core story that said, this is who I am, and to recognise it was built on a lie. Lisa: Yeah. And you weren't following your true path. Mark: I wasn't following my true path. But my true path wasn't exactly laid out for me, in those meditation sessions. It was more like the archetypal energy in the arc of my life was shown to me and that that art was to be a warrior, and then it would lead somewhere else that wasn't quite clear to me, but the warrior part was very strong. And it didn't— I didn't get messages while I was meditating, saying, ‘You're going to be a Navy SEAL.' What I got was ‘warrior' and, ‘You're going down the wrong path with this business stuff.' It was when I finally started to accept that, that I learned about the Navy SEALs, right. Remember, this is 1987, 88, there was no TV shows and movies, no famous names. Lisa: They weren't famous back then. Mark: Nobody knew them. In fact, the few people that did know them were like, crazy guys. So I— one day, I was walking home from work, and I came across a Navy recruiting station. I didn't even know it was that but I saw a poster in the window. I took a double take of this poster. I was like, well, the title of that poster was, ‘Be Someone Special'. And it had Navy SEALs doing really cool shit. Jumping out of airplanes, yeah, blocking out little mini submarines, sneaking through the water. It's just so cool for me. I just sat there kind of transfixed, looking at that, and I didn't say anything about the SEALs. They said, US Navy, and I was, ‘Huh, interesting.' So I went back and I talked to the recruiters so what, ‘Who are those people in that poster?' They said, ‘Oh, they're crazy Navy SEALs. You don't want to do that.' I said, ‘Yeah, I do. Tell me more.' So long story short. I started that whole CPA, MBA bullshit, 1985. In November of 1989, I got my black belt, I got my MBA, I got my CPA and I was on a bus. I was on a bus to Officer Candidate School. Lisa: That was the next mission. Mark: On to the next mission. I wandered away from, I walked away from probably what would today's dollars be $200,000 salary to get paid $500 a month? Lisa: Wow. That takes— Mark: For heading off as a candidate. Lisa: That takes courage. That alone takes courage. Mark: But I didn't question that. You know, I knew it. I knew this is the right path. And when I got to SEAL training, what we called BUD/S, basic underwater demolition SEAL training. Man, I felt like I was home, and there was no way that they were going to get me to quit. I mean, other people said this, but I said this very clearly: ‘You have to kill me to get me out of here.' And I don't think they can legally do that. Although they sure do try. Lisa: It can get pretty close. Mark: It can get pretty close, yeah. I sailed through SEAL training. We had 185 in my class, hardcore, awesome guys. And 19 of us graduated. I graduated number one in my class and my entire team, my boat crew that we trained together from day one, graduated with me. Lisa: Wow. Mark: So there's something about that meditation training, Nakamura and the skills, and the values on team building and taking my eyes off myself and putting them on others, the taming of the ego, it really allowed me to help lead my team to success, right? We made it about the team and not about me, and everyone else was about them. And they— the team's, the instructors are, their job is to select the next crop of teammates that they will go to war with. Lisa: Yeah. Mark: So what they're looking for is not who's the toughest guy, not who's the best athlete— Lisa: Not the coolest, yeah. Mark: Yeah, exactly, not the best looking whatever. It's, ‘Are you a great teammate? Are you gonna have my back?' So that's something that I guess I demonstrated. Lisa: Wow, that's a brilliant intro into your background. What fascinates me with you too is that you like— you know, because the SEALs are known for being hard asses. I mean, you know they are hard people, they have been through tough stuff, they go through tough stuff every single day that you're out there. But you've got this meditation side, you do a heck of a lot of yoga. You do, you talk about authenticity, and I know you don't like the word vulnerability, but you're quite, you're open about the stuff. That's quite the opposite of most, in the training that you get. I suppose this comes from Nakamura being your master, that he taught you that very early on, they're sort of the both sides of the coin. I get that question quite a lot, too. When they— when people read what I've done and achieved and so on, they're like, ‘Wow, you must be a super hard ass.' And then they meet you and realise that you're actually very vulnerable or cry a lot. I'm very full of mistakes and problems and stuff that I'm working on at all times. But the difference is, I think, that you embrace both sides. And that you are always in pursuit of excellence, and you're always improving, and you're always developing. And I found that a really interesting combination in someone who's so physically tough and mentally tough to have had both sides. Was that a hard thing in the beginning with the SEALs? Mark: I think you're right. I did learn that initially from Nakamura and so every day, you know, I was so committed. Every day I would stretch and I would do my breathing practices and my visualisation while I was going through SEAL training. Every day in the SEALs, I do some version of that. It was you know, it's difficult for a military operator to keep a daily dedicated practice going if you're up 24 hours a day, and you're in combat. Honestly, when I went to Iraq and combat, I meditated and trained yoga every single day. And it had a profound effect on me, right? In the war zone, all my teammates are just getting frayed at the edges, and I felt strong and confident, and I knew I was going to survive, because I did, I had that vision. I was going to be home with my child, you know, my wife and son. So it came first from Nakamura, and then I started into yoga. It's not my career, it's important people know, I did plus-20 years in the Navy SEAL, but about nine years active duty and 11 years reserve. So as reserve, so nine years after I joined, even while I was on active duty, I