Key Takeaways: How productivity can be achieved by forming good relationships between managers and employees. How to show up authentically and align with what's important to you, as a leader. Do the work around the values that are important to you, to find alignment and be able to serve your people. How to be conscious about what you're trying to create, as opposed to defaulting your way. Episode timeline: [1:13] Intro [6:50] The three programs and coaching they deliver to organizations aspiring to become more human-centered. [10:04] How to lead with awareness, choice, and the courage to change when messy moments happen. [14:07] How developing better relationships and making people feel good at work, can lead to better work productivity. [17:27] How to consciously align to your intentions and continue growing your people as a manager. [21:56] Claiming value – the process of knowing what's important to you, how you align those values with who you are when you show up, and how you align it with the organization that you work with. [25:52] How they claim value in their business by showing up authentically and aligning to what's important to them. [29:59] They explain how they assess whether they'll bring humanity to an organization or not. [34:50] How to consciously assess what you want and how it will serve you and others. [37:38] Kate and Debbie describe their career paths and how they landed where they are now. [50:31] How to own your impact, by speaking up against toxic leadership that's affecting you. [1:00:19] Learn to treat your people like humans and not like resources. Quotes: “People are really the key to amplifying productivity, and when people work well together, the business wins and so do the relationships between people.”- Kate Roeske-Zummer [8:20] “Messiness can be super exciting if you sit with it, explore it, and if you see the opportunity in it.”- Cathleen Merkel [9:40] “When your impact is aligned to business outcomes and who you want to be, you're more compelling.”- Debbie Cohen [24:16] “Productivity is about people, and if you don't pay attention to those people, then the success of your company is at risk.”- Kate Roeske-Zummer [1:00:20] “Humanity is interdependent; the workplace relies on humanity.”- Debbie Cohen [1:04:28] About Debbie Cohen and Kate Roeske-Zummer: At the time, Debbie was the Chief of People for Mozilla and Kate was co-owner of StepUp Leadership. Kate was in-training to become certified to lead this approach. Debbie was there as a participant to learn the model and assess if the approach had potential within Mozilla. What's funny about their first meeting is when you are your most compelling self, others want to connect with you. It must have worked because they were drawn to each other and have been learning and working together ever since! Their first big collaboration was the leadership program Debbie was working on for Mozilla. She wanted to create something that spoke to the unique culture of Mozilla, which was a rapidly scaling global, open-source movement. Kate, and her then-business partner became Debbie's partners of choice. Their goal was to create a leadership program that was transformational not transactional. Working together, they co-created what became branded as LEAD: Leadership Exploration And Discovery, a totally unique approach to developing leaders. This exploratory leadership model allowed people to uncover who they really are, as well as who they want to be, and bring that full human potential into their leadership. Micha Anderson, the Senior HR Business Partner who supported the very large engineering function, notes “Mozilla's director population really shifted from a victim mindset to people really leaning in and using their voice to make change.” This program became the catalyst for TRIBE, a deconstructed version of LEAD, focused on providing skills and techniques to help all members of the Mozilla community gain insights about themselves and work better together. It ran successfully for over 8 years. Fast forward several years, Kate was now running StepUp Leadership on her own and Debbie had left Mozilla and gone on to do a number of other projects. Debbie and Kate began taking on several projects together, most focused on group dynamics of leadership teams. They began to notice some repeating themes: lack of trust in one another, inability to constructively navigate conflict, self-protective behaviour, and repeated cycles of reactive behaviour. The impact of these behaviour's (and others) was gridlock – a lack of forward momentum for the company. No amount of process and procedure could fix what was broken. What these teams needed, and what Kate and Debbie were able to provide were insights, tools and techniques so people could get into relationship with one another and work better together. It was working. The work they were doing in organizations was working, again. They were also exploring organizational gaps and pain points. They honed their focus on front-line managers, using