Mpox – An evolving One Health problem

Send us a textSmallpox may be gone but it's got a cousin called mpox, and that virus is now spreading fast across parts of Africa. As of October 2024, this mpox outbreak had infected more than 40,000 people, mostly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 1,000 people have died from the infection. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in August 2024.Officials are distributing smallpox vaccines to try to control it. The viruses are closely enough related so researchers believe that modern smallpox vaccines can protect people safely against mpox. But the rollout is slow.  It's not clear why the virus has started spreading in households, but it's infecting and killing more and more children. To make matters worse, people are desperate for medicines to prevent infection and help treat symptoms, which include fevers and a rash. They're seeking antibiotics, which cannot treat a virus. This inappropriate use of antibiotics can drive drug resistance. This is the second time mpox has been declared a public health emergency by the WHO since 2022. A slightly different strain of mpox has been spreading since then through close contact, often sexual and often among men who have sex with men. Mpox is even now showing up in new cities and countries in North America and Europe.Nodar Kipshidze, Senior Research Analyst at the One Health Trust, says the virus spreads easily because people often don't know they have it. It's also not clear where it originally came from, although small rodents and other mammals can spread it. In this episode of One World, One Health, Nodar tells us mpox is causing a lot of confusion, and we need to ensure we learn from previous outbreaks and share resources globally to stop the spread and save lives.

Thanks for joining us! Today we welcome Brad Rosen the COO and Co-Founder of NODAR, a leading provider of next generation of stereo vision technology. Technology developments in agriculture continue to create effective ways for automation and sensing providing farmers with useful information and working to improve operation efficiency. Today Brad and Monte discuss the power of the type of sensing technology NODAR has developed. It's a great conversation so let's jump right in. Brad Rosen is the COO and Co-Founder of NODAR, a leading provider of next generation of stereo vision technology. Brad is a seasoned business executive and entrepreneur. With seven tech startups under his belt, Brad has a proven track record of taking ideas from inception to product market fit, to exit. Prior to NODAR, Brad started, ran, and sold Drync, a venture-backed B2B platform for retailers of beverage alcohol. Before Drync, Brad served as VP Product at Where, a mobile-first LBS company that was sold to eBay. Earlier in his career, Brad held roles at Cognio, a full-stack spectrum analysis system that was sold to Cisco, Ucentric Systems (sold to Motorola), and PureSpeech (sold to Philips). Brad has an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Colorado and an MBA from MIT's Sloan School of Management. Brad lives in Lincoln, MA with his wife and 3 kids. Company Info: NODAR's Founder, Leaf Jiang, spent 8 years getting his BS, MS, and PhD at MIT studying and implementing optoelectronic systems. He then spent 12 years at MIT Lincoln Laboratory building laser ranging systems for the military - putting them on Humvees and robots for various 3D sensing applications. In short, he's been thinking about this 3D perception problem for a very long time! From his extensive work with time-of-flight ranging systems (such as LiDAR), Leaf knew that they would not be a good fit anytime soon for many of the autonomous uses being discussed today, such as autonomy for the billion passenger vehicles out there. Laser-based systems are too expensive, too prone to failure, and have insufficient resolution to accurately detect objects. So Leaf set out to build something better and the answer was NODAR! Website: https://www.nodarsensor.com/ Got questions you want answered? Send them our way and we'll do our best to research and find answers. Know someone you think would be great on the AgEmerge stage or podcast? Send your questions or suggestions to kim@asn.farm we'd love to hear from you.

Here we find that Jesus, the Son of God, rose from supper, laid aside His garments, and girded himself with a towel. His service was based on who He was in the Father. This is God who becomes man,  humbles Himself and  becomes a servant. Jesus says, "I came not to be served, but to serve and to give my life as a ransom."  Jesus tells us that this is the way He wants us to live. But Jesus was able to serve from His identity as the beloved Son. He has won that for each of us. We are called to serve like Jesus, to wash oneanother's feet, but that giving of ourselves comes from knowing who we are in Christ.Come and be moved by His desire for you! There has been a lot of talk recently about vision versus LiDARs and RADARs. I hosted Leaf Jiang, CEO of a company called NODAR to learn more about the advantages and limitations of each technology, and how NODAR's own technology overcomes them. Their name is a nice play on the fact that their product is not RADAR or LiDAR, but in fact, uses vision to achieve resolution and depth perception better than either of them.Instead of relying on machine learning models to interpret the feed from the cameras, NODAR's system, consisting of a pair of cameras, triangulates distance measures to points in the scene by measuring angles to the point from each of the cameras. There's a lot of complicated geometry involved, which, sadly for the nerds amongst you, we will not go into. All that said, NODAR's colour-coded point clouds can be an incredibly powerful source of data for machine learning models that can then do everything from scene inference to path planning, possibly computationally more efficiently. I am sure you will love listening to my chat with Leaf on this episode of the AI in Automotive Podcast.AI in Automotive Podcast

