Episode Summary: The inner critic can be a constant and discouraging presence, stealing our joy and hindering us from walking in the confidence God intends for us. It often disguises itself as self-improvement or humility, but in reality, it holds us back from embracing our identity in Christ. In today’s episode, we’ll uncover the sources of this voice, explore how Scripture equips us to combat it, and learn practical, biblically-based strategies to replace self-condemnation with God’s truth. Quotables from the episode: The inner critic is that internal voice that condemns, shames, or reminds us of our shortcomings. It whispers lies like, “You’re not good enough,” “You’ll never succeed,” or “Who do you think you are?” Often, this voice feels louder in moments of vulnerability, failure, or self-doubt. Scripture reminds us that Satan is the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10). His goal is to steal, kill, and destroy our confidence and joy (John 10:10). He plants seeds of doubt and discouragement, hoping we’ll lose sight of God’s truth about our identity. The enemy’s accusations often feel like they’re coming from within, making it harder to recognize their origin. Our sinful nature and brokenness often give rise to self-condemnation. Past experiences, such as critical words from others, failures, or unmet expectations, can leave scars that fuel the inner critic. We may strive for perfection, believing the lie that we’re only worthy if we meet certain standards. This striving often leads to exhaustion and deeper feelings of inadequacy. The world bombards us with messages that we must perform, achieve, or conform to be loved or valuable. Social media, advertisements, and cultural expectations paint a picture of perfection that is impossible to attain. When we fall short, the inner critic seizes the opportunity to amplify our insecurities and remind us of our perceived failures. For some, the inner critic’s voice mimics the critical or harsh words spoken by authority figures in their lives, such as parents, teachers, or peers. Over time, these external voices become internalized, shaping how we see ourselves and respond to challenges. Even well-meaning criticism can leave an imprint if it’s not tempered with grace and encouragement. The inner critic is not God’s voice. In fact, His voice always aligns with truth, hope, and encouragement. It’s important to identify and challenge thoughts that contradict God’s truth. Taking every thought captive means actively rejecting lies and replacing them with God’s promises. God’s voice always aligns with His character—He speaks love, encouragement, and restoration. While the inner critic seeks to tear us down, God’s Word builds us up and reminds us of our identity in Christ. By meditating on Scripture, we can discern the difference between the voice of the inner critic and the voice of our loving Father. His truth gives us the strength to silence the lies and walk confidently in His grace. God’s voice brings peace, conviction (not condemnation), and hope. He calls us to see ourselves as He does—fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Become aware of when the inner critic is speaking. Pause and ask, “Is this thought true, or is it a lie?” If it doesn’t align with Scripture, it’s not from God. Journaling your thoughts can help you identify patterns of self-criticism and pinpoint recurring lies that need to be addressed. Counter every negative thought with God’s Word. For example, if the thought says, “I’m a failure,” remind yourself of Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Create a list of Bible verses that speak to your identity in Christ, and keep them handy for moments of doubt. A grateful heart leaves little room for self-criticism. Start each day by thanking God for His blessings and affirming the ways He’s working in your life. When you focus on God’s goodness, it shifts your perspective and quiets the critical voice. Surround yourself with people who speak life and encouragement. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Healthy, godly relationships provide support, accountability, and reminders of your worth in Christ. Be intentional about building connections with those who uplift you. Ask God to help you distinguish His voice from the lies of the enemy. James 1:5 assures us that He gives wisdom generously to those who ask. Pray for clarity and ask the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts and words. Instead of agreeing with the critic, declare the truth of who you are in Christ. Say things like, “I am chosen,” “I am loved,” and “I am forgiven.” Speaking these affirmations aloud helps to reinforce them in your mind and heart. Whether it’s critical people, social media, or unhelpful comparisons, protect your mind by setting healthy boundaries. Consider a social media detox or limiting time spent with individuals who are overly critical or draining. Silencing your inner critic is not a one-time fix; it’s a daily practice of renewing your mind and grounding yourself in God’s truth. Remember, the voice of the inner critic is a liar. God’s voice is the only one that matters, and His voice speaks love, grace, and purpose over you. Scripture References: Romans 8:1, which declares, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Ephesians 2:10 reminds us, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” James 3:9-10 “With the tongue, we praise our Lord and Father, and with it, we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness... My brothers and sisters, this should not be.” Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” 2 Corinthians 10:5 “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Psalm 139:14 “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Recommended Resources: Sacred Scars: Resting in God’s Promise That Your Past Is Not Wasted by Dr. Michelle Bengtson The Hem of His Garment: Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner AWSA 2024 Golden Scroll Christian Living Book of the Year and the 2024 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in the Christian Living and Non-Fiction categories YouVersion 5-Day Devotional Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises from God to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, AWSA Member of the Year, winner of the AWSA 2023 Inspirational Gift Book of the Year Award, the 2024 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in the Devotional category, the 2023 Christian Literary Awards Reader’s Choice Award in four categories, and the Christian Literary Awards Henri Award for Devotionals YouVersion Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day version 1 YouVersion Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day version 2 Revive & Thrive Women’s Online Conference Revive & Thrive Summit 2 Trusting God through Cancer Summit 1 Trusting God through Cancer Summit 2 Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the AWSA 2020 Best Christian Living Book First Place, the first place winner for the Best Christian Living Book, the 2020 Carolina Christian Writer’s Conference Contest winner for nonfiction, and winner of the 2021 Christian Literary Award’s Reader’s Choice Award in all four categories for which it was nominated (Non-Fiction Victorious Living, Christian Living Day By Day, Inspirational Breaking Free and Testimonial Justified by Grace categories.) This episode is for a very specific type of person. Those of you who are hard on yourself, and if you're being honest, it's to an unhealthy degree. The perfectionist who struggles to recognize their own accomplishments, who tears themselves apart over minor slip-ups, and maybe even finds it hard to fully celebrate the wins of others. Not because of jealousy, but because the voice in your head has been trained to fixate on what's missing instead of what's been earned. Maybe you're not wired this way all the time, but after a big achievement, you felt... nothing. Maybe even a little depressed that it didn't feel like more. We know many of you in our audience fall into one of these camps—and this episode is for you. Here's a little premeditated tough love: at some point, it has to be good enough. So how do we move past this all-or-nothing mentality we'll never win? How can we celebrate our accomplishments without dulling our edge? In this episode, Brett breaks down: The 70% Rule—it's immeasurable value and how it can be applied in both creative work and business How to celebrate milestones while preserving the lessons from when you fell flat on your face Who drains your joy, how to cut them out, and the hard truth: you might be doing it to others too Ways to be your own hype man without softening your edge Practical tools for when you hate your own work—and how to get to the root of why that happens During the episode, Brett opened up about the various challenges he's faced while writing his new book. We've all got an inner critic who, when listened to, can hinder, if not shatter, our confidence, increase our shame, and challenge our ability to accurately hear the voice of God. In this episode, author and speaker Will "Joy" Acuff shares some practical ways we can decrease our negative self-talk, increase our self-compassion, and learn to recognize when our loving Father is calling us out of shame and into a deeper experience of His grace. What might God want to speak over you instead? How might your imagination be part of your spiritual renewal? What would it look like to get curious instead of critical? CAUTION ADVISED: this podcast contains mild swear words and themes of an adult nature. This week, I have decided to re-release a conversation that originally came out over three years ago, all the way back in March 2021. Since then, this podcast has attracted many new listeners who perhaps will not have heard this particular conversation. And to me, this is an episode that speaks to one of the most important topics when it comes to improving our health and happiness - compassion. But I'm not talking about compassion for others, I'm talking about compassion for ourselves, and how this is a crucial ingredient that is often overlooked when it comes to living a happier and healthier life. Even if you did hear the original episode, I still think it is worth re-listening as this is a topic that we could all do with a reminder on from time to time. Dr Kristin Neff is a professor at the University of Texas in the department of psychology. She's co-founder of the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion and the author of several best-selling books on the topic. In our conversation, Kristin explains what self-compassion is and why it matters. She explains the difference between self-compassion and self-esteem. Self-compassion is not about making excuses for yourself nor is it about self-pity, instead, it is very much an active, mindful state. Now I know that the very notion of self-love can make a lot of people feel very uncomfortable. Kristin explains why this might be and shares many different ways we can give ourselves compassion. She recommends that people experiment and find a method that feels easy and pleasant for them. We also talk about the ever-present problem of our brain's ‘inner critic' and how our parents influence the way we talk to ourselves. She also explains why self-compassion is most definitely not selfish, in fact, people who have it are kinder, more loving and less controlling of others. Kristin also makes a key distinction between acts of self-care – such as taking a bath, having a massage – and self-compassion. She explains that self-compassion is actually a state of mind. It's not something you have to do, it doesn't take time or resources. It's simply the opposite of being self-critical. It's a way of thinking that has your own best interests at heart. But, this way of thinking doesn't come naturally to us. As humans, we are hard-wired for self-criticism - it's an evolutionary mechanism that makes us feel safe. But when navigating life, who do you want in your head: an enemy who belittles you or a friend who supports you? At the end of our conversation, Kristin takes us through a beautiful practical exercise in finding