mountains of qualitative and quantitative evidence to indicate this as the high-leverage layer to effect change and drive engagement within most organizations. Their working assumption: if managers were functioning from their highest potential, a ripple effect could be created with the humans they are responsible for and with those they work interdependently with. A bit LEAD-like, the idea used a cohort model to affect a sea-change in how people were working together to get things done so organizations and their people would thrive. Simultaneously, they had been talking about whether or not this is a movement, a “gorilla sea-change” for HR or, a big shift in the way it contributes to an organization's success. Kate and Debbie reached out to a group of people they lovingly refer to as “The Dream Team” to talk about the impact that they were having. Kate and Debbie had been approaching the dialogue through the perspective of creating a new product, a program for HR, which would be part of the overall mix of programs they offered. And from a quiet place of contemplation on the couch, Mihca (one of our dream teamers) boldly declared: “You cannot lead a movement part time, YOU are the champions of this movement.” In that moment Kate remembers her heart dropping; Deb's hands were beginning to sweat. Their eyes locked on each other and without saying anything, they knew they were being called forward. HR was not their target it was all people in the workplace. We had bigger things to do in the world. It was up to us to help bring more humanity to the workplace so we could change the world of work for everyone because Humanity Works Better together. Episode 40: Emotional Support Animals.Service Animals vs Emotional Support Animals, meet Ronica and Fred, HTN medications at night, jokes about being 40. Today is February 15, 2021.We hope you had a beautiful Valentine’s Day. Today I’d like to share some information that may be not so new anymore, but for some people it may be new. It’s about hypertension chronotherapy. An article published in AAFP News in November 2019 explains that taking hypertension medication at bedtime improves cardiovascular risk. This was a large prospective study that compared taking meds at bedtime vs taking meds in the morning. It was called The Hygia Chronotherapy Trial. It was originally published in October 2019 in the European Heart Journal. The study was conducted in Spain (ole!), and involved almost 20,000 patients with hypertension who were divided into two groups: One group took all their hypertension medications at bedtime, and another group took all their hypertension medications in the morning. In the next 6 years, 1,752 participants experienced cardiovascular-related death, myocardial infarction, coronary revascularization, heart failure or stroke. And the good news is that the bedtime medication group showed an improved blood pressure control and lower risk than the morning medication group. Taking BP medications at bedtime dropped the death rate by 45%. Incidence of myocardial infarction, stroke and heart failure were all significantly reduced. Taking thiazides at bedtime may be challenging, on the bright side, the study also found that moving only one medication to bedtime is still beneficial. Welcome, Valerie Civelli, it’s a pleasure to have you here. Random question, what is the farthest place you have visited? What will be talking about today?Civelli: Emotional Support Animals (ESA). Many people with disabilities use a service animal in order to fully participate in everyday life. Dogs can be trained to perform many important tasks to assist people with disabilities, such as providing stability for a person who has difficulty walking, picking up items for a person who uses a wheelchair, preventing a child with autism from wandering away, or alerting a person who has hearing loss when someone is approaching from behind.Arreaza: So, is it like a service animal? Civelli: Service animals and emotional support animals are not the same, so be sure to note the different. According to the APA, American Psychology Association: Species: Any animal can be an emotional support animal. Under federal law, only dogs and miniature horses can be service animals[2]. Such is the case of Abrea Hensley who has flown from Nebraska to Chicago with her miniature mare, Flirty in August 2019. Arreaza: There was revival on the topic again. A story went viral in February 2020, one year ago, as Ronica Froese flew from Michigan to Ontario (California) with her service animal who is a miniature horse named Freckle Butt Fred, or Fred for short. They traveled together in first class. The picture went viral online, and it created positive and negative comments among travelers and internauts. Miniature horses were approved as service animals in 2011 by the ADA (Americans with Disability Act).Civelli: Purpose: An emotional support animal assists through its presence alone. A service animal is specially trained to perform tasks for someone with