"Say the things you need to say." When Theo Boyd first lost her mother to a horrific farm accident, she felt isolated. People heard her story, and immediately offered their own story to relate instead of sitting quietly at her side. In her book, My Grief is Not Like Yours, Theo recounts her unique grief journey by embracing the intensity and allowing herself to express the deeply personal and moving experience of loss, grief, and the lessons she's learned along the way. Today I speak with Callie about the loss of her first son Coley and how she created a legacy by creating an exhibition at Present Lincoln's Cottage in Washington, DC. Listen to Callie describing how she learned to intentionally grieve. One thing to definitely look out for in this episode is how she experiences grief loving her back. Callie says:‘One thing I wish I had known was that it is still possible to have a relationship with your loved one who has died. It's certainly not a relationship that you anticipate. It's not the relationship that you even necessarily wanted or had dreamed of or could have imagined. It is beautiful all at the same time.'About this week's guest Callie Hawkins is a grief activist and bereaved mother whose son, Coley, died of unexplained stillbirth in February 2018 -- one day after his due date. In her professional role as Director of Programming at President Lincoln's Cottage -- a historic site and museum in Washington, DC where President Abraham Lincoln and his family moved after the death of their son, Willie -- Hawkins curated Reflections on Grief and Child Loss, an exhibit that connects the Lincoln family's experience with the deaths of their children with modern families who have lost children across age and experience. Callie, her husband Jason and their living son, Fletcher, live with a deep and abiding love for Coley in the greater Washington, DC area. I know a lot of you are either curious about launching, or struggle with it, and hey — I get it. That's why I thought today, instead of the usual teaching episode, I'd just jam a little with you about what went on behind the scenes during my launch.

What is Your Crutch Word - How Did You Get Rid of It? Crutch words are we words we use when our brain can't come up with something to say. They are used to fill up silence that some feel is awkward. We all have them, and they are only an issue when they are used so much that it becomes distracting/annoying. Please realize that never having a crutch word may be impossible. Often we don't even hear them. So we have to start with identifying that we have a crutch word. When I asked you about your crutch words, here are the ones you are trying to avoid: Craig from Ingles Podcast is "So" and has lots of examples of what to avoid. Brad from The Cinema Guys podcast is "Like" as well as "So Anway..." Brenda from the My Tech Toolbelt Podcast "Is a Big Fan of..." as well as "Right" Darwin Dave from the Dealing with My Grief podcast "So" Tim From the He Said She Said Movie Reviews Podcast Arnie at the Football History Dude Podcast says "Dude..." Nina from Farm Food Health has lots of ums... Mark from the Resourceful Designer and Podcast Branding had a listener let him know he was saying Basically a ton. Mel From Beer with an Engineer has lots of ums, and so.... but turned it into a drinking game. Mike Dell from Podcast Help Desk and Podcast Help Desk News crutch words is "Anyway...." and he's just been pausing instead. Stephanie from the Expat Rewind has "soooo many..." Lee from This is Rammy finds himself saying "Obviously" Win from Ask Win finds herself saying "Like" Kim Krajci from Toastmasters 101 has some tips on how to avoid crutch words. SPONSOR: Alitu Web Based Podcast Maker It's a web app, where people can log in on their web browser and then use it to edit and produce their podcast episodes. Mobile app coming soon too. Podcasters record their show as normal, then upload their recordings to Alitu. Alitu then processes, levels, converts them all, pieces the clips together, adds your theme music automatically, and publishes the episode, direct to your podcast host. If you need to edit out any mistakes, then you can use Alitu's custom podcast editing tool to do just that, before creating your finished episode. The idea behind Alitu is to make Podcasting and quick and simple as possible, removing a bunch of the tech barriers and to let you concentrate on the bit you do best – talking about something you love! It can take an interview where each person records their side of the conversation, and it will combine them together (how cool is that?) Check it out at www.alitu.com check out this video How To Get Rid of Crutch Words Identify them Monitor your use of them Practice NOT Using them. This may include getting use to silence (that you can edit out) Try to figure out what is going on when you use it. Try to determine why you chose to use that word at that time. Next Month's Question: Are you paying for any part of your podcast process? If so how much, and on what? (not so much who you are using). Today's episode features author, speaker, and loss mama Adriel Booker. Adriel shares her story of multiple