In this month's episode we visit Dumfries and Galloway, the latest stop in our trip around the regions. We speak with Dr Neil Kelly, a familiar voice on the SNUG podcast, and discuss life in the South of Scotland and how things are going with preparations for GP system change, how the local project team and facilitators have become  confident in managing the change, and the importance of supporting staff during the transition.  Neil has reduced his GP leadership workload and developed a new interest in farming, but still has plenty of reflections on the evolving nature of general practice, the increase in telephone consultations, the occasional trivia of eConsult requests and why video consultations haven't taken off. We discussed some of the difficulties with integrating systems like digital dictation, ECGs, and spirometry into the new IT environment, due to budget limitations. He's impressed by Heidi Health, which shows promise in saving time through note-taking and digital dictation, and also discusses the potential benefits of Digital Dermatology, with his practice being one of the early adopters. Neil remains optimistic about the future of general practice in Scotland, contrasting it with the more corporate approach in England. He points out the positive impact of additional support staff like pharmacists, mental health nurses, and the importance of having GPs handle complex tasks. Despite fears of GPs being replaced by other practitioners, Neil believes GPs remain highly efficient and cost-effective. Listen to the end for some wine and book recommendations! “CDMO environments can often be very tough and chaotic, requiring leaders who can navigate uncertainty" says Neil Kelly, CEO and founder of Vector, a company specializing in talent solutions for the biopharma industry.  "To succeed in this sector, you need to be able to thrive in 'grey' areas. Not all leaders can handle this kind of environment." At CDMO Live 2024, a poll of attendees indicated that leadership skills was the most significant talent-related issue that was holding their company back from achieving growth. “Strong leadership is critical in any organization, but it's especially vital in the fast-paced and complex world of CDMOs." says Neil, speaking on the PharmaSource podcast. “One of the challenges we face is trying to recruit talent in a market that is short on the skills we require.  There's a major shortage of talent," Neil Kelly, founder of Vector Partners, has two decades experience in talent acquisition within life sciences, including high-growth period at Thermo Fisher and Patheon. In the latest episode of the PharmaSource podcast Neil explains some key strategies to help bridge the talent gap in life sciences. 1. Reassess on-site vs remote talent The great lesson from the pandemic was been the successful continuation of business through remote working. “The supply chain is becoming more and more global - the ability to source product from anywhere in the world is just a reality now. As you think around talent and your workforce globally, then you then start realising that  it's not so much about where the product is that's important but it's where you can source that talent, because the certain talent around the world that is really short." However, this has presented a real challenge for HR functions and talent functions to understand which roles can go remote versus those that simply can't - such as  manufacturing or supply chain roles that physically handle products. “Don't think about physical distance as a limitation to trade or to doing business together." says Neill. "Start to look at your landscape globally for where do you source talent, versus where do you need to produce the product.” 2. Go deeper into a candidates' strengths and weaknesses If it's challenging to find someone who is an exact fit, go look deeper into candidate's strengths, says Neil. “There are very few dedicated Academic courses for sourcing, procurement and supply chain, and those that are are very dated in terms of the content that's delivered to students.  So, we have to look elsewhere." “If particular talent doesn't exist in the market we have bypass what the label of the degree says on their resume and really start to look at who they are as an individual and their behaviours.” 3. Invest in skills development “Skills development will continue to be paramount for organisations moving forward, certainly for the next two to three years minimum. It's not only a great retention tool, but the second is that it also allows you to create more skills within your existing resources. “ "If you take an average procurement function or supply chain function, very often, they will have a defined set of skills and a defined boundaries in terms of where they operate.  Training can help you to get "more all-rounders in your business", says Neil, which will increase your productivity. Training "is a good thing for the employee, and a good thing for the business. " 4. Recruit from outside of the industry "You can't train the science" says Neil, but enabling functions such as Procurement and Supply Chain - like HR and Finance - have transferable skills which you can look for outside of the pharma industry.  "In supply chain, we look for agility, we look for speed, we look for sharpness around commerciality that generally has not come from within the pharma industry. “ "We source that talent from those industries that are really lean - telecoms, third-party logistics. These are industries that really sharpen their pencil around some of these skills. We go into these industries and pluck out the very best." 5. Use compensation to your advantage Take the opportunity to use pay and benefits as way to attract talent from other industries. "Compensation is generally lower within these industries (such as telecoms and third-party logistics) so you're able to attract the talent, so you've got a commercial or a compensation advantage of attracting someone.” Listen to the full podcast for the full interview.