a disability. Training: An emotional support animal requires no training; all that's needed is a letter from a mental health professional explaining its therapeutic value. Service animals must undergo individualized training. Arreaza: Animals for sure generate a reaction in humans whenever they enter a room. Tell us about the legal protections. "An animal's eyes have the power to speak a great language." ― Martin Buber. "An animal's eyes have the power to speak a great language." ― Martin BuberCivelli: While the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects service animals, it does not cover emotional support animals. Emotional support animals are covered only under the Air Carrier Access Act and Fair Housing Act. Keep in mind, the criteria of mental or emotional disability is defined in the DSM 5, by the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), the Fair Housing Act, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (section 504), as well as the Air Carrier Access Act (49 U.S.C. 41705 and 14 C.F.R. 382).Arreaza: Where can service animals go?Civelli: A service animal can go anywhere its owner goes. While owners of emotional support animals may get away with bringing them into places where pets aren't allowed, the only places legally required to welcome them are aircraft—where they fly for free in the main cabin—and housing units.Arreaza: Or with the owner, and in the case of Fred, the miniature horse. However, Fred probably had his last flight because the US Department of Transportation now allows only service dogs to fly with their human owners in an airplane. Airlines may have different rules, but are required by law to accept service dogs only. So, before you fly with your service animal or emotional support animal, check with your airline. Civelli: Let’s talk about ESA letters. They can be written by any licensed mental health professional, such as a therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist, which should state that pet therapy is an important part of your treatment plan. To get an ESA letter, you must consult professionals who are authorized to prescribe emotional support animal letters in your area. Here is a list of people who can prescribe an ESA Letter:A Primary Care PhysicianA Licensed TherapistAny Licensed Mental Health ProfessionalA Licensed General PhysicianArreaza: Elements that should be included on an ESA Letter: It must clearly state the patient suffers from a mental illness that can be managed by an emotional support animal. It should be on proper letterheadCivelli: And it should contain the following elements:Licensed person’s name and signatureLicense number, date of the license, and state where it’s issuedDate of issuanceState Patient’s name and date of birthPet details-optionalAlthough not required, it’s recommended to keep the letter updated each year. Arreaza: Let’s say you decide to take your service dog to a museum. What questions can employees ask you to determine if your dog is a service animal?Civelli: In situations where it is not obvious that the dog is a service animal, staff may ask only two specific questions: (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform? Staff are not allowed to request any documentation for the dog, require that the dog demonstrate its task, or inquire about the nature of the person's disability.Arreaza: Do service animals have to wear a vest or patch or special harness identifying them as service animals?Civelli: No. The ADA does not require service animals to wear a vest, ID tag, or specific harness.Arreaza: Anxiety is a very prevalent condition, especially during these times of pandemic. If someone has a dog who calms when having an anxiety attack, does this qualify it as a service animal?Civelli: It depends. The ADA makes a distinction between psychiatric service animals and emotional support animals. If the dog has been trained to sense that an anxiety attack is about to happen and take a specific action to help avoid the attack or lessen its impact, that would qualify as a service animal. However, if the dog's mere presence provides comfort, that would not be considered a service animal under the ADA.Arreaza: A sample letter is provided in our website and also as a dot phrase in Epic. Just type .RIOBRAVOESA and a letter will pop up for your patient.Page Break Sample Template for Emotional Support Animal Letter Date: 2/21/20ESA Breed: Dog, Golden RetrieverESA Name: Max To Whom It May Concern: Maria Gonzalez is currently a patient receiving care at our facility. This person meets the criteria of mental or emotional disability as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental Disorders 5 (DSM 5), the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), the Fair Housing Act, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (section 504), as well as the Air Carrier Access Act (49 U.S.C. 41705 and 14 C.F.R. 382). This individual has certain limitations associated to social interactions and coping with stressful