miscarriages, encourages loss mothers that it is ok to grieve on a wide spectrum of emotions, and advocates to the world for how to tenderly care for bereaved mothers. She also challenges us to allow the Lord to remake our pain into something beautiful. Purchase Grace Like Scarlett Connect with Adriel: website // instagram // twitter // facebook // Our Scarlett Stories Heart Lesson: Enter into God's rest and presence, and quiet my mind and heart enough to hear His voice. What Adriel wants the world to be aware of regarding pregnancy and infant loss: Miscarriage is not only a women's issue. It is a human issue and a family issue. We need to share our stories. We Mention: Journal Prompts for writing your baby's story Centering Prayer App Scriptures Mentioned: 2 Corinthians 12:10 Romans 8:28 Takeaway Truths: Pregnancy loss can be such an intangible form of grief, especially for people who aren't experiencing it themselves. The human heart itself will grieve differently from instance to instance and from circumstance to circumstance. Love is never safe, it is always risky, and that's hard for our mama hearts. When you lose a baby you aren't just losing that little one, but you're losing the life you had begun to imagine. After a mother loses a third baby, what else is there to say? There is just no one right way to grieve. We're all going to respond differently, even as we find the common threads in the midst of it. God is not intimidated by our big questions. He is not put off by our humanity. It is our heart posture makes all the difference. Our heart posture should say, "I need you to meet me here and help me understand." I think the big questions keep us tethered to God because we can't find the answer to those questions without some level of withness with Jesus. Especially as believers we should absolutely be able to rejoice with people then they're celebrating, but we should also walk alongside them when they're suffering. What would you do for a new mom, and what would you do for someone grieving a death? It's that complicated and that simple. Your grief might undo you, but it can also remake you if you are willing to let Christ work with you to make something beautiful happen. What does it mean to pull heaven to earth right now? When we tell our stories it gives others a sense of permission to share theirs too. Seven years of non-stop losses drove Annah Elizabeth to ask, "What makes some people resilient and others crumble under the weight of grief?" That questioning led her to uncover her system of recovering from grief, The Five Facets of Healing. Today we're talking about how we spend the rest of our lives finding resolution for grief, how the second and third year of loss tend to be the hardest to cope with, and how not believing you're healing is a weird part of the healing process. I wanted to clarify while Leo Laporte at one point had said "podcasting is dead" and then later took it back, Michael Stelzner never said podcasting is dead. He simply said his statistics show that his socials media crowd that attends his audience is less interested in the subject of podcasting. Michael still uses podcasting to promote Social Media Marketing world. If you can't afford the trip, some of the top experts are speaking at this event, and you can purchase a virtual ticket I just got done binging on Michael's YouTube series "The Journey" as the second season has just started (so I have to binge the first episode) and this once again proves that "behind the scenes" information is often "not boring." Check it out at journey.show Sue Jennett Your chat about choosing words that evoke emotion was interesting for me, as I like to choose my words carefully for both my podcasts and my blog. I hadn’t before thought about trying to evoke any emotion, but more to inform in an easy-to-listen-to manner. As often happens when I hear your podcasts, I’m at that time working on something to which I can apply your advice. I was, last night, ready to record my speaking portions and edit a podcast about the sacrament of communion for those on a ggluten-freediet. Earlier in the evening ,I chaired a meeting of our local celiac support group, and out of the blue, someone stopped me before I left to ask if I knew any solutions for this exact problem. She didn’t know I had researched it, and spoken to a guest about it. I felt good that I could impart some useful information to her, but what was more impactful on me was her emotional investment in the issue. I left the meeting and came home to “infuse” my podcast with small tugs on the emotional fabric of my listeners. I also used the same strategy to write my social media for today. Small changes, small words, strategically placed to evoke emotion, when the subject is suitable is something I now have in my arsenal of podcasting tools. Thanks Dave – BTW my social posts are getting more comments and interaction than I have ever had on any particular podcast – and guess what – they are mostly emotionally driven! PS – I started a second podcast over the summer on gluten free weight loss/management so you’ll soon see my comments on your Logical Weight Loss Podcast, as