Ever wonder what it was like growing up as a true child in the Grateful Dead family? Trixie Garcia (Jerry's daughter), Jess Hunter Keilt (daughter of lyricist Robert Hunter), and Merry Prankster/Author Ken Kesey's daughter, Sunshine Kesey share fond stories of the circus atmosphere surrounding their upbringing. In a rare interview with these three ladies together, while guests backstage at the Skull & Roses Festival in Ventura, CA, they also share thoughts on the amazing longevity of the music and culture molded by their parents, and how such continues to impact people's lives. On this Earth Day interview, learn also how Friends of the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in San Francisco has helped to preserve that venue and the surrounding open space in The City's McClaren Park, the heart of Jerry Garcia's childhood neighborhood. Adding to the roster of female Grateful Dead royalty appearing on this episode, meet Grateful Dead audio engineer, Betty Cantor-Jackson, visiting with Tales From The Green Room backstage at Terrapin Sunday Daydream Vol. 3 with Phil & Friends. Betty shares some of her journey and plight as a women in the music industry, the story of her Betty Boards recordings, and her work recording the Grateful Dead's famous Barton Hall concert at Cornell University on 5/8/77. This week, British blues guitarist, singer/songwriter Bex Marshall brings us Irish funk rock band Republic Of Loose and their acclaimed 2004 debut 'This Is The Tomb Of The Juice'. With a surprising range of sounds for an outfit from Dublin - including gospel, rap, smoky blues and dirty funk - leader Mick Pyro and company sound like a cross between OutKast and the Stones, with a bit of Sly Stone thrown in. Although relatively unknown in the states, they attracted some heavy duty fans back home in their relatively short existence including Damien Dempsey, Sinéad O'Connor and Bono. "It must be something in the water..." Songs discussed in this episode: Intro - Republic Of Loose; Lay Down And Die, 5AM, The House Of Mercy, I Can't Look You In The Eye - Bex Marshall; Ride With Us (Live, The Olympia Theatre 2006), Kiodin Man, Hold Up! - Republic Of Loose; Give It Away Now - Red Hot Chili Peppers; Girl I'm Gonna Fuck You Up - Republic Of Loose; Miss You - The Rolling Stones; The House Of Mercy - Bex Marshall; Something In The Water, Tell More Lies, Slow Down - Republic Of Loose; Over The Rainbow - Eva Cassidy; Sweet Cola Of Mercy, Six Sober Sounds, Dial Jesus For Sweetness - Republic Of Loose; Guilty, Dirty Water - Bex Marshall; Black Bread - Republic Of Loose; Preaching To The Choir - Bex Marshall
Recently, I chatted with author Sophia Lambton about her book, "The Callas Imprint: A Centennial Biography". If you are a fan of Callas, which I am, this book offers you a deep dive into her life, born from extensive research, debunking popular theories and offering an authentic portrayal. Twelve years in the making "The Callas Imprint" reaps never-before-seen correspondence and archival documents worldwide—closing in on the self-contradictions of Callas, her attitudes and habits with empathic scrutiny. It swivels readers through the singer's on- and offstage scenes and flux of fears and dreams... the double life of all performers. For many opera lovers, Maria Callas and Tosca's Vissi d'Arte are inseparable. "I lived for art; I lived for love" became La Divina's cri de coeur, her swansong, the perfect expression of her own triumphs and tragedies. This unrivaled recording is from that legendary Zeffirelli production in 1964 and is one of just many jewels in the Maria Callas Live edition.] __________________________________________________________________About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer & actor living in Toronto. Missed some of your favourite bits during the week? Want to catch up on the craic from Dermot and Dave? Well look no further than the Dermot and Dave Best Of podcast, your home for all of the messing with none of the music! Whether you're on a drive, out on a walk, getting stuck into the gaff or garden or looking for a bit of distraction from work, the Dermot and Dave Best of podcast has just some of our favourite moments from the week gone by! It's all about Christmas on Dermot & Dave as we launched our ‘Campervan of Christmas Joy', but it was all nearly ruined by Dave's voice giving up on him! It's not like he needs it or anything…right? But it's no surprise that he lost it after what was an incredible weekend that involved presenting at a sold out Aviva Stadium, and performing live at the Olympia Theatre. Meanwhile, Dermot went full Dave sitting on the couch with a lap blanket and a Coke Zero. Absolute freaky Friday! We heard about the bird who tried to make TodayFM HQ its home, the incredible story of the Irish coffee and learned how people with really long nails type. Oh, and there's the small matter of Cathal's ear piercing…but more on that next week. Plus your faves like Say Stuff that Suits the Music, Dave's Bad Jokes and we try to explain what a caper is.
In this glorious and righteous episode, our heroes both have a bit of a disaster in entirely separate countries. Dear Rob is in Spain where he was due to gig and not everything went to plan entirely, and dear Kyle is in dear Ireland where he was let down by Leicester's finest indie rock & roll band (and possibly a ticket tout too simultaneously).
This week Jack and Sean chat to Faye Shortt the actor and comedian from her car in Limerick. Faye tells the lads all about her time in school and how she fell in love with acting and comedy. She talks about writing in lockdown and how her life plans changed once covid stuck. Faye tells the boys about growing up with a famous Da and about her utter enjoyment in working with him. Find us on Instagram, Facebook and don't forget to hit that subscribe button. When you think of the Olympia Theatre you might think of glitz and glamour. You might think of the gigs you’ve been to. The plays. The shows. What you probably don’t think about is the darker side. You probably don’t think about Bridgit Breslin, the dancer whose tragic death connects with the story of the last woman sentenced to death in Ireland.

Sinead Cusack was born in Ireland into a acting dynasty. Her first ambition, whilst at convent school, was to be a saint. But her behaviour didn't match her early aspiration: as a teenager she was nearly expelled from school for dramatising the Profumo affair for the headmistress's feast day. Her first professional part was at the age of eleven when her father, the actor Cyril Cusack, cast her in an adaptation of Kafka's The Trial at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin. She played a deaf mute - she says perhaps he did it to keep her quiet, because he wasn't keen for her to pursue acting and said she would never be a classical actress. Sinead's first roles were at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, whilst she was still at university. She came to London, where she took over from a pregnant Judi Dench in London Assurance in 1975. She joined the Royal Shakespeare Company which, she says, taught her all she knows. For Our Lady of Sligo (1998), in which Sinead played the lead role of Mai O Hara and showed in Ireland, on Broadway and at the National, she received the 1998 Evening Standard Award for Best Actress and 1998 Critics Drama Award for Best Actress. She was also nominated for Best Actress/Drama Desk Award and for Best Actress for Olivier Award.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Pie Jesu from Faure's Requiem by Gabriel Fauré Book: Collected plays by Anton Chekhov Luxury: A big hat with a lot of muslin