situations. To enable his/her ability to live independently and alleviate these difficulties, Maria Gonzalez has an emotional support animal (ESA). The ESA is necessary to mitigate symptoms experienced. We are happy to inform that we have a winner! Her name is Lubna Nasr. We chose her answer because it’s the most accurate and concise of all the answers. Question: What is the first treatment approach for type 2 diabetes mellitus? For example, for a patient who had polydipsia, polyuria for a few weeks, and at your office had a random BG of 210. Ok, let’s call our winner. Answer: The first treatment approach for this patient includes diabetes education, intensive lifestyle modification and Hemoglobin A1c measurement. Diabetes education: Participation in a comprehensive diabetes self-management education program to learn more about the disease, glucose monitoring, management and complications. Intensive lifestyle modification (nutrition, physical activity and weight reduction): Nutrition should be based on foods who are low in carbs, include proteins and good fats. Physical activity: focusing on aerobic exercise (150 minutes weekly or more, at least 3days/week, AND resistance training with free weights or weight machines (2–3 sessions/week). Hemoglobin A1c measurement: To determine if the patient needs to start treatment with metformin and/or other medications for diabetes, including insulin, if indicated. ____________________________For your Sanity: 40by Steven SaitoThis is our 40th episode, so we have some jokes related to being 40 years old. 40 is the perfect age for people. And you don’t refuse it._____________________________Now we conclude our episode number 40 “Emotional Support Animals”. Dr. Civelli explained that Emotional Support Animals are companions to provide comfort to patients, but they do not have a particular skill and do not need training. We congratulate Lubna for her concise answer about diabetes management. Music: Majestic Nature by Craig Stuart Garfinkle Artwork by Steve English The script: Episode 14 – Interlude - Origins of Darkness Before the madness and pain, a beautiful country house stood in the idyllic countryside of the North York Moors. There lived in that house a very fortunate family. Although, some would say that the blessing and good fortune were not of their own making. Instead, the blessing had found them and made its home there. Why it should do this, I can't say for sure, but I suspect this happened because they neither sought after nor longed for it. Instead, they concentrated on loving each other and caring for those around them, being thankful for all they had. So, beauty and bounty followed wherever they went, and everything they put their hands to succeeded and prospered, which led to more thankfulness and joy. And so, it seemed that from each generation, this fortune flowed to the next, as sons and daughter grew up learning to love and care, with gratitude for the blessings they received. They lived in peace, drinking in the beauty all around and happily sharing their good fortune generously with others. Around the country house, small villages grew for workers who tended the estate. Their housing was modest but comfortable, and a step beyond what they could find elsewhere, for the Briggswaths were good people who looked after and valued their workers. Beyond the villages, the Briggswaths built a large hall, which they used as a meeting place and church. Generations of Briggswaths and villagers were married there, worshipped and gave thanks for all they'd received. The land of the Briggswath estate was incredibly productive. Orchards were plentiful and loaded down with fruit; animals grazed and multiplied; woodlands were well-managed for healthy supplies of timber; crops grew both in the fields and the many gardens and allotments of the villagers. This part of Yorkshire really did seem to be ‘God's own county'! The lord and lady of the house at this time had four children, three girls and a much younger boy. All of them were exceptionally good looking, and before the boy was very old, his three sisters married and moved away, leaving him as the last child in the rambling country house. His name was Lealholm Warn Briggswath. Page Break However, Leal, as he was known, was not like the rest of his family. Right from the start, he was spoilt, indulged and never disciplined for behaviour his sisters would never have got away with! So, Leal learnt how to manipulate his parents to get whatever he wanted. He perfected tantrums and grumpiness; he became a master at lying – no matter what it cost other people – as long as it got him what he wanted. To your face, he was about as charming and lovely as you could imagine, until that is, he had what he wanted or decided you were no longer of use to him. Then, you were at his mercy. This was especially true for his parents as they grew older and frailer – suspiciously frail for their age. It was during this time that the Briggswaths stopped meeting at the hall for church on