I’ve binged on it for a few months now. acanadianceliacblog.com Ready to Start a Podcast? I have realized over the years that I have been judging how I thought people should react in certain situations based on my own personal grief experience. Once I realized I was so wrong, it allowed me to see people and the circumstances in a totally different light. Suzan Lori-Parks is an American playwright, novelist and screenwriter. I don't understand why we don't talk about our grief more. In full transparency, I don't actively discuss it outside of this podcast... and I don't even mention the fact that I have a podcast about grief to many folks. Well this has changed for me. I have openly discussed my grief journey and the circumstances of my father's passing with a complete stranger, and it was a wonderful experience. Grief is a suject that we can't keep bottled up, we must discuss it like anything else we bring up in conversation. Do you agree? My writing comes not from the happy moments, but from struggle and grief. - Isabel Allende This podcast is the direct result of losing my father at an early age. It has served as a form of therapy for me and each week I feel better as I release a lot of emotions that I've kept bottled up for so long. One of the things that I have realized is that in order for me to truly appreciate where I am now in my grief recovery process, I must look back at where I started. So it finally happened... I conducted my FIRST EVER interview. I had the opportunity to spend some times chatting with Joshua Black of the Grief Dreams podcast. Joshua is also working on his PhD in Psychology at Brock University in Ontario, Canada. The main reason behind talking to Joshua was to get the sotry behind his grief and how he dealt with it and how others may has supported him through his grief recovery process. We did finally discuss his research as it relates to dreams that some people may have about their deceased loved ones/pets. A lot has happened this week! I have been interviewed by the team of Grief Dreams Podcast (https://griefdreamspodcast.podbean.com/e/episode-18-grief-dreams-podcast/). I had a great time discussing my grief recovery process with Joshua Black and Shawn Ram. After delaying my announcement about new things coming to the podcast, I decided to tell the world that I'm interviewing people on this show... next week I'll share my interview / conversation with Joshua Black. We'll be talking about this grief journey, and how dreams inspired his research about grief related dreams. You don't want to miss it. This week, I reflect on how I might con keep people alive (through memories) even though the physical person I used to me able to see, touch and interact with are no longer here... memories are very powerful things! If you have been inspired to go great things because of or in spite of your grief (i.e. become a bereavement councilor, created a non-profit organization, written a book, etc.) I want to talk to you about your grief recovery process. There was no episode February 1st... I was sick as I don't know what and didn't even have the energy to push the record button. With that said, I've spent the last week contemplating how my recent bout with the common cold, or flu has caused me to reflect on my grief recovery process. Sometimes I don't think I give myself enough time to recover and I suffer longer than necessary. The life my grandfather lived is vastly different than mine. He was born and raised in a Jim Crow segregated United States. I have vee afforded more opportunities than he has had give the passage of laws the were spearheaded by the spearheaded by Civil Rights movement. The election/inauguration of Donald Trump as President in th U.S. caused some to belief that he and more importantly his supporters want to not only role back recent legislation passed during the Obama administration, but also go much further. His supporters believe he will restore America to its post World War II greatness as an economic power and a strong economy economy. The statement "Make America Great Again" has stirred up much controversy, but what is it's true meaning. I believeit depends on your perceptions of a few thing... WOW... It's been a year since I launched the podcast. I didn't know what I would talk about from week to week. I only knew that I had a lot of emotions that were bottled up inside and that I needed a release, and podcasting was my platform of choice. I am grateful to everyone who has listened to any episode of this show and even more so to those that have listened to every episode. For me the thing that I have learned is that grief imitates life... or is that the other way around. After much deliberation, I've created a Facebook group - Click here to join. I want the group to be a place where we can openly share what;s on our minds and how we feel/cope with our loss and the emotions surrounding them. Speaking of social media, this week I discuss how I found out about my aunt's passing. Normally, I would receive a phone call, typically from my mother. That didn't happen this time! I found out from a post on Facebook, about an hour after her passing.