started to get into yoga. But when I got off active duty I had more time. I went full on in, and that was because— actually it is a blessing in disguise. I was living in San Diego and there was no seido karate out here. Otherwise I would have gotten back into seido karate. So first I got into something called goju karate, I got a black belt there. It was very similar to seido but it lacked the spirit and like the mental, the meditation, so I didn't really stick with that. And then I got into ninjutsu, thinking ninjutsu might be a little bit more spiritual. I really liked the teacher but he was a horrible business guy, so right on the cusp of getting my black belt, he shut his school down and ran out of money. And then I found yoga kind of about the same time as ninjitsu. But I didn't really understand it until I read Patanjali's yoga sutras and also Paramahansa Yogananda's autobiography yoga. And those just absolutely shattered my paradigm of what was possible and what yoga was, as the oldest science of mental and personal development. So I fully went into yoga and I ended up getting 700 hours of certifications and started my own yoga program and wrote a book about it eventually, but, and started teaching it to SEALs. And so all this I was still a SEAL officer. Because I didn't retire from the SEALs in 2011, but I was able to do all this and build a business that started to teach Navy SEALs everything I would have been learning. And that's called SEALFIT. That was the business that everything I've been learning and applying in my own life, right? And this was this integrated model of development. It started with Nakamura where it wasn't just about the physical. It was about physical, it was about mental, it was about emotional, it was about intuitional and spiritual aspects of our being. In that, I learned that if you train those together, then you will integrate, you'll become whole again. What that means is you'll become more, you have access to more of yourself. You have to put more potential. You can maintain peak performance, you can serve more profoundly, you can do more, you've got way more energy, way more enthusiasm, way more motivation, way more peace of mind, way more clarity. It's extraordinary. In a sense, it's like coming back to who we are. That's why I call it integration. In fact, the word ‘yoga' means union or integration, and so does is zen, believe it or not. Those practices and traditions are really all about becoming whole as a human again, as opposed to fragments and separate, separate from yourself and separated from others. So I stumbled upon this, and created my own path or my own model. And then when I had started to teach it to SEALs and special operators, and other military operators, a ton of people, even from New Zealand, some of your listeners might have been to my training. Then I started to recognise that, ‘Wow, this is necessary in our culture.' Because most Westerners have no connection to this, this way of living of, taking care of the internal while you are working in the external, the yin and the yang, the balance between being and doing, becoming whole again, so you can do your work from a whole perspective as opposed to a fragmented, separated self. Which leads to suboptimal results, at a minimum, in at least a flat out crisis or destruction at the maximum level. And that's, we're seeing that both in from the investment in violence, military build-up, conflict, as well as environmental degradation is because human beings have not learned to be whole, and they don't recognise that we're all interconnected. And every one of our thoughts, every one of our emotions, every one of our actions has an implication or impact on the whole. Lisa: Yep. This is really good. Because I think, we live our lives very much in the doing. We're busy all day, we're busy with a billion million things, we're running businesses, we're— we've got families and so on. And it's really hard to find that stillness. And I know that even as an athlete who, I think for years, I was just headed through the wall, you know, taking— Mark: Most people are, that's how they learn, until they hit the wall, right? Lisa: Yeah, no, I hit the wall a couple of dozen times before, because I was a bit thick. I didn't wake up, said, ‘Hang on, this stuff isn't working anymore.' And it works when you're 20. And it works when you're 25. And it works when you're 30. And but when you start hitting your 40s, and you're still smashing the crap out of your body, and you're not really not refilling the tank, and you're not re-examining what the hell are you doing, I think that's when the wheel started, when the wheel started to fall off for me. And I'm like, ‘Hang on a minute, this— why isn't my body doing like, it wasn't what it was supposed to do?' And when you've grown up, though, with that expectation of, you have to be tough, you have to be hard. And I grew up different to you. But I had a dad who was very, he was an awesome father, but he was a hard ass. And he expected you to be tough and mentally tough, physically tough. He didn't really tolerate a lot of weakness or sickness or anything like that. And he was an amazing dad, but he pushed really hard. And that sort of makes you think, well, you have to be hard all the time. And then when you break down, then it's you being weak. Instead of looking at the whole picture, and quieting the mind and doing these things like meditation was for me. Yeah, I know, I hear it's really important, but I can't sit still. I need it twice as much. Mark: Yeah, well, there's a reason for that. It'd be fun to talk about. But think about, when I reflect back, and my SEAL training and all these other guys were trying to be hard, and they had the same thinking, because America has a real soft side to it. But there's a lot of freakin' warriors in America. And we have that same kind of what your dad's talking about. Gotta be hard. Like, there's no room for weakness. It's got to be tough. You think about the metaphor, the guys who quit were just bad asses. Yeah, why did they quit? They quit because they didn't— they lacked the emotional strength to understand what was happening to them in their either most extreme