a Sunday. Leal always felt very uncomfortable by what was said in that place. And so, when ill health prevented his parents from going, Leal did nothing to help them, preferring to stay away and make excuses. Whereas his parents had loved the villagers, Leal despised them, wanting nothing to do with them - except get their labour as cheaply as possible. Then the time came, as was the way of things at that point in history, when Leal was expected to marry. And, while his parents seemed to be increasingly blind to his outrageous and selfish behaviour, the rest of the community was not. No family for many miles around would risk their daughter marrying someone like Leal. So, his parents looked further afield for a bride – but none could be found. If a young lady visited as a possible match, Leal... Support this podcast
I’m joined on today’s episode of Franchise Secrets by my good friend Kevin Wilson. As someone who originally started in private equity, moved into franchising and now runs Buzz Franchise Brands, Kevin brings a unique perspective with different insights from most of our guests. What I find really sets him apart is his ability to understand both the franchisee and the franchisor, as well as the best approach to creating a high functioning business with the intent to build equity. Today we cover a wide range of topics from planning an exit strategy, to making decisions for the long term, to one important trait that most successful people have in common, and so much more. I love Kevin’s take on how to start the franchisor-franchisee relationship off on the right foot as well as what you can expect a potential investor to be looking for when you ultimately plan to sell a franchise business. This episode is perfect for anyone just starting out in franchising that wants to learn how to plan for the long term, or people with a few franchises under their belts but looking to level up their game and eventually plan a graceful exit. Tune in for an hour’s worth of gems from Kevin! Time Stamps 5:27-10:26 - Not paying for marketing and other common mistakes young franchisees make 12:43-16:03 - Leading and caring for your franchisees 16:25-21:11 - How to vet a potential franchisor 21:11-26:16 - Laying the foundations for a good franchisor-franchisee relationship 31:08-35:56 - Positioning your business to be valuable to an investor 41:17-53:57 - Kevin’s brands and the lessons he’s learned along the way Page Break The Foundations of a Good Working Relationship 90% of the battle in having a good relationship is starting off on the right foot. If you begin your relationship with honesty and reasonable expectations, the path forward will be that much more smooth. Everyone is going to have hiccups along the way, but that is part of the journey. Before you invest your money in a business you should always feel confident that your business partner is going to be right there in the trenches with you, picking you up when you falter. A good franchisor should be honest with you about the fact that it won’t always be smooth sailing. Address this before hand and make sure you know what will happen when someone does make a mistake, whether it’s you or them, and how those mistakes will be rectified. Make sure they know that you are there for the long haul, ready to roll with the punches, and make sure that you feel confident they will be there for you. If you establish this precedent early on, your working relationship will begin with a respect that is easier to maintain. Planning Your Exit Almost every franchisor and franchisee that I know ultimately plans to exit their business. But not all of them really understand what they need to do in order to build a business that is not only well run, but also attractive to investors. What would you be looking for if you were buying into a business? You would probably want to see that the business was running well but that there was also significant room to grow. Not many people want a stagnant business plan, and you want to make sure you’re putting yourself in a position for your business to be as attractive as possible. Have you planned out a timeline for when you want to exit your business? Do you have good relationships with your franchisees? (the ones who potential investors will definitely be speaking with!) Have you built a strategy that can continue to grow well into the future? These are all questions you need to keep in mind right from the beginning, all the way until you actually make a sale. The Doom Loop vs The Success Loop There’s a reason that most businesses fail in the first 5 years. Actually there are many reasons. One of the common mistakes that young business owners make is not understanding the need to constantly market. They think that once they’ve built it, the customers will come, especially in a brick and mortar store, but that is simply not the case. Franchisees who fall into this mindset often cut marketing costs at the first sign of any type of slowdown in their business. When the revenue