self-compassion that I think you will really enjoy. This is such an important topic that doesn't get spoken about enough in the conversation around health – I hope you enjoy listening.Find out more about my NEW Journal here https://drchatterjee.com/journalThanks to our sponsors:https://vivobarefoot.com/livemorehttps://drinkag1.com/livemoreShow notes https://drchatterjee.com/442DISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. For many years, I tried to get fit and healthy but would always find myself back at square one. I tried everything – I calorie counted, I dieted, I weighed my food, I weighed myself, I joined slimming clubs, I joined the gym – it didn't matter. No matter what I did, I always managed to go back to square one. One day, I saw an ad in a newspaper, and I thought, 'I know this is going to be the answer to my problems.' It is to train as a fitness and nutrition coach. So, I did the course, I got healthy, and I started to feel really good. I started to feel great in my clothes, my relationships improved, and the frustrated feelings I had inside of myself left. The course wasn't even over three weeks, and all my old habits started to creep back in. By chance, I bumped into one of my former coaches, and we went for coffee. I told him how desperate I felt, that I was beginning to go right back to square one. He said something to me that I'll never forget. He said, 'Jessica, I've never met somebody that's so hard on themselves. Think of it like the foundations of a house – the house will always crumble if you don't have the foundations in place. Your lack of self-love is stopping you from getting where you want to be.' And so, I went on my journey of transformation. This is a transformation I want to share with you in today's episode. Freelancer Mindset Series #2 Let's talk about that pesky inner critic we all know too well. You know, that little voice that loves to rain on our parade and sprinkle doubt all over our dreams? We can get trapped in a cycle of negative self-talk, constantly questioning our abilities and worth. MaryAnn is a Certified Gallup Strengths Coach with a unique passion for helping individuals overcome self-doubt and negative self-talk. One of my favorite topics is learning more about mindset, thinking, and how our brains work. As much as the world's experts already understand, we are probably just beginning to scratch the surface of the power and potential of our thinking. Today's conversation asks and answers the question, “Is your mind lying to you?” Let's learn more together in today's show!Dr. Don Booz is the founder of Booz and Associates, Inc., an executive and organizational development firm. While he is educated as a marriage and family therapist, he is also an executive coach, a master coach in conversational intelligence, and a master practitioner in NLP (neuro-linguistic programming). He is best known as a conversational anthropologist. Dr. Booz is the author of two books, Your Brain is Lying: How to Silence Your Inner Critic and The Emotional Intelligence Primer for Today's Leaders: How to be the Difference that Makes the Difference. Dr. Booz shares specific strategies that you can apply today to get out of your own way in moving forward. What Artists Can learn from the Venice Biennale Curator This is the world's longest running, large scale survey of contemporary art. It is looked to locally and internationally to discover the next new great artist. The curator is Cecilia Alemani, and I went to hear her share her insights about the exhibition. She went into detail about how she made the multitude of decisions involved in this exhibit. Hear how she uses a 3D layout and how she chose the name for the exhibition in addition to how she selected the art itself. Her strategies are something you can use as well. Classic Artist Mistakes On the upper west side in NYC, there's a “flea market” every Sunday. I have checked it out a few times and I wanted to coach some of the artists so that they could sell more art and make more money. Collect addresses to follow up – this is too not be doing it. Offer to keep in touch. I had to ask an artist multiple times how I could connect with him in the future. Make it easy! Download The Artists Profit Plan Where Can You See Bansky in New York City I recently saw graffiti art here in NYC by the street artist Bansky. He's from Great Britain and in addition to his art, he is also an activist. Banksy is a pseudonymous England-based Street artist, political activist and film director whose real name and identity remain unconfirmed and the subject of speculation. He combines existing items into his art. If you are in NY, you can see his art on the south wall on the Designer Show Warehouse at 79th street and Broadway. The owner of the building has taken steps to preserve the art, so hopefully it will be there for many more years. The Art World remembers Edmonia Lewis I love to find the most interesting stamps when I go to the post office. Nothing wrong with the flag, but why not find something more interesting? In February during black history month, I bought some stamps featuring Edmonia Lewis. Check out her story. She was the first sculptor of African American and Native American (Mississauga) descent to achieve international recognition. Her father was Black, and her mother was Chippewa (Ojibwa) Indian. She has a fascinating life story and despite a number of setbacks she never stopped creating art. You'll be inspired by her story and her tenacity. More on this topic: The Rise of the Black Portrait Artist Forget Perfectionism in Your Art Let's talk about the deliberate mistake. In many handmade Persian rugs and carpets, you will discover the deliberate mistake. Followers of Islam believe only Allah makes things perfectly, and therefore to weave a perfect rug or carpet would be an offence to God. If you are plagued with perfectionism, or find yourself being hyper critical of your work, I have a resource to help. Don't allow your inner critic stop you from creating or keep you from promoting your artwork. Download 9 Mantras to Silence Your Inner Critic