moments of crisis or moments of just doubt, right? And then they're like, so they let uncertainty in, let doubt creep in and corrupt their decision making and then, one mistake leads to an injury we call, quinjury. And you've probably seen this in endurance athletes' is when all of a sudden the injury kind of crops up and then the person's out. And then really, reality is they created that injury to quit. Lisa: Yeah, because they wanted a way out. Mark: Because they wanted a way out. It's very subconscious. It's not prepared. It's not preparing properly. It's not recovering properly. It's not understanding that this is a long game and getting your ego out of the way. Lisa: It used to prop up for me every— before any big race, that in the week ahead of that race, I would get sick. And I would, I'm sure that that was my subconscious trying to stop me do it. Mark: Yeah, I've given you an out, right. And so— Lisa: You've got a cold, you've got the flu. Mark: Think about the metaphor between, if you got a tsunami coming, like, consider tsunami a metaphor for a crisis, or a big challenge, like BUD/S or a 50 mile or 100 mile race or something like that. There's a tsunami coming. Would you rather be a mighty oak facing that tsunami, or would you rather be like a reed? Lisa: A reed, definitely. Mark: Yeah, if so, when I went to SEAL training, I tried to be the reed, right? I tried to be really flexible. I didn't let anything bother me. You know, structures would come up and, during Hell Week for us, which week seven back then. But now it's more like week three or four, seven days non-stop training around the clock, no sleep. Everyone's heard about that. Like a day, Thursday, like the day before, we're over it most of it, we're down to 60, 35, maybe 45 or 50, actually, in our class from 185 already. And instructor evil comes over and he's like, ‘Mark, I don't like you, I'm gonna make you quit.' And in my mind, I was like, ‘Good luck.' And I even think I started— Lisa: That confidence! Mark: I don't know, it was just my spiritual strength saying, ‘No, you're not going to get me to quit, you can't.' And so I actually was challenging him in my mind, and it must come through on my face. And he goes, ‘I'm gonna wipe that smirk right out that effing face.' And he just made me start doing 8-count bodybuilders, which are like a burpee, basically. And I remember in my mind thinking, ‘Okay, all right. Let's do this.' Right? All I got to do is one 8-count bodybuilder at a time, until he gets tired. Lisa: Until he gets tired. Mark: Exactly! So that's what I did. I just did one. I just want, did one 8-count bodybuilder. And then I just did one 8-count bodybuilder. And then I just did one 8-count bodybuilder. And when we got up to like— Lisa: You broke him. Mark: 800. Lisa: Holy heck. Mark: Which is nothing, right? I did 24 hours of burpees last, a couple of years ago, as part of our challenge. We did, check this out: we did 22 million burpees as a tribe to raise money for veterans. And part of that was to break a world record where our six-person team, you would love this, three men and three women, we did 36,000 burpees in 24 hours, so I did 7,500 or something like that. So 700 is nothing. Back then I didn't know if it was going to be 700 or 7,000 or 70,000. But he got bored, and he walked away at about 700, and I have to say, that worked. That's a good strategy. Lisa: What about the burning in the muscles and the exhaustion and the running out of glycogen— Mark: You can do anything, one at a time. Lisa: Wow. Mark: It's just like in a race, I'm sure you get to a point where all you have to do all you are saying to yourself is, ‘Just one more step.' Lisa: One more step. Yep, absolutely. Mark: Same thing. We call them micro goals. And so we teach— I started teaching these to SEALs, and the best guys already did this. But now we teach it, the SEALs are teaching what I call the Big Four. And they're teaching box breathing for controlling their stress, they're teaching positive internal dialogue, and mantras. And they're teaching visualisation, visualise every event and visualise what the end state looks like for you and then visualise the mission and whatnot. And then micro goals. Like go to BUD/S thinking about eight months of training, you go to BUD/S thinking about, ‘What do I got to do today to win this?' And then when today gets hard, you just collapse. ‘What do I need to do to win this evolution or event that I'm in?' And then when that gets harder, you know, it's like, ‘What do I got to do to get to the next five minutes?' Anytime you quit, or you have the thought, ‘Well, this sucks. I think I want to quit.' You just say, ‘Well, let me just push through to another— let me just push through another five minutes.' Or, ‘Let me just get to that berm up there,' if it's a run, or Log-Pt could go on forever. ‘Let me just finish this evolution, then I'll make a decision.' And so you just keep kicking the can down the road of the pain and the quit decision and the suffering and eventually the suffering goes away, because that's a temporary state. Lisa: And this is like that you just dropped so much golden inside of two minutes. Take a couple of those because these are things that I've took me 20 years to learn. Mark: Play it back in slow motion. Lisa: You know, like this. That's how that's how I break down. You know, every mess of the like, I remember and my listeners have heard me tell the story. But I ran 2,250 kilometers from New Zealand for charity. Mark: Wow. Good for you. Holy cow. Lisa: Yeah, no, it's like, but I've been so busy in the build-up doing— I've been at other races around the world, done Badwater in the States, just come back from that, just launched a book and then I'm standing at the start line. I've been so busy in the thing that I actually hadn't thought about actually running the— because I was just like, ‘Yeah, I got everything, sweet.' And then I'm starting at the start line and I just had a panic attack, like the first real big panic attack. And I'm not, because you're staring down the barrel of this— Mark: Like, holy shit, this is too high to climb. What the heck have I done? Lisa: What the frick was I thinking? And I went home, we had