starts to drop they begin looking for places to save money, but this is a grave mistake that can curse your business. When they stop investing in marketing, the business drops off even faster, giving them less and less revenue and ultimately trapping them in a downward spiral. That’s why having a top notch franchisor is so important. Not only can they help you avoid pitfalls like this, they can actually provide capital when times get tough, avoiding the doom loop altogether and replacing it with a success loop! In this inaugural episode of the Attorney Marketing Profits Podcast, our host Richard Martindale shares his story, which includes 23 years as an attorney and 10 years as a marketing professional, and how his journey fed his desire to help other attorneys and law firms with their marketing. Richard first dreamed of being an attorney when he was in junior high school, and he got started on his journey by enrolling in college after high school. However, losing his father when Richard was 20-years-old nearly derailed this dream. Richard powered through this early tragedy and graduated law school several years later. He then achieved his dream by landing a job as prosecutor with the Harris County District Attorney’s office in Houston, Texas. Richard eventually transitioned into private practice, but it wasn’t all he dreamed it would be. Richard decided to start his own law firm in 2008, but he quickly realized he would need to improve his firm’s marketing to achieve more success. Richard began researching marketing and completely fell in love with it. This led him to create his own marketing firm, Clockwork Digital Marketing. Richard gives complete detail of how he achieved what he has, including the lessons he learned in Clockwork’s early days and how those lessons led to proven legal marketing strategies. Richard shares what he has found to be the best legal marketing plan along with a story that proves just how successful it can be. More at: http://preliminaryhealthcare.blogspot.com/2014/12/how-often-should-you-eat-part-5.html Because of the complex nature of this topic, I’ve broken it down into 5 parts, this being the final: the first installment was meant to raise your suspicions about traditional advice, after which were posts addressing the effects of eating frequency on fat loss, muscle mass, and aging & longevity. Here we’ll discuss how to create a metabolism capable of “Infrequent Eating.” If you’re reading this post, I’ll assume you’ve read at least one of the previous posts on eating frequency (and its effects on fat loss, muscle mass, and/or aging & longevity), and are now curious as to how you can implement “infrequent eating” (IE) into your own life. There are several possible variations of IE, but I advocate eating a single meal at the end of each day because doing so can synchronizes your circadian rhythm to allow for more productive days and restful nights (read post 1 if you need some explanation here). However, regardless of how you might decide to implement IE, it would likely be a mistake to jump headlong into this style of eating. Instead, there’s some preparation you likely need to take. Page Break If you’re like many people, you eat several times each day, often foods containing quite a bit of carbohydrate (fruits, starches, sweets, etc.); in doing so, you’re body has adapted itself to burning that carbohydrate as fuel. The problem you face, then, is that eating carbohydrate prevents you from burning fat—so as your body has engineered itself to burn carbohydrate, it has neglected the molecular machines necessary for burning fat. And there’s the problem. When you don’t eat, or don’t eat carbohydrate, your fat cells release fat to be used as fuel. But if you don’t have the ability to burn that fat very effectively, you can become tired and lethargic. Furthermore, carbohydrate tends to increase your blood pressure—refraining from carbohydrate, then, reduces blood pressure; low blood pressure can cause similar feelings of fatigue and dizziness. But do not fret! These effects are only temporary—think of them as a “transition phase.” Within 1-4 weeks, your ability to use (body) fat improves and blood pressure normalizes to leave you feeling just fine. In theory, you could just begin IE…but it might not be very easy and lead to quitting. Instead, I’ll lay out a step-by-step plan to get you on your way. Know that this plan may not completely alleviate discomfort, but will ease your transition. Easing the Transition Metabolically speaking, not eating (IE) and not eating carbohydrate are very similar—both causing your fat cells to release fat to be used as fuel. As stated above, though, you may not be able to use that fat right away. IE, then, requires you to develop a metabolism capable of adequately burning fat. In one sense, this is incredibly simple—just refrain from eating carbohydrate. But for the reasons mentioned above, doing so can be accompanied by short-term dizziness, fatigue, and lethargy. Easing the transition, then, means