And then there was one…. EMIS Health shared the disappointing news this week that they are unable to meet the timelines of the Scottish Framework for GP IT Re-provisioning, and as a result, have made the decision to withdraw. This will leave Vision as the only accredited GP system for Scotland. A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document regarding EMIS' exit from the Framework has been created and issued to health boards. The NSS GP IT website (NHS net only) will also be updated to reflect the changes announced. If you have a specific question about EMIS, please contact your local Facilitator Lead or eHealth team, or contact the programme team at nss.gpitre-provisioning-scotland@nhs.scot. In this edition of the SNUG podcast, Drs Andrew McElhinney and Neil Kelly discuss the implications of the news for Scottish GP practices, and manage to come to a reasonably positive conclusion, while accepting that it will take a massive amount of work by boards and practices to manage a system migration for more than half of Scottish GP IT Users over the next couple of years. In an interview with SNUG co-chairman Dr Neil Kelly, Louise McTaggart describes her experiences working with general practices in the West of Scotland over a number of years.  Louise started off as a practice manager in Glasgow in the 1990s and after working for a time as a trainer and IT facilitator for practices in Glasgow, she is now the National GP IT Re-deployment manager for the National Services Scotland GP IT Re-Provisioning team. She has a long involvement with the Scottish National Users Group and has garnered much knowledge about how best to help share ideas and tips to facilitate a variety of practices as they develop and use technology in a more effective way. As the challenge of helping practices move on to the next generation of IT systems grows closer, Louise will be involved with working with suppliers to carry out testing and assurance of the new systems before they are deployed to health boards.Visit the SNUG website: https://www.snughealth.org.ukor our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/scottishnationalusersgroup

The re-procurement, renewal and modernisation of existing GP clinical systems in Scotland to the next generation of centrally hosted systems is called GP IT re-provisioning. The three suppliers who are on the Framework Contract Agreement are Vision, EMIS and Microtest, and they are currently developing their systems so they can be tested and validated against the Scottish specification and requirements. What are the implications for Scottish GP practices? Dr Neil Kelly, co-chair of the Scottish National Users’ group (SNUG) speaks to Robert Hutton, who works for National Services Scotland as implementation manager for the GP IT re-provisioning project about current progress. Robert describes what practices will have to think about before they form into cohorts, which will be required before a new system can be chosen within a health board by mini-competition. Neil also speaks to Brian Ponton, a practice manager in North Surgery, Annan, Dumfries and Galloway, about what he understands about, and is expecting from the GP IT re-provisioning process.SNUG members can get more information and see videos from our members' day about the latest re-provisioning progress at the SNUG website https://www.snughealth.org.ukYou can also find more information at the following links (please note - only available via NHS Net):https://www.gpit.scot.nhs.uk/faqs/https://www.gpit.scot.nhs.uk/news-events/SNUG is keen to hear your comments and we will try and answer any queries about GP IT re-provisioning or any other question you think SNUG can help with. You can leave comments or ask questions:on Twitter: https://twitter.com/snusersgroup or email alexandra.defranco@nhs.net

(2:06) In This Episode: Why Should You Make Cash Flow a Priority? Few players in the remodeling space are strangers to the cash crunch. It’s practically built into the business: cash flow goes up and down due to seasonality, remodeling trends and changes in the greater economy, among other factors. But one thing that separates successful businesses from those that lose track of their goals is their commitment to making cash flow a priority. In this episode of Remodeling Mastery, Mark delves into the hows and whys of cash flow: why it matters so much, how much cash you should have on hand, ways to improve your cash flow, and more. (14:57) Thought Leader Interview with Tom Kelly, President and CEO of the Neil Kelly Corporation Mark picks Tom’s brain on some of the things that made Neil Kelly the nationally recognized, multi-award-winning company it is today—from company culture to the many “potholes” they’ve run into in their 70+ years in business. We also hear about what gets Tom out of bed in the morning, what it takes to be a certified B Corp, what he’s most looking forward to in the next few years, and his thoughts on luck versus diligence. “Businesses are one of the most important vehicles for good social change.” —Tom Kelly

Thu grew up in a multi-cultural musical melting pot of Vietnamese folk music, R&B, and Broadway. In college, Thu received classical voice training under the private tutelage of Mr. Merrill Shea, on faculty at the Boston Conservatory of Music.  She continued her musical endeavors in various A Capella groups, recorded for famed Vietnamese composer Bao Quoc Hoang, and performed professionally around San Diego in an Indie Soul Band called Curbside Vinyl.    Thu's journey through the vast world of music landed her at the doorstep of Jazz, accompanied by her innate attraction towards sass, big sultry vocals, and musical nuance.  She has studied Jazz theory and performance with highly regarded performers and instructors, including Jono Kornfeld, Rebeca Mauleon, David Hardiman Jr., Dena DeRose, and Madeline Eastman.    Thu has performed in private events and at various San Francisco and Bay Area venues, including the historic Sir Francis Drake Hotel, Mr. Tipple's Recording Studio, Angelicas, and Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse, and with ensembles led by the Diablo Jazz Company, Grant Levin, Don Alberts, Denny Berthiaume, Walter Bankovitch, Lukas Vesely, Neil Kelly, and Ben Fong-Torres. Her vocal styling is infused with the artistic sensibilities from a unique musical upbringing, and heavily influenced by Sarah Vaughan, Helen Merrill, Nancy Wilson, Amy Winehouse, and Ella Fitzgerald.http://www.thuhomusic.com/