We speak with Nodar Janashia who is the CEO and founder of Zapper which simplifies Yield Farming. So we discuss yield farming in DeFi with Nodar. Ever since Compound Finance launched their governance token COMP "If you don't understand where the yield is coming from in DeFi Yield Farming, it's coming from YOU" Nodar's perspective is that different platforms offer different equations, borrowers pay yield and lenders get yield. In the compound, the borrower pays yield... in Maker, you collateralize in order to get a loan, and you do pay interest. If you collateralize ETH and take out Dai the interest is zero, so you can be incentivized to convert. But to unlock you need to pay back with interest. In uniswap a liquidity provider gains fees from swappers. If you get liquidated you can pay 13% or more in fees. The liquidity provider or market maker gets some of the fees. Now you can combine these pieces to form Zaps in Zapper. What makes Zapper special initially was providing assets to Uniswap as a market maker--you need equal worth assets--two piles. So if you come with just ETH you need to split it into two different piles. This creates user friction, so initially Zapper just made this into a single action. So these kinds of transactions can be made much easier. Synthetix created the most popular uniswap V1 pool with their SNX token. Now there are a ton of them with Balancer and Curve as well. Ultimately we want to give the power to the people to make their own combinations of transactions in DeFi. A DeFi "sandwich" maker or Zapper being a money lego set. Nodar joins me on Base Layer to talk about his exciting project, Zapper which aims to increase the GDP of DeFi by abstracting the complexities of accessing unique opportunities faced by retail investors, fund managers and builders around the world. We had a detailed conversation about how current DeFi works, yield farming and all the nuisances involved to participate. Zapper is a project a lot of people are talking about because it connect a lot of the disparate pieces in DeFi in one location. Remembering Nodar: Georgian luger’s lasting legacy

On the 12th February 2010, the eve of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili suffered a fatal crash whilst on a practice run – just hours before the opening ceremony was due to take place. Terrance Kosikar was the first responder on the scene. While he had been trained to save people’s lives throughout his career, he was never prepared for the emotional trauma of dealing with a fatality. Terrance went into a downward spiral as he suffered from post-traumatic stress syndrome and severe depression, which led to him trying to take his own life on several occasions. But thankfully he found a way out – through the great outdoors. Terrance now runs the Camp My Way project in Canada, which takes people suffering from similar mental health issues on camping adventures in the Canadian mountains. He tells Caroline Barker what he remembers of that tragic day 10 years ago and how the Camp My Way initiative and his other campaigns are helping to continue Nodar’s legacy. SUPER ‘DOG’ BOWL 54 Patrick Mahomes went to Disney World to celebrate the Kansas City Chiefs winning the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years. But one player went barking mad with his celebrations… Derrick Nnadi paid all the adoption fees at a Kansas City dog shelter - allowing families to take the dogs home for free. Derrick tells us what it feels like to be a Super Bowl winner and how his relationship with his own dogs inspired him to help give the Kansas City dogs in need a home for life. MAKING HISTORY IN THE DAKAR Kirsten Landman became the first African woman to complete the Dakar rally on a motorbike this year. After travelling nearly EIGHT THOUSAND kilometres over 12 days, mostly across the unforgiving sand of the Saudi Arabian desert, the South African made history last month as she finished one of the most notoriously dangerous sporting events in the world. Kirsten's achievement is even more impressive considering that a terrible accident at a race in Botswana in 2013 left her in an induced coma for two weeks and fighting for her life. Kirsten was told she would never be able to race again and promised herself she would never return to high speed racing, but sometimes you just can't stop a speed demon. IS FOOTBALL FAN FEVER REAL? Researchers at the University of Oxford have found that the most passionate football fans are more likely to experience potentially dangerous levels of stress whilst watching the game they love. When we get stressed, cortisol levels in our blood rise. Too much of this hormone over time can lead to all kinds of health issues like heart attacks. Dr Martha Newson led the research – which was conducted on Brazil fans at the men’s World Cup in 2014. And they provided plenty of cortisol to analyse, with Brazil’s infamous 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semi-final causing all kinds of stress. And if you really want to test your cortisol levels, listen carefully at the start to hear about football fans having tattoos on their testicles... Bitcoin got us started, and Ethereum has taken the baton and run with it. Now there are talented, brilliant thinkers, dreamers, and entrepreneurs building the infrastructure to make the global financial system less costly and more open.As we continue to build on top of the infrastructure, making digital assets more usable, safer, and easier, we will start to see the less technical users who are not crypto enthusiasts. You will need some easy explanation of the systems and technology you are trusting with your money. We understand…it’s not every day that the entire financial system changes. This is the equivalent of going from radio to television. We’re here to try to take the technical and make it approachable. We want a comfortable transition to this new financial ecosystem. We bring our financial background and ability to understand and explain complex financial topics, and couple that with our enthusiasm for the opportunities afforded us by a more decentralized system. We will produce videos and articles, and research and educate. Our goal is to help you integrate your finances with the new decentralized infrastructure in a way that makes you feel comfortable.