developing a fat-burning metabolism while minimizing the temporary discomfort. NOTE: The following steps are only temporary (1-4 weeks), as long as your transition into a fat-burning metabolism. NOTE: Especially if you are diabetic, or on medications for blood sugar, see your doctor before attempting IE so they may advise you on medication implications. Step 1: Reduce Other Demands in Your Life This seems almost like a no-brainer, but it’s so easy to overlook. During your transition, it’s a good idea either lay off of some of the other demands in your work/family/social life, or find a time when these demands are lessened. Otherwise, your performance in these areas will suffer and you’re less likely to get through the transition phase. Scale Back on the Exercise Similar to the point above, DON’T start any new exercise program during this 1-4 weeks. In fact, if you’re already exercising, go a little easier. If you’re completely sedentary, though, getting some light activity (like walking) is probably okay. Step 2: Decide on an Appropriate Carbohydrate Level Remember that carbohydrate prevents your body from burning fat…which thus prevents you from incorporating IE. To find an appropriately low level, there are 2 strategies: • Start high and work down • Start low By starting high and working down, you can simply figure how many grams of carbohydrate you’re currently eating and subtract 25-50 grams every 3-5 days until you get below this threshold. How do you know when you’re below this threshold? The most precise way is to buy some ketone urine test strips; ketones are produced when your body is burning a large amount of fat—when the test strip says that ketones are present in you urine, you’ve likely reached an acceptably low level. By “low,” you should aim for 0-60 grams of carbohydrate. This strategy will be the surest and quickest way of finding an appropriate level. After a week or so, you can choose to eat some more carbohydrate and use the ketone strips to assure you’re still below the necessary threshold. However, don’t assume that more carbohydrate is easier—you’ll likely find that eating more makes things harder. Eat More Fat So if you’re going to be eating less carbohydrate, you’ll need to increase your consumption of fat. If you’ve read other articles on this site, you’ll know not to worry about getting fatter or developing/exacerbating cardiovascular disease as a result. However, avoid the fats found in vegetable oils and processed foods. Keep Eating Frequently During your transition, frequent eating (as long as it’s not high in carbohydrate) can help ease discomfort. We’ll talk about moving towards IE in Step 4, after your fat-burning transition is complete. Step 3: Some Helpful Supplements Coconut Oil Coconut oil contains a special type of fat called “Medium Chain Triglyceride” (MCT). These are special because, even without a fully-formed fat-burning metabolism, they can be readily used to provide energy. Use it to cook with and consume it as part of your meals, but do NOT eat it without other food unless you want an immediate case of diarrhea! Bouillon Cubes One reason carbohydrate increases blood pressure is because it causes sodium retention…which increases blood volume (how much blood you have)—more blood volume tends to increase blood pressure. In time, your body will adjust—but you can remedy this problem in the meantime by increasing your consumption of sodium. You could salt your food heavily, but to get enough sodium this way would make most of your food pretty unpalatable. Instead, drink a broth made with a bouillon cube 2-3 times each day. B-Complex The B-vitamins are important in burning fat. During the transition, taking a B-complex may increase your body’s ability to burn fat. Carnitine Similarly, a nutrient called “carnitine” (found in meats and also in supplement form) helps your cells use fat. Supplementing with 1-2 grams each day may help ease your transition. Step 4: Push Back Your First Meal After you start feeling normal, consider your transition to a fat-burning metabolism complete. Now it’s time to work on IE. The most natural step is to simply postpone your first meal until later in the day. Some may be able to postpone this all the way until night, but not everybody. Push it Back Further With a focus on postponing your first meal, you’ll eventually find yourself quite content not eating until very late in the day, near bed time. Step 5: Get In Touch Finally, this isn’t an exact science. I’ve laid out a basic primer for completing this conversion, but you may have questions, comments, and/or concerns that I haven’t addressed. If so, please don’t be afraid to contact me. Posting to my Facebook page is a great way to let everybody else benefit from your interaction, but you can also email me at preliminaryhealthcare@gmail.com Thank you so much for reading. I really hope this series of articles is well received because IE can unlock a longer and healthier life for many of us. Be well, Nicklaus Millican