media, we had all my crew and everybody there and I just went away behind the one of the cars and got my mum, my mummy ‘cuz she's my safe place, went to my mummy and I just bawled my eyes out. And said, ‘Mum I can't do this, I don't know what the frick I was thinking. I can't, and there's no way out.' And mum's just like, ‘Hey,' as she hugged me, as mums do. And she said, ‘You don't need to do 2,250 today. All I want you to focus on is that little box up there,' you know, that was a couple of hundred meters up the road. ‘That's what you got to do right now. And then you're going to, you're going to get through to lunchtime, and then you're gonna have lunch. And then we're going to get through to this and that.' She just broke it down into pieces, and she took all of that load that I was just like, ‘Oh my God, this is huge,' and she broke it into one step at a time, basically. And that was some of the greatest learnings that I've taken away for every event that I've done when— and there have been times when I've broken and I've just crashed on the ground. I don't know how to get up and people have come along and they've got me up and walked me through the next few steps. Or the next— and that has gotten you over that hump, you know? And I just wait, you know, that's so much gold, right there, what you've just said. I think if we can do that in daily life so when we're faced with some big scary thing coming at us, how do I just get through this moment? And we're very— if you can get through these impulses, you know, like there's 30 seconds, through the 30 seconds almost, sometimes you can get to a place where you can cope again. And then you can sort of get back up. Mark: And this goes back to like the internal dialogue. Most people don't examine their internal dialogue. And this is where meditation is so critical. And you can also consider, like running or swimming or biking, endurance sports generally, are also very good for examining internal dialogue, because you're going to meet resistance. How you talk to yourself has an incredible impact on your energy and your motivation. Literally, we use the terminology ‘feeding the courage wolf' versus ‘feeding the fear wolf'. Feeding fear is allowing negative dialogue and negative imagery and negative emotions to kind of run the rule the roost of your psychology, and that weakens you. Negative thoughts demonstrably weaken you as a human being. Lisa: Yeah, because— Mark: They're gonna not just weaken your motivation but literally musculature-wise you get weaker, and that's been proven through kinesiology. So positive thoughts create a higher vibration, which bring more energy, more access to more creativity and motivation. And so you got to train positive thoughts. That's what I mean by feeding the courage wolf. And the more you feed the courage wolf by training positive mantras and positive thoughts, then the more you starve the fear wolf until he goes away, until he just doesn't have the food anymore. And those patterns dry up and blow away. So I created a bunch of positive mantras that I would say in the SEAL training, and they're still with me today. As soon as I start a hard workout, they kick back in. ‘Feeling good, I'm looking good, ought to be in Hollywood. Feeling good, I'm looking good, ought to be in Hollywood. I can get out of me in Hollywood. I've got this easy day, piece of cake. Boo yeah, hey, got this. Easy day, piece of cake. Boo yeah, hey.' And then I'll synchronise that with my breathing. So, hardcore, run three steps and inhale 1, 2, 3, ‘I've got this. Easy day. Piece of cake.' Exhale 1, 2, 3. Right. Lisa: And the rhythm is good too, hey. Mark: Yeah, exactly. So I was synchronising those before, the big four. The first skill I said, box breathing, it's really breath control. Running, anything you're doing, always breathing through your nose as best as possible, and controlling the breathing and creating a nice rhythmic pattern with the breathing. It's going to be different depending upon what you're doing. If you're lifting weights, gonna be one thing, if you're running another, swimming another. Swimming creates its own little breathing patterns, because head in the water versus out of the water. But just starting there, controlling your breathing and adding a positive mantra, or a positive internal statement that's linked to the breath is transformative. Not only does it keep you in the game athletically or whatever, but when you do this during your regular day, day in and day out, you're training your mind to be really positive and to be very concentrated. So you're developing concentration power. So you're turning your mind from like a scattered floodlight, which is flickering on and off, the monkey mind, to a very, very concentrated laser beam that you can point that laser beam on anything, any task, any project, and it deeply improves your productivity, the ability to get things done, you know, significantly. So check out all the details: patron.lisatamati.com. And thanks very much for joining us. Mark: And then the imagery, right, the imagery. Well, let me backup. The other thing that that process of paying attention to the quality of your thoughts and changing them to positive thoughts, and increasing your concentration power, as you start to look at the dialogue too, in your head. What is actually going on? And you recognise that typically what's going on in your head is a series of statements that are also based upon belief systems, but it can be framed as questions. When people say, ‘I don't think I can do this,' what they're really saying is, ‘Am I worthy? Am I competent?' We can begin to recognise that our belief systems are based upon questions and statements that may or may not be true. And so you want to take a look at the ones that are questionable, especially if they have a negative quality, and say, ‘Is that true?' And you realise, ‘It's not true. I am worthy. I am competent.' Now, I may not feel that yet. But the more I tell myself that and the more I can see that in myself, and the more that I meditate and actually feel into my worthiness and my confidence, and the more I work to eradicate the emotional side or shadow that may have, be tied to related to that — for me, it was because of the childhood abuse, I kind of felt a little unworthiness and whatnot, even though I was capable as a SEAL, it's still kind of plagued me for a while, until I had to stare down that wolf of fear and be like, ‘Yeah, that's all bullshit. That's just a story that I'm holding on to and I was able to release all that energy and feel that worthiness now.' Then that leads to a whole nother set of questions, which are extraordinarily empowering, right. So when I— understanding your capability as a human being, the potential that you have, the power that we have, you can then project that into the future and say, ‘What does victory look like for me?' Right? ‘If I'm going to run this 2,000 meter, or 2,000 kilometer race, and I'm going to raise money for charity, what is that for? What's my ‘why'? And what does victory look like?' You get a clear sense of what victory looks like. And then you can even do that with the micro parts. So you chunked it down into 100 kilometer segments, let's just say. What does victory look like for that segment for the next five days? What does it look like for today? What does it look like— this is, in a sense, what your mom was doing, but she was doing it from the other way around. What does it look like for the next six hours? What does it look like for the next three hours? You get a clear picture because you're asking the right questions, and you're winning in your mind before you step foot into the battlefield. So asking really powerful questions like, what does victory look like? Who is on my team? Who's got my back? Why am I doing this? How is it related to my purpose in my life? These are the questions that we start asking, because now we've drowned out the negative incessant chatter, which is just holding us back and distracting us. We've created this space, and I use the metaphor still water pond. We've taken our mind and we've created it instead of this choppy, you know, bouncing all over the place, turbulent thought stream, largely negative, we've calmed down. And it's now this still water, and on this still water, you can look at it, you can really see a reflection clearly. So that's kind of a nice thing, you get to see your true self more clearly, but also, what you drop into that water in terms of the thought is going to ripple out and affect everything. So you end up dropping thought seeds that are really powerful, instead of chaotic and negative. Lisa: Because there's this whole, these automatic negative thoughts and if we think about how we evolved that was there for our survival. Because we needed to be aware of dangers and things in our environment, so we were always looking for the bad thing that was going to come at us. But in our world now, where we just, we have this constant chatter in our head. And it's, you know, I've certainly dealt with this for a long time, and I and I fought against the whole sitting still thing, and focusing inwards. Because it's very unpleasant, when you having— when you want to move, you just want to move. Give me a hard ass workout, any day, over meditation, you know, because it's just like this energy, this agitation, but that's why I need to do it. So that I can break through that piece of the puzzle. And then you can tap into strengths that you didn't know you had, and quietness, and then you start to really reflect and like, for me, it has only really been, even in the last few months where I've been— My dad passed away, and it was one hell of a battle for his life. And I, yeah, it was a real— I was fighting against the system. And it was a mess of battle. It's all good when you win, but it's also good when you don't win. And so this one, just been— I was a bit of an existential crisis after that, because I'd lost this battle for my dad, who I loved dearly. And it made me go inward. It made me start to really question some of the biggest things because you start realising that life's short, shorter than I think it's gonna be. You want to understand why, and then going inside and doing some deep work and doing some trauma work and doing all that sort of hard stuff has been great. There's always good that comes out of shit. You never ever want to go through things like that, but when you do, you can always turn them into something, a learning curve of some sort. And having that, I was listening to you with Bedros Keulian, who's also is another one that I— Mark: Yeah, he's an awesome guy. Lisa: Yeah, he's just a rock star. in you, when you were talking about how you went through the zen process where you were, for a start, you started meditating, but you're just learning to quiet the mind. And then after a few months, that became then mindfulness. Where you're starting to observe yourself from outside in splitting the mind or somehow you put this and you're actually observing yourself as this higher self, if you like. Can you explain that a little bit? And how does that— Mark: Yeah, so glad you brought that up. Because I wanted to talk about that. Because you're right. It's— meditation is hard, especially for active people, which everybody, everybody listening, everybody in the Western world is pretty much hyperactive. Yep, that's what we're taught; it's reality. Like, ‘Go, go, go. Do, do, do.' We get over-committed. Now we have, you know, constant distraction with our iPhones and social media, and it's just gonna get worse, worse, worse. Wait until we get plugged in with a neural link, you know, like, wow. So we got to push back against that. The only way to push back against that is to disconnect from all that and to sit still, or stand still, or take a walk. But don't do anything, right. Don't do it for a goal. Don't do it to check it off a box. Don't do it to be the best meditator you know. Lisa: Tick that box. Mark: It doesn't work, right? Lisa: That was what I was going to— Max: There's no goals here. Right? It's about becoming still, getting that clarity and this still water mind back, if you ever had it, but we had it when we were kids, of course, but in a different sense. So that you can evolve. You know, let me start there. I think that there's two reasons we're on this planet. One is to evolve to become the best version, highest and best version of yourself in this lifetime. The second is to align with our calling or our purpose. And those two really kind of go hand-in-hand or hand-in-glove. You can't evolve if you're constantly doing. You actually will stay stuck. You'll keep getting your ass handed to you. You'll keep suffering. You'll keep feeling victimised. And you'll keep looking outward for the solutions. And you'll keep blaming other people, or society, or taxes, or the government, or God. Lisa: A lot of fingers are turned. Mark: The answers lie within, right? And so the only way to go inward is to slow down and just be quiet. Right? So it's imperative. Now, why do most people fail? A) Because everything I've just talked about, they haven't been taught this. And B) because they're body mind, their body brain is very, very agitated. It's amped up because you've been taking all this stress on throughout your life. So what I teach is that the first step in meditation practice isn't mindfulness. It isn't a mantra practice. It's just a box breathe, which is a pattern breathe, five-count in, five-count hold, and five-count out, five-count hold, or four, or three, if you have trouble with that. And just let that nostril breathing in that massaging that the vagus nerve, stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system. And it's bleeding off stress and bringing your body brain back into my balance. Lisa: Yep. Mark: When your body brain is back into balance, your brain is going to experience that as a lower frequency rate. Lower frequency means fewer thoughts, right? If you're in gamma, it's like tick-tick, popcorn brain. But if you're in alpha, like listening to beautiful music, classical music, or you're maybe doing some journaling, your mind stops racing. It starts to get into— Lisa: A lovely alpha state of focus. Mark: Yeah, and so the box breathing practice trains your mind to get back into alpha, trains your body to de-stress, and you do this. It might take you months, usually about three months. I— my clients have this extraordinary calming that comes over them. And they're already changed. But this is, you know, just the preparatory work, right? This also, for those who are working on their physical structure in their health and their weight, this also has enormous benefits because you begin to feel a lot better. And you begin, you know, you're starting to breathe in that life force again. You're getting more oxygen with every breath, and you're retraining the breathing patterns so this becomes your more natural state. If you, let me just pause here, if you train for 20 minutes a day, have a five-count box breath, that's three breaths per minute, over time, and might take a year or more, you're gonna eventually settle into a natural breath pattern of six breaths per minute, which is now proven to the optimal. Lisa: Exactly. Mark: I've been doing this for years, I never knew that, it just settled out there to where six breaths per minute through the nose was standard for me, or a standard, and that's what will happen to you. Lisa: Yep. Mark: Yeah. But those are full breaths, full exhales, getting all the toxins out there. Lisa: Basically the exhale. Mark: It's enormously beneficial for your body, and everything starts to come back into balance: you start losing weight, you start eating better. Because you want to eat better, you start sleeping b

In two previous episodes we have explored the Art Of Dreaming By Carlos Castaneda a fascinating book discussing the art of lucid dreaming. In previous episodes we have discussed the inorganic beings and the assemblage point. In this episode I review a chapter from the art of dreaming by Castaneda in which the the shadow is discussed and we are introduced to Castanedas description of the inorganic beings, alien energy, and dream emissaries. In this episode I review a chapter from the art of dreaming by Castaneda in which the Casteneda travels to the inorganic world and don juan further explains the sorcerers art of dreaming as. This is follows up on the previouse episodxe on the assemblage point and inorganic beings. Here we get a further exploration to Castanedas journey in lucid dreaming as he visits the word of inorganic beings. In this episode I review a chapter from the art of dreaming by Castaneda in which the assemblage point is discussed and we are introduced to Castanedas description of the inorganic beings, alien energy, and dream emissaries. Here we get an introduction to Castanedas journey in lucid dreaming with Don Juan's explanation that the old sorcerers gained their power through the dreaming world. Not all fairy tales have happy endings. Known as the feathered serpent, Quetzalcoatl has been worshipped in various forms by cultures throughout the region that is now Mexico. According to the Toltecs, he was initially a mortal priest-king named Ce Acatl who suffered a horrific fall from grace. He sacrificed himself to save humanity from a coming disaster and, in the process, was transformed into a god.

It is said that the Toltec culture fell when the king and high priest Quetzalcoatl left the city of Tula. In the afterword, we explore the reasons for his departure, the Chichimec origin of the Toltecs, and we introduced the Nonoalcas.Read the transcript
A strange journey, an encounter with power, and finding the Nagual. In this chapter, Koyote relates the strange story of his encounter with a magical creature, an epic journey with his childhood friend, a brush with death, and the moment in which he found the Nagual, his benefactor that was to connect him with his Toltec lineage. “There is a technology that can be applied to consciousness itself... The basis to uncover the secrets of alchemy the Toltecs had lies in the understanding of the true nature of reality, the true nature of our essence, and the true nature of our perception. To fully know this triad would give you the ability to do anything that is your will to do. External reality is all made of vibration. Our true natures is a point of view of the supreme consciousness, the all-pervading eye of God. The mechanism of perception is the union of vibration with sentience, and mastery of this is the supreme power.”
Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. joins Rev. Jacquie to reveal the seven secrets to healthy, happy relationships. Don Miguel is a Nagual, a Toltec Master of Transformation. He is a direct descendant of the Toltecs of the Eagle Knight lineage and is the son of don Miguel Ruiz. By combining the wisdom of his family’s traditions with the knowledge gained from his own personal journey, he now helps others realize their own path to personal freedom.
In this chapter, I read chapter 3 of The Teachings of a Toltec Survivor: Sleep Is Your First Tool. A technique is presented where the force of the sleeping state is used to awaken the machine. We have to start where we are, and use what we have at hand. This chapter discusses the principles of practical work on self, and illustrates the mastery the Toltecs had over their Tonal.
Who were the Toltecs? What was their procedure which would result in a far saner human being present? Does that sound like a tall order? Of course it is! That is why we need people like Mario Gomez Mayorga who have really walked down that path and applied the teachings to those who really need it. People with existential dilemmas, depression, physical disease and most common of all simple grief. The modern world is soul destroying especially for the sensitive of heart as we all know too well. Where to go? Who to see? How to overcome these profound issues of the inner person, the one deep below the name and the title? Mario shares over three decades of experience mainly in the jungle environment of his home base in Palenque and shows how the ancient Toltecs are still here. Their way of teaching will amaze you. Even Mario did not know how he was learning until he had learned! But what he learned has proven to be very precious, not only for himself but for the people who come to walk the path through the jungle with him from all over the world. A remarkable healer indeed if that is what we can call the remarkable work of Mario Gomez Mayorga. There is no name for this really..
I read chapter one of my book, The Teachings of a Toltec Survivor. In this chapter, the origins of the Toltec lineage are presented, along with certain principles of esoteric work the Toltecs used. The image of temple prostitutes is used here to illustrate the way in which work on self can happen, and the relationship between the outer world and the inner, by presenting their relationship not as dual, but triune. Here, the world we will use to work on, the tonal, is not just the inner world of the mind and the outer world of the senses. This episode is all about self-talk and mainly negative self-talk. It's a topic that is very important and personal to me and I think the listeners will find great value in this episode. We start by defining self-talk as that voice in our heads that constantly talks to us. For some of us this voice can be very negative and even downright abusive. This voice has a major influence on how we experience our lives. And while this is something so many of us deal with, nobody ever talks about it, we never learn about it, and we mostly pretend it isn't a problem. But for many of us it's a big problem. We talk about the difference between us and that voice. We are not that voice, though most of us think we are. Then I tell you the truth: that voice is a liar and it lies to you all day long. But once you believe the lies they become the truth. And when this happens we reset ourselves. I discuss why the mind lies to us when it should have our best interests at heart. And I define that voice for what it is: our voice of knowledge, and that knowledge is contaminated by lies. We talk about where the self-rejection leads us and it's not a place you want to be. But we all have the power to change our self-talk We do this by challenging the voice of knowledge and catching it in its lies and proving it to be a liar. Then I reference the fact that we've known about this liar inside our heads for thousands of years. The Christian faith knew it, the Toltecs knew it, The Buddhists knew it, the Stoics knew it, and modern psychology knows it. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is rooted in this concept. Then we get into how to change the voice inside our heads, how to rewrite our story. It's a simple process, but it takes time and is easier said than done. And for this week's Call-to-Action we have 2 assignments. First, we start to challenge the voice in our head, we catch it red-handed and prove to ourselves that it is indeed a liar. And once we understand this the process becomes so much easier. The second part of this week's assignment is to talk about this, to raise awareness. If you are depressed or know someone that's depressed then I encourage you to reach out. There's too much shame and stigma around mental health issues and people are reluctant to admit to having problems and seeking help. We need to eliminate the stigmas and start having meaningful dialogue about this. 45,000 people in America commit suicide every year and the rate of child and teen suicide is the highest it's ever been in history. Aren't we living in the best times? Isn't this the best it's ever been? How is this possible. It's time for action and it's time for change. And that starts with all of us. Thanks for listening. Don Jose Ruiz – Vocal HeritageAired Thursday, 23 May 2019, 9:00 AM EST / 6:00 AM PST“The human voice is the organ of the soul” – Henry Wadsworth LongfellowThe ancient art of carrying and transmitting information through oral tradition has exponential potential in the present-day New Information Paradigm. Humanity as a whole and sound organism carries all the information necessary for preservation and continuation. Messengers offer the human organism explicit direction and are attuned to the physical, emotional and electromagnetic dimension of the human voice as a powerful vessel for information storage and dissemination. Today’s scientific application of sound for medical purposes and wellness practices are becoming more commonplace as we integrate our collective appreciation of energy, frequency and vibration also prescribed in the ancient arts, such as oral traditions. Join voice master Kara Johnstad and don Jose Ruiz for a soulful exploration of the mysterious ways the human voice transmits information through energy and matter, maintaining and restoring coherency into the subliminal.About: don Jose Ruiz, is a Toltec Master of Transformation & Modern day Shaman. “The Toltecs believe that every human is an artist, and the art we create is our lives.” —Don Miguel Ruiz Today's guest uses practical examples and guides us through conceptual, transpersonal art experiments to demonstrate how we can use the power of art to access our inner child, express our buried emotions, and use any form of art as a catalyst to transform our lives. Pure creativity is an activity that has no predefined destination or purpose, while applied creativity is an activity that always has a goal or application in mind. Pure creativity can be seen as a kind of play, while applied creativity is usually seen as work. Michele Laub believes the path of transformation is often revealed on a journey to a sacred site and she leads guided spiritual journeys to Teotihuacan, The Pyramid City in Central Mexico, the Ancient Home of the Toltecs, known as Artists of the Spirit. Michele explains the history of Teotihuacan and what happens to a traveler on a spiritual journey, the connection of don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements, Toltec Wisdom and Teotihuacan, and how you can have an experience in Teotihuacan with a Toltec teacher.
“In Tenochtitlan, Tezcoco and other cities there were groups of wise men known as tlamatinime. These scholars carried on the study of the ancient religious thinking of the Toltecs, which Tlacaelel had transformed into a mystical exaltation of war. Despite the popularity of the cult of the war-god, Huitzilopochtli, the tlamatinime preserved the old belief in a single supreme god, who was known under a variety of names. Sometimes he was called Tloque-Nahuaque, “Lord of the Close Vicinity,” sometimes Ipalnemohuani, “Giver of Life,” sometimes Moyocoyatzin, “He who Creates Himself.” He also had two aspects, one masculine and one feminine. Thus he was also invoked as Ometeotl, “God of Duality,” or given the double names Ometecuhtli and Omecihuatl, “Lord and Lady of Duality,” Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl, “Lord and Lady of the Region of Death,” and others.” ― Miguel León-Portilla, The Broken Spears: The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico A stone of legend is hidden in a temple lost to time. Miguel Jr. has taken the lessons of his father and grandmother and discovered his own personal freedom. Being able to apply his teachings to the world around him gave Miguel Jr. a new understanding of the lessons his father and grandmother had passed onto him, once again giving him the desire to pass on his beliefs. The ancient Toltecs believed that life as we perceive it is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and all of our dreams come together to make the Dream of the Planet. Problems arise when we forget that the dream is just a dream and fall victim to believing that we have no control over it. The Mastery of Self takes the Toltec philosophy of the Dream of the Planet and the personal dream and explains how a person can: Wake up, Liberate themselves from illusory beliefs and stories and Live with authenticity. http://www.miguelruizjr.comSenior Vice President of Worldwide Sales Operations at TiVo, a Fortune 500 Company, keynote speaker, leadership mentor and bestselling author Amy Van Atta Slater transforms challenges into opportunities. The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our Personal Dream, and these come together to form the Dream of the Planet, or the world in which we live. But, problems arise when our perception of the Dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama and judgement (of ourselves and others) because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we hae the power to change our Dream is we choose. This week, Dr. Kelly interviews bestselling author and teacher don Miguel Ruiz Jr about his new book, Mastery of Self, which takes the Toltec philosophy of the Dream of the Planet and offers you a road map to reclaiming your Authentic Self. We will discuss how the tools of awareness, understanding and unconditional love can free you from any inhibiting beliefs, stories or ideas that are keeping you from living the best life possible. We will discuss how to discover who you are the deepest level, which often lies just beyond any conditioning or domestication you have acquired throughout your life. Once you touch your Authentic Self, you will find that you no longer need to distort the world around you to fit your perception of what it 'should' be.

Charlotte View welcomes don Miguel Ruiz, Jr. He is a Toltec Master of Transformation. He is a direct descendant of the Toltecs of the Eagle Night lineage, and is the son of don Miguel Ruiz, author of New York Times bestseller The Four Agreements. He is the author of the books Living a Life of Awareness: Daily Meditations on the Toltec Path and The Five Levels of Attachment: Toltec Wisdom for a Modern World. Along with his family, he teaches workshops and offers transformational journeys around the world. He also hosts a successful weekly internet radio show, “The Way of the Desert”. We have all unwittingly made agreements about how we choose to live our lives and what we believe our personal truths are. But what we may not realize is that each one of these agreements represents an attachment, a limiting filter on who we think we are, and what the future could hold. We call these attachments “knowledge” without ever questioning if that knowledge is necessarily true for us. During this interview, don Miguel Ruiz Jr will guide all listeners to understanding how we have developed our belief structures and how to go about re-evaluating—or even severing—these harmful attachments. According to Miguel Jr., "it is important to be aware of where we are on the scale of attachment with any particular belief. With awareness we can regain the power to make our own decisions." Miguel Jr teaches us to divide our attachments in 5 levels and how to find the beliefs we have attached to each: The Authentic Self; Preference; Identity; Internalization; and Fanaticism For more information: www.miguelruizjr.com
